We are coming to the end of another year with Xmas just around the corner and the whole of Cape Town getting geared up for the festive frenzy but let us not forget “the reason for the Season” and be grateful for another blessed year behind us. Once again one can reflect back on some excellent activities of recent which were well supported by our members and friends, to mention a few, Ostrich Run, breakfast at Bot Rivier, Beaver Rally, and of course not forgetting our upcoming meal /get together at Dias Tavern. On behalf of the club and members, I would to thank all those who put in the extra effort to make these events memorable, we all know who you are and we salute you. As the AGM is in January and nomination forms have been circulated, it is now time for members to consider nomination for next year’s committee, this is something we need to give serious consideration in order to keep the club functioning at “TOP LEVEL” Next big event is the Dance on 5 December, tickets I believe are going fast. Past Rides Keith reported that the Bot River run was good however the service at the
hotel was very slow, possibly because of the large number of members that attended.
Future Rides The alternate ride to the Ostrich run will be to Riebeek Wes.
Charity: Robbie Doidge reminded the members that the recent R20 increase in subs
was to cover our social responsibilities. Eiland Huis – Members were requested to donate duvet covers. Club to make a
bulk purchase once funds are pledged. Possibly also 2 towels per child. Jackie Cowman said Kolnicks Linen had excellent prices on good quality
duvetcovers and towels.

A social evening is being planned at the Dias Tavern in Cape Town. Proposed date is 7 November. Robbie Doidge will book 40 seats. Members to please con-
firm bookings. Cricket match with CTMCC deferred until January.
EOY function scheduled for 5 December which will be partially sponsored from club funds.
General: It was decided to cancel breakfast sponsorships and sponsor major club events
such as the End of Year and Mid Year function in order to be fair on those who are unable to make specific rides.
At the AGM in January the HBC will need a minimum of two new members, preferably more. Closing date for nominations will be the November social
meeting (27 November). Nomination forms will be sent out shortly.
Beaver Rally – Robbie Doidge will transport gear up in his trailer for members.
Drop your kit off to Robbie by the Thursday before the run at the very latest. No chairs will be transported.

The Summer Of
Looooooooooooooooove! Yes, we’re goin’ back to the 60’s and our
The weekend simply flew by and before I knew it, it was time to meet our fellow Odysseuns at N1 City. When Chavonne and I left home, the sun was out. By the time we got to Koeberg road there was fog everywhere and then a few kms further at N1 City, the sun was out again. Only in Cape Town do you have this. Keith asked me to take the run and was glad I did, as we got to ride through some of the most beautiful parts the Western Cape has to offer. At first, I was a little worried as Devin bike doesn’t like long distances, but he seemed to get through OK (shooo, I feel relieved Sadly we could not stop for a smoke break, as we were under pressure to arrive at the facility at 10h30. We left just after 09h00 and headed along the N1, onto the R300, where we passed a number of Harley riders, who were speeding along at 100 km/h. We then headed on to the N2, through Somerset West where we picked up some stray dogs, being Jacqui, Jenny, Peter & Dick. Just before we got to Clarens Drive, we picked up some more strays, being Brian & Megan. Don’t you find it amazing how we always seem to find Odysseuns on street corners (and I mean that in the nicest possible way). We started off at N1 with just over 40 people and by the time we arrived at Botriver Hotel, we had 58 people. Certainly a very well supported run. The road along Clarens Drive was simply stunning. A fair number of cars were on the road, which makes it a bit more complicated being the big group that we are, but nonetheless, it was a magnificent ride with the ocean on one side and the most amazing mountain range on our left. The quicker boys
managed (with some difficulty) to regroup the group from Kleinmond. As we arrived in Botriver, you could feel the sun baking down on us in the valley. A few more strays found their way
directly to the Hotel as they were afraid the bar may run out of beer. Can you believe these guys. We also had a number of guests join our ride, which was great to
see. Everyone seemed to find a space to sit and of course the poor barman had his turn with plenty of thirsty turtles wanting a cold
one. I for one, made the wisest move by helping Robbie collect the R50 for breakfast and sent my lovely wife to get me a cold one. I do charge a nominal
fee (R50 per head) to reveal
my secret on how to get ones better half to bring you a cold one. And boy oh boy, did she come through for me, with an ice cold Hansa. B/Fast appeared a little frantic as the hotel were also preparing for a crowd that would arrive for lunch. However on the whole, we seemed to get through the glitches and everyone was able to secure a plate of brekkie. I personally don’t think they could
handle much more than 40 of us. A number of die hards stuck it out as they heard the next place serving beer or wine was some way away and needed ample refreshments in their system to get them to the other side of the mountain. They stayed on, held their position and the rest started leaving in drips and drabs. Thanks to all for joining the run. Until the next one. Cheers Wayne.

