The Shone Family of Buckley, Flintshire

Lily Shone was my (Peter Kelsall’s) grandmother, my mother’s mother. Our Shones are a

Buckley area family that can be traced back to the 1500’s in the Hawarden parish

registers. Our direct line traces back from Lily through:

Lily (1879 – 1971) and John Iredale (1881 – 1957)

William (1845 – 1925 and Frances (Fanny) Peters (1848 – 1916)

Samuel (1817 – 1897) and Esther Bloor (1821 – 1899)

William (1789 – 1864) and Charlotte Peers (1785 – 1835)

Thomas (1766) and Mary Parry (1760 – 1806)

The Shone line may trace further to John (c. 1740) and Esther, and William and Ann

Read married in Hawarden in 1734 – but this is not proven.

Esther Bloor was born in Hanley, Staffordshire; otherwise the whole Shone line traces

back to at least the 1700s in Hawarden Parish, many in the Pentrobin township (mostly

part of present-day Buckley). St. Mathew’s Church Buckley was dedicated in 1822.

Lily Shone My maternal grandmother Lily Shone was born in Buckley 25 October 1879, the 7th child

of William Shone and Fanny Peters.

In 1881 and 1891 Lily was living with family in Church Road, Buckley. In 1901 she was

in service with William Nuttall, a medical practitioner, at Market St, Little Lever, Bolton.

This is the same town where sister Esther was married in 1901

Lily married John Iredale 17 October 1906 at St. Matthews, Buckley. In the parish

register John is listed as a greengrocer and Lily’s address is given as Southport.

John came from Huddersfield in Yorkshire but grew up in Oldham in Lancashire. His

mother and grandmother were confectioners. Lily presumably met John while she was in

service (i.e. working as a live-in servant) in Lancashire.

Lily and John opened a pie and peas shop in the Lane End area of Buckley, which later

became a bakery and cake shop and which they operated until retirement in the 1950’s1.

John died in 1957 but Lily survived to the age of 92, passing away in 1971. After retiring

from the shop, Lily and John lived in Tramroad, Buckley next door to my father’s sister,

Gwen and her husband, Jack Whitehead. This was near St. Matthews Church and around

the corner from where Lily lived as a girl.

John and Lily had two daughters, Olwen born 18 May 1916 who married Arthur Wilson,

and Joan born 26 April 1922 who married Charles Kelsall.

William Shone and Fanny Peters My great-grandfather, William Shone, was born in Fenton,

Staffordshire 14 May 1845. His parents were Samuel Shone

and Esther Bloor.

Samuel had evidently moved to Fenton to find work and he

met Esther. They moved to Buckley between 1847 and

1850.

William was a brickmaker and he lived in Church Road all

his married life as shown by the census from 1871 to 1911.

After his wife died, William and his daughter, Edna,

successfully applied for the post of custodian at St. John’s

Congregational Chapel and he was living at the Chapel

House when he died in 1925.

William married Frances (Fanny) Peters in 1866.

Fanny was the daughter of Richard Peters and Martha Roberts, born 5 July 1848 in the

Buckley Mountain area.

Richard Peters was born 21 August 1810, Bistre (baptised: 9 September 1810, St

Deiniol’s, Hawarden, son of Edward Peters and Frances Gittins, brickmaker, Beestree

[sic]. Richard Peters died 7 November 1869 Ewloe, Buckley.

Martha Roberts was born 14 December 1815 Buckley, baptised 7 January 1816

Hawarden, daughter of William Roberts and Elizabeth Prince. She died 31 November

1891 Buckley, buried: 3 December 1891, aged 76.

The Shone and Peters families were all residents of the Buckley Mountain/Knowle

Lane/Church Road/Lane End areas of Buckley. Fanny’s sister Mary Peters married James

Shone, a cousin of William (James and William were grandsons of William Shone and

Charlotte Peers).

Fanny died in Buckley in 1916. She was buried with her son Samuel and later husband

William and daughter Emma at St. Matthews.

Children of William and Fanny Shone

William and Fanny had 12 children between 1867 and 1889. At the time of the 1881

census, William and Fanny were living in Church Road with their children, Samuel,

Emma, William, Jesse, James, Esther and Lily who was just one year old. (Edna, Frank,

Charlotte, Emily and Lance were not yet born.) William is listed in the census as a

brickmaker and Samuel, aged 15, as a brick runner. Samuel died in 1882, the following

year. William, Fanny, Samuel and Emma are buried at St. Matthews.

