FOCUS ON WORSHIP

St. Luke, Evangelist: October 18 is the festival of St. Luke, Evangelist. St. Luke was a gentile physician,

follower of Christ and companion of St. Paul. Identified as the author of both Luke and Acts, Luke was careful

to place the events of Jesus' life in their social and religious contexts. His gospel gives us some of the most

beloved parables, as well as the songs of Zechariah, Mary, the angels, and Simeon. We observe this lesser

festival when it falls on a Sunday.

Reformation Day: Reformation Day is not part of the Liturgical Calendar, but is important as part of our

Lutheran heritage. It is a day for giving thanks for Martin Luther and the other reformers, but much more, it

calls attention to the ongoing need for ecumenical growth and renewal of the church. It falls on October 31st

every year, but is observed on the Sunday on or before October 31. On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther wrote

to Albrecht, Archbishop of Mainz and Magdeburg, protesting against the sale of indulgences. He enclosed in

his letter a copy of his "Disputation of Martin Luther on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences," which came

to be known as The 95 Theses. Luther wrote the 95 Theses and posted them on the church of All Saints, an

event now seen as sparking the Protestant Reformation. The liturgical color of the day is red, which represents

the Holy Spirit and the Martyrs of the Christian Church. Luther's hymn, “A Mighty Fortress is our God” is

often sung on this Sunday.

A Note from Pastor Fred

NAMES

In the narthex of our church there is a framed document with the signatures of all the

people who were charter members of St. Luke. Of course, just about all of them are

unknown to me – people from the past who formed this church under the missionary

guidance of Pastor Bill. I can only imagine the enthusiasm for what it means to be part

of an emerging church. I experienced some of that at my previous church, Bethlehem

Lutheran when they walked into their new constructed church on Easter day – their

years of savings culminating in tears of joy.

This year, on Sunday, October 29, as we mark Reformation Day, we will celebrate the

end of our mortgage debt, rededicate our church building and sit for a catered dinner.

At such an occasion it is proper to remember the past, celebrate the present and con-

template our future.

For the past 6 years we have looked carefully at our church building and grounds. In

doing so, many renovations and upkeep have been done due to your generosity. Next

year thanks to the savings of our debt reduction, we will replace the shingled roofing

of the church along with some other additions and renovations. When all of this is

done, St. Luke will be in a position to call a full-time pastor who will be able to

devote all his or her time to ministry. However, before that happens this congregation

must come together and create a vision of ministry that augurs well for the future of

speaking the gospel.

And so, I ask – can the enthusiasm of those people whose names appear on the charter

of St. Like be duplicated? I believe that it can happen and has already started. What

remains is for our congregation to come together with one voice as we gather for future

meetings to discuss our hopes and remember that our names are now the ones who

carry forth the vision of those charter members who signed their names to give us what

we have today at St. Luke.

In Christ,

Pastor Fred

Pastor Fred’s hours are

Wednesdays 9:30am to 2:30pm.

Pastor Fred’s Mid-week Bible Study Pastor Fred’s Mid-week Bible Study is a scripture discussion every Wednesday morning, from 10:30am - 11:30am. He will continue using a variety of study methods so we can delve into the text to discover new insights in how the words speak over the centuries and into our own time. There is no need to bring a Bible - we have plenty here to work with. Classes will continue every week at 10:30am on Wednesday mornings. Please come out and join us!!

Would you like to be part of our Worship Service?

Sunday Worship services are a very important part of our church life here at St. Luke. Every Sunday, our church members participate in our worship service as Acolytes, Assisting Ministers, Crucifers and Ushers. We also have Altar Guild members who set up for Sunday services, Altar Bread Bakers, Chancel Choir members, Bell Choir members, Musicians and many other Committee Members who serve the Lord and St. Luke by providing their time, talents and energy.

If you are interested in serving and would like more information about these or other opportunities to be a part of our Worship Ministry, we would love to hear from you.

Please contact Pastor Fred Marcoux or Vince Reedinger for more information. You’ll be glad you did!

Flower Dedications

The Ministry of flowers is an important part of the

Sunday Service at St. Luke Lutheran. Flowers are

used to beautify our sanctuary and are a gift to God

and those who attend worship services.

Altar flowers may be dedicated to “The Glory of

God”, “In Memory of” a loved one or “In Honor

of” a special person, an anniversary, birthday,

birth, baptism or other special event. More than

one person may find a certain date important so flowers may be

given in more than one name on any given Sunday.

If you would like to donate and dedicate flowers for any Sunday

service, arrangements cost $27.00 each. You will be billed directly

from Coleman Brothers Flowers and the flowers will be delivered

to the church. The flowers are yours to take home after the service

that Sunday or you can ask that they be taken to one of our ill or

homebound members. Please sign up on the flower chart located in

the fellowship hall.

Please contact the church office or Jean Stewart if you have any

questions. Thank you.

Do you have something for the Newsletter?

The Nov. 2017 Newsletter Deadline is Oct. 20. Please call in or e-mail in your submissions with your all of your September meeting dates and notices to Tammy in the church office as soon as possible. Thanks! 804-272-0486, [email protected].

2018 Flower Calendar

The 2018 Flower Calendar is now up in the fellowship hall. To those of you who give flowers every year during the same time frame, thank you. If you’re new to St. Luke or haven’t signed up yet to provide Sunday altar flowers, won’t you consider doing so ? Flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday. If your date seems to be taken, please sign up anyway or call the church office to do so. If you would like more information about our Flower Calendar or if you have any questions about Altar Flowers, please contact Tammy in the church office at 804-272-0486 or [email protected]. You can also contact Jean Stewart, our sacristan, at 804-276-2690. Thank you.

The 2018 Congregation Council elections will be held in October 1, 2017. Our church bylaws allow open nominations from the congregation during the final three Sundays leading up to the election. NEW PHONE SYSTEM

Dear St Luke members,

On September 27, 2017, we had a new phone

system installed by Verizon. It is very different

than our previous system.

We ask that you please bear with us as we learn

the ins and outs of how it works. Please be

advised that this phone system has different

automated messages and extension numbers

than we previously had.

Thank you.,

Tammy Hammond
