Pastor’s Corner
My Dear Friends,
This Saturday and Sunday, from 9-1,
you are invited to take part in the St.
Mary-Tileston Social Outreach Yard
Sale. Sales will benefit the excellent
work Sr. Isaac and her associates do
in helping the less fortunate of our
Wilmington community.
Next Saturday, April 12th,
SaludHondu will host “One Cup of Tea” in the Upper Room 1871.
SaludHondu is the fundraising branch of our St. Mary Sister Parish
Ministry that seeks to raise funds for the health-care projects of our sister
parish in Honduras. The event will be held from 2-4 p.m.
You will be interested to learn that Padre Gerardo, pastor of our sister
parish in Reitoca, and the mayors of the 5 municipios (larger towns) of our
sister parish recently met with the new President of Honduras. The
president promised Fr. Gerardo 3 things: (1) to pave the road from the Pan
American Highway to Reitoca; (2) to provide medicines for the new parish
clinic in La Libertad; and (3) to help restore the historic Catholic churches
in Reitoca, Alubarén, and Curarén. We’ll be watching this closely.
Currently it takes 1 hour to drive on wild, unpaved mountain roads from
the Pan American Highway to Reitoca. If this were paved, it would be an
amazing game-changer in the region. For the first time, companies could
conceivably think of bringing business to Reitoca and the other 4
municipios of our sister parish. That would be wonderful as the people
desperately would love to work, but currently jobs are very scarce.
On Good Friday, April 18th, the St. Mary Hispanic community will have a
live Via Crucis or Stations of the Cross. Included will be the 15th Station –
the Resurrection. Even if you do not speak Spanish, you should find this a
very moving experience. Children, especially, learn much from this
pageant.
Above is a scene from one of St. Mary’s past Good Friday’s Via Crucis.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Father Bob

“A Stitch….A Prayer….The Touch of God” Our Prayer Shawl ministry offers warmth and the mes-sage of God’s blessings to those in need of comfort. Members of this ministry knit and crochet special shawls and blankets that receive a pastoral blessing. These hand-made items are made available to anyone experi-encing a physical or emotional crisis. Recipients realize
that they are not alone but are wrapped in the love and power of God. Some Prayer Shawl Ministry members do their knitting and crocheting at regular meetings (10:00am on the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays each month) others prefer to work exclusively from home. This ministry is open to anyone with willing hands. You don’t have to be a mem-ber of Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary. You don’t even have to know how to knit or crochet! We will show you how. Call Noreen at 798-0055 for more information on this wonderful ministry. If you know of anyone who needs the warmth and comfort of a prayer shawl, call Noreen and she will make arrangements to get one to you. Again, you or the recipient need not be a member of our congregation. God's love and comfort is for all.
Eucharistic Ministers and Lectors are needed for
all masses. If interested in joining this ministry,
please contact Stephanie Watts at: 799-7623 or

Norms for Fasting and Abstinence Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence. Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of absti-nence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, Church law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the Parish Priest should be consulted.

Pope Francis to Canonize Blessed
John XXIII and John Paul II on
April 27, 2014
Divine Mercy Sunday
The Conclaves, Names and Mottos
of John XXIII and John Paul II
John XXIII
Pope Pius XII died in October of 1958. He had been Pope for nearly 20 years. Now Cardinals from around the world journeyed to Rome to choose his successor. As he was leaving Venice, the now 76-year-old Cardinal Roncalli heard someone wish him, “Good luck!” The Cardinal laughed. “The best luck that could happen to me would be to return here in two weeks,” he said.
We remember Pope John XXIII as smiling and open, but this veteran diplomat was never naïve. Before the doors closed on the Conclave to elect a Pope, Cardinal Roncalli realized that his peers considered him a strong candidate. It took four days and eleven ballots, however, before the crowd in Saint Peter’s Square saw white smoke. Inside the Sistine Chapel, Cardinal Roncalli received the formal request, “Do you accept election?” He responded, “At the sound of your voice, ‘I am made to tremble, and I fear’ (Ps. 119).” But with great humility, he accepted.
John XXIII was the first pope to take the name of “John” in more than 500 years. The name “John” had become associated with a famous anti-pope, so previous Popes had avoided it. “I choose John...,” Cardinal Roncalli said, “a name sweet to us because it is the name of our father, dear to me because it is the name of the humble parish church where I was baptized, the solemn name of numberless cathedrals scattered throughout the world, including our own basilica St. John Lateran.” He chose as his motto Obedientia et Pax (Obedience and Peace). “If peace was the outward hallmark of Pope John, obedience constituted his inner disposition,” said Pope Francis on the 50th anniversary of Pope John’s death. John XXIII’s coat of arms features a Lion, representing the evan-gelist Saint Mark, the patron saint of Venice, where Cardinal Roncalli had been Patriarch before the Conclave.

