Sitting underneath the impressive glass, domed roof, are the top high street stores such as Topshop, Topman, River Island, Warehouse, Mango, Burton, Next, Urban Outfitters, Hollister and Superdry. Many of these offer student discounts, making it just that little bit easier to convince yourself you can afford your new purchases!

As well as the main high street stores, there are some interesting additions. The Victoria’s Secret store is new and exclusive in Leeds and there are a great range of designer stores such as Fossil and independent fashion stores such as The Hip Store.

There are some fantastic places offering brilliant lunch deals like Giraffe, Carluccio’s, The Handmade Burger Co, Wagamamas and Yo! Sushi and if you need to rest your tired feet, or fancy a quick bite of lunch in between lectures these places are perfect!

Although the shops close at 8pm, the Trinity Leeds experience does not stop there. Some of the best highlights in the centre are the choice of cocktail bars, bars and restaurants. As Trinity Leeds is situated right in the centre of Leeds, it creates a great place to start your night out for a few cocktails in The Alchemist or The Botanist, with the

best clubs and bars in close proximity on Call Lane only a few minutes walk away.

As an alternative to a night out in the clubs, the Leeds Everyman cinema, with a 500 seat capacity and 3 screens is also an amazing attraction at Trinity Leeds. The cinema is more luxurious than other chains and boasts comfy sofa seating, individual foot rests and tables.

Trinity Leeds offers sophistication in shopping, entertainment and dining and is the place to be for students in Leeds.

A LEEDS fashion student has scooped the top prize in a shirt design competition which is ran by the prestigious retailer Hawes & Curtis.

Sophie Gray, 24, a graduate of Leeds Art College entered the annual design competition in her final year in conjunction with the shirtmakers who are based in the Victoria Quarter. The talented student beat off more than 30 entrants to the competition and can now see her winning design available in the Leeds Hawes & Curtis store and in their Jermyn Street flagship store. Sophie said: ‘As part of a module in our course we are encouraged to enter live competitions. ‘My inspiration came from corporate and courtroom styles, I looked at the clothing that barristers wore, such as classic formal shirts and pussy bow designs and put my own feminine twist on it.’

Sophie, who now works in fashion recruitment, adds: ‘I was really excited to win and it’s such an honour to know that something I designed is now available for people to buy.’

David Wilson, Leeds Hawes & Curtis Store Manager, comments: ‘The standard of the competition entries was

incredibly high and it was a tough final decision. We are thrilled with the shirt that Sophie designed; it mirrors the style and sophistication that is associated with Hawes & Curtis.’ Hawes & Curtis launched the annual competition in 2011 and have continuously had an overwhelming number of students compete for the design accolade. Hawes & Curtis was established in 1913 by Ralph Hawes and Freddie Curtis, with the intention of creating high quality, exclusive clothing for gentlemen. This year the company celebrated its 100 year anniversary and marked the milestone with an exclusive collection.

With it’s beautiful Victorian architecture, the Leeds Corn Exchange manages to be both old and new, bringing together the chic cosmopolitan concept of small boutiques along side the grand Victorian setting and traditional crafts.

Student life is often very busy, cramming in work to meet deadlines. With a small taste of the South in the North, reminiscent of Covent Garden in many ways with it’s sweeping iron staircases and bustling shops, the Leeds Corn Exchange takes you away from all of the student stresses of life and transports you into a student shopping paradise.

All of the shops in the Corn Exchange have something to offer to student. Starting with a coffee in one of the two coffee shops, Primo’s and Vanilla One, you can begin your shopping experience taking in the great atmosphere, before deciding which shops and boutiques to visit.

The great choice of small boutique shops are perfect for picking up bargains, pretty gifts for birthday presents or joke and ‘Secret Santa’ presents.

Yellow Sunrise, a bright

gems and finding yourself that perfect vintage skirt or jacket!

A host of specialist stores, from guitars at Northern Acoustics to retro cameras at West Yorkshire Cameras, also offer a refreshing change to the ubiquitous chain stores of the high street. The Corn Exchange is also great for getting treating yourself to a new haircut. There are two great hairdressers, Christopher Mark hairdressers offering a 25% student discount and ‘Imale’ offering a stylish student shampoo and cut for just £16.50.

So for a shopping experience which is unlike any other in Leeds, head down to the Leeds Corn Exchange.

and colourful shop brings a piece of the orient and ethnic culture into the Corn Exchange with a bright shop display of gifts, clothes, fabrics and home accessories.

