PPRREESSIIDDEENNTT’’SS RREEPPOORRTT The 2003 season opened with much anticipation for the 70th Birthday celebrations, the State U13 Championship, the new playing surfaces at Downey Park and of course the start of a new season. What was not foreseen was the upheaval of many board positions. It was an honour to be elected to the position of President in July when due to personal reasons Robin Roberts had to resign. Robin’s contribution over the past few years has been commendable and all board members and committee members who came in contact with Robin would know that many of the policies and procedures that we now have in place were due to her dedication and endurance. To take stock of the situation at this point - we had lost our Vice-President, Sue Barsby, who took on a role in our development area but we were lucky enough to secure the services of Liz O’Connor who had in previous years been our Honorary Solicitor. Due to personal reasons Ruth Grim had to resign from Management – Infra-structure Portfolio (House and Grounds), this position was not filled and with myself stepping into President, the portfolio of Events and Marketing was left vacant. So in summary we were 2 people down on Management. But the strengths that enabled our association to get through the past 70 years, teamwork, dedication and communication came to the forefront. We finished the year i.e. we got through Presidents Cup, Jewels in Crown Game, Downey Park Dinner, BWHA President’s Medal Dinner and Grand Final Days. I would like to take this opportunity to thank management people: - Jenny Heron, Lyn Thomas, Kym Bell, Meg Brodie, Mary Cockings, Liz O’Connor and Desley Mackay; Administration Staff Kathy Duggan, Stacey Williamson, Sue Barsby and Louise Alexander; and the volunteers Joyce Proctor, Jenny Tidey, Keith Tidey and Caroline Schomberg for ensuring that all this did happen. One of the many highlights of the year was the State Under 13 Championship held at Downey Park in July. From all accounts the championship was a success and this was due to the work of Marilyn Chatfield and her never ending supply of volunteers. As mentioned previously it was BWHA’s 70th birthday this year and to ensure that it received the recognition it deserved a group of our “Hockey Family” formed a committee to overseas all proceedings. Celebrations in the way of morning teas, Saturday get-togethers and the finale “Jewels of the Crown” exhibition match ensured bringing back a lot of past players and members to Downey Park. It is hoped that these faces do not disappear now that the celebrations are over. It is our endeavour to ensure that our members are provided with the best facilities that the association can afford and through the work of Mary in conjunction with the Queensland Women’s Amateur Sports Council it was great to see the upgrade of many of our fields. As you are aware these upgrades do cost a lot of money and I am sure that all members are appreciative of the $1.38 million spent to date by the Brisbane City Council and the State Government. Work is now being done to source money for the upgrade of Rasey Park and Fields 7, 10, 13. Work commenced near the end of the season on the Public Toilet Facilities, which now have been finished. This year brought the introduction of the Downey Park Dinner, which was welcomed by all players. A few issues in regards to the awarding of points needs to be finalised but other than that it was well received and well attended. I am sure that it will grow over time and that the next few years will see a format emerge. I believe Judy Keen has already started to work on her material for next year. The BWHA dinner was held at Kedron Wavell Services Club. I believe the success of the night is shown by the amount of people you need to evict at the end of the night and by this measurement it was a highly successful night. BWHA faired well on the field with their representative honours. The season started well with both the Swifts and the Scorpions taking honours in the Southern Cross League. In May our First team won the Premier League, June saw our Open team come 3rd and Under 13 & Under 15 teams come 4th. The Veterans in July finished 3rd and the season finished with a convincing 1st at the Under 18 State Championships. Full details of all team results at State Championships and at the Southern Crosses are shown later in this Annual Report. Congratulations to all our BWHA Representative Players and Officials for your efforts as ambassadors for our association. To those people who gained Queensland or Australian Representation we wish you the best for your future development in hockey. Thank you to the Development Department of BWHA for their hard work in preparing all our teams.

Now that the season has finished only through the sheer determination of certain people, management can sit back and review the year and put measures in place that we believe will ensure the smooth running of the association and the development of hockey at all levels. One of the first changes to be introduced was nomination for a portfolio. This mainly came about by the turnover of people on management this year. It was decided that as everyone’s time is so precious if you require someone to give up a good amount of time then it would need to be for something they were interested in. Hence we are asking members to nominate for a specific portfolio. The second major change to be introduced is the phasing out of the position of Honorary Secretary to Administration Manager/Executive Officer. With the introduction of an Administration Manager and the Portfolio of Fixtures and Grading the role of Secretary has relatively become obsolete so it was decided by Management to make the Secretary a paid position (the current Administration Manager Role) and free up the extra position on the Board of Management to take on another portfolio. Another major change for next year is the abolishment of the Queensland Women’s Amateur Sports Council. This will mean that BWHA will become joint tenants on the lease with Brisbane Softball. This is a sad time, as the QWASC has lead the development of Downey Park and Women’s Sport in our community with pride and commitment. To all the members of QWASC past and present we salute you for the tireless effort you have put into our Downey Park. As our planning sessions finish and the 2004 season begins there will be other changes that we will put to the members which we believe will benefit our association and its’ members. As President of the Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association I will ensure that Management governs the association as per the constitution and the by-laws, and that all decisions are made with the associations’ members best interests in mind. Lisa-Maree Jones President.

SSEECCRREETTAARRYY’’SS RREEPPOORRTT 2002 NNOOVVEEMMBBEERR Congratulations to Mary Cockings who received a Life Membership at the AGM in November 2002. Everyone knows the hard work and tireless dedication that Mary has to hockey and BWHA. Many were surprised that she was not already a Life Member! DDEECCEEMMBBEERR While most people were enjoying the break from hockey and having fun playing summer hockey the Board of Management for 2003 was already engaged in planning for 2004 to facilitate a successful season. 2003 JJAANNUUAARRYY January is a very important month in terms of administration, as this is when the administration folders are handed out to the secretaries of all the clubs. These folders contain a wealth of information about BWHA with important dates and our policies and procedures. FFEEBBRRUUAARRYY BWHA was as successful as it was possible to be in the Southern Cross League this year, with both the Scorpions and the Swifts being awarded 1st place after their final was rained out. The grading matches for turf were held in February as was the turf umpires, captains and coaches meeting where the new rules on penalty corners and lifted sticks in defence were explained. Our talented Development team ran a special program for U/15 development. MMAARRCCHH In March turf fixtures commenced and the grass umpires, captains and coaches meeting was held, along with a meeting for umpiring mentors and assessors. BWHA sent a team to the U/15 Southern Cross at the Gold Coast. We are fortunate to have Downey Park as a facility for women’s sport. We are also fortunate in the recent grants given by the Queensland Government and the Brisbane City Council through Queensland Women’s Amateur Sports Council where most of our fields have been upgraded. However, Downey Park requires constant maintenance as we share it with members of the public and with softball in summer. In March we held our Junior and Senior Working Bees to clean, repair and prepare the fields and facilities for another season.

