Yes, we know we wrote about this topic here in the last issue. We have consciously decided to mention it again because developing a binder slo-gan – a core message to stand for the entire binder Group – is of central importance for marketing. We are looking for a slogan that will help us position ourselves clearly – as an attrac-

tive employer, as a brand that gets noticed beyond the world of connectors and as a trendsetter within the industry. In the future, our slogan will be a pillar of our communica-tions strategy, increasing binder’s recogni-tion value.

Dear readers,

At the end of March, during a small ceremony under glorious blue skies, we officially laid the foundation stone for our new building. I have been waiting for this day to come for a long time – as, I believe, has everyone at binder. The new building is a milestone for development at our Neckarsulm site, where we are investing in the future of our company. Growth is levelling off now after years of out-standing results. We will be reviewing our internal organisational structure before the end of the year to make sure that, in this area as in others, we are up to date, modern and dynamic. In terms of our medium- and long-term orientation, we have de-fined strategic pillars and associated targets, and we are working in a sustained manner to ensure their operational implementation. You will find plenty to interest you in this issue, including a wide-ranging interview with the binder industry managers, an exciting overview of our ca-ble production operations, insights into the world of the binder test facility and updates from our sales subsidiaries in China, Austria, the Netherlands and France.

Enjoy reading this issue! Sincerely,

Markus Binder, General Manager

MilestoneThe new building will be 125 m long, 68 m wide and 26 m high and is being constructed in two phases. The first phase was launched with the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone. For Markus Binder, the new building is a milestone and a central com-ponent within the company’s future strategy: ‘With the new building, we can safeguard binder’s future in the long term, while also making sure we con-tinue to meet the needs of our customers and the market. Most importantly, however, we are focusing even more intensively on the well-being of our em-ployees and creating innovative structures.’

An innovative new building is under construction at binder’s Rötelstraße site. It will provide space for production and logistics operations as well as offices, spaces for socialising and a cafeteria. The new building will safeguard the compa-ny’s economically sustainable growth and will also pave the way for new jobs. binder has appointed Vollack, a specialist in methodic building design based in Karlsruhe, to design, plan and build the new headquarters.

itating more efficient processes. The first construc-tion phase, scheduled for completion in 2020, will also include a new logistics area with receiving and shipping of goods and a high-bay warehouse as well as a cafeteria with a roof terrace and spaces for socialising. At the end of the second construction phase, scheduled for 2023, the employees stand to benefit from state-of-the-art office environments with attractive, ergonomic workspaces.

I am happy that this new building is also a credible way of putting our two-pillar strategy

into operation: On the one hand, we are system-atically pursuing a policy of internationalisation in order to expand the Group’s global presence step

by step. On the other hand, we are making sustainable investments at our company head-quarters in Neckarsulm, as we can already see.

A perfect fit for the company’s business processesThe partnership for constructing the new building started with the NULL® phase of the Vollack meth-od. ‘We looked closely at binder’s corporate culture

and working practices so we could create a tai-lor-made solution,’ says Dirk Baumbach, a partner at Vollack. The building experts used this method to draw up a customised profile of requirements in consultation with binder, based on the work pro-cesses and the corporate strategy.

All four of them work in product management at binder,

and for quite a while all four of them have been charged

with the task of taking scrupulous care of a specific sector.

Jana Wagner, Ebru Cosgun, Franziska Matscheko and Stef-

fen Nitsche are industry managers at binder.

Patrick Heckler completed his

training in industrial management in

2018 at binder and is now studying

The heart is in it

To explain what exactly is behind this, which sec-tors are being focused on and why the binder in-dustry manager is an indispensable part of the company’s future orientation, they were told at the end of February: You have an interview with the verbinder Editorial department.

What was your first thought when Head of Sales Werner Fröhlich approached you with the idea of putting one person each in charge of the food and beverage, medicine, railway and traffic technology as well as construction and agricul-tural machines industries? Cosgun: I really liked the idea right away. This allows each one of us to handle the specific mar-kets. As a result, we can also deal with the develop-ment of specific connectors they need.