The Juju Shop houses an impressive collection of reasonably priced prints which are a refreshing breath of air from the carbon copies of prints that are sold at every Fresher’s fair. There are some great original ideas, with ideal student price tags to match.

Like in many other student cities, the vintage clothing sceneis particularly big in Leeds and there are several vintage boutiques in the Corn Exchange which are perfect for browsing through some hidden

ALGERNONFIRTHJess from Student Dweller steps into the world of Student Accommodation, and was impressed at what Algernon Firth had to offer the Students of Leeds...

Algernon Firth is the latest exciting development by award winning Leeds’ based property development and investment company, Rushbond Plc. With over 25 years of experience going into creating the next generation of student accommodation, it marks yet another property offering the best in contemporary living.

A Grade II listed building, Algernon Firth was originally built for the University of Leeds in 1933 and is named after Sir Algernon Firth who was a Yorkshire Industrialist. Featuring superb brickwork and art deco architecture throughout, it is being carefully transformed into modern student accommodation while still maintaining the character of this historic city centre building.

I received my hard hat, hi-vis jacket and of course completed my look with Timberland Boots to have a tour round the property. The On-site manager, Richard, showed me around the standard suites to start off with.

The sleek furnishings of the kitchen were ultra modern which included bright coloured appliances, granite style work-tops and stainless steel features. Perfect for having mates over for a cuppa and catching up with flat mates with plenty of home furnishings, including contemporary sofas!

Onto to the bedrooms, they were spacious with a neat en-suite complete with power shower, double beds complete with plenty of storage and wardrobe space, it is the perfect solution to student living. Fast Wifi connection is another added extra.

We then moved on to viewing the dearer studio flats located on the top floor of the premises. A fantastic, two tier living space where you can see your bedroom from sitting in your living area and kitchen on a balcony style build.

The furnishings of the standard en-suites are practically the same for the Studio Flats,

with cream, light walls and a modern interior furnishing. Each room on this top floor is unique due to the original architecture of the building, some contain plenty of windows and others have various spotlights on the ceiling.

This is one of the safest student Accommodations in the city with a 24 hour concierge, 24 hour Security and CCTV to give you peace of mind day and night.

Location is another fantastic pointer, a stones throw away from all amenities such as the universities and Trinity shopping mall, plus all the shops, bars and clubs in the heart of Leeds City Centre.

A gym is also included in the residence, so you can work hard and play hard at your accommodation without having to trek to your local gym miles away.

Everything you could think of having in one place in the city centre is here with Algernon Firth! On-site launderette, bike storage, on-site gym and all inclusive bills....

...What more you could you want!?

If you’ve just arrived in the city that you

are going to be living in for the next

three years or so, you need to know a

few things to keep yourself safe whilst

you get used to your new surroundings.

For additional information on staying safe while you study, check out:www.knowledge-leeds.co.ukwww.immobilise.comwww.westyorkshire.police.uk

KEEP ITSAFEHow To Stay SAFE In The CITY

1.1.

University Student and Student Dweller’s Emma Stocks gives us her Top Tips on staying safe during your time studyingin Leeds city.

AlwAyS TrAvEl In A groUp.

This is particularly relevant if you are

female, as sadly lone females still

remain an easy target for attacks,

muggings and more.

If you have a journey to do that may mean you travelling in the dark, ensure that you do a practice run

during the daylight.

2.2.

3.3. If you have had more than a few on

a night out, make sure you always

stay in a brightly lit area, preferably

within visible distance of people. Do

not stray into dark streets or alleys,

or anywhere seemingly unpopulated.

4.4. Don’t wave your valuables around. This is just common sense. Even if you are from a village where you

can leave your front door unlocked, you know not to walk around with a roll of cash in your hand wearing your iPhone as a hat. Be sensible with your possessions basically,

because thieves will pounce on any opportunity you give them.

5.5. Before you go out for the first time, do some research at home and save

at least five different numbers of reputable taxi firms into your phone. That way, if you’re too drunk to walk home, can’t remember how to walk

home, or haven’t got enough battery to Google a number, you can always be sure that you can get to where

you need to be.

6.6.Try and be savvy enough to keep

at least £5 as back-up money.

Keep it somewhere safe, and yes

you can be imaginative with this.

