The Standards for Mathematical Practices (SMP) in Action
Bill BarnesAugust 28, 2012HCPSS Professional Development Day
Standards for Mathematical Practices1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving
them.2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.3. Construct viable arguments and critique the
reasoning of others.4. Model with mathematics.5. Use appropriate tools strategically.6. Attend to precision.7. Look for and make use of structure.8. Look for and express regularity in repeated
reasoning.CCSSO (2010)

Focus on Critical Thinking and Mathematical ProcessesEvolved from NCTM’s process
standards of problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, representation, and connections
Strands of mathematical proficiency specified in the National Research Council’s report Adding It Up
Classroom ExpectationsThe SMP represent varieties of
expertise that mathematics educators at all levels should seek to develop in their students
Each and every mathematics lesson should include opportunities for students to develop (and demonstrate proficiency) of at least one of the practices.
Connections to PARCC AssessmentPractice Forward Task
A task that is intentionally designed to elicit one or more Standards for Mathematical Practice in connection to specified content standards.

In Small Groups…(25 minutes)“Unpack” on cluster of SMP by reviewing
1) anticipated student proficiencies and 2) questions to guide planning
Think about and discuss the impact on your professional practice. ◦What will you have to do differently to
ensure that students are developing these practices?
◦What evidence will you collect to support this development?
Connection to the Teaching Standards
In Small Groups…(25 minutes)Select from among a set of tasks and…
Work collaborative to complete the task
Think about and discuss the SMP that you exhibited while solving the problem
Discuss implications for instructional planning and classroom instruction
Expectations for TransitionDeepen your understanding of
the SMP and your role in developing these behaviors
Engage in collaborative planning cycles with a specific focus on the development of targeted SMP
