Bel Air United Methodist Church just celebrated our 235th birthday this past May. We’ve come a long way since 1782. The members of that first congregation wouldn’t recognize us by our building today – but I would expect that they would recognize us by our love – the way that we love God, the way that we love one another, and the way that we love the members of this community and beyond. We Love as Jesus Loves!

We are blessed to be in a position to be able to upgrade our audio/visual systems, and address some issues that have been on our “To Do List” for some time. The main thing on our list is the renovation of our pipe organ, which is greatly overdue; but the organ isn’t alone. There are some other things that we must do to preserve and protect the church, and some things that we’d like to do to enhance the worship experience. These include, but are not limited to:

• Smoke detection and monitoring for worship spaces• Sanctuary stained-glass protection• Sanctuary barrel lighting with LEDs• Equipment to record/stream services• Kiosks to view services throughout the facility• Rolling TV carts for classrooms• Washer/dryer for the kitchen• Children’s ministry space enhancements• Additional storage space• Homestead strategic plan

This September, we’ll be kicking off a capital campaign. A capital campaign is different from our annual stewardship campaign. An annual stewardship campaign funds the annual missions and ministries of our church. A capital campaign is above and beyond. When we ask for gifts to a capital campaign, we’re asking for gifts above and beyond the annual stewardship campaign.

Don’t groan yet. Anytime you make an improvement to your home, you feel good about it. Feel good about improvements that you make to your church as well. There have already been some generous gifts given. One faithful member recently gave $75,000.

What’s our fundraising goal? The minimum goal would be to raise $500,000. (The organ renovation alone will be approx. $265,000.) Above and beyond that, we could certainly do a lot of wonderful things. We’re not going to hire a fundraising company. I believe that we can do this on our own, with God’s help. I hope that the prospect of all of this is exciting to you.

Thank you for sharing in ministry with me!

CELEBRATING BAUMC STAFF JULY/AUGUST 2017

Dan Lampton

Dan became the Worship Tech Team Leader/Music Tech last year and says he is really enjoying his new job. He is responsible for providing sound and video support to enhance the worship service experience, providing tech support for the sanctuary worship services, coordinating the tech team schedules to ensure adequate support for the worship services and other special events, and monitoring equipment status to ensure it is available and ready when needed. Dan says he likes working with sound, music, and microphones - basically having control of all the sounds to make the worship service the best it can be! On Sunday mornings, you will find him behind the sound board in the balcony of the sanctuary or in McComas Hall.

He has been married to Deb for 35 years - and, yes, that is the same Pastor Deb Lampton that serves in a variety of ways in our children's and music ministries in our church. They have one daughter Taylor; she and her husband Michael live in Delaware where she is in her final step to complete her PhD.

Dan's favorite Bible scripture is Job 38:4-7 "Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone - while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?" And his favorite quotation is from Charles Mingus: “Making the simple complicated is commonplace; making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that's creativity.”

Dan likes music of all kinds and plays not only the guitar (which you most likely have heard at one of the worship services) but also plays the banjo, ukulele, and mandolin. He is intrigued with audio recording and even used to have a recording studio (but unfortunately that takes more space and time than he has now). And not surprising, he has a Bachelor of Sacred Music degree in Composition. When asked what inspires him, Dan's response was "anything done well" and those that create it - which comes from his interest in music but extends to everything. Thank you for your service and awesome contribution to our worship services Dan!

Penny Buranen

The Staff Parish Relations Committee wishes to welcome Penny Buranen, the church’s new bookkeeper, who began her job at BAUMC on February 27, 2017. Being a bookkeeper includes monthly financial reporting; timely recording of deposits and payments to vendors; processing payroll; advising the staff and volunteers on accounting procedures and proper recording of transactions; reconciling bank statements; assisting the CPA firm with the annual audit; etc. As if that were not enough, Penny also spends time answering the phones as needed. She is one busy lady! Penny has described the church staff as “friendly, caring, and helpful” as she has been learning the duties of her new job.

Penny was born in Orlando, Florida, the second oldest of three children (she has an older sister and a younger brother). She was raised in a loving, Christian home and fondly remembers attending church services every Sunday. Her Mom is a homemaker; and her Dad was a Vice President of Sales and retired early from Martin Marietta Corporation (now Lockheed Martin). Because of her Dad’s job, the family relocated to Lancaster, Ohio when Penny was about nine. They lived there for a few years before relocating to Bel Air in the early 1970s.