That way, even if those five shots

for a fiver look really tempting, you

can always get home no matter

what the situation.

7.7. If a stranger speaks to you, or asks you a question on the street, always answer them quickly and move on, never engage them in

conversation and do not tell them any information about yourself. As charming as your “new best

friend” may seem, they might have an agenda which you are unaware of so always be cautious.

STUDENT TIPS FOR

SMARTER DRINKING• If you know you are going to be drinking alcohol

make sure you eatsomethingfirst to line your stomach.

• Drinkplentyofwaterandsoftdrinks throughout the night to keep hydrated and slow down your drinking. Perhaps you could have a soft drink after every alcoholic one?

• Don’tdrinkeveryday. If you’ve had a heavy session, give your liver a break and take a couple of days off the booze.

• Findanactivityorjoinasocietythatdoesn’trevolvearounddrinking. For example, joining a drama society could mean spending your evenings down the local theatre for a change.

• Decideonabudget before you go out to avoid being tempted to overspend on cheap drinks. Or only take cash and leave your bank card at home.

• Alwaysplanhowyou’llgethome from a night out and never walk home by yourself. Stick with your mates and split the cost of a taxi from a reputable firm.

• Watchoutfordrinkspiking. Keep an eye on your drink and never leave it unattended. Be careful if accepting drinks from strangers.

STUDENT REVIEWS

Underworld’ by Don DeLillo - ReviewWords: Max Bruges

BOOK

Between the Fresh-Prince-themed club nights, and the ‘Edgy Leeds’ penchant for crap sweatshirts and faded baseball caps, one could be forgiven for thinking we were going though a bit of a Nineties renaissance. It’s a situation made all the stranger when you remember that most of the current crop of Freshers only started at primary school in 1999; can you really be nostalgic for decade you spent mostly in high-chairs, nappies, and the womb?

Generational curmudgeonliness aside, defining ‘the Nineties’ has always been a bit of a problem. None of the Grease-immortalised glamour of the Fifties, nor the tie-dye colour-coding of the Seventies, nor the electronic-ridden hedonism of the Eighties. But in ‘Underworld’, DeLilo solves the conundrum: the Nineties was the decade about the decades that came before it. This, really, is the only book you’ll ever need to read about the Nineties.

There’s the usual foibles of millennial American lit-erature: namely the slightly tedious narrative focus on self-consciously suburban middle class families Having A Bit Of A Miserable Time, making pointed observations about the inanities of consumerism; but where a writer like Franzen uses a ploy like this as the totality of his novel, DeLillo does something much clever. Yes, his characters in the prosper-ous McMansions are a little tedious, but that’s sort of the point. The narrative floats, disconnected from period and place, giving us a ‘greatest hits’ retrospective of the more colourful, easily defined decades of the 20th Century - from Frank Sinatra watching a baseball game with J. Edgar Hoover, to an Eighties artists’ colony shimmering in the New Mexico desert - before returning to the bored, introspective domesticity of the contemporary mid-Nineties. We begin to see the decade for what it is: a society suddenly stripped of the simple moral polarity that had underwritten American life since the division of Berlin, constantly looking backwards with fond nostalgia at the times when to be American was to represent the hero in the global story, dumbstruck by the directionless mil-lennium ahead.

Sheerly beautiful prose is par for the course with DeLillo, and ‘Underworld’ is no exception. Plucking out fantastic images and deeply affecting scenes, playing the personal against the geopolitical, he accomplishes the near-impossible feat of illustrating half a century in the American continent.

‘Stoner’ by John Williams - ReviewWords: Lily Dessau

With Stoner, John Williams writes to arrest his audience, almost to shock them into a sense of joie de vivre. No matter how bleak (and it is really, very bleak) a reader may find it, Stoner does wonders in reflecting a life worth lived, through what we find to be quite a heartbreaking and troubling example. At times you want to shake William Stoner, tell him to grow a pair and stand up to- or at the very least run away from- his frighteningly depressive wife, Edith. At others, you believe he is gathering momentum in his workplace (the English department at a fictional adaptation of Williams’ own alma mater the University of Missouri) and that he may come out on top. But alas, he shirks off all possibility of promotion, and wants to remain as professor and little more.

We find glimmers of hope in some of William Stoner’s relationships, all of which are slow burning. His friendship with Gordon Finch, who rockets past him in the chain of command at the university, but still keeps him under his wing, is a pure example of brotherhood. The blossoming companionship with his daughter, although somewhat destroyed by Edith, is touching and shows us into Stoner’s truly warm heart.

