Design a Smart Doll

• Ambient -- the Doll ( can be treated as a aesthetic decoration)

• Bluetooth -- small package, mobility, simplicity, and power effective

• Light / Sound -- the methods to drag human attention

System Requirements• Hardware

-- a MCU (for I/O control)

-- a CRS bluetooth module (RF, baseband, SPP stack)

-- some LEDs

• Software-- a simple program for MCU

-- Applications on Windows or WinCE

• Coating (packaging) -- developing-- a human mimic coating made of materials that can deliver an ambient light effectively

Application I

• MSN/Skype figuresscenario:

-- SD activated when users (with a bluetooth equipment) are approaching.

-- when the remote peer is online, the device beam a RF to SD to light up the GREEN LED; if off-line, light up RED LED

-- when the remote peer sends a messages, GREEN LED starts to blink.

Application II

• Social care net-- construct a care net sensor network ( not within the domain of this proposal)

-- use Smart Doll to reflect one’s health condition

-- GREEN light for a good health

-- RED light for a health warning

Application III• Child safe net

-- if child (with a SD) is out of the range, sends a warning message

• Security lock -- if SD is out of the range, lock the computer

• Internet agent -- mapping the SD to a special event in Internet (weather, stocks, e-mail…)

• Reminder -- if a pre-defined event is approaching, SD light an ambient light for reminding

• Home security -- equip SD with a motion sensor and place it in the living room. Once it detects an unexpected motion, sends a warning message

• Ambient Thermograph -- equip SD with a thermal sensor and reflect the temperature with its light

Future Work

• Refine the doll and shrink the package size (60H*20W*20L mm)

• Some more samples (50 pcs) for field trial. Collect users feedback and evaluate the possibility of mass production

• Implement the back-end sensor environment for social care net

• A distributed Smart Doll net
