Did you know a bill
can become a law? If not
than listen up. The three
branches are legislative,
judicial, and executive. The
legislative branch makes the
laws. To make a law a citi-
zen must develop an idea
for a bill. The citizens bring
the idea to the legislative
branch. Members of the
General Assembly or the
State Senate propose the
bill. The General Assembly
vote to approve the bill.
Then the bill goes to the
governor. The governor
signs the bill or the gover-
nor vetoes the bill. Vetoes
means to reject. If the bill is
vetoed, another vote can
be taken. If 27 Senators and
54 General Assembly mem-
bers vote to approve it, the
bill becomes a law. Would

Layers of the Earth
P A G E 3 V O L U M E 1 , I S S U E 1
Scientists study
earthquakes to learn more
about the Earth. An earth-
quake is a movement or vi-
bration caused by the release
of stored energy in the crust.
A seismograph is an instru-
ment used by scientists to
record how strong or how
weak an earthquake is.
There are four
layers in the
Earth the crust,
mantle, inner
core, and the
outer core.
The
crust is the
Earth’s outer most layers,
and we live on it. The crust is
also the thinnest layer, and it
is a solid rock. In this layer it
is deeper under continents
than oceans.
The next layer is the
mantle. The mantle is a layer
of rock lying below the crust,
and it is the thickest layer.
The mantle allows tectonic
plates to slowly move, and
rocks move or flow due to
pressure and high tempera-
tures.
There is one last
layer, the core. The core is
dived into two parts the outer
core and the inner core. The
outer core is totally liquid.
The liquid is melted iron.
The inner core is a solid
sphere. The inner core spins
at a different rate then the
rest of the plants. Scientists
still study earthquakes.

The judicial branch is
another one of the three
branches. Leading the judicial
branch of the government is the
Supreme Court. The Supreme
Court has nine judges known
as justice. The Supreme Court
justice holds their positions for
life. The Supreme Court is the
most powerful court in the
United States. It is their job to
make sure that the laws of the
United States agree with the
constitution.
The executive branch
is the last branch. The execu-
tive branch has to do with en-
forcing the laws, and congress
makes and up holds the consti-
tution. The executive branch is
responsible for printing money,
and making sure the food we
buy at our supermarket is safe.

Our government is
made of three branches. The
three branches are legislative,
judicial, and executive. The
legislative has to do with law-
making and taxes. The judicial
helps preserve the system of
checks and balances. The ex-
ecutive branch has to do with
enforcing the laws.
The legislative branch
is one of the three branches.
The congress is split into two
groups or houses. The first
house is called Senate. The
second house is called Repre-
sentative. The legislative
branch has to do with lawmak-
ing. This branch makes laws
and collects taxes, and it can
declare war. The congress must
work with the other two
branches of government to do
its job. Senators and Represen-
tative of the legislative branch
are elected by the citizens of
large that it is divided into de-
partments. The president is
only the lead of the executive
branch.
There is also checks
and balances which is when
one branch watches over an-
other branch. When the presi-
dent from the executive branch
names certain people for im-
portant jobs, the senate from
the legislative branch approves
or rejects those people. The
legislative branch makes the
laws, but the judicial branch
can keep the law from moving
forward. One part of the legis-
lative branch chooses judges in
the judicial branch, it can stop
the president veto. The presi-
dent acts as the head of all
these branches but he is really
not.

A New Dance Season In 2007 I had
my first dance class ever. My dance teachers name was Mrs. Mandy. I was two years old and I went to Jazz Unlimited. The styles I did were ballet and tap. I
liked ballet better than tap because ballet doesn’t make much noise and it takes more work. I had many dif-ferent feelings about dance. I was nervous, determined, and ex-cited. All these feelings were real! I was nervous be-cause I thought I would walk into the wrong
classroom or forget my teacher’s name. I also didn’t have any friends in my dance class. I was determined that I would get through the dance class, and I would like dance and keep doing dance. I was also excited be-cause I knew I would like dance. At my house I would always dance around. I was excited because the reviews of my teacher were amazing. I know this would be a great dance year! The most chal-
lenging thing at dance