AAPPRRIILL This year was a very celebratory one for Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association. This year the Association turned 70 years young. To celebrate BWHA held a 70th Birthday Celebration Lunch in conjunction with the first day of fixtures at Downey Park. We were fortunate at this lunch to have our Patron, members of Queensland Women’s Amateur Sports Council and many of our Life and Honorary Members attend to hear our guest speaker, Nikki Hudson. BWHA also launched a range of clothing to celebrate our 70th Birthday (and to whoever designed the jersey I would just like to say it is awesome and very warm). MAY BWHA entered two teams in the Premier League held at the State Hockey Centre and our first team won. BWHA also sent teams to the U/13 Southern Cross. The U/11 Development at Downey Park run by our Development team was well attended. The turf divisions’ President’s Cup matches were held on the 27th of May, congratulations to all involved. JJUUNNEE BWHA sent teams to the Veteran’s Southern Cross in Ipswich and to the State Open Championships in Townsville. June was also the month in which the Player’s Paper loomed. However, this was actually very successful with most players completing it and some commenting that it was useful to ‘learn the rules (!)’. The 70th birthday celebrations continued with a successful past players’ morning tea. JJUULLYY The U/13 State Championship with teams coming in from all over Queensland was successfully hosted by BWHA at Downey Park and opened by our patron, Cr Maureen Hayes. The Southern Skies Tournament with teams visiting from all over the southern hemisphere was held at the State Hockey Centre and Shawsportz Burringbar turf. Attending the Northern Universities Games at the same time, I wished the canteen at the State Hockey Centre was as well supplied and priced as the BWHA canteen at Downey Park. The DP1 to DP6 President’s Cup matches were held at Downey Park with some of our Life Members coming out to judge the players of the match. AAUUGGUUSSTT In August, the U/11 Southern Cross was held at Downey Park. This year the inaugural Downey Park Dinner was held at the BWHA Clubhouse and the BWHA Annual Dinner was again held at the Kedron-Wavell Services Club. Both dinners were well attended. Congratulations to all award winners. Continuing the 70th Birthday celebrations, BWHA hosted the “Jewels in our Crown” old style game at Downey Park. BWHA also introduced a new photography policy to protect the privacy of our players. SSEEPPTTEEMMBBEERR The Grass Grand Finals were held at Downey Park, while the Turf Grand Finals were held at the State Hockey Centre in conjunction with Brisbane Hockey Association. The Grand Final days were again a great success. BWHA also sent a team to the U/18 State Championships at Murwillumbah. OOCCTTOOBBEERR Summer hockey commenced at the State Hockey Centre, with masters, six-a-side and the very popular mixed competition all being played. Nominations were also due in for the 2004 Board of Management. It has been decided that, as allowed by our Rules of Association, Kathy Duggan will take on the position of Secretary. It would be difficult to think of a more suitable person for the job and I wish Kathy the very best. TTHHAANNKKSS IINN AAPPPPRREECCIIAATTIIOONN Running a large organisation such as BWHA with over two thousand players each week and a million dollar annual turnover requires a dedicated team of staff and volunteers. It’s not always easy to do, and sometimes it may feel as though no one acknowledges your hard work. Please be assured that all who contribute to BWHA, even in the smallest ways, are greatly appreciated because it is on the valuable contributions of many people that BWHA has grown to be such a fantastic organisation. We are already the biggest association in Queensland, and we strive to be the best. A big Thank You to:

• Our Patron, Cr Maureen Hayes, for her continual advocacy for BWHA and women’s sport.

• The Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council for their support of BWHA and the fields and facilities at Downey Park.

TTRREEAASSUURREERR’’SS RREEPPOORRTT

I am writing my report on the assumption that the accounts, presently with our auditor, are correct. Hopefully we will have them back in time to include with our Annual Report otherwise they will be an appendix - as last year. Once again we have come in with a surplus, which was great news. The anticipated increases from Hockey Queensland came in as detailed in 2002 ie: Registrations - $45,000; Insurance - $64,000(approx.). On the plus side the anticipated increase in Downey Park rent ($3,200) did not occur this year. Our guarantee for the State Hockey Centre Inc. is $65,000 and we have now fully covered this with a term deposit. Outstanding debtors were an increase this year. This was because we had $5,800 outstanding from Brisbane City Council that related to the painting of all sheds on Downey Park by our marvelous graffiti artist Mr. Michael Newman. I am pleased to report that most debts have now been paid. Many thanks to all clubs, seniors and juniors for their co-operation and courtesy at all times. A special thank you to Karen Hickling BWHA Junior Treasurer. Thank you to all Committees for their dedication to limiting expenditure to within their budgets. WELL DONE. Our honorary auditor for the past few years, Mrs. Julie Bennett, found it impossible to continue especially with her family commitments so a very big thank you to Julie and the best of everything for the future. We welcome this year Ms. Gail Reynolds who has "volunteered" to be our auditor. Having known Gail for a number of years I trust she is still speaking to me by the end of November as I gave her to understand this was an easy position to fill by someone with her outstanding abilities. Our sponsors Schweppes, Country Bake and Streets are still with us and I thank them sincerely for their continued support. Finally my sincere thanks to Brisbane Management for their support and encouragement throughout the season. Thanks to Lisa-Maree Jones for your assistance whenever I needed it. Of course I could not hold this portfolio (no one could) without the invaluable help and effort of Kathy Duggan. (I think Kath would gladly "choke" me at times). Well done Kath also for all your time and effort you put into this association in all areas. I wish everyone a safe and happy new year. See you all next season. Merry Xmas. Mary Cockings Treasurer

Another year has finished and report time again. The Committee met during the year and discussed several changes we felt were needed to bring the By-Laws and some items in the Rules needing some further action. The Committee left some actions to Ronda Nix and myself to determine as to what actions were felt to be included to upgrade the documents and report back to the Committee before any action was taken. We are still coming to grips with the full measures needed and we hope to have something in the near future to report back for further discussions on action needed. I would like to thank the Committee members for the assistance given in the past year in all matters raised and wish all a prosperous and happy Christmas and New Year. Keith Tidey Convenor

CCOOMMPPEETTIITTIIOONNSS PPOORRTTFFOOLLIIOO RREEPPOORRTTSS TURF 2003 had an influx of affiliations for the turf divisions, nine for Division 1, seven for Division 2, ten for Division 3 and seven for Division 4. This resulted in one challenge game for division 1 between Norths 1 and Bulimba 1 with Bulimba winning the tussle and moving to Division 1. Norths 1 now in Division 2 meant that Division 2 was complete. Seventeen teams vied for the sixteen spots in division 3 and 4. Grading Games were held in February between University, Norths, St Andrews and South West United for the Division 3 spots. South West United were the unsuccessful team and were relegated to Division 4. Norths and Bulimba played off for the final position in Division 4 and Norths were the unsuccessful team. The turf season commenced on the 1st March, this was to accommodate the lost fixture days due to Premier League, National Championships and Intercity Games that take precedence over our fixtures. BWHA played six fixtures each Saturday at the State Hockey Centre starting at 10.45 am and finishing at 7.30 pm and two at Burringbar Park at 1.45 and 3.15 pm. Sunday fixtures were from 10.45 until 7.30 pm and at BP at 10.45 and 12.15. During April Brisbane Hockey Association asked if BWHA would be interested in swapping timeslots as their junior association was having difficulties with the afternoon times. This resulted in our utilising both fields at SHC in the 1.45 and 3.15 timeslots. Well done to Norths 1 and South West United 1 who were the two teams relegated at the start of the season, they both won their Premierships and because of their position in the points table at the end of the season are both eligible to apply for upgrading in 2004. Congratulations to all teams who were President’s Cup winners, Minor Premiers and Premiers. This year was the first time in many years when the 8 teams in the Grand Final were from different clubs, showing that each club is moving forward. I commend all clubs on their sportsmanship and professionalism at both turf venues and thank all club representatives who manned the tech bench as part of their club responsibility.

DOWNEY PARK – GRASS Sixty-one teams affiliated for the Downey Park divisions at the start of the season. After withdrawals the divisions DP1 to DP4 had ten teams, DP5 – eight teams and DP6 with 6 teams. These divisions didn’t require any grading games as everything eventually evened out. To all President’s Cup winners, Minor Premiers and Premiers, congratulations. MONDAY MASTERS Twelve teams affiliated for the Masters competition. After the first round, it was decided to split the competition into two pools in an endeavour to even out the games and the results verified this. The Masters were played at both SHC and BP and another successful season with hard fought finals in the main draw and the second pool. SPORTS TRAINERS BWHA has a policy in place that all fixtures will be covered by a Sports Trainer. This is a very big endeavour to ensure that all fixtures juniors (SHC, BP, Downey Park and Rasey Park), seniors (SHC, BP, Downey Park and Rasey Park) and masters (SHC and BP) have a qualified person at each venue. Thank you to all who worked throughout the season to ensure our players were back on the field as soon as possible. Also thank you to our Physios and Sports Trainers who travelled away with our representative teams, another job well done. TECHNICAL Our turf fixtures would not run as smoothly as they do without two very special volunteers, Mary Cockings and Lyn Thomas who man the tech bench every weekend. A very big thank you for all your time, expertise and patience that ensures every game runs to time and with the least amount of interruption.

