The Spirit Of 97th Beach Masters News 97thtranscobeachmasters.wordpress.com Issue 2 February 2013 February is Black History Month By: Amanda Alley To celebrate Black History Month, I thought it would be great to share some facts that a not very well known. I found these on http://www.biography.com/tv/classroom/black- history-little-known-facts . So here they are: Fact #1 Artist Charles Alston founded the "306 Group", a club that provided support and apprenticeship for African-American artists during the 1940s. It served as a studio space for prominent African-American artists such as poet Langston Hughes; sculptor Augusta Savage; and mixed-media artist Romare Bearden. Fact #2 In 1938, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt challenged the segregation rules at the Southern Conference on Human Welfare in Birmingham, Alabama, so she could sit next to African- American educator Mary McLeod Bethune, whom she referred to as "her closest friend in her age group." Fact #3 Allensworth is the only California community to be founded, financed and governed by African-Americans. Created by Allen Allensworth in 1908, the town was built with the intention of establishing a self-sufficient, all-black city where African-Americans could live their lives free of racial discrimination. Fact #4 Jazz, an AfricanAmerican musical form born out of the Blues, Ragtime, and marching bands originated in Louisiana during the turn of the 19th century. The word Jazz is a slang term that at one point referred to a sexual act. I would list more, but there are too many for this format. If interested to read more please go to the website above. To celebrate Black History Month, I thought it would be great to share some facts that a not very well known. I found these on http://www.biography.com/tv/classroom/black-history-little-known-facts. So here they are: Fact #1

It served as a studio space for prominent African-American artists such as poet Langston Hughes; sculptor Augusta Savage; and mixed-media artist Romare Bearden. Fact #2

In 1938, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt challenged the segregation rules at the Southern Conference on Human Welfare in Birmingham, Alabama, so she could sit next to African-American educator Mary McLeod Bethune, whom she referred to as "her closest friend in her age group." Fact #3

Fact #4

Jazz, an African–American musical form born out of the Blues, Ragtime, and marching bands originated in Louisiana during the turn of the 19th century. Featured Soldier

SGT Jose Cardenas

Sgt. Cardenas is originally from California. He went to Basic Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and Advanced

Individual Training at Fort Eustis. He is a watercraft engineer.

He was assigned to 97th Transportation Company in May 2009. For the majority of the next four years he sailed on

the LCU 2011, the Chickahominy. He served as the 10- and 20-level engineer.

During that time, Sgt. Cardenas was deployed on two missions known as USARSO, which entailed delivering cargo

throughout the Caribbean for the Army’s southern command. He also participated in Joint Task Force Haiti, a

humanitarian mission after the earthquake in that country in early 2010.

Sgt. Cardenas left the LCU 2011 for four-month periods twice: once to go to the 20-level water craft engineer

school in 2011 and also last October to attend the 30-level school, which is also known as the Advanced

Leadership Course, or ALC. He graduated from ALC on January 24. While at the school he earned the Iron Soldier

award, given to the student with the highest physical training test score, and was named the Distinguished Honor

Graduate.

Sgt. Cardenas attended the NCO of the Quarter Board competition on January 28 and was named the NCO of the

quarter. His other military education includes the Warrior Leadership Course, which trains specialists to become

noncommissioned officers; and the Combat Lifesaver Course, a class that teaches soldiers first aid for combat

situations.

Besides his military education, Sgt. Cardenas also has a bachelor’s degree. His majors were philosophy and

journalism with a minor in political science. He worked as a newspaper reporter before joining the army. Sgt.

Cardenas’ future plans include getting a Masters Degree and possibly also a Ph.D.

His more immediate plans include going back on URSOUTH sometime in February. He enjoys sailing to islands and

countries in the Caribbean and Latin America.

SGT Jose Cardenas, pictured here with 1SG Perdue, received

both the Distinguished Honor Graduate and Iron Warrior

Awards when he graduated his 88L30 class on 24JAN13.

Pictures From The ARSOUTH Boats

They left for Florida on January 4th

And have been working hard everyday The boats are loaded up for Cuba. They left Florida for Guantanamo Bay Cuba on January 23

rd. They did arrive safely and are waiting

to return to Florida

Pictured is PFC Ethan Hickman aboard the LCU 2001

doing some vessel beautification while deployed in

support of ARSOUTH in Port Canaveral, FL.

Our soldiers have been hard at work with painting and

reorganizing the boats. This can mean long days for all.

At least we know they are working and not working on a

tan.

Valentine’s Day

A special thanks to the family of SPC Light. They sent

Christmas presents for the single soldiers that live in

the barracks. This was a wonderful Christmas surprise

that was much appreciated. Thank you so much for

your support.

Love Is In The Air

Well it is that time of year again. Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching on February 14th. So let’s talk gifts for that special

someone. Usually we give gifts of stuffed animals, jewelry, candy, cards and flowers, but did you know that there are some

really great unique gifts out there. My favorite gift by far has been a Message in a Bottle. It’s also the perfect gift for or from

our soldiers here in the boat field. I have received 3, myself and my daughter has received one. She was totally in love with it.

My husband found them on this website: http://www.timelessmessage.com. There are other websites that offer these unique

gifts. Another one is http://messageinabottle.com.

Picking a great gift and surprising that special someone can be difficult sometimes. Try something different this year. If you did

a romantic dinner last year or every year, then try something new. Of course that can be difficult as well, but it’s the thought

that counts.

Since we have 2 boats that are deployed, why not make some cookies or send sweet treat for them to share. I know a couple

of us are already talking about sending some stuff. They won’t be back from Cuba till after Valentine’s Day, but we can send

things after they get back to Florida.

Get Together at Cheryl Morales’ House

On Saturday, February 9th, spouses of 97th Transportation that wish to come out and enjoy some social time, are

invited to a potluck brunch starting at 9:00am at the Morales’ (and bring the kids!) It will be a “sweet” time to

socialize, enjoy some delicious food, exchange recipes, do some crafts with the kids and celebrate Valentine’s Day a

little early! Those interested in coming, please RSVP to either Cheryl Morales (757-509-1074) or Amanda Alley (757-

660-2072) and let them know what special entrée you will be preparing. The Morales live at 730 Bunker Hill Circle in

Newport News. See you there!

Top 5 Ways It’s To Be A Military Family You are all familiar with David Letterman’s trade mark “The Top Ten List”. Well here’s the Top Five Ways “It’s Like to be a Military

Family”. We are sure after reading this you will relate - enjoy!

#5. Military homes are always Open House for fellow soldiers and their families.

(Open house for soldiers not only during the holidays, but also during those times when a they need a place to stay – perhaps

deploying and having a week or two lapse between giving up their rental and leaving for their assignment.)

#4. We know how to pack real good!

(With all those deployments, 97th Trans. soldiers know how to pack!)

#3. We have friends from all around the world.

(Hawaii, Panama, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Germany and more!)

#2. We know the real understanding of a family reunion!

(There is just nothing that words can explain about the emotions felt when the reunion of our families occur each time Mom or Dad

returns home from being gone six months or a year!)

AND THE #1 WAY “IT’S LIKE TO BE A MILITARY FAMILY” …

#1. In most cases, it’s the military spouse who does the ironing and sewing for the household. (Thank you U.S. Army!)
