Alice Production What a wonderful production the College community was treated to recently with Alice. The professionalism and commitment demonstrated by our students, certainly came two fruition as they worked with their dedicated teachers through weeks of rehearsals culminating ting in a dress rehearsal performance for St Paul's and two evening performances. A huge congratulations to cast crew and organisers who worked with Mrs Usher and her team to stage such a magnificent event. Additional thanks must go to our dedicated group of FOSLs who assisted with adding that extra special feel with their "tea party" food for patrons. NAPLAN results The College NAPLAN results have arrived and were generally very pleasing, with some of our best results across the board since 2009. The Year 9 students demonstrated very strong improvement on past results, achieving 20-30 points above National Standard on most tests and Year 7 results also indicate that we have some strong indicators for future improvement, with particularly strong results achieved in both Reading and Persuasive Writing. The College, as an entire staff, will now work with these results to critique our learning programs and ensure continued improvement into the future. Individual student reports will be posted home shortly, when staff have had some time to review the results more fully. STEAM Visitors to the College last week would have been forgiven for thinking that we were running one big Science Fair, with students in Years 7-10 showcasing their hard work on their STEAM projects. I was amazed, as I believe were our visiting judges, at the depth of inquiry and research evident in the students' work and I know that Miss Loftus and her Science team are extremely proud of their efforts. The demonstration of scientific knowledge which students were able to integrate into technology, art or research proposals was impressive and I would like to congratulate all students on their efforts. Please do come along to the KSEN Astronomy Night this evening from 6pm to see the shortlist of prize winners and do some star gazing! SMS system for absentees Recently, the College has commenced an SMS absentee system. Where a student is not in class, an SMS is sent to parents to confirm the absence. Parents can explain this absence via return email to the College, as a written explanation is required for all absences, or contact the College directly by telephone only if they believe there to be an error. Year 7 Interviews Interviews for prospective Year 7 students for 2016 are progressing well, with a significant number of applications currently being processed. It is important for the College to have an accurate picture of our total numbers for next year so that adequate planning can take place. If you are aware of families wishing to enrol their student for next year, please encourage them to do so early. The College has a comprehensive transition program, including the requirement of incoming standardised testing, school visits and Orientation Day and we would like all new students to have the opportunity to participate in this program, meaning that interviews must be completed shortly.

Enrolments and Exiting the College For families who may be considering enrolling in other year groups, our current Year 7 and 9 cohorts are full at present and families should also be aware that offers of places are made based upon our enrolment policy, available on our website. Wait lists also exist for year groups when they are full. Any families who are aware that they will not be continuing at the College next year are reminded that a full term's notice is required or the equivalent fees will be charged. Athletics This term has seen our students participate in many athletics events. Our College carnival was a very successful day and it was inspiring to see such committed participation from a large number of students. Particularly pleasing was the support and sporting behaviour shown within the Houses as several students supported their team mates to encourage them across the line at the end of difficult events. This type of behaviour is truly demonstrating the College values on many levels. Harding won the day as Athletics Champions for 2015, separated from the other houses by only a handful of points. Well done to all competitors! Last week, a group a students made the trek to Tom Price to compete in the Pilbara Athletics Carnival and equipped themselves very well, competing in a large number of events. Similarly, another group of students this weekend makes the journey to Perth to represent the College at the Associated Catholic Colleges (ACC) Carnival. We wish them well on their journey and in their events. More information later in the Spirit from Mrs Govender. Year 12 Events Year 12 students recently participated in their Retreat, led by Mrs Tittums. The day was well organised, enlightening and for some students, quite a reminder of where they currently are in life. Completing secondary schooling can be a turbulent time as students experience the stress of exams, the pressure of what the next step could be and the elation of Graduation. Our ATAR students are nearing their final school exams and should all be studying very hard. Parents are encouraged to keep lines of communication open during this time, as the next two and a half months are a very stressful period for our ATAR students. There are a number of upcoming events for Year 12 students after exams, including their final Assembly, Graduation Mass and Graduation Dinner. More information on these specific events will be posted home via letter to ensure that parents are up to date. Cyber Safety Sessions Recently, Robyn Rishani, a cyber safety presenter visited the College and presented on a number of topics. I was pleased to hear such positive feedback not only from students, but also personally from several parents. Whilst some of Robyn's messages may have concerned us as parents, as we become more fully aware of the impact our digital life can have, the information was important and valuable. It's certainly timely to remind ourselves that it can be a good time to re-evaluate the procedures we have at home in order to safe guard our children and perhaps the right time to check just what apps are on our children's phones and iPads. An excellent online resource for reviewing apps and any digital content is www.commonsensemedia.org - I encourage you to check it out!