The Earth, Sun, and Moon
P A G E 5 V O L U M E 1 , I S S U E 1
Did you know that the Earth, Sun, and Moon are part of our so-lar system? The Earth rotates or spins every 24 hours and that causes day and night. The Earth also revolves, Revolves means to go
around a object once. It takes one year or 365 ¼ days to go around the sun once. The Earth is tilted on its axis at a 23.5 degree angle, and that causes the sea-sons: Summer, Winter, Spring, and Fall. The Earth travels on an el-lipse shaped orbit around the sun.
The moon is Earths nearest neighbor. The moon also rotates and re-volves around the Earth, and that causes the
Phases of the moon. The gravity from the Earth keeps the moon close to Earth. The sun is the
center of our solar sys-
tem, and it produces
heat and light energy.
The sun is a hot body of
gas, and it is a star.
Every day you can look
in the sky and know
what’s happening be-
tween the Earth, Sun,
and Moon.
One of the three
states of matter is a solid. A
solid has a definite shape
and takes up a definite
amount of space. Solids are
made of particles. The par-
ticles are packed tightly.
They also vibrate. Exam-
ples of a solid are a block
or book.
Also a liquid is one
of the three states of matter.
A liquid doesn’t have a
definite shape it takes the
shape of a container. The
liquid has a fixed or defi-
nite amount. Also like the
solid the liquid is made of
particles. The particles
move more than they do
than a solid but still move
slowly. Some examples are
milk or juice.
The last state of
matter is gas. Gas doesn’t
have a definite shape it
takes the shape of anything.
It doesn’t have a definite a
definite amount of space.
Gas is made of particles.
The particles move freely
and move very free. Some
examples of a gas are
helium, neon, and oxy-
gen. All the states of
matter are really interest-
ing.
Do you know the
states of matter? Matter is
anything that takes up space
and has mass. There are three
states of matter solid, liquid,
and gas. A property is char-
acteristic of something that
you can observe. The differ-
ent types of properties are
color, texture, shape, hard-
ness, and buoyancy. Buoy-
ancy is the upward force of
water, another liquid, of air
that keeps things a float.
Mass is the amount making
up an object. Mass is meas-
ured in units called kilograms
or grams. An instrument
called a Balance-Pan is used
to measure mass.

One Country Five Regions The U.S is so
big that it is split into
five regions! The five
regions are the North-

– West. A region is a
place that has common
features that separate it
from other areas. Land-
forms and climate also
sets them apart from
other regions. Exam-
ples of landforms are
mountains, plains, and
hills. Climate is a pat-
tern of weather over
many years. Climate
plays a big role in our
lives.
New Jersey is
in the Northeast region.
The Northeast region
experiences all four
seasons’ winter, spring,
summer, and fall. The
Northeast has the
Coastal Plains which is
a flat low land along
the edge of the Atlantic
Ocean. The Appala-
chian Mountains is the
oldest mountain in the
world and is in almost
all of the
states in
the North-
east. Yet
today the
Appala-
chian are
not very
high. Gla-
ciers
helped shape the land
of the Northeast. The
Northeast is split into
the New England
States and the Middle
Atlantic States. There
are 11 states in the
Northeast. The first
Native Americans to
come to the Northeast
were farmers.
If you travel
south of the Northeast
you will reach the
Southeast. It is warm
all year in the South-
east because this region
is close to the equator.
The Southeast is criss-
crossed with rivers it
also has the largest ar-
eas of the swamps,
wetlands, bayous,
marshes, and bays
cover the Southeast.
For an example the Ev-
erglades are found in
the southeast. The
Davis Bayou is in the
Southeast. The Davis
Bayou – is a slow mov-
ing stream. Most of the
Southeast region has
the coastal plains.
When most settlers
came they ran into wa-
terfalls. There are 12
states in the Southeast.
The Southeast is a very
interesting region!
In the Middle
of the United States is
the Middle -West. The
Middle West produces
corn and wheat. In this
region it is made up of
the Interior Plain. The
Great Plains is in the
Mid-West. It has cold
winters, hot summer.
The Mid-West also has
the Central Plains is in
the east, it has low ele-
vation, and it produces
corn. Europeans came
for jobs when the Mid-
dle West was being
developed. The Mid-
West was growing very
fast.
The Southwest
shares the Great Plains
with the Mid-West.
The Southwest is
mostly made up of
high plateaus, plains,
and deserts. The Rocky
Mountains appear in
this region as well as
the West. One of the
most famous landforms
in this region is the
Grand Canyon. People
in the Southwest hope
to be rich. The South-
west is infused by dif-
ferent groups living
there. There are ancient
drawings in the South-
west.

