Step Up Program Tuesday saw the start of the “Step Up” program for 2019. This program allows all of our students to get a head start on next year’s work in all of their subjects. This is vitally important for Year 11 and 12 subjects as time during the year is limited. For current Year 10 and 11 students, Step Up runs all of next week, concluding Friday December 7. It also allows our current students from Years 7 to 9 to experience something of what next year will be like, and be completing meaningful work until the last day of their timetabled classes on Friday December 14. Year 7-9 students are expected to attend school on both Monday 17th and Tuesday 18th. Energy Breakthrough Last weekend saw the Energy Breakthrough hit the streets of Maryborough with teams entered from all across the state, from both Government and Independent schools. We entered our usual two teams but this year, things were a bit different as we did not run Energy Breakthrough as a Year 9/10 class. This year, interested students from any year level were invited to participate and in the end we had one team made up of mostly Year 11 boys (with Edward and Ned) and then a mixed team of Year 7 and 8’s. Both teams had trained hard over the last few weeks and months and did an outstanding job over the weekend – both on and off the track. We were delighted to come home with our highest ever podium finish – with Insufficient Funds coming 10th overall and 6th in class. Our previous best was in the 40’s so it was a great achievement. Send It Again came 84th overall and 12th in class which is great for one of the youngest teams with little experience. Well done to all competitors and much thanks to Mr Reynolds and Mr Marland for their ongoing work with the teams, and to Mrs Reynolds and Mrs Jackson (and Jenna Kirkpatrick) for camping out with the stu-dents over the weekend. Thanks also to School Council for their support in purchasing the new trisled trike which clearly helped the performance – and Steve Hicks whose paint job was wonderful – until the cart was rolled a couple of times Saturday night! Thanks also to the many parents who came to support our two teams. State School Spectacular A date for the diaries – the broadcast of this year’s Victorian State School Spectacular is Saturday December 8 on Channel 7 at 8pm. This is a fantastic State Government initiative that is well worth a watch. I am confident that we will be able to see our students who participated in the event – and also see the fantastic talents that we have in our state school system. If you have never seen it be-fore, I encourage you all to have a look – or set the recorder to watch it later. Year 12 Graduation On Wednesday night our Year 12 students, staff and parents gathered at the RSL Hall to celebrate the annual Graduation Dinner. This is a night to both celebrate a group of students who have fin-ished their secondary schooling, and allow them the opportunity to thank the staff and their parents for the support they have received throughout the year. It was a very positive night – with stories shared and an opportunity to mix in a relaxed atmosphere. Thanks to Mrs Dean and her crew for their organisation. Presentation Night Just a reminder to all families that Presentation Night is on Tuesday December 18 at the Town Hall at 7.30pm. Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 in 2018 are expected at school until lunchtime – when they can either go to the pool for activities or go home with a note. It is compulsory for all students to attend Presentation Night and be in full school uniform. Reports will be distributed at the end of the ceremony, which will be a bit different this year. I look forward to seeing everyone there. Tony Hand Principal

Energy Breakthrough

The annual Energy Breakthrough took place between the 22nd

to the 25th of November in

Maryborough. St. Arnaud Secondary College had two teams of students across take part in this challenging 24 hour Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) event. The group of 20 students had been preparing for weeks in readiness for the challenge. The four days at the Energy Breakthrough require the students to work closely as a team, work to deadlines and to be resilient. Our students and vehicles, Send It Again in the B1 class and the brand new Insufficient Funds in the Open class, were put through their paces with a series of displays, presenta-tions, rigorous scrutineering and of course, racing. Friday, the day before the 24 hour race, is always busy. Each team undertook a presenta-tion to a panel of community members. They had to explain the process of how their team made it to the Breakthrough, why their vehicles are designed the way they are and show an understanding of the environmental issues that are related to our current transporta-tion systems. Scrutineering, where the vehicle is tested for safety and compliance to the rules, is always a challenging process and one that usually leads to headaches. However, both vehicles passed through the scrutineering without major issues. Students were then required to explain the engineering concepts behind their vehicle to a panel of experts. With the formalities of presentations behind them our students took to the track for the night practice session. On Saturday, the starting grid formed up and at 1pm the field of 100 vehicles, some elec-trical powered, some hybrid but the vast majority being pedal powered were away and racing. Our teams did extremely well with Insufficient Funds finishing 10

th overall, the highest

place St. Arnaud has been placed at this event, by completing 543 laps, or 857.9 km in 24 hours. Send It Again finished 84

th completing 353 laps or 557.7km iin the 24 hours.

During the weekend we had a number of visits from parents, community members and ex-students who came down to relive their time at the Energy Breakthrough. It was great to see a sea of familiar faces amongst our pit lane tents. Thank you to all the sponsors, parents and staff who assisted throughout this process. A special thank you to the students involved who showed high levels of resilience and team work, especially when the going got tough. Mr. Reynolds

Dallas Competes Interstate

Dallas Flanagan competed in the ECTRA Rodeo event last fortnight at KRanch Areana in Camden, near Sydney. Congratulations is extended to him for winning his Rodeo event, team roping over three head of cattle. He did this in a time of 27.1 seconds and then took home prize money and trophy sad-dles. Well done Dallas.

On the 16th of September 2018, I began my

trip to Perth, WA, where I was about to

compete in the FHE Cup 2018. Prior to my

journey to the FHE Cup, I was involved in

multiple hours of training sessions in Mel-

bourne and an individualised fitness pro-

gram, identified by my coaches. This in-

volved training 4 nights a week. During my

time at the Cup, we played against three

WA sides and also against teams from Ma-

laysia and Singapore. Japan also competed

in the Cup but were not in our pool. My

team CCA U16s boys placed 7th out of 10

teams. Overall, the experience and coach-

ing by Ryan and Lou Ciriello (father and son

duo) has been great and has helped me pro-

gress as a player on and off the field.
