Yesterday, for the third time, I offered the invocation to begin the Maryland State Senate session. I adapted some of my invocation from a re- cent ‘Prayer for Our Country’, written by Rab- bi Shmuly Yanklowitz. Here’s the text of my prayer: Eternal, source of life, source of compassion, please give us courage at this critical junc- ture. Please continue to give our state sena- tors strength, patience, and compassion. We pray that the vision of the prophets of old—the redemptive power of justice; relief for the poor, welcome for the marginal, protection for the op- pressed, care for the sick—and the vision of a land of opportunity should be brought about. May our elected officials help to lead the way toward kindness, justice, and harmony. May they lead us safely away from the pits of hatred and cruelty, xenophobia, homophobia and bigotry, pits of hatred which are seething with growing power at this time. We pray that the powerful should not harm the innocent. We pray that any policies that are meant to harm the vulnerable in prioritization of the pow- erful and privileged will be quashed. Should there be plans that will merely benefit the most privileged among us, but not all of humankind and the planet we call home, may they fail. Grant us the strength to demonstrate spiritual resistance, to imbue our sinews with the highest integrity. Give us the wisdom and courage to do what’s right to protect the most powerless and defenseless in society. May agents of hate who stray from Your holy vision of love and justice, found within and outside our country, be averted. May all of Your creations be handled mercifully. May all to whom You have given the sanctity of life awaken and fulfill their calling to bring love, justice, and kindness to all cor- ners of Your world. May our land, and our Maryland State Senate, strive to be a blessing for all. Amen. Thank you, Oseh Shalom friends, for allowing me the privilege to represent us in public over the years. The Shalom

Rabbi Heifetz’s Monthly Word Dear Friends, Over the years, I’ve had the honor of repre-senting Oseh Shalom and the Jewish commu-nity in many public settings. Yesterday, for the third time, I offered the invocation to begin the Maryland State Senate session. I adapted some of my invocation from a re-cent ‘Prayer for Our Country’, written by Rab-bi Shmuly Yanklowitz. Here’s the text of my prayer: Eternal, source of life, source of compassion, please give us courage at this critical junc-ture. Please continue to give our state sena-tors strength, patience, and compassion.

We pray that the vision of the prophets of old—the redemptive power of justice; relief for the poor, welcome for the marginal, protection for the op-pressed, care for the sick—and the vision of a land of opportunity should be brought about. We pray that any policies that are meant to harm the vulnerable in prioritization of the pow-erful and privileged will be quashed. May our land, and our Maryland State Senate, strive to be a blessing for all. Amen. Thank you, Oseh Shalom friends, for allowing me the privilege to represent us in public over the years. From the Executive Director Welcome to the April issue of the Shalom. First of all, I want to wish everyone a Zissen (Sweet) Pesah. A great deal has happened in the past six weeks. In February when the national news featured the story of a St. Louis Jewish cemetery's having 200 head-stones toppled, we were in the midst of completing the installa-tion of our new security camer-

as. Why I mention this is that I know that cemetery. I’m from St. Louis and that cemetery has an annex about 15 miles away, where my grandparents are bur-ied. I’ve driven past the Chesed Shel Emeth Cemetery countless times. My parents also live about five miles away from there. That cemetery is in the heart of the old Jewish com-munity in University City in St. Louis County. The area is known for being the home of Washington Universi-ty, and for decades the majority of the city’s syna-gogues were located there, including the one I grew up in before it moved out to the growing suburbs in the 1970s, following the migration of younger Jewish families. I’m sure there are many Jewish communities in midsize cities across the United States with similar his-tories, which have faced plenty of anti-Semitism acts. Perhaps that’s another reason increasing our congre-gation’s security has been something I’ve been fo-cused on since I started working at Oseh in 2010. While I was hearing the news from St. Louis first by my childhood friends back in Missouri, then on the na-tional news, Oseh Shalom was making news of our own in a good way. We had imams, pastors, rever-ends, priests, and rabbi and cantor gathered here on February 22nd to rewrite the faded letters in our old-est Torah. We brought back to life the “Burning Bush” in Exodus. But this project hasn’t stopped there. On March 5th our Religious School children wrote in the Torah, as did 4th, 5th, and 6th graders from Columbia Jewish Center (CJC) Religious School. At Purim Palooza later that same day our scribe, Jeffrey Shulevitz, trained parents and children in how to write letters in a Torah scroll and invited prospective members to write a let-ter in our Torah (with the compliments of one of our project donors) on Sunday, March 26th, when they were also offered the opportunity to have a tour of Oseh Shalom and learn more about us. The 26th was also our Interfaith Family and Friends Torah Project Day – and for both the February 22nd and March 26th project days we garnered a great deal of publici-

    Continued on back cover

Springtime is a vibrant and energizing season, re-flected in all of the goings-on here at Oseh Sha-lom.

