Obama held a press con-ference last Sunday ad-dressing the mass shooting in Florida that le 50 dead (49 victims and the shooter) and another 53 wounded and ghting for their lives. At this point, this terrorist shooting was the worst in modern U.S. history. It leaves me wondering when did this kind of craziness start, but more important, where does it stop?

On this latest tragedy, the shooter made a call to 911 and pledged allegiance to ISIS. We also know that in the past he had been inves-tigated by the FBI; he was a private security guard and was assigned to a number of federal buildings. He was a sympathizer with radical Islam and inspired by ISIS.

Fitting in with the ISIS ideology against gays, along with many other communi-ties, this tragedy was carried out at Pulse, a well known gay night club in Orlando, Florida. He clearly wanted the world to know this was an ISIS inspired attack.

Keep in mind Ramadan

started a few days ago, and some Islamic extremists have said that to kill Amer-icans during this Muslim time of atonement will gain ten times more glory in heaven by "killing the in del."

During the press confer-ence, as Obama addressed the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, he said, "While still learning all the facts, this was an act of ter-rorism by an individual lled with hate." He also said the federal government would help Orlando in any way they could. Obama pointed out any attack on Americans is an attack on all Americans. Obama's entire press conference lasted less than ve minutes and he answered no ques-tions.

I believe this was the rst time I have heard him use the words terrorist attack in any press conference a er the fact. However, he never used the words Islamic or ISIS.

What is clear is this shooter was born in the

U.S., raised by parents from Afghanistan and was a Muslim.

ISIS did come out and say the shooter was an ISIS ghter! So they are taking credit for yet another bar-baric act.

I said earlier, "When does this stop?" In my opinion, it has to start with stronger leadership than we've had over the last eight years.

In closing, let me say the name of the shooter was not used in this column; that was done in honor of those that lost their lives and those that are now ghting for their lives. No ISIS ter-rorist deserves to have his or her name in the press.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all the victims and their families.

To comment on this or any column in e Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Box 1223, Centralia IL 62801, email to [email protected] or drop it o at the o ce on 301 E. Broadway. In order for your letter to be considered for publication, you must provide your signature and an address and phone number where you can be reached. Addresses and phone numbers will not be published.

Favorite Southern SaladsA nice salad can be the most delicious way to start a meal. But if you're like me, I can make a

meal out of a refreshing salad and enjoy every bite! Mama says it comes from my grandfather and my southern background, because down south salad means so much more than a side plate piled high with lettuce and cucumbers. Southern salads stand on their own. Below are some of my fam-ily's favorites.

Fried Chicken SaladButtermilk Dressing:1/3 cup buttermilk 1/2 tsp. salt1/4 cup olive oil 1/4 tsp. black pepper1 tsp. fresh lemon juice 3 T. chopped fresh chives

Fried Chicken:1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breasts Black pepper2 large eggs, lightly beaten Vegetable oil, for deep-frying1 cup self-rising our Salt

Salad:12 cups mixed greens 1/2 small Vidalia onion, thinly sliced2 plum tomatoes, chopped

To make dressing: In small bowl, whisk together buttermilk, oil, lemon juice, salt and black pepper. Whisk in chives. To make chicken: Cut chicken into l-inch strips. In wide, shallow bowl, whisk eggs with 1/4 cup water. In separate wide, shallow bowl, whisk together our and 1/2 tsp. black pepper. In large saucepan, heat 3 inches oil to 350°F. Coat chicken with eggs and let excess drip back into bowl. Dip chicken in our and shake o excess. Add chicken to hot oil and cook until golden and cooked through, 3 to 4 minutes. en set on paper towel-lined plate to drain. Season chicken with salt and black pepper to taste. To make salad: Toss together greens, tomatoes, onion, and two-thirds of the dressing in large bowl. Divide greens among 4 to 6 serving plates, depending on how many people you want to feed. Top greens with fried chicken and drizzle with remaining dressing. Serve immediately. Serves 4 to 6.