Report back: ostrich
weekend
Chavonne and I did our first Ostrich Run to Oudtshoorn 3 years ago and I am hooked. Phil and Jo Searle decided some nine years back to put a yearly event together that would take club members either via road, or via dirt, to Kleinplasie Resort in Oudtshoorn. Expectations from all was that the 2014 run would be even bigger and better than previous years. Our club did not let us down. We had 64 people that ended up at Kleinplasie. Both PE and Cape Town Odysseuns showed bigger support for the event than previous years. Phil suggested the first run was something like 11 people. I was packed and raring to go on Wednesday 22/10/14 already and my wife who needs the world of patience with me, reminded me a few times to slow down, as we still had two sleepies to go. As life would have it (this time round), time dragged. Thursday night I did a third and final check and we were 110% ready to rumble. I could barely sleep, so woke up early and asked my honey bun to get ready and then we could head to the meeting point before anyone else got there. Chavonne did not have my issue of not being able to sleep and was sleeping quite nicely, so the day started slightly edgy, but I was adamant that we should head out early. The promise of a nice breakfast at the Engen N1 Wimpy was some consolation and a peace offering. Phew, glad I could get her to smile, otherwise our trip would have been long and painful one. From 07h30 Friday morning our fellow members started arriving in drips and drabs, filling up with fuel, the off roaders buying some sarmies and coldrinks (no beer, we promise officer) as we had no good places to stop along the route and we all then gathered in anticipation of us leaving. At 08h20 one of the chaps picked up a nail at the garage and we then tried to fix his puncture in the parking lot. What a good start After much effort, we failed and he headed into Bellville to get it fixed. He would meet us on route. The route was simple. We would all head up the N1, through Helshoogte (woo hoo) and then through Franschoek and through the pass that took us to Villiersdorp. We pulled off and the roadies, led by Tony, gathered together and the off roaders lined up behind Phil (Jo was tail end Charlie) and we headed off. Now if you know Phil, you would know that he and his family, Jo and son Joshua, hit the dirt
every other weekend. This man knows every dirt road possible that travels through the Karoo. He can talk the hind legs off a donkey with what he knows and will not forget what the road was called, or how long it is. Quite amazing cause he doesn’t look that smart To me they all look pretty much the same, with only the scenery that changes on route. So for most of the trip I was completely lost and simply sat behind him. One of the big hi-lites of the trip was going through Sewewekespoort. The scenery was awesome. Robin and Dave fell later on in the day. Both ride yellow BMW’s, so not sure if that is a clue not to buy one. Fortunately, though shaken, they were not badly hurt. The sand was rather thick which made handling not to great. There recovery was simply astonishing as they still forced a few pints down when they got to Oudtshoorn. Good on you guys!! When we arrived, my wife wanted to go to the room and chill and unpack and and and…. I left her. I was so excited to see our friends from PE who had arrived earlier
the day. I grabbed a cold one and ran to them like a lost puppy needing love. They opened their arms to me. Eddie, the leader of the pack and Jackie said howzit and got to meet some of their members that I never met before. Braam, a tall looking, intimidating frame type of guy (jokes), is a big prangster. Eddie and his wife are going on a cruise, by boat, from Cape Town to Namibia and back after our weekend getaway. Here is the twist. Some of the other members’ wives will be joining Eddie on the cruise, while they bike around. So Eddie, the good looking stud that he is, has become player 23 overnight and was offered plenty of blue pills (not sure what that is for). Braam then brought out a turban (scary that he had one with a name like Braam) and fitted this to Eddie. He was then dubbed as Eddie “Paddavat” for the weekend. Force be with you Eddie!!. That evening was simply awesome with a braai and food fit for kings and queens. We ate
well, we socialised harder and eventually we all slipped off to bed. See Overleaf…..