Busy Bee! As you would have via last week's email, we have been forced to postpone our busy bee slightly. We still plan to hold this event, focussing on sprucing up of our gardens and high pressure cleaning of our paths, in order to improve the learning environment for our students. We will need lots of help on the day with shovels, wheelbarrows and pressure cleaners, so watch this space! Tutoring As parents would be aware, many of our teachers offer after school tutoring sessions. These sessions are published in the timetable, available on our website. It is important that parents understand that these sessions are for students to work with teachers on specific areas in which they need help, they are not a homework club, but are designed to create a small group environment where teachers are available for more detailed one-to-one tuition than may be possible in a daily classroom environment. From time to time, these sessions must be cancelled and the College will endeavour to give as much notice as possible in these instances. Students On Grounds Out Of School Hours It is becoming increasingly common to see students waiting on the school grounds for significant periods of time out of normal school hours. Please be aware that students should not be arriving at school prior to 8am and that school hours finish at 3.30pm. Unless students are remaining at school, for a specific purpose (such as CAD or tutoring), they should be collected promptly at the end of the school day. The College does not provide supervision for students outside normal school hours. Parents' assistance in this matter is appreciated. FOSL Cookbook of Harmony Cookbooks are still available from the front office at a cost of $10 and all proceeds go to FOSL. This is a great opportunity for families to get their hands on Mrs Marshall's Malteser Slice recipe or Mrs Gupta's famous Chickpea Curry Recipe! Thank You to Mrs Koekemoer Lastly, a very sincere thanks to Mrs Koekemoer, who has been most ably filling in for Mrs Antonucci whilst she has been on long service leave this past few weeks. Mrs Koekemoer has been able to keep our wheels turning smoothly, although I am sure that she will be pleased to see Mrs Antonucci return next week! Wishing all families a restful weekend Alanna Otway Principal

STRESS Whilst manning the role of Deputy in Mrs Antonucci’s absence for the last four weeks, one of the things that I noticed in my day-to-day dealing with students, is the level of stress experienced by a large proportion of our students. There are various reasons for this stress: upcoming examinations, uncertain future, homework incomplete, leaving assignments to the last minute, peer pressure, being included or excluded from groups, issues at home, to name but a few. With the Year 12s counting down the weeks until their graduation, and for some, their WACE examinations, I think it is timely to look at how stress can manifest itself before an exam. There are numerous websites and hundreds of articles out there on how to deal with stress, but I thought I’d just put a few things together for you. A little anxiety is not a bad thing if it acts as a motivation to prepare properly and to tackle the task with a determined approach. Symptoms of stress When someone is faced with increased pressure (in this case at exam time) their body can go into a ‘fight or flight’ response which releases increased amounts of adrenalin into the body. This can lead to various symptoms including:

Feeling cranky and irritable (increased yelling or crying, swearing, hitting) Feeling inadequate, negative self-talk, blaming Problems getting to sleep or not wanting to wake up Strongly beating heart, sweating Chest pains, nausea, trembling Habits such as nail biting and fidgeting Indecisiveness, going blank, confusion Losing touch with friends. Lower tolerance levels

Tips for Parents The best way to support your child during the stress of revision and exams is to make home life as calm and pleasant as possible. Don’t let your stress become their stress. It helps if other members of the household are aware that your child may be under pressure and that allowances should be made for this. If your child is given study leave in the run-up to exams, try to be at home as much as possible so that you can share a break and a chat together. Make sure there are plenty of healthy snacks in the fridge and try to provide good, nutritious food at regular intervals. Encourage your child to join family meals, even if it's a busy revision day - it's important to have a change of scene and get away from the books and computer for a while. Also, encourage your child to take regular exercise. A brisk walk around the block can help clear the mind before the next revision session. Try not to make too many demands on your child during exam time. Arguments are counter-productive and will only add unnecessary stress and distract from revision.