Matscheko: I have a similar take on that. This strategy allows us to serve niches which seem very promising to us in a more focused way. Plus, it en-ables us to determine the exact demands in the re-spective market.

they are in direct contact with the end customers. We expect that this knowledge transfer will enable us to develop even more ‘tailor-made’ products in the future and to make the entire development pro-cess more transparent.

Are there projects which you can talk about here? Wagner: We want to expand the product port-folio in the medicine industry. With the ELC (Easy Locking Connector), we have launched a novel product for medicine-related industries. Plus, just recently we had an internal audit according to ISO 13485, which makes us even more competitive. Soon we will also revise our medicine brochure and try to attend even more specific trade fairs in the medicine sector.

Nitsche: I want us to become established in the construction and agricultural machines industry and to be able to make better use of our opportu-nities. The industry is currently undergoing a pro-cess of technologisation and digitisation. For us as one of the components suppliers this is of course a great opportunity to carry out new projects to-gether with end customers. Currently, for example, we are working on a camera project in the field of construction machines.

Matscheko: First of all, we want to further es-tablish ourselves in the railway technology sector. For quite a while, for instance, modularisation has been an issue in the railway industry with great po-

Nitsche: An excellent idea, because we can now address the customers’ needs even better.

Wagner: The four target industries were already determined a while ago, and now people have a di-rect contact, which is important internally and ex-ternally. We want to uncover ‘dormant’ potentials in our respective industry.

Do you see further advantages? Cosgun: Sure – we have more foresight in our work, are proactive rather than ‘waiting’ until cus-tomers approach us with a specific request.

How has your day-to-day work changed? Matscheko: Trade fairs like InnoTrans in my field are enormously important for ‘my’ industry. For me, showing up in person and being in contact with prospective customers is one of the crucial means to get ahead.

Wagner: We get continuing education in our specific industry field. It is important to absorb all kinds of information. There are various trade fairs, training courses or committees on the respective industry, but you also get valuable information via the ZVEI, the German Electrical and Electronic Man-ufacturers’ Association. But ultimately it is like with so many things: you learn by doing.

What does learning by doing mean in this context? Wagner: It was the four of us who were appoint-ed industry managers, but it has quickly affected the entire company. Customer queries reach us via Customer Service or the key account managers. We must then coordinate this information in-house with the different departments, whose staff mem-bers then obviously also become experts in the in-dustries.

Nitsche: For us as product managers it is im-portant to get our sales partners – that is to say, for-eign branches and distributors – on board, because PH

tential for us as one of the suppliers of connectors. To make even better use of this for us, our products must meet this sector’s existing requirements. We are working flat out on that.

Cosgun: In the food and beverage industry, we are working on implementing the general manda-tory requirements of the F & B connectors even bet-ter so we meet existing standards for ‘strict zones’.

Meaning what exactly? Cosgun (laughs): We must optimise our con-nectors for the so-called product contact zones where connectors come in contact with food. More specifically, take for instance the production of cookies, where you have no leeway when it comes to hygiene. You stir, form, bake, transport and pack things, and eventually the system must also be cleaned. Connectors play an important part in all these different processes and are constantly ‘in the middle of things’. They must be designed and built in a way that makes cleaning easy, too, without leaving any residues.

Why is this step towards individual care in the industries you have mentioned so important? Cosgun: Quite simply: because without it, this would have enormous disadvantages for binder, we would without doubt no longer be up to date. Re-quirements are becoming more and more specific and individual, ever stricter regulations and laws are being enacted with which you have to become familiar. We must offer more than the plain stand-ard, otherwise the market will overtake us. PH

Matscheko: What’s nice about it is that we are basically in good shape at binder and ‘only’ have to modify many connectors to serve these indus-tries. For example, we are currently checking the M12 to see which other codings we can offer that complement our product portfolio in the area of data transmission in a way that makes sense. In this way, we want to create solutions for different applications concerning railways, for instance for display systems.

Have the new responsibilities also changed your view of some things, for example in everyday life? Nitsche: Yes, and I can tell you a little anecdote about this: I recently took a guided tour of a Black Forest farm and subconsciously paid more atten-tion to the machines than to the hay cart. And I noticed that connectors from the MSD series were installed – it’s really crazy.

