The Shire of Leonora is now the proud owner of an Ed Seiler upright piano which was
kindly donated by Mary-Anne Kenworthy.
Ed Seiler is a name synonymous with grand and upright pianos.
Eduard Seiler, the company’s founder, began making pianos in 1849 in Leignitz, which was
then a part of Prussia. By 1923 the company was producing up to 3,000 pianos per year
and was the largest piano manufacturer in Eastern Europe.
The piano originally was in a hotel in Leonora and came out from Fremantle in the late
1880s on the back of a camel. Locals remember the piano being in the Central Hotel.
If anyone could enlighten us with information on the history of the piano while it was in
Leonora, please call into the Shire Office, we would love to hear from you.
As you can see in the photograph, it now takes pride of place in the Shire of
Leonora’s Information Centre. Once the Leonora Museum is established
it will be moved to that location close by.

Meet Debbie Bustard, She is the new Case Coordinator for
Centrecare.
How long have you lived in
Leonora for?
I have lived in Leonora for
nearly 2 months now.
WHERE DID YOU GROW UP
AND WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO
LEONORA
I was born and raised in rural New
Zealand. My family were dairy
farmers, so life growing up pretty
much revolved around the farm. In
2016 I started working for
Kalgoorlie Centrecare in the
Reintergration Team, a role I
absolutely loved. The
Reintegration Team covers the
Goldfields, Esperance, Tjuntjun-
jtara, Northern Corridor and
Ngaayatjarra Lands which has
been an amazing privilege. I am
excited to now have the opportuni-
ty to work and live in Leonora, to
return to working with children,
young people and families.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE
MEMORY OF LEONORA SO
FAR
I think my favourite memory was
my introduction to Leonora, it was
the 2016 Golden Gift weekend. I
thought the concept and
community spirit was amazing
despite the rain.
LEAST FAVOURITE MEMORY
It could have been starting my new
role amid the COVID-19 pandemic,
however there have been many
unforeseen blessings too. Officially
no least favourite memory as yet.
TELL ME A BIT ABOUT YOUR
FAMILY
I have 4 grown children aged 18 - 27
years. We lived in the Wheatbelt for
a few years so WA was home to the
children. They completed school in
New Zealand, went travelling and
eventually ended back in WA. My
parents have also lived alternatively
between New Zealand and Leonora
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE YOU
WOULD LIKE TO SHARE
Be kind to yourself and to others.
Practice gratitude, studies show that
finding things to be thankful for each
day improve our emotional, mental
and physical wellbeing. It can lower
our blood pressure, regulate our
moods and change our behavior -
there are countless benefits,
ultimately proven to make us happier
and kinder which brings me full circle.
Leonora Police would like to
remind members of the community
the use of unregistered quad bikes/
motorbikes on roads is an offence.
We will be conducting a blitz in the
coming weeks, targeting the use of
these vehicles on the road.
Offenders will be prosecuted and
have these vehicles seized.
In other news, we have three new
staff members at the station.
Chris Stasev arrived recently and
is a veteran with the WA Police
with over 30 years experience.
He joins us from the Liquor En-
forcement Unit and recently spent
a number of years at the Sex Of-
fender Management Squad. In his
spare time, Chris enjoys exercising
and is a Hawthorn supporter (we
wont hold that against him!)
Trudie Dwyer and Steve Jarvis
arrived last week from Perth.
Trudie was born in Leonora and
spent her childhood in the
northern goldfields. Steve is
originally from Texas, but has
called Australia home for a number
of years. Trudie is a West Coast
Eagles supporter and has been
busy educating Steve on the finer
points of the game.
These officers look forward to
becoming involved in our
community - if you see them
around, be sure to say hi!

Families First Program is an early intervention program which aims to
Improve the wellbeing of children and young people showing early signs
of or at risk of developing mental illness. A big part of the program is also
working with communities to improve engagement between families and
local support services and institutions. As well as working with children
and young people the service provides support for their families and
carers. Working together to identify and develop support to address risk
factors impacting on their lives. The Families First Program outreaches to
a number of communities in the Northern Corridor of the Goldfields
including Leonora, Laverton, Wiluna and to the Ngaanyatjarra and
Tujuntjuntjara Lands. We also have counsellors and caseworkers for the
financial counselling, family and domestic violence and the integrated
primary mental health programs which travel regularly to Leonora and
Laverton to visit clients. During the Covid-19 crisis, Centrecare has
been offering services by phone or videoconferencing. For more

With the combination of the current COVID-19 pandemic and the influenza season on the horizon, there really has nev-er been a better time to quit smoking.
We know that smoking can put you at greater risk of getting chest infections and influenza, and emerging evidence suggests that smoking can be a significant risk factor for more severe symptoms of COVID-19. Studies have suggested that if you contract COVID-19 and you smoke, you are up to two and half times more likely to be admitted to an intensive care ward or require life support. This is largely because COVID-19 affects our lungs.
If you smoke, blood flow to your lungs and the transfer of oxygen to your blood is compromised. Your lungs may be already damaged, or you may already have reduced lung capacity caused by years, or even decades of smoking. This makes it harder for your lungs to fight COVID-19.
There is also evidence that if you have other health conditions like cardiovascular disease and cancer, you are more likely to experience severe complications of COVID-19, and smoking can increase the risk of many of these conditions.
The hand-to-mouth action of smoking, and even e-cigarette use, means that smoking makes you more vulnerable to COVID-19, as you are touching your face and mouth more often. The risk of spreading COVID-19 can also be increased if you share any type of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, shisha or water-pipes.
Now is the time to give your lungs the best chance of beating viruses like COVID-19. Your body begins to repair itself the moment you quit smoking. Within days of quitting smoking, your lungs begin to heal so they become better at re-moving mucus from your airways. In weeks your immune system starts to recover, ensuring your body is better posi-tioned to fight off infection. All of which increases your odds of preventing, and recovering from illnesses like COVID-19.
Right now, there are reasons to stop smoking all around us. Concerns for your health, or for a friend, or a family member's health, are all major motivators to quit.
We are spending more time at home with our loved ones than ever, making quitting and not smoking around them even more important than before. Having access to your immediate family can also provide greater support to quit.
Stopping smoking at any time represents a huge opportunity for your health and wellbeing, adding up to a decade, or more, to your life. And there are a variety of services and supports available to make quitting easier.
Newly expanded Telehealth services, where you do not need to physically visit a medical practice, provide an opportunity for you to safely discuss quitting options over the phone with your GP. Your pharmacist can also provide advice on which stop smoking medications to use, or you can speak to an Aboriginal Health Worker for quit support.
The Quitline (13 7848) is open and ready to support you to quit, providing personalised, non-judgmental and empathetic support as well as information on the types of stop smoking medications available. You can talk to them over the phone or online. An Aboriginal counsellor is available to speak to you upon request.
Quitting smoking has the potential to be life-changing, now more than ever. If you smoke, we urge you to use this time as incentive to stop once and for all.
There has never been a better time to quit smoking.
