—Fr. Ivan continued to rest up. I look forward to being the Pastor of St. Pat-

rick Church in Cedar Falls. The most important thing that

we can do as Christians is to pray each day. Keep me in

your prayers. I promise that I will keep you in my

prayers! If we are faithful to prayer, I’m sure that God

will allow us to accomplish something together that is

good, wonderful, and life-changing.

CONGRATULATIONS, KEN AND CAROL COX Ken and Carol Cox recently celebrated their 50th

wedding anniversary. Carol

grew up on a farm near

Dyersville. Ken also grew up

on a farm near Winterset.

They met at UNI and were

married in the Dyersville

Basilica on August 28, 1971.

They have three sons, Jim,

John, and Dave. Jim is

married to Lisa and they live

in Cedar Rapids. They have

two children, Kaci and Sam.

John is married to Angie and

they live in Cedar Falls. They have two children, Katie

and Caleb. Dave is married to Rebecca and they live in

North Liberty and have one son, Jake. And their oldest

grandchild, Kaci, is married to Gabe and is expecting

Ken and Carol’s first great grandchild in January!

Ken and Carol like to say to each other every day, “I love

you more today than yesterday. And I’ll love you more

tomorrow than today.” And it has kept them together for

50 years. Blessings to you, Ken and Carol!

From the Pastor MOST IMPORTANT THING WE CAN DO IS PRAY DAILY By Fr. Ivan Nienhaus

It has been eleven years since I have been asked to compose a

biography. Writing a biography almost

reminds me of those obituaries we

read in the local newspaper. Some

obituaries say too much. Other

obituaries say too little. I hope that

this biography lands somewhere in

the middle.

I was born in New Hampton, Iowa on

June 1, 1960 and raised in the small

town of Ft. Atkinson near Decorah.

My parents, Richard and Marilyn

Nienhaus still live in Fort

Atkinson. They are the proud parents of four children. I’m the oldest

child. My two brothers live in Colorado. My sister lives in New

Hampton. They are all married and are enjoying the addition of new

grandchildren in their families.

Upon graduating from Turkey Valley High School, I attended the

University of Iowa. I spent an additional year at Loras College in

Dubuque studying philosophy prior to attending St. Meinrad School of

Theology in St. Meinrad, Indiana.

I was ordained to the Priesthood at Nativity Parish in Dubuque on

June 24, 1989. My first assignment was at St. Patrick Church in

Cedar Rapids. My second assignment was at Sacred Heart Parish in

Waterloo along with teaching responsibilities at Columbus High. My

third assignment was my first Pastorate. I spent ten years serving

parishes in Winthrop, Masonville, and Monti. My fourth assignment

was a one-year stint at Immaculate Conception Church in Cedar

Rapids. My fifth assignment was at St. Cecilia Parish in Ames.

I have spent the last 11 years at St. Patrick Church in Cedar

Rapids. The last eleven years were spent rebuilding the parish that

was completely destroyed by the Flood of 2008. I also served as the

Catholic Priest Chaplain at St. Luke Hospital and Pastoral Coordinator

of LaSalle Catholic School (Grades K-8) on the west side of Cedar

Rapids.

I have enjoyed every assignment that I have been given as a

priest. Every parish is filled with faith-filled parishioners. I am

guessing that St. Patrick Parish here in Cedar Falls is no different. It

takes time to get to know the parishioners and the parishioners to get

to know you. Parishioners have a decided advantage over the

priest. There is one of me and hundreds of you. Do not be afraid to

tell me your name over and over again.

I was given a mini-sabbatical by the Archbishop upon leaving Cedar

Rapids that ran from July 13 through September 5. This

mini-sabbatical has served me well. I have been given sufficient time

CDA TO MEET AT GATEWAY PARK The next CDA meeting will be Monday,

September 13 at 5:30

PM. Save the date for this

safe, fun, and informative

evening outdoors as

summer comes to an

end. We will meet in the

small shelter at Gateway

Park in Cedar Falls.

At 5:30 PM, a rosary for recently deceased

members/family members will be recited. At

6:30 PM, the committee will serve a light meal

which includes local ice cream! Members are

encouraged to invite a guest to learn about

Catholic Daughters.

2021 FALL FESTIVAL-- SAVE THE DATE! We are pleased to share that the Fall Festival will be returning! Mark your

calendars for Sunday, October 3. We will begin at 10:30 AM and end at

2 PM.

Due to the current environment, the festival will look a little different this year.