Wagner: I go through life looking at things dif-ferently. Girlfriends of mine work at a hospital, and when we get together we sometimes also talk about the equipment at the hospital in which con-nectors are installed.

Cosgun: When I go shopping I keep wondering what the process behind the production of food items might be. Where could binder connectors

be used? How is the F & B market developing and which developments can I therefore push in the field of component suppliers?

To wrap things up: how much did you ‘fight’ about the different industry sectors? (Laughter) Cosgun: Not at all. I wanted to work in precisely this industry sector, it interests me tremendously, my heart is in it. I have always observed how the food market develops, especially in my private life. I am therefore quite happy to be able to combine my personal interest and my job.

Matscheko: I can only confirm this. True, I hap-pen to have been with binder the least amount of time, but if I could have chosen an industry sector for myself, this is precisely what it would have been.

Wagner: In my case it was clear relatively soon, because I already handle the customer-specific products of the 955 series as product manager and most of these connectors are delivered to medical customers. In this connection, I had already attend-ed a few medical trade shows, too. Nitsche: I am crazy about big machines, there-fore I find my industry sector totally exciting. When you look at the construction site of our new build-ing, you can see the things machines can move and shape, I find that fascinating.

With this issue, we continue our reading series on the subject of historical product developments in which we present special product de- velopments in binder history, developments that are not commonplace. How did cer- tain projects come to be car- ried out? Which application areas were in demand? What were the quantities?

Reading series:

Text Dieter Fink

Dieter Fink joined binder in 1977 as

a development design engineer and, starting in

1980, he was responsible for the Design and

Development de-partment (T-KB) for 37 years. He retired in 2018.

Since production of circular connectors began in 1968, binder

has made a name for itself all over the world in terms of quality,

among other things. Many product series have continuously

been in demand for decades and are a proven source of revenue.

But the individual development of connectors based on

customer requests is also part of ‘binder DNA’.

16-contact radio equipment connector from AEG

The 16-contact radio equipment connector for the Teleport 9 was developed for the AEG company in Ulm in 1983. The mobile telephone and data radio unit was designed to transmit news (speech and data) in all areas of land and sea mobile radio ser-vice. Due to the chosen electrical and mechanical design, the unit was particularly suited for use by service providers, agencies and organisations with security duties. The 16-contact special connector was posi-tioned on the rear side of the radio unit. The unit could be operated as a mobile or stationary device in a vehicle mount. However, there was also a re-quirement that the contact must be made directly in the vehicle mount, i.e. without removing protec-tive elements. Moreover, during mobile operation without the telephone apparatus, the contacts of the female panel mount connector were supposed to be protected by a spring-mounted cap with a function for switching into the respective operation mode. In order to meet these requirements, a new connector system with concentrically arranged

Connectors for radio equipment

In the 1980s, with its customer-specific connec-tors, binder was represented among all well-known radio equipment manufacturers. Among others, these included Storno, Peiker, AEG and Bosch. As an example, this issue presents the

developments for AEG Ulm and Bosch Berlin.

It was also the model for our NCC standard connector of the 770 series in 2008. More special binder products were used in the Teleport 9: for example, an antenna switching socket and various 18-contact coding connectors or multi-programmers (91-0109-03-18). 12/20-contact radio connector from Bosch

The 12/20-contact radio connectors for KF 166 mo-bile radios were developed for Bosch in Berlin in 1988. The Bosch KF 166 mobile radio was designed for stationary installation in vehicles. The devic-es operated in the 2-meter radio band and were intended for use in non-public land mobile radio service. For this reason, the unit was particularly suited for use by service providers, agencies and organisations with security duties. The 12/20-contact special connector was posi-tioned on the front side of the radio unit. The unit was operated from a stationary vehicle mount; the connector consisted of a male angled connector and the respective female receptacle. Moreover, it was required that every contact of the female re-ceptacles be equipped with LC low-pass filters. That means that the low frequencies of a signal can pass unimpeded, while the high frequencies are very strongly damped. In nearly 50 years of sales partnership, Hubert Schroeter

It was the successful mix of the two business areas of sales representation and dis-tribution that provided the basis for the company’s ad-

vance to new growth markets, also with its strategic partner binder. Even back in the 1970s, binder’s portfolio complement-ed Schroeter’s existing product range, which can be found on the requirements lists of North-ern German customers.