Also thank you to the many others – Cheryl Kann, Marilyn Chatfield, Nadine Hughes, Jenny Tidey, Helen Hill, Helen Allan to name a few who cover the tech bench when asked. June Snarski is the Time Steward at Downey Park and does an admirable job to keep our games on time and running smoothly. Thanks. The Fixture & Grading Committee is covered by a Turf and a Grass component and I thank all, Robyn Andersen, Lisa-Maree Jones, Marilyn Chatfield, Di Brodie, Andi Fiske and Wendy Stephens for their time and commitment to all our members ensuring that the fixtures are completed as soon as possible. The Records Section of Annual Report will attest to how keenly fought all divisions were. Club players, officials and supporters have been very conscience of the BWHA rules and regulations and I thank them for adhering to these so that another successful season could be achieved. Hope you enjoyed the 2003 season. A big thank you to all Senior and Junior Management members for your support throughout the year, best wishes for the many planning meetings in the off-season leading up to the AGM. Enjoy the Christmas break and look forward to seeing all in 2004. Jenny Heron Competitions Portfolio Manager MATCH SECRETARY REPORT Once again, this year’s fixture season proved to be very competitive in all divisions. Norths 1, replaced in Division 1 by Bulimba, fought long and hard in an exciting final to win Division 2 on strokes. Bulimba, in their first season in Division 1 showed early promise by wining one game and drawing another in the first round. After a barren middle round, they came back in round three to record one win and two draws. The new format for the Monday Masters with a record twelve teams competing proved successful and popular with the majority of Clubs. Again the wisdom of the Grading Committee was confirmed when most of the divisions went down to the last fixture match to decide teams and positions for the semi-finals. The withdrawal of several teams after initial gradings were completed caused some confusion in the lower Downey Park Divisions but all teams played a minimum of seventeen fixture matches. Five teams (Commercial 1, South West United 1, Easts 5, Pine Hills 3 and Commercial 8) took out the trifecta winning the President’s Cup, the Minor Premiership and the Premiership. As indicated above, the Grading Committees must be congratulated once again on a job well done. Sincere thanks must also go to the Turf umpires for their diligence in awarding Best & Fairest points in all fixture games. Their efforts make our Awards Night possible. Thanks must again be proffered to June Snarski at Downey Park, Mary Cockings at State Hockey Centre and Jenny Tidey and Cheryl Kann at Burringbar Park for keeping our games on schedule. Thanks also to those willing volunteers who stepped in when we were caught short for technical officials to supervise fixtures. Nadine Hughes, Jenny Heron, Helen Hill, Marilyn Chatfield, Rhonda Bentley, Joyce Proctor, Pam Hockaday and others I may have overlooked all contributed. Your willingness to help out kept our fixtures running smoothly. Congratulations and many thanks to Clubs for your assistance in getting captains to fill in our cards correctly and in chasing up missing cards. Your support makes my job less onerous. Lyn Thomas Match Secretary TURF UMPIRES’ STEWARD REPORT Building on the 2002 introduction of Mentors, BWHA was fortunate this year to have the services of Jan Hadfield, a FIH Umpires Manager, to mentor and coach the Division 1 Umpires, who all appreciated the weekly feedback.

The Mentor programme continued this year, mainly for Division 2 umpires. Thank you once again to BWHA Management for their support, and to the Division 1 umpires who mentored and assessed this season. They really do make a significant commitment to fostering umpires. Thank you also to Heather Scraggs who assessed Division 3 & 4 umpires this season. Finally, special thanks to Lyn Thomas, Jenny Heron and Lyn Hill for their support and encouragement all season. Cheryl Kann Turf Steward Divisions 2 – 4. GRASS UMPIRES’ STEWARD REPORT Congratulations to the umpires at Downey Park who were awarded badges in 2003. It is hard and sometimes thankless work. This year we asked senior umpires to sign in with the time steward as the juniors do. This resulted is less umpiring defaulters and less games where there were no umpires at the start of the game. Also the umpires’ committee developed a handout each week which gave information on various rules which was read by the umpires to the players at the start of each game. This did help to improve the player’s general knowledge of the game. I have enjoyed working with the players who have been tested for badges and salute their commitment to umpiring almost every week and hope there will be more next year. It has been heartening to see some clubs accept their responsibility to increase their pool of umpires and to actively assist them. Other clubs need to recognise that BWHA require an umpire for every team every week. Where a club has a few umpires they tend to umpire every week. When clubs register teams thought must be given to umpiring requirements. A problem is the quality of the umpires in the lower grades. During the season I have endeavoured to give the lower grades some higher ranked umpires to help them enjoy their hockey. We are gradually increasing the number of umpires being tested on the lower grades which brings mentors and testers to these games. My thanks to Lyn Thomas who has an enormous knowledge and is so willing to help, without her assistance the season would have been chaotic. Gaye Henderson and Sonya Fisher made a difference by assessing umpires and giving feedback. They also had much help from Lyn and Cheryl. Also many thanks to umpires who were willing to do whatever was asked. My thoughts turn to, Chris West, Penny Truslove, Marg Brown, Donna Gallagher, Lesley Bennett, Jodie Dodd, Nadia Zaluki, Tammy Takac, Jodie Mapp, Ruth Bloxham and the many others who stepped into the breech. My profound thanks to the club umpire’s convenors who patiently survived my steep learning curve and the many changes I made when my errors were found. Thank you, one and all. PORTFOLIO REPORT I was honoured to step into the role as Vice-President, responsible for development in February 2003, upon the retirement of Marilyn Chatfield after many years distinguished service in the role. Sue Barsby, after her election at the 2002 AGM moved on to take up a much needed role as Development Administration Assistant. I had only been in the role a short time before appreciating the enormity of Marilyn’s contribution and vast experience in guiding Development into the professional and hard-working team it is today. A big thank you to Marilyn. The Development team is:- Sharyn Simpson- Regional Coaching Director

Margaret Dilger- Regional Development Officer Sue Barsby-Administration Assistant Part of the RCD’s salary is reimbursed by Hockey Queensland and a small State Government Grant goes towards other salary costs. The introduction of the RDO role (part-time), and in particular Margaret’s commitment to the role, brought immediate results in the U/11 Development Program. Margaret and her selectors processed over 150 nominations for 4 teams in a short period. Success should not only be measured in those selected for representative teams, but for those girls who came away from the program as better players for the experience of having been involved in the program. The RDO role allowed the RCD to focus on open, U/18 and U/15 hockey, with excellent championship results. Performance criteria for the RCD and RDO roles include their own professional development. Sharyn and Margaret have excelled in this area. Sharyn’s state and national roles in past years have culminated in her appointment as manager for the Hockeyroos for the 2004 Athens Olympics. Margaret was been appointed Assistant Coach for the National U18 Team and Coach of the victorious Queensland U18 Team in 2003. In addition, both Sharyn and Margaret have been accepted to undertake the level 3 NCAS coaching course- the only women ever to do so in Australia. Despite these successes, Sharyn and Margaret remain focussed on BWHA Development. And, as the saying goes ‘success breeds success’. During Sharyn and Margaret’s absences for state and national commitments, others have stepped up to undertake development roles and excelled in those roles under the guidance of Sharyn and Margaret. This has provided the BWHA with much confidence as it strives towards fulfilling the many development tasks, most of which are not glamorous, but in their totality contribute to the continued development of BWHA players, coaches, umpires and officials. Next season we look forward to recognising the diversity of others and their skills in a more formal and structured development team! Finally, my thanks to Kathy Duggan and my fellow management committee members, who selflessly devote long hours and their vast experience to making it all happen. This year for the first time ever Hockey Queensland selected an U/15 Queensland Team from the State Championships to participate in the National Championships in Darwin June/July School Holidays. This meant that it was an early start to the season for our U15 players commencing training and selections in February. Despite this early start the players selected were thoroughly prepared for the championships held in Cairns late April. Next year the championships will revert back to the June/July school holidays. BWHA hosted the State U/13 Championship at Downey Park in June/July school holidays. We were fortunate enough to have 5 teams compete during the week. This gave an extra 27 players the opportunity to enjoy and experience representative hockey. Planning for the 2004 year is well and truly underway and the programs offered to our players each year have been expanded and adapted to suit the ever-changing needs of the hockey community. Other player development opportunities contested during 2003 were: 1. BWHA Team participated in the Southern Skies Tournament. 2. U/18 Team played against a visiting USA Development team. 3. BWHA Open Team played practice match vs Ipswich 4. U/15 Representative Team played 2 x Curtain Raiser matches for Southern Cross League. 5. U/11, U/13, U/15, U/18 and Open Southern Cross Competitions Apart from the Development Programs and Selection trials held annually for U/18,U/15,U/13 and U/11 age divisions further programs and trainings were conducted as follows: 1. 10 Skills Sessions Feb-March 2003 State U18 and BWHA U18 and U21 Players. 2. 3 Skills Session June 2003 State U15 players. 3. 3 Skills Session August 2003 BWHA U18 Players. 4. U/11, U/13 and U/15 players’ parents meeting with RCD were conducted if requested. 5. 2 x BWHA Indoor Hockey Teams will participate in fixtures. Division Two and Division Three. During the year many Australian and Queensland Representative players have supported our player development area by facilitating as Coaches. Our BWHA players thoroughly enjoy their involvement. On behalf of all our BWHA players I would like to wish them continued success for their future hockey careers and thank them for their support during the year.

