A music workshop will be held on Saturday, 9

March from 9am to 12pm. All musicians and

singers in our parish, whether you are already

involved or would like to become involved in our

music groups are invited to attend.

A group of ladies in our parish works on a roster

basis making soup for the needy in the valley.

They are in need of more volunteers to assist

them. If you are able to help, or would like to

know more, please contact Ros Donnelly on

    031 765 4530.

The Ladies’ Guild are responsible for organising

funeral teas for the church and would like to

request anyone who may be able to assist with

this function to please contact them on

    [email protected].

The teas are normally during the week and

may take 2 or 3 hours of a morning or afternoon.

We would like to establish a list of volunteers in

order that we can rotate the duty so as to not

have to rely on the same helpers every time. Any

assistance would be greatly appreciated and

would purely be on an availability basis.

Our next LifeTeen Camp will take place from

Friday 29 March to Sunday 31 March at Anerley

on the South Coast. The cost is R700 per child. If

you are available to help lift the children to and

from the camp, please contact Julie Ronald on

    083 286 2050.

The SSVP is again appealing for donations of

books for their sales to be held during the year.

These can be left in the SSVP trolley.

On 16 February, an excited group of youngsters from

the KwaNyuswa and Bethlehem drop-in centres arrived

at Forest View Primary School for their first computer

lesson. Thanks to the kindness and generosity of the

principal and staff of the school, many of these

children were using a computer for the first time. The

teenagers enjoyed learning about and practicing the

different functions found in the Word programme and

had fun drawing on the computer.

A very big, heart-felt thank you goes to Hilda

Coombes for giving our children something to look

forward to for the rest of the year while they learn new

skills that are normally out of their reach.

Hilda Coombes giving the drop-in centre youngsters their first IT lesson.

    Winter Warmth Campaign

The SSVP will be starting their Winter Warmth campaign on the weekend of 9 and 10 March. Wool and patterns for beanies and bed socks will be handed out at all Masses on that weekend. Children’s jerseys may also be knitted with the wool.

We are also appealing for jerseys – for adults and children – as well as blankets and would be most grateful for any contributions.

All items are to be handed in by the beginning of May.

The SSVP thank you all so much for your support.

Altar servers are a vital part of the liturgical ministry.

They are vital because altar servers perform not just a

functional role but a symbolic role and symbolism is

the language of worship. Their actions in the Mass are

symbolic of much more than you think and the way

they serve can lead people closer to God.

Serving at the altar is a privileged way to draw

closer to Jesus, which, in the words of Pope Francis

“enables you to open yourselves to others, to journey

together, to set demanding goals and to find the

    strength to achieve them.”

“The closer you are to the altar,” he says, “the more

    you will remember to speak with Jesus in daily prayer;

the more you will be nourished by the Word and the

body of the Lord, the better able you will be to go out

to others, bringing them the gift that you have

received, giving in turn with enthusiasm the joy you

    have received.”

    So what can I do?

At St Dominic’s, the altar server ministry is overseen by

Lisa Redman and Hannah Schimper, who are in charge

of training our servers and setting up the rosters.

Unfortunately though, there seems to be a trend

among our servers that as soon as they become

confirmed in the faith they down their cassocks!

But we hate to see you go! Nowhere is it said that

the ministry should be open only to children below

confirmation age – serving at the altar is open to all!

Catholic churches around the world even have

pensioners serving! So if you are a young adult or a

slightly older adult who feels called to serve in this

way, we need you. You will be provided with all the

training you need and serve on a roster basis.

Lisa Redman can be contacted on 083 385 0385

should you have any questions or would like to serve

    in this meaningful ministry.

Caritas Calls Health & Welfare Practitioners

Through Caritas Durban, the Archdiocese is in the process of establishing a ‘Professional Health and Welfare Committee’, which would assist in volunteering its services in Caritas projects within the Archdiocese of Durban. The Archdiocese has plans to take this critical area of work to another level in order to contribute towards improving the healthcare and welfare of ordinary people within our diocese.

Health and welfare practitioners within St Dominic’s are requested to provide the parish office with their details, which will then be submitted to Caritas Durban. Thereafter a first meeting will be convened with all practitioners where the matter will be appropriately discussed.

    ACCOMMODATION NEEDED

Karl Breinhorst is urgently looking for a 1 or 2

bedroom cottage to rent. Please contact him on

082 452 6766 if you are able to assist.

Temporary accomodation is also urgently needed

for an unemployed single mother and her child,

who due to a series of unfortunate circumstances

need to move out of their current home. Should

anyone be able to open their home to these

parishioners until mom finds a job, please write

to [email protected] or contact Katia

Sciocatti on 082 783 6396. If at all possible, they

would prefer to remain in the Waterfall / Forest

Hills / Crestholme area where they currently stay.