Growth, growth, growthToday, Schroeter’s linecard com-prises a number of companies from the market segments of electrical engineering and elec-tronics as well as control and au-tomation technology. Schroeter

regards itself as part of binder’s sales organisation, which makes its relationship with the connec-tor specialist a particularly close one. The company is now already in the third generation as a fam-ily business. Due to the contin-uous expansion of distribution services and the growing need for space that came with rising sales, Schroeter has had to move into new premises three times within Hamburg, but has always remained faithful to the city’s north. The spatial expansion strategy continued even beyond the Northern German sales area. As early as in 2000, a sales branch was opened in Lower Saxony, and in 2003, a sales office was estab-lished in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Special solutions realisedSchroeter supplies binder’s ex-tensive standard OEM product range via its central distribution in Hamburg. Customers are of-fered logistics concepts such as Kanban or just-in-time delivery. A broad product portfolio and high product availability of bind-er components at the main com-pany building in Hamburg are a prerequisite for the company’s business success. The support of our cooperation partners allows us to deliver individual cable productions and meet associat-ed special requests according to customer specifications. In close collaboration with binder we have been able to develop cus-tomer-specific special solutions with added value for customers. In the past, for instance, a req-uisitor in the market segment of switchgears and control tech-nology employed female power connectors, but once in a while experienced problems with moisture in the connector hous-ing. Here we were able to devel-op, jointly with binder, a solution with an injection-moulded cable which also took the customer’s special requirements regarding

the cable into consideration and, as an additional benefit, eliminated the need to produce a special cable.

Lasting successesThanks to their coverage of the entire Northern German sales area and their regional proximi-ty to the customers, Schroeter’s field sales representatives also refer high-volume, consulta-tion-intensive project queries to binder. What with customer rela-tionships that have grown over many years, the clear division of tasks and the consultation com-petence regarding binder com-ponents which Schroeter has de-veloped over the decades have resulted in joint successes, even among small and medium-sized requisitors. Schroeter is placing a focus on customer care and its field sales team. ‘binder needs a strong, experienced local sales

certification.’ The collaboration with binder and the synergies between both divisions turn out to be advantageous in various respects. On the one hand, pro-jects which for different reasons cannot be covered via distribu-tion can be handled as part of the sales agency business in or-der to secure the business, also to the benefit of binder. On the other hand, customers previous-ly handled by the sales agency division may be taken over by the distribution division, for in-stance when they want logistics concepts or deliveries in smaller batch sizes. We are pleased to note that, since 2016, we have been able to further expand the decades of successful sales activities with the binder Group in the Northern German market by way of a part-nership with MPE Garry GmbH, a binder affiliated company, in the distribution sector. And so we all look forward to the further increasing market challenges and the upcoming 50 year anniversary of our partner-ship with binder in 2023.

partner who can successfully carry out the tasks set by the customer, sometimes with the help of binder’s contact per-sons, when required,’ explains Jürgen Ollech, authorised sig-natory of Schroeter, and adds: ‘Only regular on-site customer calls land us projects and gen-erate tomorrow’s sales through the associated design-in, in this way ensuring our joint and last-ing business success.’

Competent back officeA competent back office team at Schroeter complements the activities of the field sales team, offering solid information on binder’s entire service range. In the interest of its supply compa-nies, Schroeter thus subscribes to the corporate strategy of always being available for its customers and being able to provide information even when the field sales representatives are currently in meetings with other customers. To meet the rising market demands and make better use of the syner-gies among both divisions, a new, uniform CRM platform was introduced two years ago and the number of employees was increased. Schroeter moreover demonstrates the high quality of its services for both divisions via the annual certification accord-ing to DIN ISO 9001:2015. ‘At least in the electronics sector,’ Ollech remarks not without pride, ‘we are probably one of the few sales agencies that have this kind of PH

This solution has three key advantages: it is cost-ef-fective, flexible and scalable. Mobile data capture devices permanently speed up processes in the supply chain – at warehouses and production fa-cilities or during transportation. Since the mobile solution went operational at binder, workflows in logistics have changed markedly.

