Did you know that “January Blues” is a genuine medical condition? It’s called SAD, which stands for Seasonal Affective Disorder. If I have to paraphrase the events of 2020 in one straightforward sentence, it would go like this: COVID ruined everything but we at least learned how to properly wash our hands.

The year 2020 was difficult for everyone. It caught us all by surprise. Everyone was unprepared and unorganized and the chaos that it created changed the world forever. I would have never guessed before the 2020 COVID crisis that people in the United States would be fighting in stores over the last roll of toilet paper.

I’m not a psychic and I don’t need to visit one either to know that 2021 will be an interesting year as well. The year 2020 has left us with far too many unresolved problems for 2021 to be magically better overnight. It will take some time, it will take some doing and there will almost certainly be unforeseen setbacks that we will have to deal with and solve. And while I may not have any say in the uncertainty and the plans that the world or Mother Nature has for us, I did remind myself that I have full power and say over my own thoughts and over my own actions.

I can start 2021 in a state of misery and despair, obsessing over all of the world’s problems,

living in the past and wishing for a reality that is no longer possible. Conversely, I can begin 2021 by being grateful that, in the middle of a world pandemic, surrounded by chaos, uncertainty and death, I am still alive and able to enjoy so many of the little things that most of the time I just take for granted. This was actually my New Year’s resolution: to stop, take a breath and just enjoy the little things. I honestly can’t remember the last time I woke up at 5:00 a.m. to watch a beautiful sunrise or the last time I sat down on a park bench (drenched in mosquito spray) to just enjoy the colors of a gorgeous Florida sunset.

I know it’s hard to believe, but we can enjoy life and be safe at the same time as well. I am determined to do both and I hope to see everyone determined and ready to fight and ready to once again enjoy life to its full available potential. I hope to see everyone working together so, despite COVID, government regulations and possible unforeseen weather events, we can make 2021 an amazing year, a year of happiness and joy. Happy 2021 everyone! We can do this!

It’s fun to share a good laugh, but did you know it can actually improve your health? It’s true: laughter is strong medicine. It draws people together in ways that trigger healthy physical and emotional changes in the body. Laughter strengthens your immune system, boosts mood, diminishes pain and protects you from the damaging effects of stress. Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. Humor lightens your burdens, inspires hope, connects you to others, and keeps you grounded, focused and alert. It also helps you release anger and forgive sooner.

With so much power to heal and renew, the ability to laugh easily and frequently is a tremendous resource for surmounting problems, enhancing your relationships, and supporting both physical and emotional health. Best of all, this priceless medicine is fun, free, and easy to use.

As children, we used to laugh hundreds of times a day, but as adults, life tends to be more serious and laughter more infrequent. But by seeking out more opportunities for humor and laughter, you can improve your emotional health, strengthen your relationships, find greater happiness—and even add years to your life.

If you still don’t believe that laughter is good for your health, carry on reading... • Laughter relaxes the whole body. A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after. • Laughter boosts the immune system. Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease. • Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain. • Laughter protects the heart. Laughter improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems. • Laughter burns calories. Okay, so it’s no replacement for going to the gym, but one study found that laughing for 10 to 15 minutes a day can burn approximately 40 calories—which could be enough to lose three or four pounds over the course of a year. • Laughter lightens anger’s heavy load. Nothing diffuses anger and conflict faster than a shared laugh. Looking at the funny side can put problems into perspective and enable you to move on from confrontations without holding on to bitterness or resentment. • Laughter may even help you to live longer. A study in Norway found that people with a strong sense of humor outlived those who don’t laugh as much. The difference was particularly notable for those battling cancer.

Take our advice, don’t go a day without laughing. Think of it like exercise or breakfast and make a conscious effort to find something each day that makes you laugh. Set aside 10 to 15 minutes to do something that amuses you. The more you get used to laughing each day, the less effort you’ll have to make.

Join us as we explore the rich multicultural and multinational lifestyles found here at Premier Residences! As we begin the new year, Five Star’s Signature Program will celebrate the diversity, ancestry, proud traditions and uniqueness of our residents! This month, we will listen to the life stories, find out where they were born and how they came to America. We’ll learn about the history of these mother countries—exploring the rich traditions, holidays and spiritual trends prior to emigrating. We’ll explore the motivation to migrate, the lessons learned during the journey and a bit about the old country traditions. As part of our signature theme this month we present a very special DVD, “We Are the World: Behind the Scenes,” on Wednesday, the 20th, at 6:15 p.m. In 30 years, “USA for Africa” has raised more than $100,000,000 to help alleviate poverty in Africa and in the United States. In 1985, the music industry and the world came together in an unprecedented outpouring of generosity in response to the tragic famine wreaking havoc in Africa at the time. The biggest names in music checked their egos at the door to create what was, and still is, a worldwide phenomenon. The recording of the original “We Are The World” sold more than seven million records worldwide. The worldwide sale of that record generated more than $60 million which has been used to assist Africans affected by the famine and other critical issues. The song became, and remains, the people’s anthem and continues to be revered and loved globally See 45 of the biggest names in music combine to record a song to help alleviate

the suffering of starving millions.