Ostrich 2014 Cont:……..
The Saturday saw everyone head off into different
directions. The roadies went viaMossel Bay to Sedgefield Market where they had lunch and the off roaders went to the
Swartberg. Sadly we could not join, but believe the journey was worth it,
with simply amazing scenery.
We all gathered later that day to watch Marnitz Boshoff of the Lions win the Currie Cup final for WP. I love
that guy. What a team player. Plenty of drinks were consumed, with plenty of banter, with me having the biggest mouth of them all. Thanks for not slapping
me guys. Far too kind.
We then had dinner and enjoyed the rest of what the
evening had to offer. At
around 23h30 the last of us die hards, who simply never
know when to quit, decided to call it a night and head back to
the ranch for some harmonious snoring.
Sunday came and it dawned on all that our great adventure had come to an end. We all had to head home. The roadies went via Route 62 and the off
roaders led by Phil went via Meiringspoort and the Pont on their journey back to Cape Town and of course the PE chaps went back to PE.
Thanks to Phil and Jo for an amazing event. The comraderie, the gees, the rides, the stories, the humour, the brotherhood, is simply fantastic and this is what makes our club such a

Report back: alternate run to
riebeeck wes: Sunday, 26 October
The run on the 26th October coincided with the Ostrich Run so we did not expect a large turnout and our expectations were met. I am happy to report that one of our members Peter Jones organised the run for us. There were 10 bikes in total, 6 went off road and 4 on tar.
It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed a pleasant and relaxed ride through the back roads near Durbanville and Wellington to Riebeeck West. I saw a largish snake on the road; it was black with whitish stripes, quite broad. I have not been able to identify it so if there are any herpetologists among you please enlighten me. [No! a herpetologist has nothing to do with STD’s]
The tar babies arrived at the venue first, the Oude Schuur restaurant and we tucked onto some cold ones. We sat downstairs in a cool cellar type room which opened out onto the garden, there being quite a steep slope from front to back which resulted in a 2 storey type effect. It was too hot to sit outside even though there were some shady trees.
The dusty bunch was not far behind us and soon we were engaged in tall stories and general banter. We had a couple of visitors who were most welcome and who provided some good laughs, I hope they join the club as they were good company and entertaining. The food was very good and plentiful, with some homemade marmalade “to die for” – made from fruit grown on the premises with no chemicals used in the ripening. The restaurant has a shop attached selling all sorts of bits and pieces and preserves, so with the festive season upon us it is worth a visit if you are in the area.

Christmas Charity Run 7 December:
Die Eiland House Decorations, Duvet and Towel Run
Hi All, As per our discussion at the October social, I would like to highlight certain points of discussion with regards to our visit to Die Eilandhuis. The event takes place on the 7
th December leaving from Mc Donalds N1 City at 8h30 for 9h00 or as that
will be midsummer and light early it may be an idea to leave a bit earlier. The idea of this run is twofold, firstly, on arrival everyone rolls up their sleeves and we all jump in to decorate the rooms and reception for Xmas, and secondly to drop off our donations and socialize with the children, after which we will be joining the management committee at a braai for which each member will contribute—if it is anything to go by, our last braai there was unbelievable for which we paid a pittance. The request from Die Eilandhuis is that we make this a duvet cover/towel run. They have got 15 beds and our wish is to supply 2 duvet sets and two towels to each bed thus allowing a change. A request has come from some members that they wish to donate a duvet set and towels, to date we have 4 such donations and we would love to hear from any other such kind donors. Although the club has got allocated funds for this project, some still over from the generous donation of the Trollops at the last run, any funds remaining we would also like to give each child and dedicated staff member a small Xmas gift. The idea is if persons would like to make donations we will be pricing the duvet sets/towels and request a cash donation to the club and we will purchase them in an attempt to keep things sort of uniform. Chavonne is busy looking at prices and will let all know as soon as we have info. It is also requested if you have any “old” Xmas decorations laying around gathering dust, these would be gladly appreciated as we need these to decorate the home.