Clear requirements, impressed users20 handheld computers are already in use at the binder headquarters in Neckarsulm and there are plans to acquire a further 15. This successful solu-tion is currently being rolled out at the MPE-Garry site in Füssen as well. ‘We had the opportunity to

visit Neckarsulm and see the handheld computers and the processes, which are fully integrated into SAP. We’re very impressed,’ says Christian Linder, SAP key user at MPE-Garry in Füssen. The process of choosing the handheld computers took several months because a number of different models were initially evaluated. Both traditional models with a keyboard and devices without a keyboard were tri-alled. binder’s IT department clearly defined the re-quirements regarding the operating system: the de-vice should not be based on the outdated Windows Mobile 6.5 platform, but it must still be possible to integrate it into the existing hardware landscape. In the end, the Honeywell Dolphin CT60 was cho-

sen, which is based on the Android 7.1.1 operating system. This model can be operated without a key-board, much like a smartphone, and impressed staff in the Logistics department with its ease of use.

DataMatrix 2D code – standard within the binder GroupMobile devices enable data to be captured any-where by scanning 1D or 2D barcodes. With this in mind, the binder Group started developing a Data-Matrix 2D code based on the ANSI MH10.8.2 stand-ard back in 2017. This was subsequently introduced at the Neckarsulm site. In addition to the material number, quantity, production date and a unique number for each container, the binder 2D code in-cludes a wealth of other information. The content can also be scaled as needed. Ultimately, the aim is to roll out the binder bar-code at the affiliated companies too. The barcode supports all of the company’s internal logistics pro-cesses, such as the automatic receipt of incoming goods at the future new-build, provided the suppli-er complies with binder’s new labelling standard. The barcode is already used on the packaging for final products as well. Amongst other things, this improves traceability within the supply chain.

SAP ITSmobile – effective mobile workingA lot of software solutions initially collect data on the mobile device and synchronise the handheld unit with the SAP ERP system later. With ITSmobile, this information is logged and accessed in real time, ensuring seamless integration into the existing SAP system landscape. As a result, stock levels and re-ceipts are always up to date in the SAP system. The dialogues can be customised, which allows for intu-itive operation in line with binder’s processes. Both large, graphic buttons and acoustic error warnings can be realised with ease. This minimises incorrect entries. ‘With ITSmobile, we have found a perfect solution which far exceeds our requirements and expectations,’ explains Bernd Mager, Head of Logis-tics at binder, adding: ‘The IT team helped to put the infrastructure in place and the SAP Process department assisted with the design and program-ming of the ITS masks. This made it possible to in-troduce the solution within a short space of time.’ The solution was also very well received by users, which was crucial for the project’s success.

ITSmobile at binderSince July 2018, all picking jobs at the binder dis-patch warehouse have been completed using the handheld computers and a specially developed mobile ‘picking dialogue’. Right at the start of the process, the tugger train stores finished goods from the Production department at the warehouse using the mobile computers. The ‘picking dialogue’ sub-sequently guides pickers to the correct location and logs the products’ removal in the warehouse management program in the background, check-ing that each withdrawal has the correct material number. By using the 2D barcode, the number of items picked with each scan is counted too. This virtually eliminates the possibility of miscounting when whole packaging units are picked. ITSmobile speeds up all warehouse processes and is simple and intuitive for employees to use thanks to its de-sign. It also has a positive effect on warehousing. For instance, the introduction of handheld comput-ers in the dispatch warehouse has made it possible to successfully replace space-intensive rigid ware-housing with the more flexible ‘chaotic warehous-ing’ approach. It is already possible to pick orders much faster with fewer mistakes. The SAP Process department’s ongoing devel-opment work is making it possible for the handheld computers to be rolled out in more and more logis-tics areas. There are plans to start using the devices for incoming goods and production supply as well as the dispatch warehouse and tugger train before the year is out. The IT team is also working hard on a means of connecting a mobile Wi-Fi printer so that labels can be printed using ITSmobile too. Wi-Fi availability is to be expanded to additional areas, such as Production, so that the advantages of the handheld computers can be utilised there as well.