William Stoner’s modest life, from his entering the university, and through the entirety of his career, is told by a very gentle narrator. Williams is an elegant writer, whose description reads out almost as a whisper, urging you to seek the beauty of the scene, instead of forcing it upon you.

Stoner seeks to reveal, subtly but certainly, this beauty of life in even its most trying of cases. At times Stoner is a very difficult character to persevere with, there being little sign of things getting better for him. But I assure you, stay with him until the end, and he will stay with you much longer.

Thanks Max & Lily!

STUDENT TO DRINKING

From the off, during a booze-filled Freshers, to January re-freshers and the frequent nights out inbetween, alcohol is undoubtedly a huge part of student life! However, there comes a time to all of us on the odd occasion where waking up the next day with a horrific headache and a killer hangover is just not worth it. Plus it does us good to give our livers a rest now and again!

Face masks are easily available from Boots or you can go all out and make your own. Paint each other’s nails and treat yourself to an all over body scrub in the bath. To add a touch of glamour you could always add in a “mocktail” and some chocolate covered fruit for extravagance!

Favourites in younger years, retro activites such as rollerskating, ice-skating, bowling and going to the cinema are still great fun in large groups and can provide a great alternative evening out.

Probably almost as entertaining as it is watching it on TV, a ‘Come Dine With Me’ style party could provide several nights amusement over a few weeks, taking turns to cook for your mates. This can give you a chance to catch up with mates and ensure you eat at least one home-cooked meal in the week! Why not impress your guests with some ‘mocktails’ as an alternative to wine!

There are plenty of options for those wanting to get/stay fit and healthy throughout your time at University. There are plenty of gyms that offer student discount/offers, located within the city centre and also in the surrounding areas. Virgin Active at The Light has great facilities, as does Pure Gym and Leeds Edge gym.For those who feel the gym isn’t for them, Leeds Climbing Wall is also another fun way to get some exercise.

Another option would be to gather some friends and create a 5-a-side football team. There are plenty of local leagues that you can join, so grab your friends and get picking a team name!

For those on a tighter budget, why not try running with friends? There are plenty of open spaces and parks where you can run safely. Always remember to stay safe and run with a partner when running at night.

Student Dweller Magazine have teamed up with the guys at Welcome to Yorkshire to look at some Yorkshire days out. Here is one of their suggestions with all the makings for a great day out.

The crackle of flames is all you can hear as you sit in the small wooden room, just able to glimpse the fire roaring through the gaps in the walls of the shack.

The mad monk blocks your escape, silently standing in front of the door wearing a wild-eyed grin on his face. Which horror will you meet first past the York Dungeon door? Will it be the Roman Soothsayer, the Plague Doctor, Dick Turpin? Or, perhaps it will be another figure from York’s gruesome past.

You may learn that you’ve come down with a nasty case of the plague, but don’t worry; the doctor is in and he’ll be performing a live autopsy for you to work out how best to treat your disease. If you’re unlucky, you’ll arrive right in the middle of the Viking invasion. That means you’ll have to answer to Eric Bloodaxe in his war tent, but will you receive mercy or will your head join your fellow Britons’ on a pike?

You might recognise some familiar locations around the city, among them The Shambles, The Golden Fleece and Micklegate Bar, that have been re-built indoors and given a suitably olde-worlde feel. However, you certainly won’t recognise any of the people you meet inside.

You’ll discover eight (semi) live actors during your 70 minute journey through the Dungeon, each of whom delivers a theatrical and hilarious performance as one of the unfortunates of the past.

But the building itself is full of surprises too. An experience for all the senses; don’t be surprised to hear the screams of the anguished while you’re the torturer’s guest, or to smell the foul streets of Victorian York, or to feel the rotten floorboards under your feet in one of its ancient pubs.

Sometimes, you’ll swear you’re not in the Dungeon at all; when you’ve stopped for a moment’s rest and a fireside tale at The Golden Fleece, the story really comes to life through shocking special effects. Meeting the doomed 9th Legion in the maze of Catacombs under York Minster is a particular highlight. Young children and those who don’t enjoy a shock would be advised to steer clear, but there’s no doubt that every show is crafted with fun and laughter a top priority. Expect colourful characters and naughty gags from start to finish.

