2nd Annual Cultural Fair Builds Community and

Cultural AwarenessThis spring, our entire K-7 program joined forces for our 2nd annual Cultural Fair, an event designed to foster awareness and ap-preciation for the many different cultural backgrounds represented by families at The New School.

Each grade level got to choose a country from which a New School family originates, spending the spring semester preparing for

the fair by incorporating research about that country into their daily studies. Then, one morning in May, we transformed our class-rooms into cultural “museums,” displaying information and artifacts from the countries studied. Students were tasked with making presentations and performances to other classes touring their classroom. They also helped guide their peers through their mu-seum, practicing their public speaking skills by offering interesting facts and answering questions.

In addition to supporting our Cultural Appreciation Curriculum, the Cultural

Fair also provides our students from Kindergarten through 7th grade the op-portunity to interact with and learn from each other. The event strengthens the bond of our school community while expand-ing awareness of the diversity represented within that community. We look forward to growing this yearly tradition, and we hope to continue adding new countries as new families join our school.

Spring Highlights

Pre-K Art Show: This spring’s Pre-Kindergarten Art Show may have been the best one ever! Each of our four pre-kindergarten classes spent one month creating pieces inspired by a particular artistic theme. Their work cul-minated in an impressive show that filled our gym with a dazzling array of colors and materials. The art show gives these young students a space to proudly show their cre-ative work to their friends and families.

Fun in the Library: This spring, kindergarten students made a new friend in our library named “Reed the Book”. Reed made special appear-ances during library time throughout the year, welcoming students into the library and teaching them how to take care of his friends (the books). Reed tells lots of silly jokes, but also encourages our students to explore the library and read more books. We appreciate our librarian Ms. Marly Morris (and her friend Reed) for going the extra mile to make the library a fun and engaging place for our students to learn.

Visit from a Fire Truck: One day in March, preschool classes were treated to special visit by the Fire Department for a tour through a real fire truck right here on our campus. To reinforce their unit on community helpers, students got to meet real firemen who guided them through the different parts of the truck. The students even got to watch them ex-tend their ladder to see how high it can get!

Spring Highlights

2nd Grade Habitat Project: This spring, 2nd grade students par-ticipated in our annual Animal Habitats Project. These students were asked to choose any animal to research, then compose a two paragraph report on that animal and its habitat to read aloud in front of an audience of their parents, teachers, and peers. Students also worked at home to create elaborately detailed dioramas depicting their animal in its habitat. We’re proud of our 2nd grade teachers for designing such a fun project that combines research, writing, public speak-ing, and mixed media art.

4th Grade State Fair: Students in 4th grade learned all about the United States through our annual State Fair project. Each student chose their own state to research, then presented their findings in a fair with booths set up in their classrooms. Each booth featured a web page that students created themselves, as well as maps, post-ers, iconic images and people, and a food dish, all related to their state. This project teaches our 4th graders about our country, and exposes them to the wide variety of medi-ums through which a student can make a report.

Another Successful Science Fair: Middle School students spent much of their spring semester developing science projects to compete in the University of Arkansas Regional Science Fair. After working individually with Middle School Science Teacher Amber Jones to perfect their projects, students presented their findings on large posters in our gym and answered questions from teachers, parents, fellow students, and official judges from the regional fair. Congratulations to the overall winners of the New School’s fair: Elizabeth Spicer, Kendall Ching, Bailey Brya, Katie Motherwell, Kalina Kalyan, and Connor Fritsch. Winners of the regional fair will be announced in the Annual Report!

Spring Highlights

Pre-K & Middle School Plays: Theater has always been an integral part of The New School experience, and this spring, students continued in this tradition by putting on three great musical performances. Pre-kindergarten classes took to the stage for their first theater experience, performing the always-entertaining Farnahan’s Circus (a New School original). Middle School students presented the classic Fiddler on the Roof, with many compelling and mature performances delivered by our 7th grade stu-dents in their final New School production. We look forward to the day when we can build a larger auditorium to accommodate even bigger plays and bigger audiences!

Piano Recitals: In April, New School piano students pre-sented their Spring Recital in our beautiful Baledge Arts Annex performance space. The recital offered our students the chance to demonstrate their progress, and experience performing in a public and formal manner. We’re proud to offer optional piano lessons integrated into our students’ school day for the convenience of our parents.

