Letter from the Manse

Dear All I was talking to a couple of people in church when there was a plop sound and I realised that the paper clip that was holding together a pile of papers I was carrying, had pinged and landed in the cup of tea I was drinking. We all thought it was funny and laughed. Just an example of the good sense of humour that is needed in life and certainly is alive and well in St Mark's! Laughter for 10 minutes a day (not all at once) can help us health wise on an emotional, spiritual and physical level, as can taking a break from the normal routine. Just sitting in the garden or park can make such a difference to us. I think we are fortunate to have such beautiful parks here in Aberdeen. In this season of holidays, adventures and rest or whatever you are doing I prayerfully wish you a good time. If the present weather continues it may prove to be a good hot Summer. Even if it isn't we will be able to enjoy the Church Saturday Coffee Mornings, the Garden Party and the Open Afternoons at the Manse. The open afternoons will be on the 18th and 19th of June between 1 o'clock and 4 o'clock. There will be refreshments and good company. Everyone welcome, free tickets available from the office or Diane very soon. Dave and myself have started to work on the manse garden and as the years go by we hope that everyone will see the progress we make. At the moment the slugs are having a feast, so some old but well tested remedies have just been adopted! Gardens are great places to relax, unwind or lose ourselves for awhile in creation. It is perhaps no coincidence that Earth is called God's garden. Continued on page 4

Continued from page 3

There is a wonderful song written from God's perspective called 'Do you like my garden?' Jesus took rest and play as seriously as He took completing His Ministry on Earth. I am sure He laughed a great deal too! In His actions Jesus Christ teaches and shows us the importance of work/play balance. He didn't spend His life working all the time, neither should we or we just become tired, irritable and fed up. So the message for this season is - rest and play and enjoy the Summer!

God Bless You Diane

Summer Coffee Mornings

The Saturday Coffee Morning’s have started and will continue every Saturday morning from 10am to 1pm until the beginning of September.

Please come along and bring your friends, your support is what makes these events a success and, as always, your donations of home baking and raffle prizes will be gratefully received.

Probably the best value in Aberdeen! .. .. .. .. .. .. ..

St Mark’s Website

Have you been online and looked at the website? St Mark’s is fortunate in having a very talented ‘webmaster’ who keeps the site ‘bang’ up-to-date. It’s not just a brief outline but a description of everything we do, the organisations within the church and the groups who use the church, the Aberdeen City Centre Grouping, The Messenger on line, check the rotas, view photos of church events, STOP - I wont go on, have a look for yourself, you might be surprised at how good it is..........

The Strollers Once again as is our custom in the summer months, the Strollers will be venturing further afield. The first of these outings was to Port Elphinstone when we did a circular tour, walking along the bank of the river for a short distance then returning by another way. We plan to go for walks - such places as Stonehaven, Ellon, Banchory and Kemnay in the months ahead. Please feel free to join us on any of the following dates. You will be made very welcome.

Life and Work is the magazine of the Church of Scotland (£15.90 annually) and the May issue mentioned Aberdeen. It is a ‘good read’, there are personal articles, it is informative, maybe explaining ‘things’ about the Church of Scotland you wondered about, and writers views, and whether you agree or not with all that is written it may spur you on to write your own letter to the magazine’s letter’s page. If you would like to order your copy ask your Elder or enquire in church on a Sunday.

6

The Guild Of Friendship When you read this, we will have finally ‘closed’ for the summer break, having had our high tea at the Ashvale on the 6th June. We shall restart on Monday, 3rd October 2011, when we hope to see all the familiar faces and perhaps a few ‘new’ ones. Details of what goes on at Guild of Friendship can be had by telephoning me. Wishing you all a sunny summer.

Pat Skene 01224 642293

Projects Committee The Garden Party will be held on Sunday 17th July in Alex McConochie’s garden, tickets will be available a few weeks before the date. Although it was decided that the last Charity Shop was to be the LAST, we have had so much good bric-a-brac donated to the Church that we have decided to have the shop again. We have been allocated the week beginning 12th September. If you have any good clothes and bric-a-brac please bring them along to the Church or ‘phone me at 575663.

“The Church is always asking for money”. Perhaps that’s something you have said yourself and, as Treasurer, I can agree that perhaps it does. In fact I have started my piece in the last two editions of the Messenger with these very words.