2. Emma 1868 – 1959. “Aunt Emma” who lived next door to the Horse and Jockey pub in Church Road, never married, remembered on parents’ grave.

3. William 1870 - . Married Alice Bellis. Living in Manchester, New Moston 1901 with Harold 7 and Annie 6, cashier in cotton mill. Alice died 1902. William

married Jane Elizabeth Roberts living at Failsworth Manchester 1911, with Jane

Elizabeth 49, Annie 15, buyer textile machinery.

Good confirmation that this is the right William from Esther Jones tree showing

“Harold?” as son. Tree on Ancestry shows Harold Wesley Shone marrying Jessie

Ann Jackson Prescot, Lancs 1953.

Not found in 1939. Not the Edward W. Shone, joiner, b 15 Oct 1870, living with

Harold and Annie, Caroline St Stoke in 1939 -children’s birth years do not match

census.

Death not found but there are some possibilities that match correct age at death.

4. Jesse Richard 1873 – 1949. Married Charlotte Jones, son Frank present in 1911 census. Charlotte died and Jesse remarried Mary Ann Davies 1919. Jesse and

Mary Ann in Spon Green 1939 with Aubrey b 1922, Donald 1937. Frank attested

in RWF 1915 but discharged after 8 days likely medical reasons.

5. James Bloor 1875 – 1949. Married Elizabeth Rowlands. Children Herbert Bloor, Cyril, Lizzie, Freda, Colin, Hilda. Operated the James Shone & Sons transport

business in Knowle Lane. He started this business hauling coal by horse and cart

after he had lost an arm working in the Mountain Colliery

6. Esther 1877 - 1949. Married John Richard (Jack) Mitchell in Bolton 1899. Living in Little Lever Lancashire. 1901. Working at hospital in Llandudno 1911

with Jack listed as hospital porter and sister Emma listed as a cook. Likely Esther

Mitchell died 1949 Hawarden age 71

Frederick, Gladys.

10. Charlotte Anne 1885.- 1957. Married George Roberts; widow in 1939, living in Church Road. Children Edna married William Messham, Nevil married Sarah

Davies, Eric, Nellie (died as infant), Bessie married Thomas Hughes.

11. Emily 1887 -1957. Married George Williams; living at 1, Hillside Crescent in 1939 with George and son Wilfred

12. Lancelot 1889 – 1946. Married Sarah Emma Taylor, father of “Lancy” Shone who lived with Aunt Edna. Another son, Frederick was killed in Burma 13th

January 1945 and is buried at Taukkyan Cemetery.

Samuel Shone and Esther Bloor The current Shone family as we know it derives from three of the four sons of Samuel

Shone and Esther Bloor – William, James and George. A fourth son Alfred emigrated to

east Liverpool Ohio and has many descendants in the United States.

Samuel was born in Buckley 19 January 18173, the son of William Shone and Charlotte

Peers

Samuel Shone and Esther Bloor

Esther Bloor was my (Peter Kelsall’s) great-great-grandmother. She was born September

22, 1821 in Hanley, Staffordshire in the English Potteries district. Her parents were

Enoch Bloor and Elizabeth Pool and she was one of at least 9 children, including also

Harriett, Edny, James, Edward, Enoch, Joseph and Jesse, and Mary Ann.

Esther married Samuel Shone on December 15, 1839 in Hanley, Staffordshire. They

subsequently lived in Buckley, Flintshire and had eight children.

Samuel was born in Buckley and it seems likely that he was working in the Potteries

when he met Esther. Buckley was also a pottery town, thus providing a possible

connection, but Samuel is listed as a coal miner on his marriage certificate and in the

1841 census. According to the birthplaces listed in the 1881 census, they must have

moved to Buckley between the births of their third son, Samuel - who was born in

Longton, Staffordshire, and James who was born in Buckley. This places it between

September 1847 and August 1850.

Enoch Bloor 1842 - 1911 unmarried at age 38 in 1881, died 1911 in accident at

Brookhill clay quarry “While engaged in getting clay a piece

of rock weighing about four tons fell on to him”4 – when he

was 69.