There is more to cables than meets the eye. Producers can cur-rently choose from more than 600 differ-

ent kinds of cables – a huge vari-ety comprising different colours, numbers of contacts, alloys, cross sections, shielding options and chemical resistance prop-erties. This diversity is essential to cater for customers’ specific requirements and needs. Three success factors play a critical role in the manufacturing pro-cess: cutting, printing and spe-cialist staff.

CuttingThe Production department uses a total of twelve cable cutting systems consisting of several synchronised machines. Their main task is to cut cable to the right length and strip the ends. As each type of cable has specific properties, a separate data set is needed for each one. The cutting parameters, contact pressures, transport speeds and length cor-rection factors vary from cable to cable, so these parameters must be defined in such a way that a job can be initiated without the need for set-up work to be com-

binder’s core competency lies in the manufacturing of circular connectors for automation technology.

The cables attached to them often go unmentioned, but there is a special production facility for

pleted first. Especially when large quantities are being produced, it is essential that the machines ensure high levels of process re-liability and reproducibility. The machines work with a complex length measurement system which runs a triple comparison to monitor the cable as it travels through the cutting system. This enables adherence to the cable length tolerances, some of which are very strict. Deviations are recognised by means of a perma-nent variance comparison and are then autonomously correct-ed by the cutting machine.

PrintingHigh-performance inkjet printers are used to print on the cable, which travels past them at speeds of up to 3 m/s. With this continu-ous inkjet system, minuscule drop-lets of ink are applied to the cable with the help of an electromagnet-ic field. The machines used have a voltage of up to 5,500 V. There is no end to the possi-bilities when it comes to printing too. Customers can choose how their cables should be printed. The text to be printed and the desired positions are stored in a central database and sent to the printer when the job is initiated. The cutting machine’s length measurement system ensures that the printing instruction is issued at the right time and the text is placed in exactly the right place on the cable, down to the last millimetre. Simple logos can

also be printed. We aim to of-fer our customers an individual logo which can be positioned wherever they like on the ca-ble. The trickiest part is not the printing itself: it is ensuring the print remains where it is sup-posed to be. A large number of factors affect print adhesion: the roughness of the cable jacket, the chemical composition of the jacket material, the surface ten-sion and tiny particles of dirt. As there are so many different cable types, printing them is a science in its own right.

Specialist staffOf course, specialist staff are also needed to master the many challenges. There is a five-strong technical service team for the cable cutting systems alone. The team’s responsibilities include servicing and maintaining the machines and assisting the staff who operate them. This has the major advantage of meaning that we are not reliant on exter-nal service providers. Outages and errors can therefore be rec-ognised and rectified quickly, allowing production to continue.

To make this process even more efficient, a new machining centre was acquired by the Toolmaking department in Novem-ber 2017 – a Fehlmann Versa 825 with a fully automatic pallet changer. This

state-of-the-art machine is capable of mastering demanding technical challenges, such as simulta-neous five-axis milling.

Minimal set-up timesToolmaking took on the challenge of configuring the Versa 825 in such a way as to minimise set-up times. To do this, the team designed and made their own gripping devices to allow the workpieces to be

clamped optimally using a mechanical self-cen-tring vice. A device for holding standard sheets was made in-house, allowing almost all toolmaking re-quirements to be met. The biggest advantage of the rocker and the rotary table is that they enable five-sided machining while the material is clamped in a single position.

The right tool for every job The Versa 825 has a tool magazine with 80 spaces. Tools can be changed in a matter of seconds. Fur-thermore, tools can be calibrated and checked for fractures directly in the machine’s working area us-ing a laser measuring system.

High pressure The machine is also fitted with a high-performance coolant system which can output a pressure of up to 80 bar straight onto the cutting edge of the tool via special channels. This is important for high-per-formance machining because it ensures good cool-ing and chip clearance.