Why then am I using them again? Well it’s not because I am asking for your money. Instead I want you to give what you are currently giving, but give it differently. When we joined the church we all made vows to attend regularly and to give regularly, of our time, talents and money. Do you still do so? Are you in church every Sunday, do you help out at coffee mornings, with the cleaning rota, or doing beadle duties, or read the lesson or are you too busy? Too many other calls on your time, bowling, golf, gardening, shopping, DIY etc? Even if you cannot be in church every Sunday you can still keep your vow to support your church - yes your church - each and every Sunday of the year. In this magazine there is a simple form you can fill out and send to me. By making your offering by Standing Order your support for St Mark’s can be made on a regular basis even if you cannot be in church. Most folk using the Standing Order form give monthly but you can choose to give weekly or even annually, it’s your choice. And if you are a taxpayer please consider giving by Gift Aid, it will cost you nothing, just ask me for a form or download one from our website www.stmarksaberdeen.org.uk. I’m not asking for anything you haven’t already promised to do. I’m just asking that you do it differently. Even if you come to church every week a Standing Order will save money as we will need to buy fewer FWO envelopes. It’s up to you.

Circle of Care

The members and visitors of the Circle of Care are grateful to Malcolm and Betty Steel for organising the Palm Sunday afternoon Communion and Tea and to the O.A.K. Café staff for providing such lovely eats. An Easter Egg was given to everyone and the gift brought a smile to many faces. It was a very happy occasion and we also thank the volunteer drivers, the Minister and Pianist for their part in making it so.

The St Mark’s Rambling and Walking Group

Since the last magazine article the ramblers have been bitten by the walking bug and have done three walks. The first was a short walk alongside the River Don from Seaton Park to Persley Bridge and return. The second was a walk from the bus station along the banks of the river Dee and up to Tollohill woods on the Causeymount Road. It was a nice walk and it was pleasing to be joined by some new walkers.

The Royal Cairns walk that was planned for Thursday 21st April was changed at short notice to a bus run to Stonehaven and walk through Dunnottar woods to the Castle and back to Stonhaven. The mist didn’t lift much on this walk and we couldn’t see the Castle it was so thick. It was nice to get out and stretch the legs and if you would like to join us on any of the planned walks please contact Ian Lord on (01224) 321882 or mobile 07929720846

The following are planned walks through the summer and a copy of this can be picked up from the OAK cafe or from Church vestibule on a Sunday morning.

O.A.K We enjoyed wonderful fellowship with the Circle of Care members and some of The Crown Terrace Methodist congregation on Palm Sunday afternoon. Our sincere thanks go to Margaret Donald for organising the invitations and transport, to all the drivers, to Rev Diane for an uplifting service and to all the ladies for all the home bakes and catering. We look forward to our next Special Lunch on 9th June in aid of the local branch of the Spina Bifida Association and one on 22nd September. We look forward to seeing all our friends again. When everyone else is thinking of the summer holidays you can be sure O.A.K. has other thoughts! What about the Christmas Shoebox Appeal? We have had such support in the past and I know some folk are knitting and gathering gifts together already. Our closing date for gifts will be 30th October, 2011. This gives us time for packing and The New Hope Trust time for transportation. Gifts may be brought to the Café, Monday to Friday or to the Church on Sunday. Our Evening Services continue throughout the summer at Crown Terrace Methodist Church at 6.30pm on the second Sunday of each month. All are very welcome. We hope you all have a very restful holiday and look forward to seeing you on your return. Betty & Malcolm Steel

The Drama Group

One of the problems of writing for a deadline that is well before an event takes place is what to say about that event. So it is with the St Mark’s Players Spring Play which was performed on 20 and 21 May. No doubt the shows went well and the audiences appreciated the effort that went in to producing them. At least we are guaranteed that the Farmhouse Tea went well! There’s a similar difficulty with writing about the junior section’s performance on 24 and 25 June. Stage Door take over the stage on these two evenings to present a show that, at this moment of writing I know absolutely nothing about! I can say however, from previous experience, the show, whatever it will be, will be first class - what else? Whether it tells a story or brings together a musical collection of old and new songs or even a mix of both and more I know you will like it, so get your tickets now! And even if I’m wrong (and I won’t be) you will enjoy the Farmhouse Tea, Cabaret Supper, Light Refreshments or whatever else is served up at the interval - you always do! Break a leg.

