The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People
Authored by Stephen R Covey
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a
habit.-- Aristotle
Habit 1: Be Proactive
I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of
man to elevate his life by conscious endeavor.
-- Henry David Thorea
Habit 1: Be Proactive
Circle of Concern vs Circle of Influence.
Proactive people focus their efforts in the Circle of Influence.
Reactive people, on the other hand, focus their efforts in the Circle of Concern.
Mahatma Gandhi.
Habit 1: Be Proactive
Regretting the past. Make promises, make commitments,
keep them.
Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind
What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared
to what lies within us.-- Oliver Wendell Holme
Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind
Everything is created twice. To have a clear understanding of
your destination. Effective vs Efficient.
"Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things."
Habit 3: Put First Things First
Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which
matter least.-- Goethe
Habit 3: Put First Things First Urgency-Importance matrix. Quadrant I - crises. Over-consumed by Quadrant III. Leaving out Quadrant II. Our effectiveness take quantum
leaps on doing Quadrant II activities. Pareto Principle -- 80 percent of the
results flow out of 20 percent of the activities.
Habit 3: Put First Things First What it Takes to Say "No" If you need an Yes to Quadrant II, you
require a No to Quadrant III, IV. Decide what your highest priorities are. Courage – pleasantly and non-
apologetically -to say “No” to other things.
And the way you do that is by having a bigger “Yes” burning inside.
Habit 3: Put First Things First The enemy of the "best" is often the
"good.“ "If you want to get something done,
give it to a busy man."
Habit 4: Think Win-Win
We have committed the Golden Rule to memory; let us now commit it to
life.-- Edwin Markha
Habit 4: Think Win-Win
A total philosophy of human interaction. Win-Lose, Lose-Win, Lose-Lose, Win and Win-Win or No Deal. Twice as tough as win-lose. Abundance Mentality - the paradigm that
there is plenty out there for everybody. Balance between courage and
consideration.
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
The heart has its reasons which reason
knows not of.-- Pascal
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
Always seek first to understand – Circle of Influence.
Seeking to be understood – Circle of Concern.
You listen, your Circle of Influence grow.
Ability to appreciate people more. To touch the soul of another human
being is to walk on holy ground.
Habit 6: Synergize
I take as my guide the hope of a saintin crucial things, unity --
in important things, diversity --in all things, generosity
-- Inaugural Address of President George Bush
Habit 6: Synergize
"One plus one can be four, eight or sixteen. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.”
All people see the world, not as it is, but as they are.
Look beyond the two alternatives – yours an the wrong one.
There's almost always a Third Alternative.
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw
Sometimes when I consider what tremendous consequences come
from little things.... I amtempted to think...there are no little
things.-- Bruce Barton
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw Preserving and enhancing the greatest
asset you have - you. The Physical Dimension – Nurturing and
exercising your body. The Spiritual Dimension - Your
commitment to your value system. The Mental Dimension – Literature and
arts."The person who doesn't read is no better off than the
person who can't read."
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw
Scripting Others"Treat a man as he is and he will remain as he is. Treat a man as
he can and should be and he will become as he can and should be.“ – Goethe.
No quick fixes to build a personality of integrity."That which we persist in doing becomes easier -- not that the
nature of thetask has changed, but our ability to do has increased.“ – Emerson.
Thank You..!!!
"We must not cease from exploration. And the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we began and to know the place for the first time.“
T.S. Eliot