Imagine Dragons have announced their first ever European tour and their debut UK release, their eagerly-awaited “Hear Me” EP, out November 25th.

Their debut album “Night Visions,” released earlier this year, featured the Radio 1 playlisted single ‘Radioactive’ as well as ‘It’s Time’ (which has sold a staggering 1,500,000 copies in the U.S.). The band achieved the best first week sales for a full-length debut album by a new rock band in over six years in the US.

Hailing from Las Vegas, the four piece; Dan Reynolds (Vox), Ben McKee (Bass), Wayne Sermon (Lead Guitar) and Daniel Platzman (Drums), have

had an astonishing rise to prominence in the last 12 months. With first week sales in the US of 83,213, thirty million plus views collectively on their YouTube videos and their tracks appearing in worldwide advertising campaigns, 2013 has been the year that Imagine Dragons have become a global phenomenon.

The band have recently announced dates for their first ever official UK tour, which includes a visit to Leeds. Hot off the heels of their debut album debuting in the billboard chart at #2, Imagine Dragons will be taking their brand of Las Vegas rock to Germany, Belgium, France, Holland and the UK this November.

With every night of the current USA tour thus far sold out, they are certainly generating a lot of hype.

“Hear Me” is the first release from Grammy award-winning producer Alex da Kid’s imprint, Kidinakorner. It combines arms-in-the-air rock choruses with the hip-hop sensibilities of the aforementioned executive producer, who has also worked with the likes of Eminem, Rihanna, U2, Dr. Dre and Nicki Minaj.

Having checked them out at Leeds festival in the summer, we’ll definitely be going back for more!

Make sure you catch them at the O2 Academy in Leeds on 16th November 2013.

Happy Mondays

Forming in autumn 2011, Peace made an instant impact with their debut single ‘Follow Baby’ gaining early support throughout Radio 1, as well as receiving great praise from critics across the board.

Landing somewhere between acid house and Aztec Camera, their whirlpool of syrupy melodies, muscular rhythms and miasmic guitars is tied together by a desire to bend their instruments’ capacity. The band have already supported the likes of Manic Street Preachers, The Vaccines and Mystery Jets across the UK and Europe and with Zane Lowe declaring their latest single ‘Bloodshake’ the hottest record

in the world, things are set to get a lot bigger for the Birmingham born band.

Having already proved themselves to be undoubtedly one of this years most exciting new bands, Peace are thrilled to announce details of their biggest UK tour to date this winter.

Since the release of their critically acclaimed debut LP ‘In Love’, Peace have become one of the biggest new British bands with an incredible live show that has taken them around the planet.

Make sure you get down to the Leeds Met Student Union to catch them on 2nd December 2013.

P E A C ECOME TO LEEDS IN DECEMBER, WITH SUPPORT FROM HOTLY-

TIPPED SHEFFIELD DUO DRENGE.Following a series of LA based studio sessions, San Fernando Valley sisters HAIM have emphatically taken all the strengths of their live shows and transformed their songs into nuggets of golden pop.

Beginning the year as the BBC Sound of 2013 winners, off the back of two limited edition EPs and a handful of sold-out UK live dates, HAIM holed themselves up in the studio and spent the next few months perfecting a record that was arguably one of the most hotly anticipated in years.

Having performed live together on stages from a very early age, it’s that innate understanding of each other’s musicianship that acts as both the strength and catalyst

behind everything the band do.

Plenty has already been made of the band’s R&B influences, but it’s a shimmering guitar-fuelled, West Coast pop that surfaces across the 11 tracks on the LP.

Seductive and smart, HAIM have spent the past 18 months relentlessly touring the globe, building on all the early praise and winning over legions of new fans wherever they play.

An undeniable favourite at both Leeds and Glastonbury Festivals this year, the band return to Leeds for Constellations Festival on 10th November 2013. See you there!

There are a range of great restaurants in Headingley to experience. If you’re looking for traditional pub food then your first stop would be The Original Oak or Skyrack, which have great dishes for very reasonable prices.

Also worth checking out is the Box. They do great food (the pizzas are a must-try) and have an array of screens for live sport, as well as pool facilities.

There’s also the gloriously traditional Brett’s Fish & Chip Restaurant, which brings your

own piece of the coast to Headingley.

