THE SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT: MARCH 17, 2019
The Clergy’s
Corner
This passage found in Luke 13:31-35, begins with a warning from the Pharisees about Herod’s plan to kill Jesus. The Pharisees are usually very argumenta-tive and hostile to Jesus. It leads us to question the honesty and sincerity of their warning. Some people believe that the Pharisees were just trying to scare Jesus so that he would run away and stop doing his
work.
At the same time, we cannot ignore the threat of Herod wanting to kill Jesus. Looking at the past, The Herod family had a very disgraceful record of persecution and murder against the people of God. Herod the great tried to kill Jesus when he was born. Herod Antipas also known as Herod the Tetrarch is the son of Herod the Great. Antipas succeeded his father and has beheaded John the Baptist. The Pharisees’ warning, sounds like a credible threat to me. If you remember the post 9/11 era of President Georges Bush, that threat would require a high level alert of “Code Red”.
However, Jesus didn’t seem to be too concerned about the threat. In-stead he was given his plan of work for days ahead. He told the Phari-sees to go “Tell that fox, behold I cast out demons, and I do healings today and tomorrow and the third day I shall be perfected” (Luke 31: 32). Jesus was not scared or intimidated by the warning of the Phari-sees. He had a job to do and he will do it no matter what. He was well aware of what lay ahead. However, he knew that his life was not de-pendent of what people wanted him to do rather what God wanted him to do. Jesus said in Matthew 10:28 “Do not be afraid of those who can kill the body but cannot kill the soul, the only one you should fear is the one who can destroy the soul”.
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my
redeemer. Psalm 19:14. “So do not fear for I am with you….” Isaiah 41:10

THE SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT: MARCH 17, 2019
The Pharisees wanted to inject fear in Jesus. May be they believed that he would run away and disappear. Many times that’s what happened to us. When we are full of fear and anxiety we tend to abandon the task at hand and run away or hide. Fear is an old tactic using by the devil to deter us from doing God’s work. When Adam and Eve sinned, God came looking for them. Adam said I was afraid and hid. People have been do-ing that since then. We afraid so we hide.
Jesus was not hiding. He continued his work of healing according to his schedule. In charge of his own destiny, he is heading to Jerusalem a city with a terrible and murderous record against the prophets sent by God. And Jesus was no exception. He must go there and be subjected to the same maltreatment and death.
Another important thing in the reading is that, I think Jesus wants us to set goals. We know how important it is to set goals in our lives. It is our spiritual responsibility to set our ministry goals, as long as we put our trust in God and leave room for him to modify them or simply lead us into the unknown.
Our ministry can be very dangerous at time, especially for those who preach the truth about the kingdom of God or who are involved in mis-sion in a foreign land. However, we can rest assured that God will guide us all the way. We don’t have to be scared or overly concerned about the work that we have to do because it is not our work but God’s work. In psalm 16:1 we read: “Protect me God, because I trust in you”.
Jesus also give us the example that we have to try to gather even those who wish us harm and show them the way of peace and love. Je-rusalem, Jerusalem He said “You who kill the prophets and stone those who sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children to-gether, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing”. Brothers and sisters, despite of the unwillingness of some to cooperate and the evil desire of others to perpetrate hatred. We must

“love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us”.
In addition, this passage reminded us that working on God’s vineyard is not easy. Many Christians have been threatened, harassed, beaten and even kills for standing for the truth. There is always somebody who is going to be unhappy about what we are doing. Like Jesus our focus should be to do the will of God.
In this season of lent, as we are faithfully embarked in the road of gali-lee with Jesus pursuing a call for healing, casting out demons and spreading the good news, following him crossing into Jerusalem to his imminent death, let us remember that our lives are in God’s hand. God will assure our security, the security of our family and nothing, abso-lutely nothing about us, will ever escape his knowledge, his care, his power and his everlasting love.
In the name of the Father, the son and the Holy Spirit.