CCOOAACCHH DDEEVVEELLOOPPMMEENNTT One of the most promising things to report was the reestablishment of the Coaches’ Committee lead by Chairperson Kym Roberson. Meetings were conducted during the year and areas were identified for the committee to generate their energies towards during 2004. New planning will recommence after the Annual General Meeting and the new committee is in place. Areas recognized for attention are as follows;

• Data-Base on going (Thank-you to Kate Roberson for her assistance with this)

• Improved Communication between BWHA and Club Coaches. e.g. Web page.

• Coach Awards

• Coach Education, Workshops and Accreditation

• Support to BWHA representative coaches.

Part of my responsibility as RDC is to identify Coaches for prospective representative duties and this task has become increasingly more difficult with the number of persons nominating for BWHA representative duties shrinking from year to year. We also experience difficulties finding enough interested people to assist with our development programs conducted annually. One of many important roles of the committee will be the assistance given in working towards solving these ongoing problems. Additional coaching activities held this year were the following:

• 1 x Level One Course

• Level O Course and Minkey and Modified Guides Day

• Coach mentoring, individual meetings and match observations.

• U/13 Coaches Workshop held during the State U/13 Championships

• Co-ordinating U18 Coaches Workshop held during the State U18 Championships THANK YOU Congratulations to the Junior Management team lead by Chairperson Desley Mackay for a job well done, your enthusiasm and fervour in which you attacked any challenges was exemplary. I look forward to working with you all and am confident that we will achieve and share greater success in 2004. Also thanks to the administration assistance given by Kathy Duggan, Sue Barsby and Stacey Williamson. It is the aim of any sportsperson to achieve their dream and there is no doubt for me that my dream to go to the Olympics came true this year with my appointment as Manager of the Hockeyroos. In pursuit of this dream for many years, I have been very fortunate to have received tremendous support from not only my family and friends but also the BWHA hockey community. A huge THANK-YOU!!!! I would like to especially acknowledge the assistance and encouragement given by BWHA and Board of Management since my employment 6 years ago. It has been greatly appreciated and I will endeavour to use whatever knowledge I gather from my experiences, in making the BWHA development area even better. Lastly, I would like to thank Margaret Dilger, Development Officer for continually taking up the extra workload that occurred during my absences. I am hugely indebted to her and also grateful for the expertise she brings to the Development area. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Sharyn Simpson BWHA Regional Director of Coaching CCOOAACCHHIINNGG CCOOMMMMIITTTTEEEE I would from the outset like to thank the members of the Coaching Committee Nikki Taylor, Sue Brough, Lyn Quirk, Cathy Taylor-Alt and Sharyn Simpson for their participation in the work achieved this year. This group of people already heavily committed to hockey in numerous ways still find time to contribute towards endeavors to improve the coach support system. The committee’s profile has been relatively low throughout the year but there has been a purpose in that strategy.

The coaches committee from the outset identified the need to re-establish this committee as a valuable resource within the hockey environment. While not all our goals were reached, we have, we believe set up an easy and sustainable framework within the new constitution and by-laws from which any new incoming committee members can continue the work relatively easily. We believe that it is essential for clubs to embrace the concept, take all and any opportunity to have some input so that coaches at all levels within a club or association feel supported, appreciated and most importantly remain in the game. It would have been terrific success to have reached that stage this year but time beat our efforts. I am hopeful that in the season of 2004 with support from clubs, both the committee and clubs will see results of the groundwork put in place now. The committee has had some preliminary discussion on next year and the role we can play within the association but the incoming committee members will make those decisions in conjunction with the regional coaching director and support of BWHA management. Kym Roberson Chairperson Coaching Committee RREEGGIIOONNAALL DDEEVVEELLOOPPMMEENNTT OOFFFFIICCEERR ((RRDDOO)) Resuming work in February after a two-month leave of absence, I was straight into the schools. Numerous expos and schools have been attended this year, but as always, we can always look to do more. It is encouraging to see the number of schools embracing hockey as a sport for their students. Next year the Development Department hope to implement an option for clubs to become more involved with schools and using the school coaching as an avenue for coach mentoring and development. In the absence of the Coaching director, I undertook those duties and tried very hard to turn on her lap-top and keep the job up-to-date for her return. Numerous players have made representative teams and should be congratulated on their achievements. They all would have worked hard and can now enjoy the benefits of that hard work. To Kathy and the office staff – Stacey and Sue – an enormous thanks. To Sharyn - congratulations on the Olympic appointment. I know how much it means to you and know you will represent Australia proudly in Athens. Both Junior and Senior Management have been extremely supportive of the RDO position and the role it has within BWHA and the role I have with Hockey Queensland. For this I am thankful. It is comforting to know that supportive employers, who encourage you to extend yourself, are in the sporting world. To all concerned with hockey, I wish you the best of the Festive Season and hope to see you return, with friends, next year. Margaret Dilger BWHA RDO

UUMMPPIIRREESS’’ CCOOMMMMIITTTTEEEE The second year into mentoring and payment for umpires has seen an improvement in umpiring standards. But as with all things, improvement and progression needs to happen. Turf and grass meetings were held early in the year and were attended by the dedicated faithful. Committee meetings were held throughout the year and were well attended. The players’ rules exam was conducted. All players had to sit the exam and pass before being able to play the next fixture match. This was an enormous task and could only be undertaken with the help and experience of the office staff and Lyn Thomas. To those who have passed their tests and received badges – well done, we hope to see you returning with re-newed enthusiasm next year. To those that may have fallen just a bit short of the badge mark, I encourage you to make the most of the experienced people we have within BWHA and ask for more games and feedback to help you become the best you can. Best wishes for the Holiday Season as we look forward to the next hockey season already. Margaret Dilger BWHA RDO

