Requirements

• Pass a NRA or OPOTC course that meets Ohio’s requirements.

• At least 10 hours of instruction and 2 hours range time.

• Pass a written test.

Application Process

• Apply with Sheriff in county of residence or surrounding county.

• Minimum fee of $67.

• Provide them with certificate of training and fingerprints.

• Sheriff’s office will complete a background check and issue license if appropriate.

Further Qualifications

• Residency: 45 days in Ohio; in county of application for 30 days.

• Criminal Record: No felonies, either convicted or currently charged; no drug offenses, misdemeanor charges of violence, no domestic violence, no falsification of a handgun license.

• Mental Competency: must not have been found mentally incompetent, have been committed to a mental institution, etc…

• Must not be the subject of a restraining order, either CPO or TPO.

• As long as you meet these requirements the Sheriff must issue the license within 45 days.

Apartments/Work

• Private employers may ban guns from the work and parking lots.

• Not a criminal act, may be cause for civil action.

• Landlords can’t prohibit residents from lawfully carrying or possessing on their premises.

• Ohio is a “print” state.

Signs

• No standard sign

• Must be conspicuous

Open Carry

• Ohio IS an open carry state, but should be done with caution.

Reciprocity

• Current Agreements: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wyoming

• Indiana honors Ohio, not vice versa

• Must conform to the laws of those states while there.

Castle Doctrine

• You do not have a duty to retreat from your home or vehicle.

• “A man’s home is his castle.”

• “Rebuttable presumption” means that the prosecution has the burden to produce evidence to the contrary.