THE FIRST READING
Genesis 15:1-12,17-18
God makes a covenant with Abram and takes on himself all the consequences for the covenant’s failure. In choosing a man who has been infertile to be the father of his people, God has made a bold and seemingly unwise choice. A reading (lesson) from the Book of Genesis:
The word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, “Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” But Abram said, “O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “You have given me no offspring, and so a slave born in my house is to be my heir.” But the word of the LORD came to him, “This man shall not be your heir; no one but your very own issue shall be your heir.” He brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your descendants be.” And he believed the LORD; and the LORD reckoned it to him as righteousness.
Then he said to him, “I am the LORD who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess.” But he said, “O Lord GOD, how am I to know that I shall possess it?” He said to him, “Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” He brought him all these and cut them in two, laying each half over against the other; but he did not cut the birds in two. And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.
As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a deep and terrifying darkness descended upon him.
When the sun had gone down and it was dark, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates.”

Psalm 27 Dominus illuminatio BCP pg. 617
1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom then shall I fear? * the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom then shall I be afraid?
2 When evildoers came upon me to eat up my flesh, * it was they, my foes and my adversaries, who stumbled and fell.
3 Though an army should encamp against me, *
yet my heart shall not be afraid; 4 And though war should rise up against me, *
yet will I put my trust in him. 5 One thing have I asked of the LORD;
one thing I seek; * that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life;
6 To behold the fair beauty of the LORD *
and to seek him in his temple. 7 For in the day of trouble he shall keep me safe
in his shelter; * he shall hide me in the secrecy of his dwelling and set me high upon a rock.
8 Even now he lifts up my head *
above my enemies round about me. 9 Therefore I will offer in his dwelling an oblation
with sounds of great gladness; * I will sing and make music to the LORD.
10 Hearken to my voice, O LORD, when I call; *
have mercy on me and answer me.

THE EPISTLE
Philippians 3:17-4:1
The apostle Paul urges the Christians in Philippi to remember their identity as children of God and to behave as such. They should deny themselves the constantly changing desires of the world and its emotions, and, instead, focus on the truth which God has placed in their hearts. A reading (lesson) from the Letter of Paul to the Philippians:
Brothers and sisters, join in imitating me, and observe those who live according to the example you have in us. For many live as enemies of the cross of Christ; I have often told you of them, and now I tell you even with tears. Their end is destruction; their god is the belly; and their glory is in their shame; their minds are set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. He will transform the body of our humiliation that it may be conformed to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to make all things subject to himself. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved.

Luke 13:31-35

All Glory to you, Lord Christ
Some Pharisees came and said to Jesus, "Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you." He said to them, "Go and tell that fox for me, 'Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my work. Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of Jerusalem.' Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! See, your house is left to you. THE NICENE CREED BCP p. 358
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became truly human.
For our sake, he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day, he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. who with the Father and the Son
is worshiped and glorified. who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
J We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Celebrant and People together, all kneeling
Most holy and merciful Father: We confess to you and to one another, and to the whole communion of saints in heaven and on earth, that we have sinned by our own fault in thought, word, and deed; by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.
The Celebrant continues
We have not loved you with our whole heart, and mind, and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We have not forgiven others, as we have been forgiven. Have mercy on us, Lord.
We have been deaf to your call to serve, as Christ served us. We have not been true to the mind of Christ. We have grieved your Holy Spirit. Have mercy on us, Lord.
We confess to you, Lord, all our past unfaithfulness: the pride, hypocrisy, and impatience of our lives, We confess to you, Lord.
Our self-indulgent appetites and ways, and our exploitation of other people, We confess to you, Lord.
Our anger at our own frustration, and our envy of those more fortunate than ourselves, We confess to you, Lord.
Our intemperate love of worldly goods and comforts, and our dishonesty in daily life and work, We confess to you, Lord.

