    o here it is.

    The 1995 - 1996 academic year chronicled.

This review will be scoured and leafed throughj

over the next few days with great attention toidetail. It might then be relegated to a side table

somewhere at home to be produced when grand-parents and others visit. And it will gradually findits way into storage or onto an appropriate shelf.

To be neglected for a time.

    But never to be forgotten.

"You're right! That was the year when..." and

Memories 1996 will be the principal documentrecording this one year in the lives of the 155

students who are The Sterling Hall School. Andperhaps also in the lives of those whose pro-

fession or very existence touched them: their

    teachers; those who work in the various officesand corridors of our school; Ernesto and Maria;

the Governors of the school; and most important-

ly, the chief supporters, their parents who workso hard to make all this happen.

The words and pictures contained in this docu-

ment are touchstones and the inspiration for the

recounting of other stories which have not or

    should not be published.

And these memories are the stuff of schools - soprecious as legends and traditions are created

and become fixtures without which schools are

    so easily forgotten.

So look with care, read, enjoy, smile, laugh. And

remember the moments of joy and exhilaration

as well as the moments of effort, of doubt and

    of questioning.

And move on to the next year. Well done all of

    you and good luck!

The Airplane - Tom McLaughlin, Grade 8

I am used in times of war and times of peaceI can be used as an eagle in the sky

I can lift things of great destruction, things that can level cities in seconds

I can lift men to fight for their nation in times of warI can lift men to keep peace in nations at warI can take people at speeds that were dreamed impossible 60 years ago

I can take people in a matter of hours across oceans that would take weeks

    to do 80 years ago

I was started off by two brothers who were inspired by a toy from ChinaI can die and fall out of the sky

I am the blinking lights in the night skyI have been made not to be caught in the night skyI will have made an everlasting mark on this green planet

  • SHS HITS THE SLOPES!

Over 170 of our students, parents, teachers and friends spent

the day on the slopes at Snow Valley near Barrie. Expertskier and novice alike participated in this day of commu-nity spirit. Some of the more adventurous at heart tackledthe hills on snow boards with varying degrees of success.

Barring the odd bruise, Ski Day was a tremendous successand lots of fun!

  • THE WIZARD OF OZ

  • iET THE GAMES BEGIN!

On a drearily wet day, the SHS community participated in the 1996 SHS Olympics. Competition occurred in aseries of athletic events which, given the weather conditions, challenged the Faculty as much as the Students! This Olympics was special in that there was a 10 minute sponsored run/walk/crawl, organized by Grade 7 students

Andrew Cronin and Tim McLaughlin to help the Canadian effort at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. They had

been inspired by the efforts of teacher Fraser Bertram to qualify for inclusion in the Canadian team. The Goal

was $6,500.00 and SHS raised $8,000.00 - the highest amount raised by a school for the Olympic movement!