Taco Salad1 lb. ground beef 1 avocado, pitted, peeled and chopped1 packet (1¼ oz.) taco seasoning 4 scallions, chopped1 head iceberg lettuce, shredded 2 cups crumbled tortilla chips2 cups (8 oz.) shredded sharp 1/3 cup fresh or store-bought salsa cheddar cheese 1/3 cup sour cream2 plum tomatoes, chopped 2 tsp. fresh lime juice

Heat large skillet over medium-high heat. Add beef and cook, breaking up with fork, until browned, 5 to 7 minutes. Stir in taco seasoning and 1/3 cup water; simmer until liquid is just about gone, 3 to 5 minutes. In large salad bowl, combine beef, lettuce, 1½ cups cheddar, tomatoes, avocado, and scallions. Toss in 1½ cups crumbled tortilla chips. In small bowl, whisk together salsa, sour cream and lime juice. Pour over salad and toss to combine. Sprinkle top with remaining 1/2 cup cheddar and 1/2 cup crumbled tortilla chips and serve. is salad tastes great hot or cold. Serves 6 to 8.

Corn, Tomato And Shrimp Salad2½ tsp. fresh lemon juice 1 head Boston lettuce, torn into bite-size pieces 1/2 tsp. salt 1⅓ cups corn kernels, cooked fresh1/2 tsp. black pepper or thawed frozen2 cloves garlic, nely chopped 2 plum tomatoes, sliced1/4 cup olive oil 1/2 small red onion, very thinly sliced1 lb. small shrimp, cooked and peeled 1/3 cup chopped fresh basil

In small bowl, whisk together lemon juice, salt, black pepper and garlic. Whisk in oil until completely combined. In large salad bowl, combine shrimp, lettuce, corn, tomatoes, onion and basil. Pour dressing over salad and toss well to combine. is salad is best served just as soon as you make it up. Serves 4.

Warm Macaroni Salad2 cups (about 8 oz.) elbow macaroni 3 T. nely chopped bread-and-butter pickle1/2 cup grated carrot (about 1 large) 2/3 cup mayonnaise3 T. nely chopped Vidalia onion 1/2 tsp. salt1 celery stalk, nely chopped 1/4 tsp. black pepper

In large pot of boiling salted water, cook pasta according to package directions. Drain well and transfer to large serving bowl. Add carrot, onion, celery and pickle to warm macaroni. Stir in mayonnaise, salt and black pepper. Serve while warm. Serves 6 to 8.

Can Renter be Forced to Give Up His Pet?

D E A R P A W ’ S CORNER: I’m in a dilemma. I’ve had my dog for about five years. “Shera” stays with me in my apartment, one of six in a triple-decker house, and there have been no problems until now. Now, a new owner has bought the house and told me I cannot have a pet: I must either get rid of Shera or move out. What can I do? — Desperate in Worcester, Massachusetts

DEAR DESPERATE: I feel for you, and I hope I can give you some useful advice in this limited space. My rst tip is to act fast, and the sooner the better. I recommend im-mediately contacting

your state’s legal services or aid resource, if there is one, to discuss the problem. You also could nd free or low-cost legal advice through the state’s bar association or perhaps at a local university.

Your local library can be a great resource, too — you can get online for free, and the librarians can be very helpful.

Renters have fairly ex-tensive rights in most states. A new landlord usually cannot simply walk in and demand you get rid of your pet. e existing lease typically cannot be changed sud-denly, either. And even if you don’t have a signed lease (some apartments are still “handshake” agreements) the landlord typically must still give reasonable notice of a change in the terms.

You also might try of-fering your landlord a non-refundable pet deposit. ese are some-times required in rentals that accept pets.

ere’s much more in-formation out there than I have room to write about here. But basically, you have more rights

than you think. Stay calm, but immediately start contacting organizations that can help.

Cowboy Penknife

Q: My dad gave me a Hopalong Cassidy black and white penknife. Dad is now 85 years old and thinks he originally received it when he was about 10 or 12 years old. Does it have any value? — Matthew, Bloomingdale, Illinois

A: There were several Hopalong Cassidy knives issued, and I am not certain which one you have. Ac-cording to "Hopalong Cassidy Collectibles" by Joe Caro, the black single-blade knife would sell in the $150-$225 range if in excel-lent condition.

***Q: I have been searching

for several years for a catalog about Shirley Temple dolls. I have even contacted the Bradford Exchange where some of my dolls were pur-chased. I did not get any help. I have several dolls from the 1980s and '90s that I want to find values. — Evelyn, Coventry, Rhode Island

A: I nd it interesting that the Bradford Exchange would not help you since some of your dolls were purchased there.

ere are at least a dozen excellent price guides for Shirley Temple items. Two I especially recommend are "Shirley Temple Dolls and Price Guide" by Suzanne Kraus-Mancuso (Holly House Books) and "The Complete Guide to Shirley Temple Dolls and Collect-ibles" by Tonya Bervaldi-Camaratta (Collector Books). Both are available at www.amazon.com.