Our negligence in prayer and worship, and our failure to commend the faith that is in us, We confess to you, Lord.
Accept our repentance, Lord, for the wrongs we have done: for our blindness to human need and suffering, and our indifference to injustice and cruelty, Accept our repentance, Lord.
For all false judgments, for uncharitable thoughts toward our neighbors, and for our prejudice and contempt toward those who differ from us, Accept our repentance, Lord.
For our waste and pollution of your creation, and our lack of concern for those who come after us, Accept our repentance, Lord.
Restore us, good Lord, and let your anger depart from us; Favorably hear us, for your mercy is great.
Accomplish in us the work of your salvation, That we may show forth your glory in the world.
By the cross and passion of your Son our Lord, Bring us with all your saints to the joy of his resurrection.
The Bishop, if present, or the Priest, stands and, facing the people, says
Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who desires not the death of sinners, but rather that they may turn from their wickedness and live, has given power and commandment to his ministers to declare and pronounce to his people, being penitent, the absolution and remission of their sins. He pardons and absolves all those who truly repent, and with sincere hearts believe his holy Gospel.
Therefore we beseech him to grant us true repentance and his Holy Spirit, that those things may please him which we do on this day, and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure and holy, so that at the last we may come to his eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PROPER PREFACE
Through Jesus Christ our Lord; who was tempted in every way as we are, yet did not sin. By his grace we are able to triumph over every evil, and to live no longer four ourselves alone but for him who died for us and rose again.
Then the Celebrant continues
Therefore, we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:
Sanctus et Benedictus #S125 (1982 HYMNAL)
Celebrant and People
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of mercy and grace, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
The people stand or kneel.
Then the Celebrant continues
Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.
He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.
At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for ALL. Do this for the remembrance of me."

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for ALL for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."
Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Celebrant and People
Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
The Celebrant continues
We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.
Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.
All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to sing,
THE LORD’S PRAYER
People and Celebrant
Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: Have mercy on us Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: Have mercy on us Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: Grant us Peace

The Gifts of God for the People of God; Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. The ministers receive the Sacrament in both kinds, and then immediately deliver it to the people. The Bread and the Cup are given to the communicants with these words:
The Body of Christ, the bread of heaven. [Amen.] The Blood of Christ, the cup of salvation. [Amen.]
When necessary, the Celebrant consecrates additional bread and wine, using the form on page 408. During the ministration of Communion, hymns, psalms, or anthems may be sung.

God of abundance, you have fed us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation. You have united us with Christ and one another, and you have made us one with all your people in heaven and on earth.
Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit; that we may proclaim your redeeming love to the world and continue forever in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen.

THE SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT: MARCH 17, 2019
Dear Parishioners,
When the house of God can reflect God’s glory, what a great blessing for those who worship
him!
Beloveds, it is an expression of our gratitude to
offer flowers for the altar every Sunday.
1
As we are coming together and can feel God’s blessings among us, we
should think of beautifying our worship space.
Donations of flowers are welcomed. Envelopes are available on the back for financial donations if you want to contribute. If you care to
bring flowers you pick yourself, that’s even better!
Let us make this space sacred and beautiful!
Dear Friends;
This spring we are looking to beautify our garden space with low maintenance
yet beautiful and easy to care plants and
flowers. Gardens reflect peace and tranquility and place a reminder of the love of Jesus as people walk or drive by. We want our garden to become an enduring sign of the
church’s faith. If you would like to donate plants we are looking for annuals such as; hostas, azeleas, hydrangeas, morning glories, roses, ferns, rocky
mountains, etc..
For more information please contact the office.

Educatio for Ministry Every Christian receives the call to Christian
ministry at baptism. Education for Ministry
(EFM) provides the basics of a theological edu-
cation in order to develop knowledge and confi-
dence about the ministry we all share.
EFM is a program of the School of Theology of the University of
the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. Completion of the program
takes four years, during which participants study the Bible, church
history and 20th century theology. Participants commit one year
at a time to meet weekly in seminar groups led by a trained men-
tor. Participants can expect to do two to four hours of homework
per week outside of the seminar.

2018 Holy Land Trip Testimonials
~This was the trip of a lifetime for me. Thank you to my friend and St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church for allowing me the opportunity to fulfill my long-time dream. I always envisioned walking the via Dolorosa, fol-lowing in the footsteps of Jesus, and I am so proud I was able to accom-plish it. I am of the Methodist denomination, but it didn't matter. The lesson I learned from this pilgrimage is that regardless of race, skin col-or, religious beliefs and country of origin, we are all one people.
~This trip was a wonderful experience and a spiritual awakening. Shar-ing the same bus with other churches made us ONE family and more fun. This trip was very successful and I hope more people from St. Au-gustine’s will be able to make the trip next time. Thank you Fr. Nathan-ael and with God’s help for making this trip possible for me. I will never forget this experience in my life.
