The Sloan-Hendrix Elementary / Middle School Newsletter No. 105 April, 2009 SCHOOL NEWS Mrs. Wallis - Middle School All of Mrs. Wallis’s fifth-sixth-and sev- enth- grade classes have successfully complet- ed their third nine weeks feature trade books. After getting overwhelmingly better Renlearn scores each class celebrated in various ways. The fabulous fifth grade completed the book Philip Hall Likes Me, I Reckon Maybe by Bette Greene, an Arkansas author. The setting of the book was in Randolph and Lawrence counties. Because the main characters had an old-fash- ioned picnic and showed cattle in their county fair, Mrs. Wallis treated the students with a picnic in the park and let them enjoy sitting in on a grooming clinic being taught by the Sloan- Hendrix agriculture instructor, Joe Wallis. Mrs. Wallis’s homeroom sixth-grade class completed the Newberry Award-win- ning book Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech. The message of the book was the importance of family and cherishing the time had with parents. This class chose to honor their moth- ers. With little assistance from Mrs. Wallis, the students invited their parents to their room for the class period. Mrs. Wallis was so blessed to observe the love each one had for their parent and would like to express her personal thanks for the parents taking time out from their day to be there. Bud Not Buddy was the other Newberry Award book that the sixth grade completed. The setting of this book was in curing the 1930’s Depression Era and was about a young boy searching for his father. Because he visited a shanty town and talked of riding the rails, Mrs. Wallis ordered the PBS documentary “Riding the Rails” and the students enjoyed learning about the more than 250,000 children that took to the rails during the depression. Also in this particular class, everyone had en- joyed listening to big band music and learning about the people from the song lyrics as they studied poetry. The seventh-grade class read a very interesting book by a Tulsa native, S.E. Hinton. The setting of the book The Outsiders was on the east side of Tulsa in the early 1960’s, and the main characters were called Greasers because of the great amount of oil used in their hair. The overall message of the book was to show teenagers that everyone has problems and fighting is never the answer. The school’s fantastic counselor, Mrs. Shara Phares, visited the class in the last week of the book with some planned activities to enforce the message of the book. The class members expressed to Mrs. Wallis that it was one of the most meaningful classes they had ever attended. Thanks, Mrs. Phares. The final activity was “Outsider’s Day”. Kaitlin Briner, a member of the class and the granddaughter of Mrs. Nancy Tate and the late Randall Tate, along with her mother Ms. Kellie Tate Briner, brought two restored hotrods to the school for a great photo “op”. Many of the Quilting CrittersThird and fourth grade gifted/talented students with the help of the Imboden Extension Homemakers Club worked together to piece various quilt block designs such as; Road to Oklahoma, Saw Tooth Star, Double Z, Star Variation, and Clay’s Flyfoot. Students participating were: Kailey Abel, Malcolm Finley, Marlie Hufstedler, D.J. Rojas, Jacob Smith, Taylor Bowen, Kierce Due, Karmyn Gray, Chasaty Malone, Cody Ponder, MaKenzie Rone and Caitlin Waddell. EHC members assisting were: Raye Henderson, Clara Keech, Janet Latham, Liz Marbry, Marsha Onley, Leona Pecoraro, Ruby Reese, Christine Sullivan, and Sally VanWinkle. It was an enriching learning experience for all that participated.

SCHOOL NEWSMrs. Wallis - Middle School

All of Mrs. Wallis’s fifth-sixth-and sev-enth- grade classes have successfully complet-ed their third nine weeks feature trade books. Because the main characters had an old-fash-ioned picnic and showed cattle in their county fair, Mrs. Wallis treated the students with a picnic in the park and let them enjoy sitting in on a grooming clinic being taught by the Sloan-Hendrix agriculture instructor, Joe Wallis.

Mrs. Wallis’s homeroom sixth-grade class completed the Newberry Award-win-ning book Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech. The message of the book was the importance of family and cherishing the time had with parents. This class chose to honor their moth-ers.

Also in this particular class, everyone had en-joyed listening to big band music and learning about the people from the song lyrics as they studied poetry.

The school’s

fantastic counselor, Mrs.

Many of the

students had dressed in the period clothing for the pictures, which made the experience even more memorable. Thank you, Ms. Briner and Mrs. Tate, for making such a moment possible for the class. It is the tangible experiences that cement the learning process.

All of Mrs. Wallis’s classes will be read-ing various books from the World War II era in the coming weeks as they make final prepara-tions to face the final challenge of the year, Benchmark exams. Please support the students during the coming weeks with your prayers.Mrs. Dail - 7th-grade

The 2009 pee-wee basketball season at Sloan-Hendrix saw the teams getting big wins and learning valuable teamwork lessons. To play pee-wee basketball you must first be as hard-working in the classroom as you are on the basketball floor. Meaning, that you must have good grades and top notch behavior. This year’s group of 5th and 6th graders did just that and more, maintaining excellent classroom grades and winning lots of games on the court. The 5th grade girls team this season consisted of Jessie Powell, Brittany Gosha, Madison Luffman, Carla Mitchell, Taylor Grant, Jade Hickman, and Felicia Collins. The 5th grade boys were Landon O’Reilly, Payton Oliver, Cordell Powers, Zack Taylor, Dylan Clark, Patrick Ponder, and Dylan Wood. The boys also had a little help from a few more than willing 4th grade players: Colby Johnson, Tyler Murphy and Colton Dail. Playing on the 6th grade girls team this year was: Natalie Gipson, Ariel Malone, Jordan Vaughn, Breanna Gosha, Destiny Dail, Kristin Henson, Hannah Coats, Shanay Richey Ashlyn Hayes, and Whytney Caton. The 6th grade boys were Kyle Murphy, Paul Hein, David Ward, Quinton Freeman, and Ethan Orrick. All of the teams had a wonder-ful season, learning a lot along the way. I am very proud of all of the teams and honored to be their coach.

One final note, the Lawrence County Track Meet will be May 5th this year at Hoxie. In the case of rain the meet will be May 7th. All 4th through 6th grade students are encouraged to try-out and participate.

Student CouncilThe Sloan-Hendrix Middle School Student Council serves as a service organization for

the Middle and Elementary Schools. During the school year the group works to encourage school spirit as well as supporting school projects. This year the members served as greeters for the Open House, packed “snack” bags for the teachers to have during the fall P/T Confer-ences, collected canned items for the Christmas boxes and also helped prepare the boxes for delivery. On Valentine’s Day the Student Council assisted the Parent Center in presenting each student in K-4th grades with a flower. Students assisted with the County Spelling Bee in February and in March were volunteers for the Book Fair held in the Elementary Library. In appreciation for allowing the students to interrupt classes, be late for classes and for partici-pating in SC activities, the students made “goody” bags for the Middle and Elementary Staff.

Students serving in the Council are, Breanna Gosha, President; Jessie Powell, 2nd Vice President; Mary Ponder, Secretary and Hannah Bowen, Reporter. Class Representatives are: 7th grade-Kaitlin Briner, Aaron Meyer, Jesse Hufstedler and Christian Capps; 6th grade- Des-tiny Dail,Lindsey Goodsell, Paul Hein and Kyle Murphy; 5th grade-Brittany Gosha, Landon O’Reilly and Michael McAfee. Members at large are Stormy Weiand, Zack Taylor, Madisyn Salard and Quinton Freeman.