From the Deputy Principal

It's important to get a good night's sleep before an exam, so discourage your child from staying up late to cram. And make sure he or she eats a good breakfast on the morning of the exam. Throughout the run up to the exams and after it is important to reassure your child that no matter what results they receive, that there are other options or pathways to reach their goals. It may not be their first option but there is other ways to get the same qualification so be aware of the options should they not get their first choice. Give them as much encouragement and support during these times. Year 12’s last few weeks All Year 12’s have received a copy of their MOCK/Trial exam timetables and those sitting the WACE exams, have also received those timetables. Mock exams commence on Friday, 18th September and conclude on Friday, 25th September. The Mock exams take place here at the College, whilst the majority of the WACE exams will take place at Karratha Senior High School. Year 12 students, who are not sitting the exams, are not required to attend school during the exam times. With only a couple of weeks left, Year 12s are reminded that normal school rules apply in regards to school attendance, wearing the school uniform correctly, completion of assessment tasks and treating others and property with respect. A letter outlining the program and instructions for the Year 12s last few days will be emailed home. All that remains is for me to wish this wonderful group of young people every success with their future endeavours, be it study, work or travel. I have enjoyed seeing you grow and mature into the young adults that you have become. Mrs Helen Koekemoer Acting Deputy Principal

Blessings All,

What a busy term we have had so far here at St Luke’s College. The Year 12s and Year 8s have recently participated in their Retreat day and the Year 10s will attend their Retreat day in the last week of this term on Wednesday 23rd September.

What is a Retreat? A Retreat is a very special time. Students step out of the everyday routines of their lives and into a whole new way of thinking and acting.

What happens during a Retreat? The main thing students do is spend time getting in touch with their own hearts, and, when they take time out and listen to their hearts they usually discover that God is living there. Even if they haven’t been paying much attention to Him, God is there, waiting for them to notice Him, wanting them to love Him the way He loves each of us. During a Retreat students often discover things about their own lives that they may want to change. The Year 12 students attended Mass in the afternoon and their Retreat focused on their impending graduation from high school and what lies ahead for them after graduation. The Year 8 students attended Mass in the morning before heading to the retreat at the Frank Butler Centre. During the day they participated on a number of activities run by Mr Sharpe, Mrs Tittums, Mrs De Salve and Mrs Dalton. God Bless Mrs Rhondda Tittums Religious Education Co-ordinator

Welcome to this new addition to the St Luke’s newsletter. While school board meetings will not always coincide with newsletters we would like to take a regular opportunity to bring the school community up to date with matters being discussed at and worked on by the board. I would also like to encourage our school community to take the opportunity to provide feedback to the board on the issues covered and also on any other matters you feel the board should be aware of or consider – please use the email address we have set up for the board – [email protected] While individual NAPLAN results are still on their way and should be with us very shortly, the overall results for St Luke’s have shown some excellent improvements in standards across all areas for Year 9’s and the Year 7 results are also very encouraging. The school is currently exploring ways to better utilise the data received to tailor programs to assist individual students in any areas of weakness and also to identify areas that we need to concentrate on for students that are new to our school. Our Building sub-committee is working on identifying maintenance issues and developing maintenance plans for our school facilities. Some of you may have noticed the works done on the columns on the Nickol block during the last school holidays – as the school buildings are now almost 30 years old we will need to remain vigilant to identify developing issues and should you notice anything that you feel needs repairing, upgrading or updating please send us an email to let us know. The Building sub-committee is also working towards a gardens working bee to be held shortly. Unfortunately some issues with the reticulation to the garden beds were recently identified and it was decide that these needed to be repaired before we put time and effort into planting and landscaping. There will be plenty of tasks for the whole family at the working bee so please keep an eye out for the new date and come down for an hour or so to help make your child’s learning environment a more attractive one. Some of you may have seen the recent advert for a Deputy Principal. With the increased workload from our additional Year 7’s this year, the decision has been made to hire a second Deputy with each looking after 3 year groups from the beginning of next year. Interviews are due to take place over the next couple of weeks once applications close and we hope to be in a position to announce the successful applicant before the end of term 3. The Board would like to congratulate the cast, crew and teachers for the excellent Alice production two weeks ago. 2 sold out performances plus a show for the senior students at St Pauls – if you missed it, make sure you are first in line for future productions – they will be a must see. (No pressure Mrs Usher!) In the meantime prepare for the Quiz night at the end of October - - with FOSL’s excellent catering and attention to detail it will be another must attend event. I am attending the CEO School Board Conference in Perth next Friday to hear their vision on Catholic education going forward and how we can support continued improvement in the results achieved by our school community. The Board is also discussing the topic of fundraising and we encourage your feedback on this issue. The school does not currently have a policy on fundraising for extracurricular activities and this has resulted in some activities undertaking lots of fundraising and some very little.