UUNNIIFFOORRMMSS && EEQQUUIIPPMMEENNTT It has been a big year for BWHA with the introduction of a new uniform, being worn by U13 up to Veterans. Made from Cherry Lycra, the uniform consists of a six gored skirt and a singlet style top with a diagonal Yellow & Royal stripe on the front. We outfitted and sold apparel to 20 Senior Teams and 18 Junior Teams this year. Each year you learn to be that bit more efficient and with the help of team managers we seem to have coped very well. Special thanks to Sue Barsby and Jenny Tidey I wouldn’t have been able to do the job, without their help. Rhonda Bentley Equipment and Uniform Officer TTOOUURRSS RREEPPOORRTT Another successful year with all Brisbane teams in all ages competing well - our Premier League and U18 Brisbane 1 teams won their pools. We also had a large number of players selected for Qld. BWHA Management introduced our new uniforms this year for Under 13 players and upwards, with an initial mixed response from some. All the players looked good and once worn the uniforms felt good on. In our “not so cold’ winter, the uniforms were well received. Many positive comments (and enquiries) came out of our U13 Championships, which may result in many more centres opting for a more modern style in the future. Again, BWHA subsidised most tours this year, resulting in a loss for this area. However, with Apparel now included in this section, the small amount of profit has off-set some tour costs. There is stock left on hand this year which would have covered the deficit. This stock is needed early next year so, hopefully, we will show a small profit. This year was a learning process - gauging players needs for every tour is hard but now with actual figures and a knowledge of player requirements, stock will be available when ordered, resulting in less stock left on hand after each tour. GGRROOUUNNDDSS RREEPPOORRTT FIELDS The upgrade of fields 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 9, 11 and 12 has now been completed. (Field 8 was done previously). We still need something done with fields 7, 10, 13 and of course Rasey Park. The renovations of these fields are still the subject of ongoing discussions with the Brisbane City Council. With the changes of circumstances regarding leases on Downey Park it is hoped that our association and Brisbane Softball Association will be forming a joint grounds committee to work together to eliminate some of the problems associated with our two sports in relation to upkeep of the grounds. It is very difficult to change from softball to hockey (and vice versa) with only 2-3 weeks in between seasons and therefore it is imperative that we have your full co-operation for our " working bees " at the beginning of our season. We would also appreciate more members on our grounds committee. The grounds complaint forms are available, (on Saturdays) from our competition office and we encourage you to use these forms if you see something that needs our attention on a Monday morning such as holes on fields or perhaps a net needed urgent attention. Your submissions will be taken very seriously and attended to ASAP. The council has erected water bubblers (even if in the wrong place) along fields 7 and 8. THANK YOU'S

Councillor (and Deputy Lord Mayor) Maureen Hayes for your continued support for BWHA. The Brisbane City Council and the Qld Government for the amount of renovations you have done at

To Queensland Women's Amateur Sports Council for your continued support and it is most unfortunate this wonderful organisation will be disbanded within the next 6 months.

To the BWHA grounds committee Jenny Tidey, Bev Broadfoot, Caroline Schomberg, Joyce Proctor, Robyn Sneddon and John Bigg.

I would be remiss if I did not finish this report with a few words about John Bigg. John as you know is our groundsman but he is also very versatile in doing just about every "odd job" we dream up. He is very dedicated to his beloved Downey Park and works extremely hard to have the fields playable every week. It is sometimes a thankless task as he receives some frivolous complaints that leave him asking, "why do I bother". But he turns up each Monday to do his best for BWHA and its members. Bev Broadfoot takes Annual Leave and or Long Service leave each year to mark fields with John but this year their patience was stretched to the limit when they had to rake and remove grass from every hockey field. I will admit the language at times was very colourful but they did it. Well done the pair of you. John we hope you remain with us for many years to come as you would be sorely missed if you decided to give us away. Merry Xmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. HOUSE REPORT

IMPROVEMENT & MAINTENANCE This year we finally erected our sails in front of the clubhouse and the hockey shop at a cost of $3,002. Also we refurbished the parquetry flooring in the clubhouse. The Brisbane City Council paid for the graffiti work on our sheds. I think every week we had the plumber out for broken toilets, broken toilet seats, someone sat on one of the hand basins in the toilet at Downey Park and we had to relocate one of the basins and redirect our water pipes from the toilet/hand basin areas to another location because of inadequate pipes. We also had a problem with drainage from the umpires’ room and found it was caused by tree branches. We also updated our internal and external P.A. Systems. Of course you have to expect some of these problems when you realise the age of some of these facilities. THE CANTEEN Well what can you say about the staff in our canteen. Aren't they marvelous. Thank you Nerieada and all your happy little workers. This year the canteen worked especially hard as we hosted the Under 13's state championships, which was a great success. As usual the food was very good and well priced. It will please our turf players to know that from next season the canteen at the State Hockey Centre will, wherever possible, have prices and stock very similar to our canteen. Members of Legends board visited our canteen in September and were most impressed with our food and staff. Well done Nerieada. BAR Once again the bar was a disappointment not because of lack of variety in our stock or lack of service by our staff. We are now looking at other incentives to encourage more members, friends and visitors to use our facilities. Thank you Caroline (Schomberg), Denise (Byrne), and Angela (Coleman), it certainly was not from all your efforts we did not do as well as expected. I was not overly disappointed in the final figures. HIRE OF CLUBHOUSE We picked up a little in the hiring of the clubhouse, which was good to see. In April we advertised in the Quest newspapers (one only ad) and received quite promising results. In 2004 it is our intention to investigate more ads and other means to get our message across regarding the suitability etc. of our lovely clubhouse. Many thanks to members of the house committee Jenny Tidey, Caroline Schomberg, Bev Broadfoot, Joyce Proctor, Robyn Sneddon, John Bigg. I seem to remember writing you all down previously for another committee? Hoping to see you all back in the 2004 hockey season. Mary Cockings For and on behalf of the House & Grounds Committee.

HOCKEY SHOP As you know Just Hockey stocked and worked the shop this year and didn't they do it well? They will be continuing in 2004 (and beyond we hope). Just Hockey have been awarded the rights to the pro shop at the State Hockey Centre and they are hopeful that this coming season they will have two venues only - No. 1 at State Hockey Centre and No. 2 Downey Park and these venues should appear in their 2004 catalogues. With the stock left after selling a portion to Just Hockey, mark-downs and write offs, the balance of stock was donated to the indigenous program conducted by Julie Bartlett in North Qld. Thank you to all members of the junior management committee who participated in the winding up of this venture. Mary Cockings

EEVVEENNTTSS AANNDD PPRROOMMOOTTIIOONNSS RREEPPOORRTT DDOOWWNNEEYY PPAARRKK DDIINNNNEERR The idea had been thrown around for the past few years that players at Downey Park need to have a dinner at the end of the year like the players on Turf. Although it was decided late in the season enthusiasm ensured that it would be a success. Kym Bell took on the role of organiser, and her choice of spit roast was commendable. As this was the first year ideas on how to tally points were thrown around and it was decided that each team would nominate someone on the back of the card. This was executed well by some teams and not by others. It is with this in mind that next year the cards will be printed with a space for the players name and also it has been decided that each team votes for a player from the opposite team, therefore the awards will be renamed to Players’ Player. With 24 hours notice Judy Keen put her hand up to be the compere but an accident on the way to the dinner (I believe Judy was in character) stopped these proceedings and for the 100th time I would like to thank Kathy Duggan for stepping in on 5 minutes notice. Although the night was organised last minute, attendance of 180 ensures that it was a great success and I am sure that next year will be even bigger. Report from Kym Bell (Organiser) - Our inaugural 'Grass Dinner' was held on the last day of fixtures Saturday 9th August. Approximately 180 people attended and the dinner was a Spit Roast. As this was our first dinner for our Downey Park players our organisers and players decided to keep the night a fairly informal event. There were Lucky Door prizes and raffle tickets were sold for $1 each. All of our prizes were donated and there were many excellent prizes won. Best of Division awards were presented to the winning players from Division 1 to Division 6. While the night was a great success and everyone enjoyed themselves we asked for feedback from our players. Suggestions for next year were to change the name of the dinner from 'grass' to The Downey Park Awards Night; to make sure that we have dessert (which we definitely will do) and to make sure the MC doesn't injure herself on the way to the dinner! I would like to thank everyone involved in helping organise the night and working on the night and especially all the Downey Park players who supported us and came along and had a great time. No doubt this dinner will be one of the highlights of the Downey Park year. BBWWHHAA DDIINNNNEERR Once again we returned to the safety of the Kedron Wavell Services Club for our annual dinner. After quizzing many of the turf teams on what they wanted for a dinner it was decided to keep it simple. So simple and fun it was. As it was our 70th year I wanted someone to host the evening that could give a background on our association, someone who would know the people who have been around the grounds for years. So once again I called on Kathy Duggan to host the night. (She did receive 3 days notice this time, so I was expecting big things). I believe the night was a success and from feedback it was very encouraging. There are some points which need to be worked on – the countdown, each year we try different ways and still I don’t think we have come up with the right format – next year I am sure will be right; music – feed back from different members seems to reflect we may need a jukebox, I think that this may be better than the entertainment this year even though I think Jan Hadfield enjoyed it. I