***Q: I have crystal, glass-

ware and vases from the 1940s, some earlier. I also have some embroidered handkerchiefs that were my grandmothers, a blue- ow-ered vegetable bowl and necklaces from the 1890s. Other items include stone-ware, a teapot and gold-rimmed fruit bowls dating back 150 years. Where can I sell these items? — Vir-ginia, Albuquerque, New

MexicoA: You are fortunate that

you live in a larger city that has dozens of excellent antique and collectible dealers. is is where you should start. I always rec-ommend to my readers that they buy and sell locally when possible. If that idea doesn't work or appeal to you, there is eBay.

***Q: In 1938, I bought a

Packard Bell tabletop radio. It is Model 46D in a wooden case. I love the radio, and it still plays. — Steve, Jackson, Mississippi

A: Most radios of this type retail for about $100.

e Church of the Open Door

e church of Phila-delphia was only one of two churches of Asia that Jesus did not give a word of condemnation. In fact, He gave them a wonderful promise. “And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write, ‘ ese things says He who is holy, He who is true, He who has the key of David, He who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens. ‘I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door.’” (Revelation 3:7-8)

What a blessing! Have you ever had a door close to you? I think most of us have at one time or another. It can be disap-pointing, but if you love God, He promises to “work all things togeth-er for your good.” (Romans 8:28) What would you do if God set before you “an open door”? I hope you would take advantage of the great opportunity. How can we come to the place where, like the church of Philadelphia, God sets before us an “open door and no one can shut it”?

THE POWER OF BROTHERLY LOVE. is church was situated

in the city of ancient Philadelphia. e name means “brotherly love”. The inhabitants were o en victims of earth-quake and the eruption of an active volcano. We are admonished, “Let brotherly love continue. Do not forget to enter-tain strangers . . . Re-member the prisoners.” (Hebrews 13:1-3; II Peter 1:7-8) God opens doors to those who display “brotherly love”.

Perhaps the best church sign I’ve ever seen was displayed at Cornerstone Church in Marion IL. I’ll share an abbreviated form, “Cor-nerstone Church wel-comes those who are single, married, di-vorced, engaged, gay or straight. We welcome the lthy rich, dirt poor, or no habla ingles. We also welcome those who are crying newborns, old as dirt, skinny as a rail, or could a ord to lose a few pounds. We welcome soccer moms, NASCAR

dads, . . . nose pickers, veterans, vegetarians, . . . If you blew all your of-fering money at the casino, you are welcome here. If you are inked, pierced, or both, you are in the right place. If you are in recovery or still addicted, we are happy to see you.

“We welcome you because we have experi-enced the thrill of being welcomed by God. We were once a mess, but God willingly welcomed us through the cross-stretched arms of Jesus. He gave His life so we could experience real life and be part of His forever family. God is delighted to see you here. We are too!” at’s a church of the open door!

THE POWER OF THE KEY OF DAVID. “He who has the key of David.” (Revelation 3:7) Jesus Christ is the son of David. e key of David speaks of the authority believers have in the name of Jesus. e power of prayer in Jesus name opens doors that no one can shut. (John 14:13-14; 15-16; 16:23-26) The church of Philadelphia was commended by Jesus, “You . . . have kept my Word and have not denied my name.” (Rev-

elation 3:8) They suf-fered much persecution and many were mar-tyred. ey were thus a small church but a mighty church. Be faith-ful to the name of Jesus.

THE POWER OF P E R S E V E R A N C E . Because this church per-severed under severe trials, God promised them many blessings. (Revelation 3:9-11) e seal of the city of God and the Lord’s new name would be upon their heads. (Revelation 3:12) An open door that no one could shut would be set before them. Near our home there is a youth camp called the Pinnacles. Carved out of the rock by wind and water over thousands of years are breathtaking spires, pinnacles, cli s and caves. e word per-severance comes to me.

Recently a post on Facebook read, “Patience is not just enduring testing and trials. It’s your attitude in the midst of them.” Perse-vere in faith and watch God open a door that no one can shut.
