15th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle A) A Sunday Reflection

A sower went out to sow (Mt 13:3)

The parable proposed in today’s Gospel appears also in St. Mark and St. Luke; and as we read or listen to it, we are tempted to think of what kind of soil is in our heart. Whether it is the path where the birds eat it up, or the rocky soil, or the thorns; or whether by the grace of God it is good soil that produces an abundant harvest. And it is good that we examine our hearts this way.

But today instead let us look at it from the perspective of the missionary. We are all sent by the Lord to plant the Gospel. The seed is the Word of God, and we are sent to sow it far and wide. We do not have to choose the soil where it is planted; our mission is to plant. The only way the seed does not produce fruit is if we keep it to ourselves. The Word of God has the power to transform every soil, every heart. He gives generously, abundantly, and we are the means by which He gives.

St. Paul says in the 1st Letter to the Corinthians that it is God who causes the growth (3:6). Let us go out and boldly sow the seed of the Word, and ask the Lord that it may produce abundant fruit. God bless you.

Domingo 15o del Tiempo Ordinario (Ciclo A)

Reflexión Dominical Salió un sembrador a sembrar (Mt 13,3).

La parábola que nos propone el evangelio de hoy aparece también en San Marcos y San Lucas, y al leerla nos viene la idea de pensar qué clase de terreno es nuestro corazón. ¿Será acaso el camino donde se la comen los pájaros; el suelo rocoso o las espinas? ¿O será tierra buena que produce una cosecha abundante? Y es bueno que hagamos este ejercicio.

Pero hoy quisiera que la escuchemos con un corazón misionero. El Señor nos ha enviado a sembrar el Evangelio. La semilla es la Palabra de Dios y nuestra misión es regarla ampliamente. No tenemos que escoger el suelo en que la sembramos; nuestra misión es sembrar. La única forma en que la semilla no produce fruto es si la guardamos. La Palabra de Dios tiene poder para transformar todo terreno, todo corazón. Él da generosamente, abundantemente, y nosotros somos el medio que utiliza para dar.

San Pablo, en la 1a Carta a los Corintios dice que es Dios quien hace crecer (3,6). Salgamos pues con valor a sembrar la semilla de la Palabra y pidamos al Señor que produzca fruto abundante. Que Dios los bendiga.

Msgr. John Glorie was ordained May 21, 1960 for the Archdiocese of Miami. In the early years, he served as parochial vicar at St. Anthony in Fort Lauderdale, Corpus Christi in Miami and Holy Family in North Miami and as chaplain and director at Boystown and as associate director of the Catholic Service Bureau (Catholic Charities). Msgr Glorie was assistant supervising principal at Immaculata-La Salle High School in Miami (1966-1968) while serving as parochial vicar at St. Hugh, where he would later serve as pastor (1973-1982). From 1982 to 1989, Msgr. Glorie was pastor of Little Flower in Coral Gables. He then served as administrator of San Pablo in Marathon (1989-1991) and pastor of St. Elizabeth of Hungary in Pompano Beach (1991-2001). He retired in 2001 and now helps at St. Henry Church in Pompano Beach. The community of St. Hugh thanks Msgr. Glorie for his years of service among us and congratulates him on reaching this milestone. Ad multos annos!

Ordenado sacerdote para la Arquidiócesis de Miami el 21 de mayo de 1960, Mons. John Glorie sirvió como vicario parroquial en St. Anthony en Fort Lauderdale, Corpus Christi en Miami y Holy Family en North Miami. También fue capellán y director de Boystown y director asociado del Catholic Service Bureau (Caridades Católicas). Además fue director asistente en Immaculata-La Salle High School de 1966 a 1968, al mismo tiempo que fue vicario parroquial aquí en St. Hugh, donde más tarde nos serviría como párroco desde 1973 hasta 1982. The Brown Scapular

“Whosoever dies clothed in this habit shall not suffer eternal fire.” Our Lady of Mt. Carmel to St. Simon Stock, 1251

A SCAPULAR is a sign of commitment to the contemplative life. [Originally] a large overgarment that protected the monk’s tunic while he was working, the word scapular comes from the Latin word for shoulder, scapula.

Scapulars are cloth items usually worn over the shoulders; and, like medals, they come in many varieties. [But the best known is] the brown scapular. [When “invested” with it] using prayers approved for that purpose, [one] is enrolled in the Carmelite order [which] traces its origins back to the Old Testament prophets Elijah and Elisha.

The Carmelite order has always cultivated a particular and intense devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and it is her image that usually appears on the brown scapular. It’s said that, in the thirteenth century, she appeared to a Carmelite named St. Simon Stock…, and she told him that those who died “clothed in this habit will never suffer eternal fire.”

Pope John Paul II said that the scapular is powerful precisely because it is a “habit” in every sense of the word, both a uniform and a pattern of good belief and good behavior. Catholics [are] permitted to wear a scapular medal in place of a cloth scapular, and many people do. The scapular medal bears the image of Jesus’ Sacred Heart on one side, and the image of Mary on the other.

EL ESCAPULARIO es señal de compromiso con la vida contemplativa. [Originalmente] era una prenda que protegía la túnica del monje mientras trabajaba. Escapulario proviene del latín scapula, hombro.

Los escapularios son artículos de tela que se ponen sobre los hombros; como las medallas, hay muchos de ellos. [El más conocido es] el escapulario del Carmen. [Cuando ha sido “impuesto”] usando las oraciones aprobadas para ello, quedamos inscritos en la orden del Carmelo, que traza sus orígenes a los profetas Elías y Eliseo en el Antiguo Testamento.

La orden del Carmen siempre ha cultivado una devoción particular e intensa a la Santísima Virgen y su imagen aparece en el escapulario. Se cuenta que en el siglo 13, la Virgen se apareció al Carmelita San Simón Stock...y le dijo que quien muriera “vestido con este hábito no padecerá el fuego del infierno”.

El papa Juan Pablo II decía que el escapulario es poderoso precisamente por ser un “hábito” en todo sentido de la palabra, tanto un uniforme como un modelo de fe y de vida. Se permite usar la medalla del escapulario en vez de uno de tela, y muchos católicos lo hacen. La medalla del escapulario tiene la imagen del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús de un lado, y la imagen de María en el otro.