The entire staff of Premier Residences would like to give a huge thanks to our residents for their generosity and for making this holiday season more joyful. We would also like to give a big thanks to the hard-working Resident Board members for making this possible. Special gratitude goes out to our treasurer Gloria Eberle and Anne Ketcham, along with Chairman of the

Resident Board, Jack Moss. They have worked tirelessly for three months to help give our employees a much-appreciated holiday check. We wish you could see the big smile under Rudy’s mask (pictured) after receiving his check from Anne and Jack! In fact, the smiles from all the employees could have lit the Christmas tree without any electricity! Thank you again to every resident who was so generous!

Many of you have complimented us on the beautiful tree this year. We accept your compliments with joy, however, we must acknowledge the generosity of new resident Marie Kastenbaum. This was her tree for the past 15 years and she has been collected a bevy of beautiful ornaments for it during that time. We hope you got an up-close look at the amazing variety of her collection which ranges from trumpets to ice skating to sparkling stars that take your breath away. Thanks to Marie for her very special Christmas gift that so many residents have enjoyed.

SIGNATURE PROGRAM

We Are the World

It’s not very often in my 20-plus years as an Activities Director that I have written a personal note in the newsletter but right now I can’t help myself. I am overwhelmed by the wonderful welcome you have given me. After being here for just over a month, I really feel as though I have found my new family and I look forward to all our family gatherings for years to come. The incredible residents, the management and staff have also welcomed me with open arms and have gone out of their way to help me. I am so appreciative. Thank you just isn’t enough. I can’t finish without thanking one particular resident who should be crowned the Volunteer of the Year. He volunteers to help with activities so much that some of you think he is really my assistant. However, he is a resident just like you, who happens to have the biggest heart and has been a lifesaver to me these last weeks. So thank you Mr. Kuchs, known fondly to us all as Jim! It is truly wonderful to bring in the New Year with you and I extend my warmest wishes for a very happy and especially healthy 2021.

Heartfelt Thanks

We all know that change is hard. Change is hard because your brain is wired to do the same thing over and over. We also know how challenging it can be to go through change, but the positive consequence is really awesome. There have been many changes last year because of Covid, and there will be more changes ahead. It’s interesting to read that top psychologists think that change is good for you. Here are the top five... • You are pushed out of your comfort zone. Life in the comfort zone is easy. You simply follow a routine and you can predict the consequences. Outside of the comfort zone, your assumptions are challenged. Your opinions, mindset and belief system are tested. Getting out and doing something new and different is a fostered approach to life. • You get to experience more. Change is good because you have the opportunity to embrace new experiences. New perspectives are waiting for you at the doorstep. • You get to find out who you really are. When you are going through a transition, your mind expands in way that it hadn’t in the past. You find out about what you can handle and what you can’t. Learning about yourself, including what you cannot handle, helps you to figure out a better path to take in life. • Makes you more flexible and adaptable. Without a doubt, change makes your more flexible and adaptable. You are armed with more confidence every time you walk into the next uncomfortable situation. You begin to thrive in new situations because you have proven to yourself that you can not only handle change, but FLOURISH. • You have more fun. When you are open to change, you are open to saying YES to more. You are open to more experiences and opportunities. You have the occasion to meet more people, too. So let’s make up our minds to embrace the changes ahead and prove that change really is good for you!

Everyone is encouraged to come and party! My Favorite Broadway Tuesday, January 19th • 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, January 27th • 6:15 p.m. Especially for show lovers who haven’t had the chance to see a Broadway show for a while, we present two magnificent DVD’s to reminisce about the good times of the Broadway Theater. First, on Tuesday, the 19th, “My Favorite Broadway Leading Ladies” is a concert recorded at Carnegie Hall in 1998 featuring showstoppers performed by the greatest divas of the American theatre. The American Theatre Orchestra accompanied Liza Minnelli, Audra McDonald, Linda Eder, Nell Carter, Andrea McArdle, Jennifer Holliday, Lea Delaria and a host of other Broadway legends in performing selections from Chicago, A Chorus Line, Showboat, Guys and Dolls, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Dreamgirls, Company, Gypsy and others. Julie Andrews hosts the second installment, “My Favorite Broadway: The Love Songs,” on Wednesday, the 27th. The program is a magical concert extravaganza featuring Broadway stars such as Robert Goulet, Chita Rivera, Nathan Lane and Michael Crawford performing some of the greatest love songs from Broadway shows.