Choir & Violin Recitals: Our violin and choir students teamed up this spring to present a recital, showcas-ing their skills for their families and friends. Violin students performed songs in a group, after which some students played solo pieces. The choir sang beautifully, with solos featured throughout their songs. With so many students taking choir and violin lessons each day at The New School, we’re always glad to hear what they’ve been up to.

Spring Highlights

KG Celebration & 7th Grade Graduation: Once again, we’ve graduated another be-loved class of 7th grade students, many of whom have been at The New School for most of their lives. Student Council president Kenzi Kostel delivered a heart-felt speech, reminiscing on her experiences at New School with an eloquence truly beyond her years. On the same day, we celebrated our kindergarten class’ completion of their first year of elementary school with diplo-mas, songs, and a hilarious video of students saying what they want to be when they grow up. We’re proud of all our students, kinder-garten through 7th grade, for the successful completion of another great school year.

Staff Appreciation Week: Thanks to our parent volunteers who make up the Staff Appreciation Committee, our staff truly enjoyed this year’s week of events, which included:

Monday - Personalized Stationary: Each employee received a special gift of station-ary from the Staff Appreciation Committee.

Tuesday - Subway Sandwiches and all the Fixings: generously donated by Subway!

Wednesday - “Take & Bake” : Staff enjoyed delicious goodies that our staff apprecia-tion committee members baked and were able to take home used books brought in by parents.

Thursday - Take-Home Spaghetti Dinner: Staff enjoyed delicious homemade Spa-ghetti Dinners To Go for the entire family.

Friday - Relaxation Day: Each staff member was pampered with a 15 minute chair mas-sage by students from Blue Cliff College.

Thank you Staff Appreciation Committee Members! The Staff truly enjoyed our week!

Joplin Tornado Relief Supplies Collected at The New School: In response to the recent tornado disasters in Joplin and elsewhere, The New School made arrange-ments through parent Kristen Kley to serve as a drop-off location for relief supplies. Hogeye Rentals graciously donated a por-table storage unit, where these items were securely stored. Many New School parents and students helped out by donating non-perishable relief supplies at our school. After a week of collection, students from 1st and 2nd grades helped transfer the donations into vehicles for delivery to Joplin. All supplies donated truly made a difference for those affected.

La Fiesta 2011 was held on Saturday, May 7th in The New School’s gymnasium and cafeteria. Nearly 400 New School families and friends attended the Cinco de Mayo cel-ebration and over $114,000 was raised for The New School. The “South of the Border” event was presented by the Northwest Arkansas Center for Plastic Surgery and included delicious Mexican food catered by Hog Haus, Margarita Man beverages, enter-tainment by Mariachi Amistad, the music of Trajikly White, and extravagant silent and live auctions.

The evening’s most successful auction items included a custom-built Harley Davidson, a trip on a private jet for eight to the Arkansas vs. Alabama Football game, a $1,000 Romance Diamond Company shopping extravaganza, designer denim and shoes each month for a year and the opportunity to be featured in a print ad at 3 Monkeys Children’s Boutique, VIP table for 4 for the season at the AMP, a private wine tast-ing party at The Wine Cellar for you and 30 guests, and a Zac Brown Autographed Guitar.

Some of the most popular silent auction prizes were the 42 items donated by New School teachers as gifts of time and included having a lock-in party at the school, getting to be teacher for a day, and many more. An exciting $5,000 cash prize raffle was won by Mr. and Mrs. Michael and Jamie Banks.

This will save lots of time for our staff and enable us to get the newest resources to our students as soon as they are available.

Over the past year, The New School has placed the investment in emerging technol-ogy for our students as a top priority, and has worked to further integrate technology throughout our curriculum. Our school is committed to enhancing our technology resources and growing campus connectivity. Through these commitments and the gener-ous support by the Allen family and others, we are confident that our school will con-tinue to offer the children an exceptional learning environment.

Spaghetti Supper for 7th Grade DC Trip: On March 17th, the 7th grade students, their parents, and New School kitchen staff did a fantastic job hosting a Spaghetti Supper Fundraiser to raise money for the 7th grade’s spring field trip to Washington DC. Combined proceeds from the spaghetti sup-per dinners, the beautiful St. Patrick’s Day centerpieces that the students and parents arranged, and the delicious baked goods for dessert totaled $1,300 for the students.
