LEADERS Leaders Tech Startup Competition

ForewordThe OneTeam Collective is the first sports-centric venture that is designed to accelerate growth for startups by giving access to the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA)’s exclusive group licensing rights for all 2,000+ NFL players. As the premier global sports conference, bringing together innovative ideas and companies, the Leaders Sport Business Summit aligns with the OneTeam Collective’s effort to reach an international audience. The OneTeam Collective seeks startups that will deliver on the mission of improving the lives of professional athletes, their fans and athletes around the world. The partnership with Leaders to present the Tech Startup Competition introduced the OneTeam Collective to the international startup community.

“Sponsorship of the Tech Startup Competition was the perfect vehicle to introduce the OneTeam Collective to a global audience,” said Steve Scebelo, NFLPA VP of Licensing and Business Development. “The caliber of each of the finalists was strong. The OneTeam Collective founding partners especially look forward to further exploring opportunities with Windpact, the winner of the Competition.”

As the central gathering place for innovative ideas and startups, the Leaders Sport Business Summit is positioned at the forefront of the future of sport, and The Tech Startup Competition presented by the OneTeam Collective helped bring those ideas to life.

LEADERS Leaders Tech Startup Competition

The ProcessThe Leaders Sport Business Summit is the home of new ideas in sport and plays a key role in driving innovation and championing new talent across the industry. Now in its second year, the Tech Startup Competition provided a platform for the next generation of great and disruptive ideas to be identified and celebrated from the world’s technology startup community in front of a live audience of 300 senior executives in world sport.

Nominations were invited from across the globe, using Leaders and One Team Collective’s extensive network, as well as partners, Sportradar. Over 90 nominations flooded in and two independent judges with venture capital and strategic investment backgrounds in sport were chosen by Leaders to select the finalists.

The standard of application was so high that five of the most promising startups in sports business and performance tech were identified and invited to the Leaders Sport Business Summit on 5 October 2017 at Chelsea FC to pitch their product or service to an expert judging panel from a cross-section of sport covering broadcast media, a sports team, and competition presenting partner One Team Collective and sponsor Sportradar.

After an exciting afternoon of hearing from all five finalists, and a rigorous judging process to decide the winners, the competition was won by Windpact, an impact protection company who were given the opportunity to hold meetings with top executives from competition supporters Chelsea FC, Sky Sports and LA Clippers, have access to a series of Sports Tech Accelerator programmes around the world, and be the centerpiece of a major sports industry report on sports technology.

LEADERS Leaders Tech Startup Competition

Winner Q&AWhat was it about Leaders and the competition that made you enter? We understood that the Leaders Sport Business Summit brought together pre-eminent thought-leaders in sports; and at Windpact we feel we are bringing to market some cutting edge technologies that we wanted to share with others. Not only were there potential customers in the crowd of conference participants, but we knew we could learn from others joining the discussions as well. In addition, the involvement of the NFL Player’s Association was a draw for us.

What fascinated you most about the competition on the day?More than anything what I enjoyed on the day of the competition was being able to share the Windpact story with so many eager and interested colleagues - and to hear the stories of the other contestants. There are a lot of unique and helpful tools coming to the forefront of sports technology and it’s exciting to be a part of the movement. What has been the most profound change to happen at Windpact since you won?At Windpact we have long focused on the US sports market and recently began discussions with the auto and defense industries. Since winning the award we recognize that there are a number of applications for our technology and we are curious to explore what opportunities might exist in other geographies as well as other industries.

What was great about the people you met at The Leaders Sport Business Summit?Everyone was so enthusiastic about the subject matter and yet they were all curious to learn from other attendees as well. The Summit provides a terrific opportunity to create partnerships and exchange ideas while building on the thought-provoking conversations from the various sessions each day.

How would you sell the idea to someone who was thinking of entering the competition next year?It is a fantastic opportunity to distill the mission of your company down to its core, and communicate the passion behind what you are building to a room full of potential clients, investors and colleagues. Being a part of this competition and especially as a finalist, we were inspired to think bigger and more broadly while also reflecting and feeling proud of the work we had progressed to-date.

How do you feel about winning the Leaders Tech Startup Competition? We have long believed in what we are looking to achieve at Windpact, and the long-term impact we can have in protecting athletes in a variety of sports. Winning the Leaders Tech Startup Competition inspired us to see that others believe in our mission - and our vision - as well. It was an honor to be recognized. Thank you.

LEADERS Leaders Tech Startup Competition

Partner FeedbackWhy did you partner with Leaders? We have been attending or participating at the Leaders Sport Business Summit for years now and we have seen its focus, network and credibility grow in that time. It has been and remains one of the leading global gatherings that brings established names and innovators in the sporting realm together at a high level. The learning and networking opportunities are pretty much peerless.

What attracted you to the Leaders Tech Startup Competition?Sportradar has already established an enviable global reputation in terms of sports innovation and technology. Whether developing player tracking data-driven products via machine-learning for NBA and NFL fans or delivering a fully flexible OTT solution that offers a risk-free iteration, we are proud of the trust we have garnered from those pushing fan engagement forward. As of today, we feel that it is part of our role in the ecosystem to support the entrepreneurs that are coming through and evolving the space. We have been working with academic institutions and hackathons across continents and so it felt like a great fit for us to come in and support Leaders’ own efforts in identifying and propelling the companies and innovations that will make a real difference’s to tomorrow’s sport.

How did you find the event experience? While the Leaders Sport Business Summit is a big event that runs across many days, it manages to retain an intimacy that allows those interested and invested in certain areas that ability to really get under the skin of their focus. The intimacy of the Tech Startup really worked from our point of view and permitted a much more conversational aspect to the Competition.

What were the key benefits from the partnership? There were the obvious benefits in terms of branding around the event, on site as well as before and after, but we enjoyed the chance to discuss the companies and their ideas on the panel, with the competitors themselves and with the other attendees. There was a climate of evaluation and discussion that felt very informative. Of course it was also really useful for us to draw that connection between what we are already doing around the world and what Leaders are promoting and supporting. It felt like a meeting of missions.
