Dear Editor
Our city government never ceases to amaze me; the city council approved a crematorium in downtown at the last council meeting. What amazes me is their double standard; over the last year or so we have heard these new buzz words being used by our city govern-ment to get their way in restricting our rights by passing any ordinance they wish, under these buzz words, "quality of life."
Our city has used those words to pass new rules on landlords, costing renters more money for repairs that sometimes are just ridicu-lous. ๏ฟฝ ey, our city council, have used the quality of life term to spend untold mil-lions of our tax dollars on bike trails that few citizens will ever use. By the way,
friends, you don't need a marked o๏ฟฝ bike lane to ride a bike on a street; white lines and little signs are a waste of money.
But our city rulers don't stop there, they've spent $6 million on a swimming pool that just cost too much for the poor people of Mt. Vernon to use. Quality of life for the upper class, yes, but not so much for the poor kids. ๏ฟฝ eir pursuit to make "quality of life" more than a buzz word is costing us more than most of us would approve if we just had a vote.
In my view, our city system is broken, and "quality of life" is a joke. It was used just last year to start a leaf burning ban; we were told it's for cleaner air. ๏ฟฝ en this week, with two new council members seated in our government, they gave a funeral home
the right to build a crema-torium in our town, all without any limits of op-eration. ๏ฟฝ is is very con-cerning to me, as a young couple pointed out the many dangers of toxic chemicals from crematori-ums. They provided the council with good informa-tion about the dangers of having a crematorium in town where children play outside.
I ask you, Mayor and Council, what happens to the quality of life for those living around this cremato-rium? And I'll ask you, the people of Mt. Vernon, those of you who seem to not care, or are not willing to pay at-tention to what your city is doing. Do you really want a mayor and council that cares more about million dollar bike trails, swimming pools, 12 foot wide side-walks, and millions on top of millions of dollars for a new industrial park when our water mains need re-placing? Do you really want a government passing rules against leaf burning but not
toxic chemicals? Well that is what we've got right here in the KING CITY.

What is it about the city of Dix and the Jefferson County Sheri๏ฟฝ 's Depart-ment? It has been estab-lished that the drinking of alcoholic beverages, within establishments, open to the public, within the city limits of the Village of Dix is against city ordinances. However, that law is not being enforced. Drinking is still allowed and accepted at the strip club during busi-ness hours. I can only con-clude that it is okay to drink alcoholic beverages during hours of business at all busi-nesses within the city of Dix.
With that being the case, I am going to start bringing my beer in with me and drinking it inside while con-ducting business at Austin's Restaurant, the lumberyard, the Bank of Dix and the gas
station store during busi-ness hours. I encourage everyone to do the same.
Reason One: ๏ฟฝ e law is not being enforced.
Reason Two: It must be legal and okay to do so since the law is not being en-forced.

The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to help their com-munities prepare for emer-gencies by giving blood d u r i n g N a t i o n a l
Preparedness Month this September.
Becoming a regular blood donor is one way to help ensure communities are prepared for any emer-
gency, including those where blood transfusions are needed. ๏ฟฝ e Red Cross also encourages the public to get prepared by making a disaster plan for their homes or work places.
A sufficient blood supply is central to ensur-ing hospitals are prepared to meet patient needs in times of disaster, including the very personal ones that can happen any day. Because blood takes about 48 hours to be tested, pro-cessed and made available for patients, itโs the blood already on the shelves that can help save the day when emergencies occur.
๏ฟฝ is month also marks the sixth year that the Red Cross and Sport Clips Haircuts have teamed up to help increase blood do-nations. Through the โSaving Lives Never Looked So Goodโ cam-paign, Sport Clips is thank-ing those who come to give blood in September with a coupon for a free haircut at participating Sport Clips locations. ๏ฟฝ e coupon is valid through Nov. 8, 2015, and will be sent to donors via email a few days a๏ฟฝ er their donation.
Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood, and volunteer
donors are the only source of blood for patients needing transfusions. ๏ฟฝ e Red Cross needs blood donors of all types โ es-pecially those with types AB, O negative, B negative and A negative โ to give blood regularly.
To make an appoint-ment to give blood, down-load the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcross-blood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). For information on planning for emergencies and preparedness training, visit redcross.org/prepare.

Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally
good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
Blood donors in the Missouri-Illinois Blood Services Region can now save time at their next dona-tion by using RapidPass to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, prior to arriving at the blood drive. To get started and learn more, visit redcross-blood.org/RapidPass and follow the instructions on the site.

While having lunch with a friend, Richard Freeman of Salem, we were comparing notes on the recent poll numbers, especially on the top two GOP candidates, Donald Trump and Dr. Ben Carson, with Trump number one and Carson catching up fast. I made the comment that I really liked Dr. Ben Carson and noted his common sense and intelligence, but that he is very so๏ฟฝ spoken, which concerned me. Richard re-minded me quickly of an old phrase that he believed ๏ฟฝ t Carson: "Speak softly and carry a big stick."
When reminded, it made me look at the doctor di๏ฟฝ er-ently, but it also reminded me of so many of Obama's red lines and what the opposite has done for our country. In other words, "Talk tough and don't carry a stick." Look where it's gotten us! Nowhere!
However, back to the widespread use of the ๏ฟฝ rst saying. "Speak softly and carry a big stick" began with American President ๏ฟฝ eo-dore Roosevelt. In a letter to Harry L. Sprague, on January 26, 1900, he wrote, "Speak so๏ฟฝ ly and carry a big stick; you will go far."
๏ฟฝ e "Big Stick" ideology refers to Roosevelt's foreign policy. He described his style as "the exercise of intelligent forethought and of decisive action in advance of any likely crisis."
In other words, beware, you have been forewarned, just the opposite of Obama's foreign policy.
Roosevelt used military muscle severa l t imes throughout his two terms. This included the Great White Fleet, 16 battle ships which peacefully circum-navigated the globe as an il-lustration of America's rising yet neutral prestige under his direction.
And at the end of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905
Roosevelt leveraged his posi-tion as a strong but impartial leader in order to negotiate a peace treaty between the two nations. "Speaking softly" earned the President a Nobel Peace Prize the following year for his e๏ฟฝ orts.
So with all that said, and not being a fan of Trump, if he's the chosen one for the GOP, I'm not ashamed to say I'll hold my nose and vote for Trump before I'll vote for Clinton!
However, I hope it's someone like Ben Carson, or Marco Rubio or even Ted Cruz, hopefully all capable of speaking so๏ฟฝ ly but carrying a big stick.
On to the crisis of refugees. More than half are ๏ฟฝ eeing from Syria.
Right now, Europe is facing the largest migrant crisis since WWII. More than 364,000 have arrived as of last week. But let's go back to what started this mass exodus. As much as I'm against war and was against Bush for sending troops in to Iraq because of misinforma-tion, I was more against Obama pulling all troops out of Iraq a๏ฟฝ er he took o๏ฟฝ ce. Iraq was stabilized, and in order to keep it that way, troops should have remained. A prime example would be South Korea. This move, which he was advised against, created a huge vacuum. Enter the movement and beginning of ISIS. And by the way, Clinton was part of this brainless action. Fast for-warding ahead: ๏ฟฝ is govern-ment โ Obama, with Clin-ton's help โ went in and decapitated Libya's govern-ment in the same time frame. ๏ฟฝ en President Muammar Gaddafi was murdered. ๏ฟฝ ere's no doubt he was a tyrant, but Libya wasn't better o๏ฟฝ a๏ฟฝ er our intervention, but rather worse o๏ฟฝ . It opened up everything from gun running
to the tragedy of Benghazi. And to make matters worse, Russia is the biggest sup-porter of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria, and you can be assured Iran is also behind a lot of this chaos. And what do we do? We make a deal with Iran, a country that wants to destroy Israel and the U.S. as well!
What a mess! Just before press time, Russia was calling on other nations to help arm the Syrian government, de-scribing it as the most e๏ฟฝ -cient force against ISIS. No wonder the Syrian people are ๏ฟฝ eeing.
I'm the first to say this country is war weary. But I also believe there is a time for all things. Read Ecclesiastes Chapter 3, Verses 1 through 22, especially Verse 8: "A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace."
In listening to Hillary lay out her plans for Syria, I thought too bad she wasn't smart enough to have a plan before the gates of Hell in the Middle East were opened (with her help as then Secretary of State).
๏ฟฝ e biggest mistake is you don't draw red lines and not follow through. ๏ฟฝ is admin-istration has done just the opposite of "Speak so๏ฟฝ ly and carry a big stick."
A ๏ฟฝ nal thought: ISIS is not just an enemy; it's a move-ment and will need to be taken out in the area where it began, and air strikes won't do it!
Until next week.

