ON JUNE 17th Everyone will be laughing at the antics

of clowns when the Lewis and Clark Circus rolls into

the Millerstown Community Park for two shows under

the big top on Wednesday, June 17 at 5 p.m and 7:30

p.m. The circus is being sponsored by the Millerstown

Recreational and Park Committee to benefit the

maintenance of the park and also for continued

development of the park.

Advance tickets will be on sale from any Park and

Recreational Committee member or by calling 717 589-

3598. Advance Adult tickets are $10 and two children

ages 14 and under are free with each adult ticket. Free

Childrens tickets will be distributed throughout the area

at area businesses, day cares and schools. The Park and

Recreational committee recommends that those planning

to attend to please purchase advance tickets as the Park

receives more commission on the advance sales. Also,

tickets will cost more on Circus Day at the show when

adult tickets will be $15 at the gate. The last day to

purchase advance tickets will be circus day, Wednesday,

June 17 before 12 noon.

now and I would like to write this article not only about

my own father, Robert James Clark but for all the great

Fathers that are just that, ‘Great Fathers.’

I’m talking about the Fathers who go to work

everyday, no matter what, and provide for their families.

They come home and help with the kids and take care of

the chores that involve running a household.

When I looked up Father in the dictionary it was very

vague and the definition sure wasn’t very long or

favorable. My definition of a Father is someone who is

always there for his family. He might not be very vocal

or maybe he is, he’s very loving and respectful of his

wife even though the wife doesn’t always perceive it in

that way because romance novels have made it very

tough for men to live up to the imaginations of their

wives and the authors of such books. My Dad use to tell

me, “your Mom wants me to tell her I love her and give

her flowers and such things when she should know I

would jump in front of her if a bullet came her way.” My

Father’s way of showing love was by doing things and

providing for his family. Also he would give you a

gentle touch every once in awhile or a special look. He

wasn’t real demonstrative of his love for his family he

was more an introvert. I do know when mom would get

frustrated of his desire to watch sports and unwind for

the weekend he would make an effort to play sports with

us kids out in the yard or card games or other activities.

Every year we went on a 2 week vacation and he would

save his lunch money for extra spending money for

vacation.

So many things my Dad did for me in my life. One

time I called him home from work because I thought

someone was trying to break into the house and at the

time my mom was working. I was so terrified he rushed

home from work to make sure we were safe. Instead of

going back to work we had a water battle. We were

using squirt guns and when I went to go in the house to

fill my gun he threw a whole bucket of water on me. It

was a fun memory.

I always thought my Dad could fix anything. I

remember when I was 16 someone was selling a van for

$25. I remember going home and telling my dad about it

asking if I could buy it and he could fix it up for me. We

went to look at it and he says, “Honey it doesn’t have an

engine.” (shaking his head at his silly daughter) We

wound up going car shopping and we did buy a “63

Ford van that was in great running condition. It was a bit

dirty but we bought it together and took it home and

washed and waxed it all up and made it pretty. It served

me well.

Yes, that was my daddy, he was a man of few words

but if you hung around him long enough he would give

you tidbits of wisdom that a clung too. We use to eat

dinner at 6:00 every night and I would love it when he

would start talking about life and we would have deep

discussions. That’s another thing he demanded of us all

that we would be home for supper at 6:00 to show

respect for my mom who took time to prepare dinner for

us all. You had to have permission to miss dinner and it

better be something important.

My mom and dad grew up during the depression and

my dad’s mom had to work, they all worked. For years

he wouldn’t let my mom get a job, he wanted her home

with us kids. I always appreciated that but mom, not so

much, she wanted a career but over the years they

worked it out and most of the time mom was home with

us kids. I am very thankful for my parents and how they

raised us. Yes, my father was a hard working man who

loved his family dearly and put his own desires to the

side to accomodate us many a time, just like my mom

did as well. We were a family and the family as a whole

had to be considered in every decision they made.

Sometimes one wouldn’t be as happy as the other but

I’m glad we hung in there together as a unit. My parents

were married over 50 years when my dad passed away

on March 21st in 2001 but he lives on in my memories

and I am happy to say he is in heaven with his grandson

Chris and one day I will join them. I love you Daddy

now and forever..