From the Board

Page 11: The SPIRIT - stlukescollege.wa.edu.au · Bless those who persecute you: never curse them, ... and be sad with those in ... students this weekend makes the journey to Perth to represent

Given that we aim to be inclusive as a school and do our best to ensure that as many students as possible are able to participate in the extracurricular activities offered, the board believes that all students need to be engaged to the same extent when fundraising is undertaken.

To that extent we see that there are 3 main options when it comes to defining fundraising requirements.

1. A percentage (perhaps 30%) of the trip costs are required to be raised through fundraising and participation in fundraising is compulsory for students wishing to attend the activity. To commit to such levels of fundraising will also require the buy in of student’s families to help organise

2. activities and take the load off the teachers. 2. We continue to fundraise as we currently do – ad hoc with no real targets but the vision to

“reduce” the cost of the activity at least a little. 3. We recognise that fundraising is a large drain on everyone’s time and resources and that unless

option 1 is selected, the amount raised generally does not result in a significant reduction in cost. As a result fundraising is detrimental to the school and families other activities and should not undertaken. Families would need to meet the full cost of extracurricular activities.

The Board has a preferred position based on one of the three above options and has asked Mrs Otway to look at developing a school policy. However our position is based on the thoughts of just 8 parents out of our large school community. We therefore welcome your input and any comments you may have on the topic of fundraising, the above options or any other options that you may envisage. Your feedback will help us develop the best solution for the school so please take the time to drop us an email Roman Raudonikis Board Chair

Art it

Again! News from the Visual Arts Studio

Our studio in Nickol Block has been amass with colour and activity. Thank you to the dedication of our Set Design and Construction Team who worked tirelessly on Wednesday after school to produce the pieces for the production. This included giant toadstools, doors, brick walls, a forest, Mad Hatter’s tea set and beautiful columns. A remarkable effort from students and a group of dedicated parents too who ably assisted and even gave support on the two consecutive weekend working bees. A special mention also to the Metals Technology Team lead by Brett Parkes with Senior Students Marco, Dylan and Patrick and Tehani (Year 9) to realise the construction of the pieces. A thank you morning tea will be held in Nickol on Friday 11 September to celebrate the friendships made and our marvellous accomplishments. Well done, everyone!

Arts week was also marked by the opening of the St Luke’s College Annual Art Show. Have you seen it? The show features works by Year 7-12 students and is on display in the foyer of the Karratha Public library until the school holidays. Please pop down! There you will spot fabulous self-portraits in the style of our modern masters, paintings of Pilbara pooches, whimsical sculptural musical instruments and many fascinating finds. It really is a must-see.

Congratulations to Tahlia Banks and Ellie Oliver for selling their artworks at the recent Cossack Art exhibition. What a wonderful tribute to these young aspiring artists! In the interim, the Senior Arts students are busy producing their final productions. We wish them luck as they realize their extraordinary creative ideas. Our Year 10s have been busy sculpting this term producing works inspired by artists John Davis and Andy Goldsworthy. Their final pieces included installation pieces made from wire, mesh and found objects. They are now busy hand-building to make their own clay head studies as part of their studies of Aboriginal identity. We look forward to seeing their pieces as term ends.

CAD Cossack art excursion On the 5th of August, 23 Centre of Artistic Development students went to Cossack and had a look at the art that was being displayed for the Cossack Art Awards. There were many amazing paintings that used a variety of materials to create the spectacular pieces. One painting was even created by the lovely Monty, one of our amazing art

teachers. Her art work was of the dirt turn off in Dampier. She captured the area in extreme detail down to the last spec of dirt.