Fresh herbs enhance foods in a way that's unmatched by any other ingredient. As long as I can remember I've put in a herb garden, and I put it to good use through the summer months. In the fall I dry what's le๏ฟฝ in the garden and use the herbs all winter. But keep in mind, many dried herbs are available in the spice section of the grocery store. Some of my favorite recipes are below.
Focaccia With Fresh Herbs(Italian Pizza And Hearth Bread)
๏ฟฝ is is a pizza-like ๏ฟฝ atbread ๏ฟฝ avored with herbs and olive oil. Use herbs associated with Italian cuisine, such as oregano, basil and rosemary, in any combination. I love to combine basil with a little mozzarella cheese and thinly sliced tomatoes.
1/2 tsp. active dry yeast 1/2 tsp. salt1/2 tsp. sugar 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil3/4 cup very warm (105ยฐ-110ยฐF) water 2 T. fresh herb leaves2ยพ cups unbleached or all-purpose ๏ฟฝ our 1/2 tsp. kosher, or coarse, saltSprinkle yeast and sugar into 1/2 cup very warm water. Let stand about 10 minutes, or until surface
becomes bubbly. In large bowl, combine ๏ฟฝ our and salt. Make a well in center. Pour in yeast mixture and 1 T. olive oil. Stir well with wooden spoon or electric mixer. Continuing to stir, slowly add 1/4 cup very warm water. Dough will be so๏ฟฝ and slightly sticky. Turn dough out onto very lightly ๏ฟฝ oured surface. Knead for 10 minutes, adding a small spoonful of ๏ฟฝ our only if absolutely necessary. Put dough in warm (80ยฐ-85ยฐF) place, loosely cover with plastic wrap sprayed with nonstick cooking spray or a damp cloth, and let rise until doubled in bulk, or about 1 hour. Turn dough out onto lightly ๏ฟฝ oured surface and knead gently several times, then ๏ฟฝ atten out to a 10" circle. Place on an oiled baking stone, pizza pan or heavy cookie sheet. Press indentations with ๏ฟฝ ngers to give it dimples. Loosely cover and let rise in warm place about 45 minutes, or until doubled in bulk. Heat oven to 425ยฐF. Combine 3 T. olive oil and herbs in food processor, blender, or mortar and pestle until leaves are broken up and oil is fragrant. Pour herb-oil mixture over focaccia and rub gently into the surface. Sprinkle top with salt. Bake 15 minutes, then reduce heat to 400ยฐF and bake 5 minutes more, or until golden brown. Let cool and cut into wedges. Yield: One 10" bread.
White Beans With Tomatoes, ๏ฟฝ yme, Savory And Tarragon1 lb. white kidney or Great Northern beans 2 T. Worcestershire sauce1/4 cup canola oil 5 cups vegetable stock or canned3 cups chopped yellow onions vegetable broth6 garlic cloves, crushed 2ยฝ pounds tomatoes, peeled, seeded,1 bay leaf and chopped5 (4") sprigs fresh thyme 3 T. chopped fresh tarragon leaves3 (4") sprigs fresh savory 1/4 cup lemon juice4 whole cloves 1 tsp. salt1/2 cup dry white wine 1/2 tsp. ground black pepper1/4 cup white wine vinegarSoak dried beans 12 hours in large bowl of cold water that covers them by at least 4 inches. Change
water once, a๏ฟฝ er 6 hours. Heat oil in large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onions and garlic, and cook, stirring, about 8 minutes, or until so๏ฟฝ . Stir in bay leaf, thyme, savory and cloves, and cook 2 to 3 more minutes, or until herbs are fragrant. Add beans, wine, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, stock or broth, and enough water to cover beans by 2 inches. Bring to boil, skim o๏ฟฝ foam, and reduce heat to low. Cover and cook until beans are tender, or about 2 hours. Stir in tomatoes, turn up heat to medium-high, and cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add tarragon and cook 3 minutes. Add lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Serve immediately. Yield: 8 servings
Roast Pork Loin Stu๏ฟฝ ed With Dried Apricots, Shallots And Sage4 T. canola oil 1/2 cup brandy1 lb. dried apricots, cut into 1/4" pieces 2 cups orange juice 2 T. chopped shallots 1ยฝ cups coarse dry bread crumbs4 scallions, cut into 1/4" slices 2 large eggs, lightly beaten, or 1/2 cup egg substitute1/3 cup raisins 4- to 5-lb. boneless pork loin, trimmed 1 T. chopped fresh sage leaves Heat oven to 500ยฐF. Heat 2 T. canola oil in skillet over medium-high heat and stir in apricots, shal-
lots, scallions, raisins and sage. Cook about 2 minutes, or until sage is fragrant. Stir in brandy and simmer 1 minute. Stir in 1 cup orange juice, bring to boil, lower heat to medium, and reduce liquid by one-third. Remove from heat and stir in bread crumbs. Let cool. Stir in eggs. Cut pork loin in half lengthwise, leaving one side attached. Fold open and cut out a trough about 1" deep and 2" wide in center of each half. Fill troughs with bread crumb mixture. Fold the two halves together and tie with kitchen string. Heat remaining 2 T. oil in large ovenproof skillet or roasting pan over high heat. Add pork loin and brown on all sides. Pour in remaining 1 cup orange juice. Transfer to oven and cook 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350ยฐF. Basting every 20 minutes, cook for 1ยฝ hours. Remove from oven and let stand 10 minutes. Cut into 1" slices and serve with pan juices. Yield: 8 to 10 servings.
Grilled Shrimp With Citrus And Herbs2 limes, thinly sliced 1 tsp. dried hot red pepper ๏ฟฝ akes1 lemon, thinly sliced 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced3 T. olive oil 10 (4-inch) sprigs of fresh herbs2 T. Galliano or anisette liqueur 2ยฝ lbs. large shrimp, in the shell1 T. tequilaCombine all ingredients in large bowl or dish, cover, and refrigerate 4 to 6 hours, stirring occasion-
ally. Prepare grill. Remove shrimp from marinade, place on metal skewer, and grill about 2 minutes on each side. Both sides should be red and center of head end opaque. Yield: 4 servings.