Penny’s hobbies include listening to and learning Christian songs, reading devotional books, and participating in small group studies. Penny has a lot of favorite Bible verses, but one that is important to her is "Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7). Penny rededicated her life to Christ last year and was baptized by immersion in September 2016. Penny says, “I've been so blessed in the past year, I want to share and pass on what I've learned to others.” As a result, she is passionate about volunteering her time to serve and help others both at BAUMC and in the community in general.

Penny just celebrated her birthday on June 9th. Happy birthday, Penny! We are very pleased to have you as a member of our staff!

CHILDREN AND FAMILY MINISTRIES JULY/AUGUST 2017

The Flamingos are out and about this summer. Kids and their families are flocking families of BAUMC to let them know they are loved. Don’t be surprised if some birds come your way this summer. To keep up with our activities, go to C4 Kids-BAUMC on Facebook.

Let’s meet at Keye’s Creamery for some ice cream and introduction to the Harry Moon Book series on July 22nd at 2 p.m. We will start with Book One “Wand-Paper-Scissors”. This is for kids 3rd grade and up. In this origin story, Harry Moon is up to his eyeballs in magic. In the small town of Sleepy Hollow where every day is Halloween night, his archenemy, Titus Kligore, has eyes on winning the annual Scary Talent Show. Harry’s sister, Honey Moon, says Harry needs better tricks, so he finds a new and better magic wand. Still, Harry has a tough job ahead of him if he is going to steal the crown. He takes a chance on a magical rabbit who introduces him to deep magic. Harry decides the best way forward is to “do no evil” while the battle to defeat Titus goes epic.

The Altar Guild Has A Place for You!

Do you think you could carve out one hour every four weeks? Could you find three hours once a year? Do you think you could enjoy private moments with God in the sanctuary?

These small requirements (and privileges) are all that is needed to serve our magnificent God….directly at His altar. The opportunity is there every time we prepare for the Sunday services.

The Altar Guild is looking for the “next generation” of Guilder. We find great satisfaction and honor in serving, preparing for the

worship celebration, decorating for festive holidays, helping maintain the sanctuary in good order. We carry on a precious tradition entrusted to us by a long line of ladies who have left behind handmade altar hangings, detailed guides, and pictures of past preparations; labors of love creating a rich tradition at BAUMC.

Talk with your friends and see if you all might be the ones God is inviting to serve Him. Call Kathy Frawley, 410-746-7417 or email [email protected] for more information.

Attention 5th - 7th Graders!

We will be recruiting for new acolytes for the coming school year. If your child is in 5th-7th grade and would be willing to serve once every 6 weeks, we would love to have them. There will be a notice of training toward the end of the summer. Call Kathy Frawley for more information at 410-746-7417.

Come visit our Library before you go on vacation!

We have many adult CDs and children’s DVDs to listen to as you travel, as well as our extensive book collection for your leisurely reading.

A few of our authors include: Max Lucado, Tim LaHaye (Left Behind Series), Jan Karon (Father Tim Novels), Neta Jackson (Yada Yada Prayer Group) , Beverly Lewis and Joyce Meyer

Authors that may interest our youth include: Denzel Washington, Melody Carlson, Mike Yorkey and Tim Tebon

BAUMC and United Way of Central Maryland are teaming up to provide school supplies to low-income families in Harford County. We will be collecting school supplies in a marked bin by the Welcome Center through August 18th. If you prefer, you can donate $7.00 for the purchase of a bundle school kit.

The kits are:

• Elementary School Kit which includes a 15" back pack, pencil case, pencil sharpener, glue stick, Crayons, eraser and (6) #2 pencils• Middle/High School Kit which includes a 17" back pack, pencil pouch, (2) yellow highlighters, (5) blue and black pens, eraser and (6) #2 pencils

Checks should be made payable to BAUMC with a notation in the memo line that reads "UW School Supplies". Cash or checks should be placed in an envelope addressed to Sandy Juchs. These can be placed in the dropbox next to the office door or in the offering plate at each service.