Samuel and Esther were living in Wood St. in the Lane End district of Longton in 1841.

They were then at Buckley Mountain in 1851, Church Road in 1861 and 1871, Hope

View in 1881 and again in Church Road in 1891.

Samuel died 31 January 1897 and was buried 4 February at St. Matthew’s.

William Shone and Charlotte Peers William Shone married Charlotte Peers 24 December 1808 at Hawarden.

Children of William and Charlotte

From various sources6 children of William and Charlotte were:

1. John Shone, b. December 17, 1809, died 1892. John had children James, Emma, Margaret, and William. James married Mary Peters and had children Charlotte,

James, Sarah, Maria. My grandmother Lily Shone was living with James and

family in Church Road in 1891. Mary Peters was the sister of my great

grandmother Fanny Peters. The Peters sisters married cousins James and William

Shone.

2. Mary Shone, b. October 03, 1811, died 1881 3. Thomas Shone, b. November 22, 1813 – 1877, m Sarah Ratcliffe. Later moved to

Bromborough Cheshire (see later discussion of Shones of Staffordshire)

4. Samuel Shone, b. January 19, 1817, m. Esther Bloor, December 15, 1839, Hanley, Staffs, England – my 2x great grandparents.

Additional information from trees on Ancestry including DC Lovelady, Rose Figgins, Rita Myhan. Some

have an additional child Robert 1810 and Margaret 1834, but I have not confirmed.

8. Maria b 15 February 1827 9. Emma, b 13 January 1832, died 1927, married Joseph Simpson and later William

Bradbury

Charlotte died in April 1835, age 49. Possibly, she never recovered from giving birth to

Margaret at age 49.

William Shone

Various researchers have determined or perhaps assumed that William was the son of

Thomas and Mary of Bannel baptised 18 September 1789, and buried at St. Matthew’s 3

March 1864, age 75. What is the evidence for this?

• In 1841 William was living in Church Road with his children, John, James, Emma and Margaret, plus William’s second wife, Jane Thompson, her daughter Ann

Smith, and William 7 months who was presumably the child of William and Jane.

• In 1851, William age 62, Jane age 52 and son William were living in Lane End.

• In 1861 Jane Shone, age 65 is living in Parr, Lancashire (near St. Helens) with her son William Shone and a granddaughter Mary Smith Thompson. Jane appears to

be marked as a widow, but I believe that her husband William the father was in

Hindley, Lancashire (written as Chone on the census), age 72, born Wales living

with John and Mary Davies also born Wales. William is marked as a lodger,

unmarried and a coal labourer. [Hindley and Parr are about 10 miles apart. Did

William and family move to Lancashire to find colliery jobs, and did they then

have to split up? Were they forced to claim to be unmarried for financial reasons?

In 1851 John and Mary Davies were residents at Pentre, Mold. From GRO,

Mary’s maiden name was likely Lewis (not Shone).

• William died 29 February 1864 age 75. From his death certificate, William died in the Broughton Workhouse but he was buried at St. Matthew’s on 3 March.

• From his age when he died (which is consistent with ages in 1851 and 1861 censuses) we infer that William was born in 1788 or 1789. This fits William, son

of Thomas and Mary of Bannel baptised 18 September 1789.

• I have not found other candidates for William. Looking at other BMDs7 there is a William son of Thomas and Jane of Pentrobin baptised 8 June 1777, and a

William Shone of Pentrobin buried 29 June 1848 age 74 – but as noted our

William was alive in 1851.

Overall, the chronology through the census provides strong circumstantial evidence that

William was the son of Thomas and Mary of Bannel baptised 18 September 1789, and

buried at St. Matthew’s 3 March 1864, age 75.

Charlotte Peers

From the peers/Jackson tree on Ancestry (Rita Myhan), Charlotte Peers was the daughter

of John Peers (1748 – 1833) and Margaret Parry (1752 – 1832) baptised 2 October 1785.

This tree has a line going back to John Peers (1605 – 1666) – who would be my 8x great

grandfather.

Charlotte Shone was buried at St. Matthew’s, 28 April 1835, age 49.

William Shone and Jane Thompson

William married a widow, Jane Thompson (nee Smith) 31 August 1839.