After Service Discussion On Sunday 9th April, after the morning service, about 20 members met in the Hall for a packed lunch followed by a group discussion. Diane led the discussion and two questions were asked which resulted in some thoughtful input. One of the questions was given a definitive answer and the other was left ‘hanging’ as there were divided views and some members interpreted the Bible in different ways. It was a thought p r o v o k i n g a n d interesting time and it was agreed to hold another Discussion G r o u p i n a p p r o x i m a t e l y 5 weeks. If anyone has a question to which they would like an answer, go along to the discussion and ask. It’s not a certainty that you will get an answer or the answer you were looking for, but hopefully you will enjoy listening to the input from the assembled group. Everyone welcome !

magazine went to print)

PRAYER

“The Devil mocks our activism, scoffs at our strategies, sniggers at our general assemblies, laughs at our kirk session agendas, rejoices at our divisions, but trembles when we pray.”

This paraphrased quote is taken from ‘The Road to Growth (towards a thriving church)’ by Anglican vicar

and freelance church consultant Rev. Bob Jackson.

Bob continues: “The resurgence of the Church nationally will be underpinned by groups in every place praying their hearts out to God for the strengthening of the local Church through the gift of new Christians and the growth of new disciples.”

But he warns: “Prayer. . . is not a soft option. Jesus sweated blood when he prayed (Luke 22:44).” There are also obstacles to prayer and excuses for not praying.

No time? I have so much to do that I spend several hours in prayer before I am able to do it. - John Wesley

I must secure more time for private devotions. I have been living far too public for me. The shortening of devotions starves the soul; it grows lean and faint. I have been keeping too late hours. - William Wilberforce

No words? In prayer, it is better to have a heart without words than words without a heart. - John Bunyan

God does not stand afar off as I struggle to speak. He cares enough to listen with more than casual attention. He translates my scrubby words and hears what is truly inside. He hears my sighs and uncertain gropings as fine prose. - Timothy Jones

No response? When I pray, coincidences happen, and when I don't pray, they don't. - William Temple There are more tears shed over answered prayers than over unanswered prayers. -Teresa of Avila

No need? I have been driven many times to my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had absolutely no other place to go. - Abraham Lincoln

21

Prayer is not so much an act as it is an attitude—an attitude of dependency, dependency upon God. - Arthur W. Pink I was greatly encouraged recently to go into St Mark’s splendid website and see a link to daily devotional films that were being broadcast during Lent by 24-7 Prayer. This is an international, inter-denominational movement of prayer, mission and justice that began with a single, student-led prayer vigil in Chichester in 1999 and has spread, by word-of-mouth, into 100+ nations. My prayer is that St Mark’s will take up the challenge of developing a fervent, flourishing and fruitful prayer life – individual and collective. The Church has not yet touched the fringe of the possibilities of intercessory prayer. Her largest victories will be witnessed when individual Christians everywhere come to recognize their priesthood unto God and day by day give themselves unto prayer. - John R. Mott

Organisers of Celebrate Aberdeen are aiming to make it the biggest and brightest opportunity there has ever been to highlight the impact of the voluntary (Third) sector in our city.

The focus of the event will be a spectacular parade of Third Sector organisations down Union Street on Saturday, 11th June.

The City Centre Parish Grouping is taking part, complete with a flag and two banners, and we hope to have 30 to 40 fun-filled adults and children representing us on the day.

One of our banners will include a ‘short impact statement’ reading: ‘Distributors of the Big Issue – showing Christian compassion for the homeless in our city centre.’

A mass of runners will start off from Harlaw Academy at 11am, followed by the parade proper, led by Lord Provost Peter Stephen.

Thousands of spectators will be entertained by opera singers, pipers, cheer leaders, martial artists, line dancers, mascots and samba dancers.

We hope to have musical accompaniment as we make our way along Union Street. Ideas, please, to Ian McIver on 07890 932677 or [email protected]

Over 1.2 million people in Scotland are involved in some form of volunteering or voluntary action, contributing the equivalent of £52 million per annum to our economy.

There are over 800 volunteer opportunities in Aberdeen alone, with over 44,000 volunteers contributing more than 3.7 million volunteer hours every year across the city.

“Without the Third Sector, our city and our country would be very much worse off,” said a spokeswoman for Celebrate Aberdeen.

“2011, the European Year of Volunteering, is the perfect time to celebrate how volunteers give of their time and talents to help themselves and their fellow citizens.” Ian McIver