Next step towards automationIn addition, the machining centre has a fully auto-matic pallet changer which automatically swaps the workpiece pallets in the machine’s working area. Each pallet measures 400 × 400 mm and has a high-precision, zero-point clamping system with a repetition accuracy of less than 0.005 mm which guarantees that pallets are changed quickly and positioned correctly. A rack allows pallets to be set up and clamped externally while machining is under way. Preparing several workpieces makes it possible to boost the machine’s capacity if the working day needs to extend beyond eight – or even 16 – hours.

Digitised and fully connected There are plans to connect the machine to a central tool database in the future. This would make it pos-sible to access all tool parameters in the machines directly from a CAD/CAM programming worksta-tion. Complete programs could then be created and simulated ahead of time. These are fundamen-tal prerequisites for unattended production.

The binder test facility was launched in mid-2018 to test injection moulding tools and pro-duce samples for series approval. What is the idea behind it and were the first six months a success? T E C H N O LO G Y

Mr Müller, let’s start with a simple question: what does binder need injection moulding tools for? Injection moulding tools are needed to make female and male inserts, sleeves and other plastic components.

And what role does the binder test facility play in connection with these tools? It serves as a link between Toolmak-ing and Production. New tools are test-ed here for the first time to see whether they work perfectly. In addition to this, we make plastic parts for quality control, measurement, and electrical and me-chanical function testing.

Compared with the processes used in the past, how does the test facility represent an improvement? It is no longer necessary to interrupt regular production, which makes it eas-ier to plan mould validation and gives us a more flexible time frame. However, the mould validation process can be interrupted at short notice to make minor optimisations to the tool.

To help us picture the facility, what equipment do you and your co-workers have at your disposal? We have three different-sized injection mould-ing machines from various manufacturers. They can also be modified to handle tools of different

sizes. On top of this, we have additional machines to dry the material.

What challenges do you face? We have to find the best combination of nu-merous different settings to manufacture flawless parts in the fastest possible sequence using a sta-ble process. The basic settings can be calculated or

found in reference tables. However, the set-up team’s experience is crucial when it comes to finding the perfect settings.

Can you describe the workflow at the test facility? After the designer submits a test request, the new tool is clamped in the injection moulding machine so that we can test whether the tool’s movement, sliders for the demoulding of undercuts and the ejector system work perfectly. Then, we work out the optimum para- meters for flawless, cost-effective pro-duction.

What happens next? The finished parts are inspected visually, docu-mented in a sample report and passed on to other departments for assessment. Once both the Quali-ty and Testing department and the relevant design-er have issued their final approval, the tool can be used by Plastics Production for manufacturing.

Why does working at the binder test facility hold a special appeal? There is very little routine and every day brings new tasks and challenges with it. The affiliated company binder Austria con-sists of three main core divisions: the sale of commercial products; toolmaking and mould construction; and the production of plastic parts. In the field of manufactur-

ing, the machine park has now been modernised in line with the latest technical standards.

Preventive instead of cost-intensiveThe Röders milling machine used previously was purchased in 2000. To be able to meet future de-mand, we have invested in a five-axis milling centre of the same brand with a 94-station tool changer as well as a triple pallet changer. This machine is de-signed for electrode manufacturing and hard mill-ing. In addition, steel, copper and graphite can be machined. To be able to precisely manufacture in the thousandth-of a-millimetre range, we have also invested in a shrink-fit unit as well as a balancing system for the milling machine. ‘With this invest-

ment in our department, we can now utilise the machines even more systematically and increase our productivity,’ says Head of Toolmaking Thomas Leber with pride.