Our next activity was a portrait workshop taught by the 2014 Cossack Art Award winner, Joshua Cocking. The task was to paint a black and white painting using four different shades of grey. We had a black and white photo of a lady and we had to use the different shades to re-create the black and white photograph. Dark greys were used to create the dark spots of the photo and the lighter the face got on the photograph, the lighter shades we used. This took about an hour but was all worth every second. Josh had one of his most recent paintings in with him and it was absolutely spectacular because everyone didn’t know it was even a painting until we all got up close. The detail of the painting was amazing and was very well done. Josh had said it had taken him over four months to create this piece and was very happy with the result. All in all our day was amazing and we would like to thank Ms Nidd and Mr Parks for taking us all on this amazing trip to Cossack.

Keys for life Parent Workshop

On Wednesday the 26th August, Tania Neeson from SDERA conducted a Keys for Life Parent Workshop for all parents and students in Year 10. The workshop was to introduce parents to the Keys for Life programme that Year 10 students will be participating in. The Keys for Life programme helps prepare students for being road users as drivers of either motor vehicles or mopeds. The programme gives students a valuable insight into road use behaviours and etiquette as well as being observant drivers or passengers. It teaches students to develop safe driving habits. The programme also stresses the importance of “road safety being the responsibility of everyone in the community”

The Workshop was very comprehensive with Tania engaging both parents and students in quizzes on road safety and correct road use. She also went through the process and requirements for obtaining learners and drivers licences.

This session was an introduction to the Keys for Life programme which will be conducted by the Year 10 Health teachers from week nine this term. Students need a minimum of 10 hours of instruction of the Keys for Life programme, 80% of attendance during the programme and completing of the Journal. Once all these requirements are fulfilled, students will sit their learner’s permit in Week 6 of Term 4.

Thank you very much to all parents and students who attended this valuable and informative workshop as it provided valuable and updated information for both parents and students. Heartfelt thanks to Tania Neeson and SDERA for the ongoing support and help in ensuring our students are up skilled on road safety.

DON’T DRINK AND DROWN The Year 10 students listened to a very informative presentation by the Royal Life Saving Society of WA, on the dangers of a combination of our love for aquatic activities and a strong drinking culture creating fatal concoctions that affect families, friends and whole communities.

The presentation highlighted the message of not mixing alcohol with water activities. It highlighted the need for harm minimisation strategies to be implemented to reduce the incidence of alcohol related drowning deaths and near drowning incidents in Western Australia. Joe, the presenter provided information about alcohol, alcohol related drowning and risk reduction strategies.

He concluded the session with an inter-active session and provided students with promotional and

educational materials that covers the “Don’t drink and Drown” message. Students also had the

opportunity use the fatal vision goggles and rescue a manikin with a life ring.

UPCOMING ACC ATHLETICS IN PERTH On Sunday 6th September we have 50 students flying down to Perth to participate in the ACC Athletics Carnival. Both students and staff look forward to this event as athletes get an opportunity to showcase their talent against other schools in Perth.

Good luck to all students participating in the ACC Athletics Carnival.

On Thursday 27th August we travelled with a group of fifty students from the College to participate in the Tom Price Athletics Carnival. This was the first time St Luke’s students were to participate in the Carnival.

After a seven and a half hour journey with the traditional school bus stop at Auski to refuel whilst the students enjoyed the break and the hot chips we arrived at Tom Price High School, prepared for the Long Jump events that were going to happen under the Pilbara floodlights with the generator in full swing. There was a lovely atmosphere and our students showed good collegial spirit as they cheered on our competitors in the long jump events. They were treated to a barbeque dinner and lights out at 9:30pm in preparation for the rest of the athletics carnival on the next morning.

An early rising with breakfast at six thirty we were ready to start our running, jumping and throwing events at the oval.

Our students gave a very good account of themselves in the athletics carnival. They were very competitive in all events. The novelty egg throwing events were such fun for the Year 7s and Jordan Bushby and Jessica Garnett eventually relented to having the egg splatter on them after many cautious and safe catching hands in the event.

A fun but rewarding morning was had by all the competitors, unfortunately due to time constraints we had to leave whilst the relays were just starting to ensure we arrived back in Karratha in good time.