am happy with the trophies i.e. the bracelets but would like to hear feedback where this is concerned. The introduction of receiving Minor Premiership trophies on this night was well accepted. All in all a good night had by all. If any player is interested in coming on the committee to run the dinners we accept all nominations. Seventy years of amateur sport that was made possible by a group of ladies who loved to play hockey. When hockey first started the girls had to use trams, so they weren’t allowed to wear their uniforms to and from the fields, they had to wear their good clothes on the tram. This meant dress, coat, hat, gloves, handbag, stocking and shoes, imagine the players of today doing this. But they battled on until we had enough money to build our magnificent clubhouse and lovely fields we have today at Downey Park. To mark our 70 years we started of with a light luncheon for our Life Members and other guests. Clubs had stalls and we had a March Past which was won by Arana/Ascot JWHC, a very entertaining day was had by all. Next we had a morning tea attended by Life Members and past players. At least 50 people turned up for a great day with enough food to spread over to lunch. I would like to thank Keith Tidey for making a video of this function, Sharyn Simpson for talking about “modern hockey” and Kym Bell and Meg Brodie for their assistance on the day. Then we held our “Jewels in our Crown” hockey match which featured one 84 year old, 3 players over 70, a few over 60 and the rest made up of youngsters over 50. We had 25 ladies come into the conference room and complain about their aches and pains – plus the length of the uniforms – but they all took the field before the whistle went – had photos taken – and went through streamers and flags onto the field. Many family and friends came out to watch the game. At this point I must thank Lyn Thomas for umpiring for us after a late withdrawal. Lyn’s co-umpire Linda Mauchlan managed the first half and Alyson Aleksic took over the second half – many thanks ladies. Our two coaches Margie Brown for the Pearls and Faye Wastell for the Diamonds sadly had to be admonished by the Technical Director Mary Cockings. Pixie Josiffe and myself were the Managers. The players and the spectators enjoyed an excellent game of hockey. John Bigg had to carry our oldest player onto the field, but it didn’t take long for Anne Yeo to start to play like a young person. The rules were varied encompassing many rules now long gone from our sport, which made for interesting discussion and explanations on the sidelines. The skills displayed from our former International, National, State and Regional players was something to behold – they may have become a bit slower, but the skills remain. The score ended up 1 all, and when all the players came off the field they were laughing and happy and all said “they had the best day ever”. Thank you to Kathy Duggan for giving us lively comments on the game – but you always have to have someone to play up – 2 send offs! – A streaker – fancy running onto a hockey field with no shoes and out of uniform – trust Jenny Tidey! Afterwards the ladies came upstairs and enjoyed afternoon tea and a bit of a talk. Margie Brown managed to have some lovely embroidered polo shirts donated by Greg Maddock of Energex and we thank him very much. They will be a treasured memento of all who participated. One shirt was signed by the players and will be framed and hung in the clubhouse. Thank you to Lisa-Maree Jones, Kym Bell and June Snarski for all their help on the day. UU1133 SSTTAATTEE CCHHAAMMPPIIOONNSSHHIIPP OORRGGAANNIISSIINNGG CCOOMMMMIITTTTEEEE It has been many years since BWHA has hosted a Queensland Championship and I must say it is now easier to organise than in the past, due to the HQ Operations Manual. Having said that there is an enormous amount of work involved in the actual running of such championships. Meetings were held monthly from January to June, the organising committee were Lyn Thomas, Mary Cockings, Jenny Heron, Lisa-Maree Jones, Desley Mackay, Liz Grimes, Joyce Proctor and myself. These ladies were each given a portfolio, from Grounds to Hospitality, and having such efficient women made my job as convenor quite easy and enjoyable. The week started with a welcoming night sausage sizzle to coincide with a Coaches Forum and Managers’ Meeting. Ronda Nix was the representative from HQ and her assistant was Faye Wastell. These ladies don’t know what a mistake is and it was great working along side them again. Day one and the grounds looked a picture, thanks to the BCC, and John Bigg and his many helpers; the weather was also kind to us all week. BWHA organised a March Past prior to the opening ceremony in celebration of our 70th year. Deputy Mayor Maureen Hayes opened the championship and the HQ Official attending was Mr Garry West-Bail. The week went very smoothly due to some 55 volunteers who offered to help, always turning up for their rosters. I think for me, this was the highlight of the championship, it has restored my faith in human nature, THANK YOU doesn’t seem enough. The official closing was as short as we could possibly make it and Janne Ellis was the representative from HQ. Winners were announced, umpires were presented with their badges and the talent identification squads announced.

There are many people to thank for such a successful championship, particularly Kathy Duggan and the BWHA Administration Staff, the many sponsors and donations for sample bags, and the five BWHA U13 teams and officials who conducted themselves admirably. Thank you to HQ for allowing us to host this championship (maybe the last on grass), in our 70th years, we all had a ball and Mary (Treasurer) should have a smile on her face, hopefully the championships was a financial success as well. JJUUNNIIOORR CCHHAAIIRRPPEERRSSOONN’’SS RREEPPOORRTT The 2003 season started off looking pretty poor for Junior Management. With the lack of nominations there was no way we were going to try and get by with only 4 members. We knew we had to get a full committee so with a few emails to clubs we finally got a great response and managed to get members on management. The other problem was, that we never had a Match Secretary. All the members on management added this to their portfolio and we all became Match Secretaries. We decided to go with the times and tried to set all the data up on the computer. Thankfully then a Knight in shining armor came to our rescue and set up a new spreadsheet for all of our data. Thank you to Clinton Hickling who gave up his time for doing this wonderful job for us. Our Saturdays started at 7 am for the Junior Management, and with the help from Louise Alexander who worked in the office, we had many things to do before the games started. Because of the big tasks involved in the Match Secretary’s job some times the day finished at 3 pm. Two of our new Management members Karen Hickling and Libby Roberts put a lot of time into doing this job and I thank them very much for doing a great job. The State Championships started early with the Under 15’s being held at Easter. After strenuous weeks of selections, the teams travelled to Cairns and so did the rain. To our selectors Sue Brough, Pam Patteson, Kelli Robinson - Under 15, Lynn Quirk, Teresa Kuss, Pam Patteson – Under 13, Donna Hobbs, Bev Ragonesi, Lisa Rooney – Under 11 thank you for doing a great job. Pam Patteson had the job as Convenor for Under13 & 15 selectors. Pam did a fantastic job, spending many a long night on the computer with these selections. The under 13 Championships were held at Downey Park. To organise the Championships an Under 13 Championships Committee had to be set up and with Marilyn Chatfield as Championship Convenor. The week was a great success. Thank you to Marilyn and her committee who did such a magnificent job. The Under 11 Southern Cross was also a successful day and I’m sure all the players and parents also had a great day. The organisation of the development for Under 15, 13 & 11 was excellent. Congratulations to Sharyn Simpson and Marg Dilger for all their time and knowledge they put in the Juniors every season. Thank you also to Rhonda Bentley on all her work outfitting our 18 Junior Representative teams. I would like to thank the Administration staff; hockey wouldn’t be able to run without the continuous help from Kathy Duggan, Stacey Williamson and Sue Barsby. To Nerieada and her staff in the canteen, thank you for looking after us during the season. To all the members of the Senior Management thank for your support throughout the year. Thank you to Judy Mewing, Karen Hickling, Pam Patteson, Libby Roberts, Chris O’Sullivan and Jenny O’Sullivan for taking on far more than should be expected of any volunteer. All of these wonderful Ladies hold positions with their respective clubs. As you can see we have a wealth of experience on our Junior Management. Enjoy your break and see you all in the 2004 season. Desley Mackay Chairperson

