Ascension Wow! It seems as though we just celebrated Holy Week and Easter Sunday and now we are already talking about the Solemnity of the Ascension of our Lord into heaven. This coming Thursday, May 21, the Church celebrates the Ascension in the Tridentine Form (Old Latin Mass). On this coming Thursday, I will celebrate the Tridentine Latin Mass of the Ascension at 8:00 a.m. in private. Paul Rau will livestream this Mass from our Facebook and website pages at that time. If you should miss the 8:00 livestream, you will be able to view the recorded replay on YouTube via our Facebook and webpage links. For the English and Spanish celebrations of the Ascension according to the Ordinary Form of the Mass, the Solemnity of the Ascension in the Archdiocese of Chicago is transferred to Sunday, May 24. This m eans that the Mass of the Ascension in English w ill be livestream ed on Saturday, May 23 at 4:00 p.m. as we have been doing each weekend. The Spanish Mass of the Ascension will be livestreamed at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 23 as we have been doing each weekend. The 9:30 livestreamed Latin Mass on Sunday morning, May 24 will be that for the “Sunday after the Ascension.” I hope all this information as I have presented it is clear. I think it is important for us here at St. Odilo to continue our tradition of offering the Holy Mass in Latin, English and Spanish as usual. I know it takes some finessing during the high holydays, but it’s certainly worth the effort to meet everyone’s spiritual needs. The Mystery of the Ascension takes place forty days from the Resurrection of Jesus (Easter Sunday). The Ascension is recorded in the last chapters of the Gospel according to Matthew, Mark and Luke. It is also recorded in the first chapter of the Acts of the Apostles. I recommend that you read and meditate on a different one of these passages each day leading up to the Solemnity of the Ascension as a way to prepare for the great celebration of this sacred mystery. Each rendition offers us a different facet of the event for our spiritual edification. One of the most comforting and encouraging quotes comes from the Ascension account in Acts of the Apostles: after Jesus ascends into heaven, the angels appear to the Apostles who are looking up into heaven and say, “Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven.” That statement of the angels is the cause of our hope, even in these difficult days. Jesus, Who ascended into heaven, will return to earth in glory. He will establish His Kingdom here among us, and there will be no more sorrow, no more suffering, no more of man’s inhumanity to man, no more disease, no more sin. As the children of the post-Ascension Church, we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Lord, Jesus Christ! Blessed Ascension to all of you. Fr. Bart

El Misterio de la Ascensión ocurre cuarenta días de la Resurrección de Jesús (domingo de
Pascua). La Ascensión se registra en los últimos capítulos del Evangelio según Mateo, Marcos y Lucas. También se registra en el primer capítulo de los Hechos de los Apóstoles. Os recomiendo que leáis y meditéis en uno de estos pasajes diferentes cada día, previos a la solemnidad de la Ascensión, como vía de preparación para la gran celebración de este sagrado misterio. Cada interpretación nos ofrece una faceta diferente del evento para nuestra edificación espiritual. Una de las citas más reconfortantes y alentadoras proviene del relato de Ascensión en Hechos de los Apóstoles: después de que Jesús asciende al cielo, los ángeles se aparecen a los Apóstoles que están mirando hacia el cielo y dicen: "Hombres de Galilea, ¿por qué están allí de pie mirando al cielo? Este Jesús que ha sido tomado de vosotros al cielo, volverá de la misma manera como le habéis visto ir al cielo.”
Esa declaración de los ángeles es la causa de nuestra esperanza, incluso en estos días difíciles.
Jesús, Que ascendió al cielo, volverá a la tierra en gloria. 2021 MASS BOOK We have received the Mass Book for the year 2021. In a sense of fairness to all, we will use the following guidelines for Mass intentions: We will accept 12 Mass requests per family, two of which may be scheduled on Sundays or the 4PM Saturday Mass. Please do not ask for more than two weekend Masses. The process of scheduling these Mass intentions is detailed and time consuming and we ask your consideration. The donation is $10.00 per Mass. On Tuesdays and Thursdays only we schedule multiple intentions. On these days multiple intentions are remembered at the 8:00 (8:10) AM Masses. It is important to remember that certain dates are not open for intentions - Christmas, Holy Week Triduum, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, All Souls, etc. The reason is these dates are reserved for the People of the parish. Please abide by these guide lines. We know we can count on your cooperation. Please mail your list to the Rectory or drop it off in the Rectory mail box. We will then mail you a confirmation of your intentions. If the date you request is already taken, the closest possible date will be scheduled. Thank you to all of you who are contributing to our parish support each week. The collection from last weekend was lower than usual during this time of the health crisis. Please remember that we rely on the support of all our parishioners in order to pay our utilities and maintain our facilities so that we may resume our ministry to you once we receive the Cardinal’s permission to reo-pen. I realize it’s a lot to ask and that many of you are struggling with your own concerns. This is just a friendly reminder so that we may keep our parish financially viable in order to keep our spiritual ministry viable as well. Thank you all.