Fifth Sunday of Lent Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary – April 5 and April 6, 2014 6
Fifth Sunday of Lent—Social Ministry
These past weeks we have seen how Jesus feeds us, quenches
our thirst, and opens our eyes as we journey towards Him. Today He
brings Lazarus back to life – a foreshadowing of not only His resurrection
from the dead, but ours also.
Last Saturday I participated in a program prepared by the social
ministry team of St. Jude the Apostle in Hampstead. It was on the issue of
Hunger—thousands right here in our area, especially women and children,
experience hunger on a daily basis. To have us have an experience of
hunger, the program closed with a lunch where we could all see and feel
the effects of the inequality that exists and is one of the causes of hunger.
When we entered the room, each one of us received a colored
ticket. We were about 70+ in attendance. Those with blue tickets were
asked to stand. 5 people rose to their feet, and some teenagers from the
parish served them at the table where they were seated, with baked ziti,
salad, rolls, tea, etc. Then those with yellow tickets stood. We were about
14 and we were invited to a table with a yellow cloth and told to serve
ourselves with rice, beans, fresh vegetables and a drink. This group
represented the middle class in our neighborhoods. The remaining 55
lined up and served themselves with a bowl of rice. What more needs to
be said? While we were eating we discussed prepared topics which helped
us deepen the experience. This is our society today and why Jesus calls us
to serve one another and work towards a better distribution of our earth’s
goods.
Lent is a time of journeying, just like the Israelites walked with
Moses through the desert, with eyes fixed on a promised land. How is my
journey going?
Office of Social Ministry Sister Isaac
RCIA
Our members continue to search their hearts, and we
also are encouraged to “scrutinize” how our journey is
going. To help us along, our elect received the Our
Father at our session on Saturday. We will be on Re-
treat next Saturday so we count on your prayers.

Our next show on Carolina Catholic will feature the work of SaludHondu, a Wil-mington based fundraising organization that serves the healthcare needs of over 50,000 people in Honduras, the majority of whom are children with previously little or no access to healthcare. In this show, we will hear about the work of local volunteers and Fr. Bob Kus who take their time and talents to Honduras to help the poor and sick. We will speak with Penny Cromer and Millie Moore. Penny is the chairperson for "One Cup of Tea" to fill the cup of many in need, a fundraiser to be held in the Upper Room 1871, 412 Ann Street, in historic downtown Wil-mington from 2-4 PM. And Millie Moore, Spanish teacher at St. Mary Catholic School, has been to the mission church in Honduras. This exciting show will air Sunday April 6th at 6:00 pm. April 6, 2014 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In April of each year, our nation highlights how we are all called to cre-ate and maintain a safe environment for our children and young people. As your Bishop, I invite you to join me in renewing the commitment to ensure a safe environment through the many initiatives used to guide our parishes and ministries throughout our Diocese, as well as those which guide parents in their sacred vocation to educate and form their children in the gift of our Catholic faith. Every year, through our Diocesan Office of Child and Youth Protection, over 2,000 adults receive training on how to ensure a safe environment, as well as how to properly recognize and report child abuse and neglect. I extend my gratitude to all of our priests and consecrated religious, the members of our Diocesan Safe Environment Committee, our Diocesan Review Board, the staff of our parishes, our catechists and volunteers that each serve as a witness to our commitment to this important endeav-or. Our Lord has given us the gift of our Catholic faith and the blessing of children, in whom we are called to foster those vocations which will bear witness to our faith in Jesus Christ. May the Holy Family continue to watch over and guide us in this work, in union with the Heart of Our Lord Jesus, now and always. Sincerely in Christ, Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge Bishop of Raleigh
