KG Beach Sports DayFun, sun, sand and smiles! These words best describe the KG Beach Sports Day!KG Beach Sports Day was a day to remember. Our students arrived eager and ready for the day. They enjoyed every challenge presented and completed every task and obstacle with great enthusiasm. From the obstacle course, which not only challenged their speed, endurance and physical abilities, but also their reasoning and positioning skills, through to the many other activities including: sprint race, number collection race, bean bag toss, collecting the most numbers in order, tug of war, to just mention a few, right up to the sand castle challenge. Our students had fun, great fun! We concluded our exciting day with a lovely picnic on the beach and some fun-filled playtime. What a lovely end to an extraordinary day.

Teddy B ear P icnic

The KG department at Sohar International School holds an annual Teddy Bear Picnic.

On this special day, every child is allowed to bring a teddy bear from home to join them on this picnic. Before we get on the bus, every child's face is painted. The students also made their own bear hat to wear during the picnic to protect them from the sun.

There were lots of activities for our students, such as the parachute, find the bear, draw a bear, racing with a bear, throwing a bear and colouring the bear.

The teachers surprised the students with a flapjack in the shape of a bear and even a drop of honey to make it sweeter!

KG Taste Lesson

Upon arrival in our class, we found plates of food waiting for each of us. Immediate excitement and eagerness to start eating had us all scrambling to our seats! Another fun Science lesson awaited us! We tickled our taste buds with a sensory lesson exploring the three ?S? tastes: sweet, salt and sour. Given the opportunity to explore our first taste sensation, our teacher gave us a white spice called salt to taste. After which we had to find examples on our plates that tasted similar. Crisps, popcorn and the salty biscuits of course! The next taste had us all laughing at each other?s weird and funny faces we pulled, while tasting the lemon and lime slices! The sour rainbow sweets had the best reaction by far, including our teacher's! The best taste was left for last: sweet! Who doesn?t like chocolate, cake, honey biscuits, ice cream cone sweets, bananas and sugar? We definitely liked it best! After our taste buds had their fun we took turns sorting all the foods we tasted in a taste graph on the big white-board. The final step, emphasizing what we learned, we drew funny faces next to the three food examples, earning us each a gold star!

Disability Awareness Week

?Disability is a matter of perception. If you can do just one thing well, you?re needed by someone.? - Martina NavratilovaSIS hosted a week long program to inform and educate our learners as part of the celebration of World Disability Awareness Week. Our aim and objective was the awareness of disabilities and to cultivate empathy and erase misconceptions with regards to disabilities.According to a UNICEF report, children are often excluded from educational interventions for various reasons. Parents may be ashamed and therefore reduce the child?s participation in social and educational activities, or they do not recognize the value of education for children with disabilities. A study has found that a third of disabled children?s parents did not support them going to school.?A disability doesn?t have to be a social barrier. Good etiquette begins with inclusion, not exclusion.? - Robert M. HenselEach day we learned about a different disability, i.e. blindness, deafness and hearing loss, mutism and physical disabilities.Students had the opportunity to look at appropriate videos and we spoke about the difficulties disabled people encounter in their daily lives. Students could act out different scenarios to experience some of these difficulties in order to learn how we could help and support someone with a disability. We concluded the week?s activities with an animation video to show the emotional pain a disabled person encounters when he/she is excluded from a group or bullied because of a disability. The students also learned how to say ?Oman? in sign language.

Math Genius Award Ceremony

Each year the children participate with so much enthusiasm that it?s actually sad that there can only be 1 winner. Lots of dedication and hard work goes into preparing the children for this from the teachers as well as the parent?s side. With the knock-out round there are about 35 children in each grade group and we are proud of all of them. The final round asks for quick thinking and focusing under a little bit of stress, getting the answer in a short time. We want to congratulate all our winners in all the grades. Well done!

Our senior boy?s basketball team played against ABIS for their final game of the season and managed to beat them for the second time in a row. What made this result an even more impressive one was that we were missing a few of our key players on the day and still came out on top with a score of 50-45. Thank you to all the players, coaches and supporters for a special and extremely successful season.

The grade 4-12 students all participated in the annual Sports Day. Great fun was had by all and it was wonderful to see so many students arriving on the day to take part in the various events and having a good time while doing so.

Leadership Cam pThe girl?s leadership camp was amazing! We had a lot of fun on the bus while traveling to the camp. When we arrived at the camp, we had to make our own flag and choose a name for our group. After that, we had lunch. All the meals were really tasty.

We had a lot of activities planned for the day like; treasure hunt, minefield maneuver, and the wooden plank. The best part was when we prepared a play about friendship and leadership. We also had to make up a war cry for our team.

After dinner, there was a surprise for us. It was Zuman?s birthday and we sang for her and had some cake. We had a campfire and we were allowed to roast marshmallows over the flames. We headed to our tents, some of us were tired and some wanted to stay awake. In the end we all fell asleep because we had quite a busy day!

The next day, we got up and had a lot of fun with more planned activities. We got to build tents, do a science experiment, build sand castles, balance on planks and much more. My favourite part was the beach, the weather was lovely!

After that we ate lunch, packed our bags, cleaned our tents and headed back home. We were so sad to leave because we had such a great time making new friends from As Seeb International School and Azzan Bin Qais International School.

The camping trip to Muscat was fantastic!

Once we arrived there, we were informed about the camp?s rules and what will happen next. We learnt how to follow instructions and to be responsible for our belongings. Then we were ready to prepare our sleeping bags and went back to the assembly point where students were split into two teams. Back to our tent, the students named the team and sang a war cry.

We had supper and grilled some marshmallows on the camp fire. Later on, we competed in the treasure hunt, and it was terrific!

The next day, we went back to the assembly point and had breakfast and completed a set of challenges, such as the Science fire, build a tent, making a sand castle battle, nuclear transport, walking the plank and finally, the mental challenge. In the end, we had a chance to swim in the sea, and it was loads of fun.

I am thankful for the opportunity given to us to participate in such an event and to the excellent teachers who accompanied us during the camp and looked after us with love and care.

SI S Car ing and Helping Those in Need

In the first semester, our students planned and put together a Bake Sale Day as part of their Enabling Enterprise lessons. The idea was to donate the day?s proceeds to a charity. On 31 January, students from Grade11B visited the Takafol Charity Centre and donated 250 OMR.