JJUUNNIIOORR SSEECCRREETTAARRYY’’SS RREEPPOORRTT With Kathy Duggan’s role in Brisbane Women’s Hockey and a very efficient and successful one at that, the position of Junior Secretary has become somewhat nebulous and blurred. It is probably an appropriate time to reconsider and rejig the Junior Management team in respect of roles, task management and job descriptions. In the absence of a designated Match Secretary this year and with the late inclusion (March/April) of some of the committee members, I congratulate all members of Junior Management and our office staff on ‘maintaining’ the season. Libby Roberts and Karen Hickling assumed responsibility for the Match Secretary duties and did a sterling job with help from others. Desley Mackay, our Junior Chairperson, was everywhere and doing everything and one wonders if she ever found her own home! Thank you Desley, on behalf of all involved in Junior Women’s Hockey, on a mammoth effort. I would encourage other members/parents of our hockey community to become involved with BWHA Juniors

45

in some way whether it be on Management, at Downey Park on a Saturday, at Championships, Skills days – wherever help is needed. You only need to ask. You don’t have to be a hockey player yourself, as we all have different skills and ideas to offer. Congratulations to all our players, coaches, umpires, and managers and volunteers this year on yet another enjoyable season of hockey. It is very encouraging to see so many girls involved in sport, and we must always be aware that it should be a positive experience for them in building self esteem, confidence, body and emotional awareness as well as a sense of team and community. Most of all it should be fun, and for them. We all look forward to another great year of hockey for Brisbane Women’s Juniors in 2004, and to much team effort – on and off the field. Judy Mewing Secretary JJUUNNIIOORR TTRREEAASSUURREERR’’SS RREEPPOORRTT 2003 saw a change in the running of the Hockey Shop. Thanks mainly to Mary Cockings, Just Hockey became a major stakeholder in the management of the shop. This involved Just Hockey training and paying a young lady supplied by BWHA to man the shop each Saturday. This has lightened the load on management considerably. BWHA receives a donation annually and also benefits from a percentage of takings on Tournament days. In 2003 this resulted in takings from both the Under11 and under 13 championships held at Downey Park. In addition to this Just Hockey has contributed to our Junior Development by way of merchandise signed by Nikki Hudson. This great package was raffled on championship day. Another great positive is the advantage of not having to keep stock on hand. This is a financial burden the association will not have to sustain. Just Hockey purchased all old stock and this has created a more positive cash flow. Management hopes to continue and improve on this important partnership. The association took little in the way of fines this year, this was due to the fact that we didn’t have a Match Secretary. This will hopefully be rectified in 2004. The monthly council meetings, email and phone reminders worked to help keep clubs abreast of their financial obligations to the association. The prompt payment of these invoices helps to lighten the load on our efficient and often overworked office staff. To those clubs who helped in this manner thankyou and to those who were remiss we look forward to a better 2004. To Kathy, Stacey, Louise and the experienced members on management thanks for your patience in helping the newcomers to management this year. It was a great learning experience and I now appreciate the time and energy it takes to run a successful season of hockey. I wish all a well earned break and look forward to a new season in 2004. Karen Hickling Junior Treasurer

JJUUNNIIOORR CCOOMMPPEETTIITTIIOONNSS This season commenced once again with a colourful display of junior girls representing their respective clubs in the annual march past. Congratulations go to Arana Ascot on winning this year’s March Past. The J1 & J2 divisions had to start earlier this year because of grading games. The teams assembled at the SHC for a full day of grading games. The selectors for the Under 15 Championships also used these games for selection purposes. We were originally going to go with 8 teams in J1 and 8 teams in J2. Due to the difficulty the Fixtures and Grading committee had with the gradings it was decided that we go with 10 teams in J1 and 8 teams in J2. This meant that all J1 games would be played on a Friday night and J2 on a Saturday morning. Thanks to Kathy Duggan who worked hard to get the turf time we needed to fit all these games. We were lucky that only one

game had to be postponed due to wet conditions. This game alone was very hard to reschedule because of lack of turf time available to juniors. The intent again in 2004 will be to have 8 teams in each of the turf divisions, to make scheduling easier for all concerned. Fixtures at ran smoothly with teams competing in: J1 - 10 (Turf) 13A - 9 (DP) 11A - 8 (DP) Intermediate - 8 (RP & F13) J2 - 8 (Turf) 13B - 9 (DP) 11B - 8 (DP) Modified - 25 (Rasey Pk) J3 - 9 (DP) 13C - 10 (DP) 11C - 8 (DP) Minkey - 13 (Rasey Pk)

J4 - 6 (DP) J5 - 6 (DP) Thank you to Pam Nitarski, Bev Ragonesi and Diana Young members of the fixtures and grading committee for the time given to this task. There is one major job involved in the Competitions portfolio – Match Secretary. This positions we found hard to fill. Karen Hickling and Libby Roberts new management members took on the job with the help from Karen’s husband Clinton. They did a wonderful job entering all the data on a new format. This took most of the season to master, so next year it will be a lot easier for the Match Secretary to keep a closer eye on all players, fines and Birth Certificates. Another big job that also goes unnoticed is the Umpires Convenor. Thanks to Kylie Patteson for doing a great job this season. Kylie had a huge task organising umpires to be assessed, umpires exams and also making sure that umpires turned up for their games. Also thanks to Lauren Harten who was on the umpires’ panel who also helped with the assessment of umpires. Thank you to Teresa Kuss and Libby Creevey who organised ball girls for senior games played during the season. A big thank you to Sarah Bowden who performed her tasks as Minkey/Modified Co-ordinator at Rasey Park. Sarah did a marvellous job. Well done. Our numbers grow each year with clubs wanting to nominate more Minkey and Modified teams. This is great to see for our sport. Sally Brough did a marvellous job as our Time Steward at Downey Park. Sally’s job also involved checking to make sure that umpires turned up for their allocated games and liaise with the Umpires Convenor. Thanks Sally. Holly Fitch, Holly and April Parmenter and Pam Nitarski who looked after the tech bench at the SHC and Burringbar. Thanks ladies. Sports trainers are a big necessity of Hockey, without these people we wouldn’t be able to have fixtures. Junior fixtures were played at two different venues on a Friday night. John Thomas and Bruce Oakhill are our sports trainers for these venues. They then have to back up on Saturday with John at Downey Park and Bruce at the SHC. We also have Christopher Kingston-Lee at the Minkey/Modified and Intermediate games at Rasey Park. Then we have Kirily Bowden who was there for us at the Under 15 and Under 13 Championships. As you can see these people are very important to players and us. Thanks guys for all your hard work you put into the season. Thank you to all who were involved in the competitions portfolio without your help we wouldn’t have had the success we had this season. Desley Mackay Competitions Manager

MINKEY & MODIFIED CO-ORDINATORS REPORT Another eventful Minkey and Modified season has come to end. The 2003 season saw an increase in teams for both the Minkey and Modified competition, with a total of 25 Modified teams and 13 Minkey teams. The teams were as follows:

Page 44: THE SEVENTIETH ANNUAL REPORT OF BRISBANE WOMEN’S … · 1 THE SEVENTIETH ANNUAL REPORT OF BRISBANE WOMEN’S HOCKEY ASSOCIATION Inc OFFICE BEARERS FOR 2003 PATRONESS BCC Deputy

