RICE

Thomas Joules Rice was born in Virginia between 1770 and 1775. 1 Purportedly Thomas was first married to Margaret Thong or Thom and the couple had six children. 2 Margaret died in Wayne County, Kentucky, before 20 January 1825, by which time Thomas Rice had married Susan Baker. 3

Susan (Baker) Rice was born in Kentucky about 1805,4 but there is no agreement regarding the names of her parents. One William Baker posted her marriage bond, but he could have been some other relative than Susan's father. 5

In 1831 Thomas and Susan (Baker) Rice and their family moved to Randolph County, Missouri. 6 From their 1825 marriage until the death of Thomas in 1846 their union produced nine children. 7 In 1860 Susan and their youngest child, Thomas Jr, aged 16, were living in Linn County with William McCollum who in 1859 had married the Rice's daughter Betty. 8 William had previously been married to the Rice's daughter Mary "Polly,'' who was by then deceased. 9

By 1880 Susan Rice was making her home in Chariton County with her son Giles. 10 The date of Susan (Baker) Rice' s death is not known .

Thomas and Susan (Baker) Rice's fifth child, Nancy Emaline/Emerine, was born 4 May 1833 in Randolph County. 11 About 1850 Nancy married Stephen Mccollum, son of David and Elizabeth (Sandlin) McCollum. 12 Stephen and Nancy lived their entire lives in Chariton County, Missouri, where Stephen farmed and where they raised a family of eleven children, all but one of whom lived to adulthood.13

Nancy (Rice) McCollum died 28 July 1896 and is buried in Park Cemetery, Cockrell Township. 14 A photograph of her tombstone appears later in this compilation.

NOTES

l. Technically the children of Thomas and Susan (Baker) Rice are not proven as this listing was extracted from the 1850 Randolph County, Missouri Census (Reference 7 above). This compiler believes the list to be accurate, although possibly not complete. Also it may be that more definitive proof will never be forthcoming.

NOTES

l. I have reservations that the surname ''Thong" for the wife of Thomas J. Rice is correct Thong is a Dutch surname found primarily in New York State. No families by that name were found in early Virginia or Kentucky. In the 1880 Randolph County census (References 20 and 21 above) both William H. Rice and M H. Rice indicate both their parents were born in Virginia There are both Rice and Thom families found living in early Culppeper County, VA

2. Larry Sumpter's Database of Deaths in Randolph County, Missouri (Reference 10 above) indicates that Jane Rice, wife of William Sumpter, was the daughter of Thomas Rice of this family group, and gives her birth date as 1808. 1808 agrees with Jane's birth date shown in the 1870 U.S. Census for Randolph County. Something is amiss here as both the 1810 and 1820 Wayne County, KY, U.S. Censuses for Thomas Rice show no female in the appropriate age category to have been born in 1808.

3. M H. Rice has been included with this Rice family because he is shown living in such close proximity to A R Rice and William H. Rice in the 1850 and 1870 Randolph County, MO, censuses. Coincidentally Andrew R, William H. and James J. Rice also usually went by their initials. There are many additional Rice men found in Randolph, Chariton and Linn Counties, Missouri, in the same time frame as is reflected in these records. They originate from various states, but there is every likelihood that at least some of those born in Kentucky are directly or collaterally associated with this Rice family.
