The Season of Pentecost September 21, 2014
The season of Pentecost is celebrating from Sunday to Sunday the life-giving words and works of Christ.
Today the color on the altar and on the banners is green. Green is the color of abiding life, nourishment, and rest.
About the Service
The Cross: These crosses have been used since the 4th
century. They signal the focus of our worship and the presence of
Christ as we gather and depart.
Opening Prayer: Like the invocation, we invite God to be with us and begin
by focusing our hearts and minds
on worship.
Readings: Each worship service is
grounded in scripture. Readings
are appointed to be read each week.
The collection of readings is known
as the “lectionary.”
2
Offering: Throughout scripture the people
of God gave their first fruits or the best of the harvest to the
Lord. Your offerings ensure the mission and ministry of the
Lord continues in this place. Thank you!
Table Talk:
A time when the whole family is
“spoken” to and has time to discuss the
point of the day.
The Doxology Medieval Latin doxologia Greek, equiva
lent to doxo- (combining form of dóxa honor, glory
) +-logia -logy
Creeds: There are 3 ecumenical
statements of faith. They date from the
4th century. Christian:the ancient
textreads “catholic,”meaning

Christiandoctrine.
Prayers: The prayers are
intercessions offered to God on behalf of the
Church, the world, and of all people.
The Words of our
Lord or the Words of Institution are a
harmony of the 4 New Testament accounts of
the Lord’s Supper.
GATHERING OF THE OFFERINGS
Please place your offering in the bowl on your table. One person can bring up the offering and hand it to the usher. At this time, please pass the blue books back and forth, making
sure that everyone in attendance has had a chance to sign in. We also have a guest register in the Narthex at the Welcome Center. We rejoice in having you with us!

TABLE TALK
CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS
We come to God to confess our sins now. These are the things we have done wrong during the week, and even today. To confess means to say what we have done wrong to God and to other people. To repent means to turn away from those sins. Let’s look at the cross. When we are walking with Jesus, we are moving towards the cross. When we sin, we turn away from the cross and walk away. Let’s confess our sins together.
Leader: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. People: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Leader: Let us take some time and silently confess our sins to God. People: Holy and gracious God, I confess that I have sinned against You. Some of my sins I know - the thoughts and words and deeds of which I am ashamed - but some are known only to You. In the name of Jesus Christ, I ask forgiveness. Help me to leave my trash—my sins—with you and to walk away free from guilt and sin so that I can live a life of worship to You. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH Please see Prayer Ministry Page
After each petition, the leader will say: “Lord, in Your mercy,” and the
congregation responds: “Hear our prayer.”
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the
kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen!
THE WORDS OF OUR LORD Matthew 26:26-29, Mark 14:22-25, Luke 22:14-20, 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
THE GREETING OF PEACE
Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

PRAYER OF THANKS
Pastor: We praise You, Lord Jesus, for all of Your gifts to us,
especially for the gifts we receive at this table through
Your Word and promises!
People: Strengthen us as Your people, connected to You by
Your Spirit, that we may grow in faith and love to
share the Good News of Jesus as we live in Him!
Amen!
The Water Blessing:
Those that do not receive communion are encouraged to come forward for a water blessing, to remind them of
their baptism in the Lord.
How to Commune:
After the communion assistants have communed, feel free to come up as you
are ready and able to. No one will “cue” you to come up. As the line moves forward, come and receive the Host and then either the individual cup from
the first assistant or the common cup from the second assistant. The white individual cups are grape juice. Individual
cups are then placed in the basket near the communion
assistant as you return to your seat.
A Prayer for after you commune: After you
commune you are invited to join in the singing of the
songs. You may also wish to take this time to pray.
Lord God, I give thanks for the Body and Blood of Your Son,
the pledge of my salvation; for the Word by which you give
me forgiveness; for your promises by which you give
me life. May the gifts of Your heavenly banquet fortify me against the evil one, strengthen me in the face of the world, overcome
my selfishness and pride. Help me live as one who
hungers for Your grace, who thirsts after righteousness, who longs to taste of Your goodness. In the name of
Jesus. Amen

Benediction: What does it
mean to “be a blessing”?
Let’s take a look at the very last
part of our worship service –
what we call the benediction. This is another word from the
Latin language – benedictus (Beh-neh-DIK-tuss) –
and it means exactly what it
is, “blessed be”. The benediction
is the blessing spoken over
one another by friends and
family at the close of the
service.