In 1841 William and Jane were living in Church Road with William’s son John, John’s

children James, Emma and Margaret, William age 7 months, and Jane’s children Ann

Smith and John Thompson. William was the son of William and Jane born in 1840,

mother’s name recorded by GRO as Smith.

In 1851, William age 62, Jane age 52 and son William were living in Lane End. This

census shows that Jane was born in Salford, Manchester.

In 1861 Jane Shone, age 65 is living in Parr, Lancashire (near St. Helens) with her son

William Shone and a granddaughter Mary Smith Thompson. Jane appears to be marked

as a widow but as noted above we think William did not die until 1864. It seems that

William the father was in Hindley, Lancashire in 1861, (transcribed as Chone on

Ancestry), age 72, born Wales living with John and Mary Davies also born Wales.

William is marked as a lodger, unmarried and a coal labourer.

• Hindley and Parr are about 10 miles apart.

Both the 1864 and 1878 dates are close enough in terms of age. I have not found a parish

burial record for 1864. Jane Shone Dec 1878 was buried at Bistre.

But it looks like this Jane was wife of John Shone of Nant Mawr found in 1871 census,

age 76. [This John may be a brother of William 1789 although Rose Figgins has John

marrying Emma Beavan]

So is Jane died 1864 correct?

Where is the son William? Is this William age 40 in 1881, unmarried living in Spon

Green? – still present in 1911, age 73. Died 1916 age 76? It is noted that in addition to

William mother Smith born in 1840 there was also William Mar 1839 mother Hewitt and

William Mar 1839 mother Humphreys, both Holywell. Either of these is potentially the

William seen in 1881.

Origins of the Shone Family in Buckley The Shone line has been assembled from various sources with my own research

supplemented considerably by the work of Steven Shone, Marg Pember, Natalia

McKenzie and others. Much of what I see online I consider unproven.

Provided that we have the correct baptism of William Shone, 1789, he was the son of

Thomas and Mary. I originally obtained from Steven Shone that the parents of William

Shone were Thomas Shone and Mary Parry married 15 November 1788.

There are two known possibilities for Thomas [this all needs more review]:

1. Thomas Shone, collier of Bistre, buried at Hawarden 1 August 1817 age 61 – indicating born about 1756.

I do not see a baptism in 1756 but several trees on Ancestry8 link this Thomas to

Thomas, baptised 1 April 1750, son of Thomas Shone (notated “alias Edwards”)

of Pentrobin and Anne Evans9. This Thomas was a son of George Edwards Shone

and Dorothy, and then there is another George Edwards Shone and Anne.

2. From Natalia McKenzie, Thomas Shone buried 14 Oct 1837 age 7110 corresponding to birth about 1766. This corresponds to Thomas Shone, son of

John and Esther______, baptized 23 February 176611. Father John born about

1740 was the son of William Shone and Mary Read married 15 July 1734 at

I do not see a way to prove either of these lineages. I assign preference to the Natalia

McKenzie line based on the depth of her research in the Hawarden registers.

Mary Shone, wife of Thomas Shone collier of Bannel was buried at Hawarden, 25 May

1806 age 46.

From the Alex & Nick tree on Ancestry researched by Rose Figgins, Mary Parry was the

daughter of Benjamin Parry and Hannah Read. Benjamin was the son of John Parry and

Jane Hill. This is plausible but I don’t see how it can be proven.

Thomas Shone and Mary Parry had six children: William, George, Thomas, John, Ann,

and Mary12.

2. George, 1791-1848 – married Anne Millington and had 11 children: Hannah, Thomas, William, Sarah, George, Mary, Joseph, Anne, Jane, Charles, and

Elizabeth.

3. Thomas, 1793- , married Hannah Hewitt and had nine children: Thomas, Anne, John, Mary, Hannah, Jane, Samuel, Esther , and William. Mary is the ancestor of

Jenny Coombes. I have a distant DNA match to Jenny which may support that we

have the right William, son of Thomas and Mary.

4. John, 1795-1868 – married Emma Beavan and had nine children: Charles, Hannah, Anne, John, Thomas, Maria, Emma, Charlotte, and Joseph. Lived in

Pensnett, Kingswinford, Staffs.

From this, Fanny Peters who married William Shone also had Shone ancestors. I also

have Peters ancestors on both my father’s and mother’s sides.