By the Word of their Testimony
Public enemy number one doesnโt have a poster hanging in the post o๏ฟฝ ce nor is he on the most wanted list of the FBI. Public enemy number one is more in-sidious, dangerous, and deceptive than any criminal or terrorist. Jesus called him the thief who comes to steal, kill, and destroy. (John 10:10) In Revelation 12 he is referred to as the great dragon, the serpent of old, called the devil and Satan, โwho de-ceives the whole world.โ (Revelation 12:7) Satan, who is called, โthe accuser of our brethren,โ will very soon be cast out of the heavens. We are given this warning, โTherefore, rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them. Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows he has a short time.โ (Revelation 12:10-12)
God has enabled His followers to overcome the onslaught of the devil, the accuser, with three powerful weapons. โAnd they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their
testimony and they did not love their lives to the death.โ (Revelation 12:11) ๏ฟฝ e ๏ฟฝ rst weapon that defeats the devil and the power of sin is โthe blood of the lamb.โ Through the blood of the lamb, Jesus Christ, atonement for sin was made. ๏ฟฝ e power of sin and death was defeated. ๏ฟฝ e second weapon โthe word of our testimony,โ is how the power of the blood of Christ is acti-vated in oneโs life and situation. The third weapon, โthey did not love their lives to the death,โ is the pathway of discipleship for all fol-lowers of Christ. The word of your testimony can defeat the devil and route the enemy. Con-sider these aspects of the power of your testimony.
TESTIFY TO THE POWER OF THE BLOOD. ๏ฟฝ e early be-lievers overcame the accuser by testifying to the e๏ฟฝ cacy of the blood of Jesus. When the devil points out your sins to you, point him to the
cleansing blood of Jesus shed on the cross. Testify to the promises of Godโs Word. (I John 1:7; Romans 8:25; Colossians 1:14; I Peter 1:2, 19; Rev-elation 1:5; 12:11) David prayed for cleansing from sin. (Psalm 51:7-10) David referred to the hyssop plant by which the Israelites applied the blood of the lamb to the doorposts of their homes, just as the power of the blood of Christ provides cleansing for believers.
TESTIFY TO THE POWER OF THE LORDSHIP OF CHRIST OVER YOUR LIFE. ๏ฟฝ e devil has no power over a surrendered life. Have you surrendered your life totally to the Lord Jesus Christ? We are given this secret to de-feating the accuser. โAnd loved not their lives to the death.โ (Revelation 12:11) Confess Jesus as Lord. (Romans 10:9) Jesus called the rich young ruler to sell ev-erything he had, give it to the poor, โand you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross and follow me.โ (Mark 10:21) Is your treasure in heaven or on earth? Someone said, โHe is Lord of all or not at all.โ Examine the people that Jesus
called. ๏ฟฝ ey le๏ฟฝ every-thing to follow Christ. (Romans 12:1-2) Testify to the Lordship of Christ.
TESTIFY TO WHAT THE LORD HAS DONE IN YOUR LIFE. The power of a personal tes-timony speaks volumes and gets peopleโs atten-tion. ๏ฟฝ e apostle Paul constantly shared his testimony of his Damas-cus road experience and how he was converted into a follower of Christ. You may not have had a dramatic Damascus road experience, but if you have had a born again life changing ex-perience with Christ, God will use your testi-mony to touch and en-courage others. The power of your personal testimony will strength-en your faith, bless others, and defeat the devil. โLet the redeemed of the Lord say so.โ (Psalm 107:2)
If the accuser of the brethren, the devil, is pushing you around, use these three powerful weapons โ the blood of the Lamb, the word of your testimony, and not loving your life, even until death.Shalom,Cli๏ฟฝ SandersEagle Life [email protected]

