t ance o f comm on ru les which is sufficient fo r a ll purposes o f com munica t ion , b u t w hich

is never ful ly adequate to br ing express ion to com plet ion.But unfor tunate ly , Mer leau-Ponty nei ther f inished nor ever publ i shed the f inal sys-

middle pe r iod he did no t even achieve the unif ication of his incipient thoughts on the