Sunday Morning Adult Education Come and join us this Sunday, as we start our
study of The Story by looking at Chapter 1. This week we will spend time looking at the Story of Noah and how the Gospel is being shown from the very beginning of the Bible. We will have two classes: one at 8:30 for those who worship at 9:30, and the same class again at 9:30 for those who worship at 8 or 11. We would love for you to join us for one of the two classes! These will be the only Adult Education classes that take place during Sunday Morning. Both will meet in the Fellowship Hall.
Next Week: Pastor Hengst will lead us in a study of Chapter 2 of The Story. This week we will be focusing on the story of Abraham being called to by God to sacrifice his son Isaac, and will see how God is showing grace and mercy already, early on in the story.
Wednesday Adult Education We are studying The Story on Wednesdays
with Pastor Harmon. There will be a class at 9:30 AM and the same class will be held at 6:30 PM. Both classes will be held in the Fel-lowship Hall and will be identical. In September there will not be a meal served in the evening, but beginning on October 1st, we will have dinner served prior to Bible Study.
Small Groups Beginning on October 12th of this year, King of
Glory will be starting a congregational Small Group study of The Story. We invite you all to join in a Small Group beginning on that date. Small Groups are 8-12 people who meet twice a month to come together in fellowship, study and prayer. The goal of Small Groups is for people to grow in their faith and to connect to their brothers and sisters in Christ. Please prayerfully consider joining a Small Group in October and keep your eyes open for more information. If you have any questions please contact Pastor Hengst at [email protected] or at 757-258-9701.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Connect to God and His people; Live through Service and Sharing.
The Board of Elders met this week to pray for
the congregation. We are happy to share that each Elder prays for up to 42 families in the church as well as the staff. May the Lord bless them as they serve and pray.
Making More Room: We thank you for your
commitment to the Making More Room campaign. Please continue to send in your pledges and gifts during this important phase of building. May the Lord be praised as we Make More Room!
Congratulations Tara Wolf! Tara was recently
appointed by the Board of Directors of the Southeastern District to serve as a District reconciler. May the Lord bless her as she serves the larger church in this important post.
Faith Sharing Moments: How many times have
you taken the opportunity to share your faith? With a friend, co-worker, neighbor, even a stranger? The Southeastern District, as part of It's Ablaze for God's mission, is counting the number of faith-sharing moments taking place in the District. The numbers are meant to be encouraging to others and a celebration of faith in action. Send Pastor Harmon an e-mail and simply share the "number" with him. He will then pass it on. Thanks!
Pastoral Care Fund: We are blessed to help
many people through your gifts to the Pastoral Care Fund. Funds are currently low. If you would like to give toward this fund, please place your gift in the offering or mail it to KOG and on the memo write: pastoral care. Thank you.
A chance to visit Jesus: Jesus said, "I was in prison and you visited me" and that's exactly what the Storybook Connection ministry does every week! We take books for the inmates to read to their children on tape and then send the book and the tape to their child. It's a very worthwhile and rewarding experience, and we need some new volunteers (especially women) to go once a month or so. You can go with an experienced volunteer until you're comfortable going on your own. For more information or to volunteer, contact Dale Walter, 229-2026.
The Senior Ministry Focus Group will have its
next meeting on Tuesday, September 23 from 10 AM to 11:30 to build on the ideas that were put forward at our first meeting. We invite all who are interested in moving this ministry forward to join us. If you have any questions you can contact Pastor Froehlich by phone at 220-6783 or by email at [email protected].
Women’s Weight Management Group. The
group, under the auspices of the Parish Nurse, has been meeting twice per month since February. This is a unique approach to weight management that is not a diet, but a process to create an understanding of how to develop techniques for managing one’s weight. The group recently completed an exploration of The End of Overeating by David Kessler. Members have shared experiences, recipes, food samples and helpful publications. There are no public weigh-ins. Currently there are several openings for new members. A detailed description of the activity is available in the Welcome Center with a signup sheet. The next orientation meeting is September 26, at 9:30 AM, in Life Enrichment Room 4.

FEAST DAY September 21st
ST. MATTHEW, APOSTLE, AND EVANGELIST
St. Matthew, the author of the Gospel according to Matthew, has also been identified with the apostle Matthew. This identification has been the constant tradition of the Church. The Gospel gives “Matthew” to the name of the tax collector in Matthew 9:13, whereas he is called Levi in Mark 2:13-14. In this way it has been concluded that Matthew the apostle and Matthew the evangelist are the same person. His apostolic activity was at first restricted to the communities of Palestine. Nothing definite is known about his later life. There is a tradition that points to Ethiopia as his field of labor; other traditions mention Parthia and Persia. It is uncertain whether he died a natural death or received the crown of martyrdom. His Gospel was written to convince those among his own people who had not accepted Jesus as the promised redemption of Israel, so he is careful to show how Jesus fulfilled “all the law and the prophets.” The lections appointed for Morning and Evening Prayer on his day are Job 28:12-28, Romans 10:1-15, and Matthew 13:44-52.