Any negative indications should be dealt with before they be-come too burdensome.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Congratulations. A more positive aspect highlights much of the Virgoโs week. You should ๏ฟฝ nd others more receptive to your suggestions, and also more likely to act on them.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) All work and little play could wear the
Libraโs usually positive attitude down. Take some much-needed time o๏ฟฝ . Perhaps a short jaunt with someone special is the way to go.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) ๏ฟฝ is is a good time to expand your view from the known to the unfamil-iar. Confronting new situations could be challenging, but ultimately also could be extremely satisfying.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to De-cember 21) Giving advice to those who just want validation for what theyโre doing can be unsettling. So back o๏ฟฝ and save your counsel for those who really appreciate it.CAPRICORN (December 22 to Janu-ary 19) Cultivating a more positive attitude not only makes you feel better about yourself, but also has an upbeat e๏ฟฝ ect on those around you, especially that certain someone.AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Keeping the lines of communica-tion open and accessible is the key to establishing the right foundation on which to build an important and meaningful relationship. Stay with it.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Before agreeing to act on a request, consider using your perceptive Piscean talents to see what might lie hidden beneath its surface and could possibly cause problems later on.BORN THIS WEEK: Youโre a friend who, if you err at all, does so on the side of concern for those you care about.

โข Now that school is back in session, those who had the summer o๏ฟฝ

โข If you're one of those parents who has to be careful walking around the house barefoot, you probably will not be sur-prised to learn that the LEGO company makes more than 3,500 di๏ฟฝ erent pieces in more than 60

are not for the jealous type. In that country, tra-dition states that if the bride leaves the room, all the men line up to kiss her. What's good for the goose is good for the gander, though โ if the groom leaves, all the women are supposed to get in line to demonstrate their a๏ฟฝ ection. I imagine very few exes are invited to Swedish weddings.
โข British writer Lewis Carroll โ best known for h i s b o o k " A l i c e ' s A d v e n t u r e s i n Wonderland" โ invented the idea of the dust jacket for books.
