The Skinny on SD-WAN

May 2017

SD-WAN is the hottest software-defined networking (SDN) technology today. The technology facilitates the replacement of MPLS with internet, enables direct access to the public cloud from remote sites, and supports infrastructure consolidation through network functions virtualization (NFV). The end result is a network that improves global application performance.

Eighty-eight percent (88%) of distributed enterprises either currently deploy SD-WAN today or plan to do so within the next 12 months with expected benefits of improved application performance, better access to cloud services, improved network security and reduced operational costs -to name a few.

With startups and incumbent network infrastructure vendors introducing products, the number of solutions on the SD-WAN market is exploding, and Tier 1 and 2 service providers are getting into the game by

partnering with leading vendors.

All this sounds great but we wanted to get a better understanding of just how easier this technology makes the job of network operations. We worked with Enterprise Management Associates (EMA) and uncovered the skinny on SD-WAN. Read on to learn more.

Recent Enterprise Management Associates (EMA) research found that:

• 44% of corporate traffic is public cloud related

• 55% of enterprises prefer to connect remote sites

directly to the public cloud via the internet

• 83% of enterprises are adding more sites to their

WAN

• 84% report growth in endpoints connected to the

network at remote sites

• 74% of organizations are replacing MPLS with the

internet as primary remote-site WAN connection

Enterprise WAN Transformation is Real

But MPLS will persist

• Changeover from MPLS to internet affects only 45% of sites• Forwarding policies still require MPLS for certain apps

42% early SD-WAN adopters express concerns about managing

VNFs after consolidation of their remote site infrastructure

37% are concerned about SD-WAN intelligence making

automated traffic forwarding decisions for them

33% are worried about the need for onsite IT staff to manage

new SD-WAN infrastructures

32% stress the concern for unified performance monitoring of

SD-WAN and legacy WAN technologies

Top Operational Challenges of SD-WAN“As network teams add more monitoring and troubleshooting tools, they become less effective at network problem detection and their networks become less stable.” - Enterprise Management Associates (EMA)

As SD-WAN supports the migration of critical applications to the cloud, network monitoring tools must provide insights into these new architectures.

It is recommended that network operations adopt a comprehensive and unified approach to managing traditional WAN and SD-WAN environments that offers extended visibility into both and enables end-to-end network operations.

It is essential for network operations to trace the root cause of performance problems to the cloud provider, the service provider network, or the internal enterprise for reduced service disruptions.

Recommendations for Successful SD-WAN Operations

Top Operation Benefits of Comprehensive and Unified SD-WAN Monitoring

CA’s SDN relationship mapping addresses concerns with VNF management

CA Performance Management is designed to monitor and visualize relationships among network elements (physical, virtual and logical), rather than just monitoring individual device metrics.

This visibility is important because it enables network operations to understand how suboptimal conditions with one network element impacts other elements within the deployed service.

Top Operation Benefits of Comprehensive and Unified SD-WAN Monitoring

CA validates the traffic decisions made by SD-WAN intelligence

CA Performance Management provides insight into the individual provider networks that SD-WAN technology abstracts for hybrid WAN connectivity.

The solution validates the routing and forwarding decisions made by SD-WAN and correlates application performance issues with the offending service provider network.

These new monitoring capabilities remove the complexity inherent in SD-WAN connectivity abstraction and validate the forwarding decisions of an intelligent SD-WAN solution.

Top Operation Benefits of Comprehensive and Unified SD-WAN Monitoring

CA enables easy monitoring and management of SD-WAN technologies

It is imperative that organizations use existing experience, processes and workflows to take on the complexity that comes with any new technology.

CA Performance Management offers one converged operational user interface (UI) providing deep visibility (traffic, flow, trends, performance, fault, systems, apps) across traditional and modern networks.

Quick health indicators and intuitive visualizations enable all level help desk staff and NOC engineers easy troubleshoot of complex SD-WAN infrastructures to minimize service disruptions.

Top Operation Benefits of Comprehensive and Unified SD-WAN Monitoring

CA delivers unified monitoring of SD-WAN and traditional WAN

CA Performance Management removes the swivel chair approach to monitoring new technologies.

The solution automatically adds SD-WAN tabs to existing dashboards, allowing operations to manage traditional WAN and SD-WAN technologies with the same workflows and processes they use with their existing environment.

This functionality easily addresses the concerns about unifying management of SD-WAN and traditional WAN infrastructure.

Conclusions

“CA continues to expand its network monitoring capabilities through a converged platform for improved end-to-end visibility across traditional

network technologies and the latest SDN architectures.”- Enterprise Management Associates (EMA)

While many enterprises view SD-WAN as a transformational technology, they are uncertain that their existing network monitoring tools can validate this improvement and manage this complex infrastructure.

And early adopters of SD-WAN have identified several top management concerns and should be aware of each of these challenges as they evaluate their network monitoring tools for SD-WAN.

CA Technologies offers one of the most scalable and comprehensive approaches to unified monitoring of performance of SD-WAN and traditional WAN technologies.