Congratulations to all participants and to all the Physical Education teachers for making this trip a successful and enjoyable experience.

Health Presentation

Mrs Dalton wishes to thank the medical students from Rural Health West who presented to a selection of Year 10 -12 students at St Luke’s College.

On Friday 8th August Tyler Cardy, Jiorja Ralston and Shinead Williams presented three interesting sessions on careers within the health industry. Students were divided into groups and they moved around to each session.

The three workshops consisted of:

An airway management station, showing advanced airways used by paramedics and doctors, as well as basic life support techniques required for all health professions presented by Tyler.

A cardiac monitoring station, showcasing an Electrocardiogram, heart rate rhythms and defibrillation, skills used by doctors and paramedics presented by Shinead.

Finally, Jiorja presented an exercise physiology workshop, showcasing skills used by physiotherapists and exercise physiologists.

The students received assorted course pamphlets and promotional materials from WA universities. The attending students enjoyed the presenters’ enthusiasm and interest in health opportunities and were clearly inspired by the presenters’ visit. Once again thank you to Rural Health West, WA and the presenters.

GREat Program,

On Thursday 13th August Mrs Ellen Oswald, Hospital Staff Development Nurse for Nickol Bay attended St Luke’s College to meet the interested students in the GREat (this is how GREat is displayed in their logo)work place program. This is the second year running where students from St Luke’s College have attended work placement at Nickol Bay hospital. Students from the program last year had only positive reviews for this experience and this encouraged many applicants this year.

During this session Ellen provided an orientation for the students attending placement. Students were invited to ask questions and queries were answered. Mrs Dalton wishes to thank Ellen Oswald and Natalie Male from Nurse West Health Corporate Network in Perth for their extensive time and support. The students, parents and the school are very grateful to be able to partake in this valuable opportunity, thank you once again.

Careers Speed Dating

We invited 13 presenters from 11 different service based industries to come and speak to the students. The session is set up much like speed dating where the students were broken up into groups of 10 and each group had 5 minutes with a presenter at the table. When the whistle blew the students moved to the next table.

Vacation Student Program The Vacation Student Program is a paid work experience program that is run annually in partnership with Rio Tinto.

The Program runs in two week blocks in December and January. Block 1 runs from the 7th of December until the 18th of December; Block 2 runs from the 4th of January until the 15th of January.

An induction day will be compulsory and the proposed dates are the 28th and 29th November. Students will be required to make themselves available which ever date they are given.

Students will participate in one of the two week blocks and work from Monday to Friday, 8 hours per day (total 40 hours per week, 80 hours total per block). Additionally, students are responsible to getting to and from work experience each day.

Students are placed in a Workshop/ Trade Assistant role or an Administrator / Clerical role.

Students will be placed at the following Rio Tinto sites in the Karratha area: 7 Mile, Dampier or Cape Lam-bert.

SKILLED runs the sourcing, selection, recruitment, induction and payroll aspect of the program, as well as management of the students, in conjunction with Rio Tinto. Please note, students are employed by SKILLED.

To be eligible to apply for the program, students must be in Year 10 to Year 12 (minimum age is 15) and be locally based students (reside in Karratha area).

The students must apply for a position in the program by completing an application and submitting to SKILLED, with the intention of providing students with the experience of applying for a job. Along with completing the application, they will also be required provide their report card/academic record and any relevant certificates.

Applications will then be assessed and the successful students will be advised. In past years we have had approximately 100 positions available and are hoping to have the same amount available this year. We endeavour to have enough positions for the number of applicants, however sometimes this is not possible and some students do miss out in securing a position.

Once advised successful, the students will then be scheduled in to complete a SKILLED Induction, Rio Tin-to Inductions, drug and alcohol test and also be fitted with PPE. Upon completing the full on boarding pro-cess, the students are ready to commence in their two week placement. Following placement, our local SKILLED Karratha Branch Representatives are on site regularly to ensure the students are doing well and are available to answer any questions or queries they have. Students are placed in Rio Tinto Departments with full supervision and engage with Rio Tinto staff who will mentor the students during their place-ment.

Please see attached a copy of the 2015/2016 advertisement and application document; SKILLED encour-age all eligible students to apply. Applications close on the 25th of September.

Application forms will be emailed to students.