Capacity expansionDue to the 51 per cent increase in annual turnover in the production of plastic parts, the operations manager Peter Moser already realised that the ma-chine capacity needed to be increased in the first half of 2018. During the third quarter of 2018, two Engel machines were transferred from binder cable assemblies in Hungary in order to safeguard the project business of our strategically important cus-tomers. To increase our own capacity and replace old machines, another five Engel injection-mould-ing machines were purchased and taken into ser-vice at the end of last year.

to further develop product quality so that the cus-tomer requirements are not only fulfilled but in the best-case scenario even exceeded. Since last Oc-tober, Thomas Werk has been responsible for the Sales Region East/South. This comprises the Aus-trian states of Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland, Styria and Carinthia. Due to the rapid sales growth in recent years, it was necessary to expand this area in order to continue guaranteeing high-quality on-the-spot customer support in the future. Harald Landl also joined the company in October and is supporting the Logistics department with great dedication. Stefan Baumgartner has been work-ing for binder Austria since 2016 in the Toolmaking department. In September 2018, he completed the Austrian training programme to become an instruc-tor and has since been mentoring our apprentice Dominik Lang. In September 2019, we intend to take on another apprentice. binder Austria would like to thank Stefan Baumgartner today for his dedication to training the employees of tomorrow.

As a specialist in M12 connectors, binder has one of the broadest and deepest product ranges on the market. Its catalogue includes various codings and types of male cable connectors and panel mount connectors. In the past, these connectors were primarily used for sensor technology, but these days, the products can also be found in countless other application areas, such as data transmission. The advantage of these connectors is that they are quick and easy to install, even for non-experts.

Review of 2018The trade fairs attended by binder Netherlands last year were highly satisfactory. Advanced Engineer-ing in Ghent gave the company a chance to spend two days talking to existing and potential clients from Belgium. Meanwhile, the WoTS fair in Utrecht attracted a large number of visitors with concrete enquiries. Our attendance at this trade show has already resulted in a number of orders. The LED Event in Den Bosch primarily attracts technical specialists and developers who are keen to see the latest innovations in the sector. binder can offer this market a number of solutions for projects re-quiring waterproof connections. In summary, bind-er Netherlands took another step forward last year – especially in markets such as medical technology, agricultural engineering and the LED sector.

Outlook for 2019binder Netherlands expects further sales growth in 2019. This will be prompted both by existing cus-tomers purchasing higher quantities and choosing additional series in future and by new clients using binder connectors for the first time. Sales and con-tacts with distributors and partners in the Neth-erlands and Belgium are also rising year by year. There is growing demand for connector technology solutions, which can be used in a range of applica-tions, including motion sensors, LED lights for gar-den furniture, static monitoring instruments and automatic milking systems. Demand for UL-certi-fied products is rising markedly. These products are approved for appliances and applications in the USA. binder has a very wide product range in this field too. binder Netherlands is extremely well placed to capitalise on the many new chances and opportunities which will arise this year and to keep impressing customers.

Since November 2018, a wave of pro-tests and social unrest has hit the French economy. So far, however, bind-er France’s business activities have remained largely unaffected, and will

hopefully continue to be spared any negative ef-fects. Despite a few forecasts of a downturn in the economy for 2019, our broad customer base safe-guards the stability of our business. In addition, key markets, including medicine, robotics and au-tomation, have been enjoying constant growth for some years now. We also have our sights on other fast-growing market segments, such as lighting and the Internet of Things.

New developmentsA few strategic decisions are pending – affecting both personnel and infrastructure. A sales officer is to be appointed for the Rhône-Alpes region, and there are plans for a sales engineer to strengthen the team in Paris. Since it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep warehousing and administration under one roof, binder France is assessing the pos-sibility of moving to new premises – adaptations will be needed if the business is to expand in the future. The outdated IT system is also about to be modernised. Customer service has always been a central focus at binder France, ensuring customers enjoy excellent quality. High levels of product qual-

In order to satisfy the ever-increasing requirements of customers and the Chinese market and to meet local demand, a decision was taken at the binder Group’s sales and management

meeting in 2018 to set up a production line in China for male and female shield-ed cable connectors. The production line has now been successfully installed and the first samples arrived in the binder lab at our Neckarsulm headquarters in

February 2019. In addition, the weekly air shipment to China includes a consid-erable quantity of connectors ‘made in Neckarsulm’, ensuring that all customer orders are dealt with efficiently and that products can be shipped to the furthest corners of China every day. With binder China now stocking over 2,000 products and more than 250,000 individual parts, this is now easy to achieve.