Marvelous Migration
P A G E 9 V O L U M E 1 , I S S U E 1
Do you know how
Caribou, Bats, and Monarch
Butterflies migrate? Migration
is when animals travel from
one place to another. Animals
migrate because they are
searching for food in a warmer
climate.
Caribou are one of the
animals that migrate. They are
mammals. Male and female
caribou have antlers, they are
known as reindeer. Caribou
males are three to five feet
long, and way up to 600
pounds! WOW that’s a lot!
About 500,000 caribou live in
a herd. Caribou migrate for
food. Caribou live in the Taiga
or the evergreen forest until
the end of winter. They live in
the Tundra during spring and
summer. Caribou migrate for
food. In winter they eat lichen
and in summer they eat flower
buds and grass.
Caribou have preda-
tors. Some predators are mos-
quitoes. Mosquitoes are preda-
tors of the caribou because
they take a quart of blood
weekly. This makes the cari-
bou slower and weaker. To
avoid mosquitoes they find a
breeze, wade in water, and
stand close together. The mos-
quitoes die out in August.
Bats are mammals that fly. Bats have different
body parts than
humans. There
body parts are
hands, feet, web
like skin for
wings, and their
fingers to help the
fly in different
directions. Bats hang upside
down. They spend time
grooming there selves. How
they do that: hold on to branch
with one foot and use other
foot to clean themselves.
Mexican-free tailed
bats are a type of bats that mi-
grate. They fly south to Mex-
ico in the spring, and move
back to Texas when spring
ends. Mexican-free tailed bats
have newborns. The females
go to nursing caves to give
birth. The newborns live there.
That’s where the mothers care
for the newborns.
Some other bats are
Silver-haired bats, Hoary bats,
and Red bats. In spring they
live in northern United States
and Canada. Silver-haired bats
live in southern United States
during winter. Hoary bats and
Red bats live in Central Amer-
ica during winter.
Creatures of the Night
are another type of bats. Bats
are nocturnal. Nocturnal
means they sleep during the
day and are an awake at night.
This lets bats live longer be-
cause predators sleep at night.
Bats live from 10 to 20 years.
Creatures of the Night
are another type of bats. Crea-
tures of the Night hunt. They
use sound waves to find their
food and to not bounce into things. First, they make a
noise. Then when the sound
hits the object it bounces back
to the Creatures of the Night
and tells them the location.
Monarch butterflies
are not mammals like caribou
and bats. They are insects.
They also migrate. In the late
summer they began their win-
ter migration. They migrate to
coast of California or Mexico.
Monarch Butterflies eat nectar
on the way. They also gain
weight during the trip, but they
still don’t stop for long. They
don’t stop for long because
they don’t want to get cold.
Monarch butterflies can’t fly if
they get cold. Monarch butter-
flies travel far. They fly two
thousand miles each fall and
spring. They fly over lagoons
and large sections of the Gulf
of Mexico. Monarch butter-
flies fly to the same place each
winter and fall to the same
place each winter. The crea-
tures that fly south live north.
Monarch butterflies
give birth in March. They find
mates and go north in March.
The females lay 100 eggs each
year. They look for milkweed
plants to lay eggs, and then
they hatch into caterpillars.
Caterpillars come
from butterflies. Caterpillars
eat milkweed and create co-
coons. Two weeks
later there butter-
flies. Migration is
what a lot of ani-
mals do it helps
them live during the
winter.

Teddy Roosevelt set the