47

MINKEY – Arana Ascot, Commercial BLUE, Commercial PURPLE, Easts, Kedron Wavell RED, Norths Chicks, Norths Hatchlings, Pine Hills 1, Pine Hills 2, St Andrews, SWU, Valley BLUE and Valley WHITE. MODIFIED – Arana Ascot, Bulimba, Commercial BLUE, Commercial PURPLE, Easts BLACK, Easts GOLD, Kedron Wavell BLUE, Kedron Wavell RED, Kedron Wavell WHITE, MBC Bees, MBC Bugs, Norths BLUE, Norths RED, Norths YELLOW, Pine Rivers, Redcliffe, South Brisbane Eagles, St Andrews, SWU Magicians, SWU Sorcerers, SWU Unicorns, SWU Wizards, Valley BLUE, Valley RED and Valley WHITE. As you can see, there were some creative team names this year! At the beginning of the season, the Minkey competition had an extra team which meant a fourth timeslot had to be added, and existing timeslots had to be changed. Early in the season however, a team withdrew, giving both competitions a BYE each week. Nonetheless, the games remained at the new times of 8:15am, 9:10am and 10:05am. Hopefully, this did not cause too many problems! The Minkey and Modified Guides Day was held at Downey Park on Saturday 29th March. As always, all team coaches were encouraged to attend. The first games were held on the 5th April at Rasey Park. Instead of the usual Minkey and Modified Open Day, the girls were encouraged to participate in the BWHA 70th Anniversary celebrations at Downey Park on this day, which included a March Past for all players. The season ran without too much disruption but the end of season Skills Day, scheduled for Saturday 16th August, was not as lucky. Unfortunately this day was cancelled due to rain. Clubs were then asked to test their players on the required skills during club training. We presented the ribbons to the girls the following week at Downey Park and each player enjoyed a sausage sizzle, and other goodies afterwards. It was not the ideal end to the season but hopefully it was still enjoyed by all. Once again, enormous thanks must go to BWHA Junior Management for all their help, particularly to Marg, Desley, Kathy and Stacey for putting up with me. My job was made easier by the assistance of club volunteers; especially those who helped put out and stack the goal nets each week. Thank you to all the people who helped with this mammoth job. Finally I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and New Year. I sincerely hope that all the girls had fun, which is our ultimate goal. I look forward to seeing everyone next year and encourage them to bring their sisters also! Sarah Bowden Minkey and Modified Co-Ordinator

JJUUNNIIOORR UUMMPPIIRREESS RREEPPOORRTT This year there were around 25 people going for their junior umpiring badge. With the terrific help of Lauren Harten, almost all these people were able to be tested three times, which I believe was sufficient to gain an acceptable understanding of how these umpires went about their duty. Unfortunately not everyone gained their junior badge, but was encouraged to try again next year. I found myself worried that I might have had too high an expectation and this resulted in less than 10 actually gaining their badge. I feel that for future reference to the umpiring convenor there should be a set level of competence that an umpire must obtain in order to receive a junior badge, this in turn will assist the junior umpiring convenor and helpers in having a criteria to follow in the allocation of badges. As well, to stop disappointment and the feeling of not wanting to umpire, for those who did not receive their badge an umpire feedback form (similar to a state championship) should be made available to all umpires so they can see the areas of strength as well as weakness. Due to the high number of umpires being tested there was often more than two umpires being tested per timeslot, this meant that Lauren and myself were very busy at times, and often umpires would not arrive but send someone else or change fields. This happened a number of times this year and I found myself frustrated by either the lack of commitment these umpires were showing or let down in communication of the club. At the start of the year every umpire that nominates to be tested should be made aware of failure to show without notice, will result in automatic removal from the testing list for the year, unless the convenor or Brisbane were notified or there was a suitable reason.

I did plan this year to have an umpire (Division 1 standard) to come out to Downey and take a seminar which would be made compulsory to all junior umpires that are being tested however time got the better of me and unfortunately I was unable to organise that during my busy university schedule. For those that did not receive their junior badge this year they received an encouragement certificate, this seemed to be successful as the umpires did not walk away with nothing for all the effort and hard work they put in over the year. The junior umpiring exam went well, however there was a lot of confusion as to who was actually sitting the exam. The test room was open for 5 hours this was a significant time frame for all players to sit the exam. I appreciated the help of the clubs in marking the exams and hope that next year the support in that busy period continues. In conclusion it was an enjoyable year and the enthusiasm and energy displayed by Brisbane junior umpires is something to be proud of. Kylie Patteson Umpires Convenor

DDEEVVEELLOOPPMMEENNTT UU1133 && UU1155 SSEELLEECCTTIIOONN && DDEEVVEELLOOPPMMEENNTT Under 13 and Under 15 Brisbane Women’s Junior Selection process began with a development program, followed by trial games. Under 13’s were well represented as the championships were in Brisbane. Under 15’s surprisingly were not as low as I had thought due to the expensive journey. The selection format commenced, for under 13’s for 2003, seeing coaching staff put the girls through a variety of basic skills. From this, the selectors identified weakness and strengths. Again this year it was obvious that the overall level of basic skills was as disappointing as last year. Once again it was unfortunate that the selectors were unable to have too much opportunity to see the players in their own club games. Assessment and elimination continued to be part of the selection process during the coming weeks, and with consultation with Sharyn Simpson and Marg Dilger along the way, were able to finalise the teams for Southern Cross and then State Championships. I felt our process of trial games this year was beneficial. Once identifying the level of the player from development, we grouped the players into levels and started trials from the lower level. From there we selected and promoted players to the next level and so on. There were some crucial changes made from the Southern Cross in Toowoomba due to the fact that on the day the girls who we originally thought would perform, did not. I have submitted some points for recommendation to BWHA and with some discussions should be able to put an improved method of selection into place.

The selection format commenced, for under 15’s for 2003, seeing coaching staff put the girls through a variety of basic skills. From this, the selectors identified weakness and strengths. Again it was unfortunate, in the fact that the grass season had not yet commenced; it did not allow us to have a look at them in their own club games. As the Brisbane 2 & 3 were to be played mostly on grass it was a distinct disadvantage to the grass players that we did not see them enough on the surface that they would be mostly playing. Assessment and Elimination continued to be part of the selection process during the coming weeks, and with consultation with Sharyn Simpson along the way, were able to finalise the teams for Southern Cross and then State Championships. 2003 saw an increase in the number of nominations for the Development Program and for Southern Cross nominations. With nominations nearing the 150 mark, the three selectors – Bev Ragonesi, Lisa Rooney and Donna Hobbs – would have a hard time selecting the teams. Development was run over a 3 week period and to all those coaches and parents who contributed to the smooth running, a huge thank-you. These coaching sessions are important in the skill development of young players. They offer not only our young players a chance to learn different skills, but should be seen as an opportunity for our young coaches to develop their coaching skills as well. This year 4 teams were selected and coaches and some assistant coaches appointed. The teams trained for 3 weeks before the Southern Cross day and no doubt were taught an enormous amount of skills and tricks of the game by their coaches. The results of the Southern Cross day are below. The day itself was a huge success with children and parents enjoying the occasion. Hopefully new friendships were formed and old acquaintances renewed. As always, the development department is looking at ways to improve the program, so should you have any ideas in this area, please pass them on. Thank-you to the 3 selectors, whose time and energy is valuable but without them these teams would not be selected.

BBAALLLL PPEERRSSOONN SSTTEEWWAARRDD RREEPPOORRTT In comparison to previous seasons, 2003 was a quiet year for our Ball Attendants. They were required to attend at the following events:-

• Southern Cross League

• National Women’s Hockey League

• Premier League

• President’s Cup

This season the girls experienced some extremes in weather conditions. They have hats and sunscreen for the sun, raincoats for the rain but only their shorts and t-shirts for the cold. Libby and I really felt for them on that cold Monday in May during the Premier League. They were freezing their little butts off in their navy shorts. Membership of the Ball Attendants Club at the moment is quite low and the current group of girls (with the exception of a couple) have now been attending for the last three years. We will need to increase membership in 2004 as my concern is that if this group of girls decide to finish up we may be left like the “Hockeyroos” after the 2000 Olympics. It would be ideal to have more club juniors involved in this rewarding and fun experience. At the moment all the Ball Attendants come from only three (3) clubs. The girls (along with the Ball Person Steward) really do have the best view in the house and they get to mix with top representative players.

A special thank you to Mary Cockings and Lyn Thomas on the Technical Bench who are always concerned for the welfare of the ball girls especially when the weather turns bad.