Our venues will consist of a turkey dinner with all the trimmings including

homemade pie for dessert, a bake sale, pumpkin patch, kids' activities, and

an online silent auction. These areas will provide fun for the whole family,

while giving us the ability to make safety our top priority. We are currently

looking for volunteers to help us make the Fall Festival happen, so please

watch your email over the coming days or go to the church website for the link

to sign up for different areas online using Sign Up Genius. Committee

members will also be available after masses the weekend of September

11/12 to provide you with a sign up form and answer questions. Please take

note of these important items (more details to come!):

• Our meal will be available with both dine-in and takeout options. All

ticket sales will take place online!

• We will have a limited number of tickets for sale offline--the intent is for

these to be available for anyone without online access. If you are able to

order online, please do so. We are working through the details of these

offline sales, so please stay tuned!

• If you plan on dining in, you will be required to choose a time slot for

your reservation.

• All volunteers in the kitchen and dining areas will be required to wear a

mask. All other volunteers are strongly encouraged to do so.

• If you are donating baked goods, we will provide you with some safety

guidelines to ensure the safety for all. Please note that we will NOT be

collecting books and costumes this year.

Our goal is to make the Fall Festival a safe space for everyone to come and

enjoy this time of fellowship and community, and we are excited to bring back

the Fall Festival at a near-full capacity! If you have any questions, please feel

free to contact Lisa Strei at [email protected].

BUILDING OUR PLAYGROUND And we know that all things work together

for good to them that love God, to them who

are called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:28

Our school family is working hard to sell

Football Bash tickets and replace the older

part of our playground. We want to thank

everyone who purchased tickets after Mass

or at the Parish or School Office.

Still need tickets? You have just one more

week to buy a ticket in either office or after

Mass. Our sales will conclude on September

17. We have worked together as a parish

and school to help make a new playground

possible for students. With your generous

support and the love of God we will reach

this goal.

Blessings,

Lynette Hackett, Principal

In Our Parish and Beyond

Pray For All who are suffering from the powers of nature: That God will protect them from further harm, renew their energy, and speed the assistance that they need.

All who have suffered loss from acts of violence and for a world free from terror and war: That God will turn hearts from violence and revenge, protect the innocent from harm and bring forth a new season of justice and peace.

All teachers and catechists: That they may effectively lead those entrusted to them to a deeper knowledge and love of God.

Family and friends of Suzanne Merillat, David Fix, Betty Roberts, sister of Sue Doyle (Mike), and Alan Jorgensen, brother of Bette Aelmans and Phil Jorgensen (Lu). Suzanne, David, Betty, and Alan passed away recently. May God’s love and fond memories comfort you. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful receive the mercy of God.

Stewardship Reflection In the second reading today,

St. James has harsh words for

those who do not put their faith

into action. May we be such

good stewards of God’s gifts to

us that we can never be

accused of having “faith that

does nothing in practice.”

CHS EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL “The Holy Eucharist is the greatest of the sacraments, and

those who participate in it cannot help but be changed.”

(Jon Leonetti-Catholic author) Do we really want to change;

to be more of the person God calls us to be? If that answer

is yes, then begin visiting Jesus each week at the Perpetual

Adoration Chapel, located at Columbus HS. Specific needs

are Wednesdays at 3 am, Wednesdays at 2 am (once a

month), Thursdays at 11 pm & Saturdays at 7 pm. If inter-

ested email [email protected] or call Maria Pranger

at (319)429-4920.

Scrip News Picture this! You order a new washing machine, use gift

cards to pay for it, and just like that you earn $40 back.

Stop for burgers on the way home and earn another $5. Fill

up the truck, $2 more. Order some new tennis shoes when

you get home. Now you are at $50.

How can this be? It's possible with scrip! How does it work?

St. Patrick School purchases gift cards from popular retail-

ers, restaurants, and more at less than face value. You buy

them at full price and use them when you shop or dine out

or need a service. You haven't spent an extra penny, but

you have earned $50 for the school and $25 for your

student’s tuition.

Choose "Order Scrip" from the parish or school home page

to learn more. You can use a paper order form, order by

email, or buy scrip online. Scrip makes great gifts too!

The next Baptism class will be offered on:

Monday, September 20 at 6:30 PM via Zoom.

Register online (Under the “Get Involved” Tab, click on

“Sacraments”) or call the parish office. Class is required for

the first child only.

Parents are asked to contact the parish office at 319-266-

3523 to schedule your child’s Baptism. Due to the

pandemic, baptisms are conducted outside of Mass.