Shones in Staffordshire In the 1841 census, Samuel and Esther, with daughter Emma 8 months old, were living in

the Lane End district of Stoke-on-Trent now part of Longton. Samuel is listed as a coal

miner and Esther as a pot painter. They are listed in Wood St., which is in the centre of

modern Longton, off King Street, opposite Longton Station. Thomas Shone is also listed

in Wood St., with wife Martha13 and children, Edward, Thomas and Charlotte – also John

Ratcliffe 30 and Martha Ratcliffe 15 –Based on age and his mother’s name, Charlotte,

Thomas is identified as Samuel’s brother born in 1813. Thomas married Sarah Ratcliffe,

8 March 1835 Stoke14. They had children, Edward 1836, Thomas 1839, Charlotte 1838,

William 1842, James 1844, John 1846 – all born in Longton – and Ann 1849 and George

1851 – born in Flintshire. We see that Thomas moved back to Buckley between 1846 and

1849. For comparison, we know Samuel and Esther moved back to Buckley between

September 1847 and August 1850. From research by Rose Figgins, Thomas and his

family later moved to Bromborough between 1851 and 1861. Their son Thomas is

probably the same Thomas found in Tranmere in 1881.

William Shone was listed in Church St., living with Charles and Sarah Jones. This is in

the centre of Stoke near the Spode Museum. While I have no other record of William it is

possible that he was another brother of Samuel’s, named after father William. Thomas

and William are listed as coal miners like Samuel.

In 1845, Samuel and Esther were living in China St., Fenton, as listed on the birth

certificate of their second son, William, my great grandfather. China St. is in the centre of

Fenton about one mile from Wood St. in Longton.

In the 1841 census, the Bloor family was living in the Terrace Building in Fenton, close

to Foley Mill. This was apparently a large building that housed many families shown

with the same address in the census. It is identified on the contemporary Ordnance

Survey map located near the center of Fenton approximately in the location of the

present-day north-south spur of the A50 adjacent to Glebedale Park. The Terrace

Building was located near Glebe and Oldfield Collieries and was near many china works

including Minerva, Lane Delph and Park.

13 Thomas’s wife is listed as Martha in 1841 but Sarah in subsequent census. I confirmed that the mother’s

name for Thomas born in 1839 was Ratcliffe, therefore it does not seem that Thomas married twice. I can

only think that Martha in 1841 is a mistake, perhaps a confusion with the other Martha Ratcliffe in the

Shones in East Liverpool, Ohio Samuel and Esther’s fifth son, Alfred, emigrated to East Liverpool in 1880 following his

cousin, James Bloor, who had emigrated from Staffordshire the previous year. (James

was the son of Esther’s brother, Joseph.) Alfred Shone married Esther Jones in Chester

29 June 1880.

Esther was the daughter of Samuel and Hannah Jones (nee Peters) of Bannel born 22

March 1859 (see Appendix).

Alfred sailed from Liverpool one day after he and Esther Jones were married in Chester.

Esther (Jones) Shone joined Alfred in East Liverpool one year later, traveling alone via

New York and Pittsburgh. They had eight children and have descendants in East

Liverpool and elsewhere in the US. Alfred Shone died 14 Oct 1905 in East Liverpool.

Esther (Jones) Shone died 1 Feb 1942.

The Shone and Bloor family histories in East Liverpool have been collected by Esther

(Thompson) Jones, Esther Bloor’s great granddaughter and my (Peter Kelsall’s) second

cousin once removed. Esther Jones started corresponding with the Shones in Buckley in

the 1960’s after she had written to the Buckley vicar, and she and her husband, Syd,

visited Buckley in 1972. Esther gave me the photographs of Samuel Shone and Esther

Bloor, and many old letters and newspaper cuttings that describe the Shones’ and Jones’

lives in the 1800’s.

Origin and Distribution of the Shone Name The name Shone derives from Sion, the old Welsh form of John (there is no letter J in

Welsh). Shone is a holdover that did not convert to Jones and is concentrated in northeast

Wales and adjacent English counties.

In the 1881 census there were 1300 people named Shone living in England and Wales

with 90% in five counties, Cheshire, Lancashire, Flintshire, Denbighshire and Shropshire.

There were 212 people named Shone in Flintshire