I recently had the opportunity to witness a re-markable event that, for me, represents what our community stands for. Our Executive Director, Barry Nove, created an innovative and inspired program with our Torah Repair project. Interfaith leaders from around the region joined us for a class and an opportunity to help with the repair. Local imams, rabbis, priests, and pastors came together for a morning with our scribe, Jeffrey Shulevitz. The level of reverence of these leaders, gathered around our Torah table, was intense and the emotion palpable. Several of the leaders spoke to me afterward and said how honored they felt, that their hands were shaking, that they had tears in their eyes. Coming at what seems like a time marked by division and discord, the unity seemed particularly meaningful. I know some of my faith for the future was restored that morning. My heartfelt thanks to Barry for, as usu-al, his groundbreaking ideas and to Jeffrey for his flawless execution.

We will continue to have more opportunities for the Torah Repair project, but it ends early in May. Please take advantage if you can.

    For the next few weeks:

Passover is coming up with its combination of the commemoration of emancipation and marathon cooking. If anyone else has vegan children, I would be happy to share my ge-faux-te fish reci-pe. I also have a recipe for matzoh balls without eggs, but they’re like cannonballs.

We will be continuing to honor Rabbi Doug with fun and informal events for the next several months. Stay tuned!

Finally, we will be celebrating Earth Day with a B’Yachad on April 22.

As always, Andy and I are available for questions, comments, concerns. Happy Spring!

    Allison

    Shalom everyone,

Our religious school got to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience with our sofer, Jeffrey Shulevitz. Oseh Shalom’s Religious school and the Columbia Jewish Congregation’s Religious School joined together to help raise money and repair Oseh’s oldest Torah.

Throughout February students at Oseh raised tzedakah and participated in workshops. They learned how to repair scroll pages using special erasers, sand paper and glycerin. They also learned the art of writing Hebrew calligraphy.

On March 5, students from CJC travelled to Oseh for a special Sunday school class. They participat-ed in a torah repair workshop, and then all stu-dents from both congregations got a chance to help rewrite a letter in the Torah. Students under the age of 13 held onto Jeffrey’s hand as they wrote the letter together. Students over 13, who are considered religious adults in Judaism, had the opportunity to write the letter on their own. Jeffrey watched carefully and helped repair any mistakes.

Jeffrey’s enthusiasm filled the room as students cheered each other on while completing this tre-mendous mitzvah. Our youngest scribe of the morning was 3 year old Carolina Sarantos. Our eldest were teachers who were grandparents themselves.

    Rabbi Search Update

The Rabbinical Search Committee is now working with ten applicants and has continued to meet on a weekly basis to evaluate them. They are scheduled to do telephone interviews with six candidates this week, and three more the following week. Once telephone interviews have been completed and as-sessed by the committee, a pool of the top candidates will be invited to Oseh for a more in-depth, in-person interview. The committee has been pleased to note how diverse the ten applicants are—four are female, six are male, and they range in age from being in their 20s to being in their 60s. Nine of the ten applicants are graduates of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College (RRC), and almost all of them currently work and reside outside of Maryland.

Brad Sachs and Jean Silver-Isenstadt met with a focus group of teen students from the religious school this past Sunday to solicit their thoughts and preferences regarding our next Rabbi.

As always, feel free to remain in touch with the Committee chairs at any point with your questions, ideas, and comments.

THANK YOU WINTER SHELTER VOLUNTEERS AND DONORS On behalf of Judy Swanner, Rebecca Goldfinger, and Eileen Hollander, we would like to ex-press our sincere thanks to all who helped our Winter Shelter guests feel warm and welcomed this winter at Oseh Shalom. During our women’s week we had 5-7 guests, and during our men’s week we provided shel-ter to about 25 guests per night. We had wonderful weeks with them! Our guests could not have been nicer or more appreciative. They seemed to enjoy being at Oseh Shalom, and, more im-portantly, they seemed to be able to rest and relax after their tiring days. Thank you to our cooks who prepared delicious dinners for our guests, and to all our volunteers and donors who gave of their time, resources and companionship so generously. We thank you once again for opening your hearts and “your home” to our guests.

Oseh Shalom is a vibrant, inclusive Reconstructionist synagogue, with members throughout the Baltimore-Washington area, dedicated to providing a supportive community for celebrating

Jewish life through prayer, learning and social action.

ty on how inclusive our congregation really is. We’ve four more project days scheduled, beginning later this month. For all those who have help us bring our oldest and first scroll back to life and to those who helped us honor Rabbi Doug on Saturday evening, March 25, at our Toast and Roast celebration and con-cert, thank you. You’ve helped us make history, while helping us honor Rabbi Doug for his part in our illustrious accomplishments over the years. A special gift is still to be presented to Rabbi Doug and his family. We are still accepting donations toward our dedication of the last book of the Torah in his and their honor. Rabbi Doug and his family will be the last people to rewrite the faded letters of our scroll in early May. On May 13th the scroll will be used for the first time in at least two decades at the Adult Bnei Mitzvah that Rabbi Doug is conducting. All gifts (regardless of amount) will be acknowledged to Rabbi Doug and his family. Before concluding, I would like to thank all those who have helped in the office: Mona Davis, Doris Kirschbaum, Mariyan Kolev, Pauline Pivowar, and Shelly Sypes.
