Principles of Polymer Rheology – Applications toRigid PVC

Zeena Cherian, Arkema, Inc.

Abstract:The study of flow behavior or rheology plays a major role in elu-cidating the structure, properties and processing behavior ofpolymers. In this talk, the principles of rheology and key rheol-ogy techniques that can be applied to all polymers includingPVC will be discussed. The topic will primarily focus on smallamplitude oscillatory rheology and extensional rheology andhow utilization of these techniques can lead to better optimiza-tion and understanding of common polymer processing issues. Bio:Zeena Cherian is a Senior Research Engineer working in theRheology and Microprocessing group in Arkema’s Analyticaland Systems Department at their R&D Campus located in Kingof Prussia, PA. She has two Masters Degrees: an M.S. degreein Materials Science and Engineering from New Jersey Instituteof Technology (NJIT) and M.Tech in Polymer Technology fromUniversity of Science & Technology, India. Before joiningArkema, she worked at the University of Medicine & Dentistry,NJ conducting research in the area of thermosetting resins usedin dentistry and as a Staff Scientist at the Center for AdvancedMaterials at Rutgers University. Her current work involves using rhe-ology to study polymer structure and end-use properties viadynamic mechanical analysis, melt & fluid rheology, and non-linearrheology. While at NJIT, she received the Hoechst CelaneseOutstanding Student Award of Excellence in Academics andResearch. She is an active member of ASTM committee D20,the Society of Rheology and the Polymer Processing Society.

President’s Message

My Favorite Things

“Raindrops on roses and whiskers onkittens, bright copper kettles and warmwoolen mittens, brown paper packagestied up with strings, these are a few ofmy favorite things”

These are the opening lyrics to “My Favorite Things” writtenby Oscar Hammerstein II for the Sound of Music. Many ofus have favorite things, and while I’m quite certain that noneof the above meet my criteria for a favorite thing, one eventI look forward to is our joint meeting with our Rutgers Chap-ter. It is one of “My Favorite Things” of our calendar year.

This year is no exception, and we are hoping to have an ex-citing night that in addition to our speakers will also featurea student poster session highlighting the projects the Rut-gers students are working on. It will be our third meetingwith the Rutgers Chapter, and we will again have a chanceto talk with the students about careers in plastics and poly-mer engineering. Most importantly we get the chance toinvest in the future of our industry thru investing in peoplewho want to and will make a difference.

In this day and age of entitlements, handouts, and takingthe easy way out, it is refreshing to see a group of high qual-ity individuals committed to the pursuit of excellence anddoing things right. Join us and see first hand what the SPEis really about. You will be glad you did.

Mark Lavach

Recently, students in the Rutgers Universitychapter of SPE attended a career advise-ment session run by Dr. Rick Lehman, chairof the Rutgers’ Materials Science and En-gineering department. Dr. Lehman spokeabout the kind of skills needed for a careerin polymers, and why the topics covered inrelated classes will prove helpful for jobs in

research or industry. He also discussed how to find employ-ment in the polymers field, and offered general tips on search-ing for work.

The student chapter’s next major event will be to attend thesection meeting held at Rutgers on March 27. Chapter mem-bers are excited to interact with polymer professionals andhope to learn about the field by talking to them.