For something a bit more fancy, then try dining at Trio’s, a Bar/Grill that oozes class. It’s three places in one, as downstairs from the restaurant is the Basement bar (which has a great selection of drinks) and upstairs is Skippy’s Lounge, which superbly blends its tapas dishes with its exclusive drinks menu.

For a romantic meal why not try the Ask Italian, as the name suggests specializing in all your favorite Italian dishes.

As with most other student areas, there are also a number of cheaper alternatives, including a load of take-aways including KFC and Subway.

It will only be a matter of time before you here the words “Otley” and “Run” whispered together during your first few days in Leeds. Make sure you attempt to tackle the infamous event at least once during your time in Leeds.

It starts up at Woodies on Otley Road and carries on southwards gradually reaching the City Centre. The idea is to have a drink at each of the designated bars along the route, until you reach your destination, most likely a lot merrier than when you started off!

Depending on the route taken, the Otley Run can include 18 drinking establishments:

• Woodies Ale House, Far Headingley

• The Three Horseshoes, Far Headingley

• The New Inn, Far Headingley

• Voodoo Bar, Headingley

• Headingley Taps, Headingley

• The Arc, Headingley

LEEDS CITY CENTRE & SURROUNDING AREAS Fellow student, Jess from Student Dweller tells us a bit more about what other places there are to explore outside of the city centre.

A beautiful area 4 to 5 minutes away from Leeds University, Headingley is a popular choice of accommodation for students.

This quaint area boasts traditional pubs, great for society gatherings and socialising. The Original Oak has an old fashioned feel inside with a large selection of ales, spirits and food served all day. Opposite, is the Skyrack which is popular for the guys watching their favourite football teams play.

Eating out near your doorstep is ideal and there are a large range of cuisines and restaurants to choose from like Pizza Express, Macy’s & Thai Sabai.

HYDE PARKAs students would be pleased to hear, there are a wide range of pubs in Hyde Park.

The Library is a firm favourite with offers on draughts, live music, comedy events, quizzes and much more. Their food is also fantastic, with their ‘Scream Burger’ being its best seller. The Hyde Park Pub is the main hub of students in the area with spacious seating, outside patio and pool tables. Whatever the time of day, it is always buzzing.

Popina’s, highly admired by students, whether they are hungover or not, offer big fry up breakfasts, panini’s and sandwiches at very reasonable price.

CHAPEL ALLERTONThis lovely area of suburb is located just a short taxi or bus ride away and is always good for it’s nights out. It is very popular with young professionals who are up for going out for the night but not necessarily fussed about venturing into the city centre.

To name a few good places, The Hummingbird, The Mustard Pot, Zed and Hub. Seven Arts is worth going to as well with their art exhibitions, live jazz music and their locally sourced food.

Last but not least, Further North is worth paying a visit to, which is the surburban sister of North Bar with its main selling point being unique beer from all over the world.

HORSFORTHThere are two main areas for a night out in Horsforth, spread out between Town Street and New Road Side, which is about the same as comparing the distance between Millennium Square and Call Lane. The area is not your typical student area, as a lot of working professionals also enjoy a night out here. Horsforth would be perfect if you are recommending somewhere for your parents to go out where they are not likely to bump into you and your mates.

Bar 166 is one of the best bars to try out first whether your going for a bite to eat or getting started with some pints! After that you will find SixtyToo, Sandbar, Medusa and The Old Kings Arms.

STUDENT DWELLER 32 LEEDS STUDENT GUIDE

So... I survived my fi rst ever trip to Ibiza! I honestly can't recall the last time I had two nights out in a row (hangovers aren't getting any easier the later I head into my 20's) so I was pretty proud of myself when I managed three! I had such an amazing time - there are so many big nights to choose from, and seeing Jessie J do her thing in a hot sweaty club was pretty special!

If you haven't made it out this year, or before, then check out Capital at the weekend as each week we'll be sending someone on a trip to remember!

Away from my Ibizan cherry getting popped, 2012 is a pretty big year for the county with the Olympics, but I think 2013 is going to be even bigger for Leeds. Firstly because of the vast Trinity shopping centre, which seems to be growing bigger and more impressive by the day, and secondly, The Leeds Arena. I was lucky enough to get a guided tour round the site a few weeks ago and I was absolutely blown away, the place is going to be world class, and not travelling to Sheffi eld or Manchester for gigs is a massive plus (more time for after show dancing in town!!) I'm looking forward to hearing plans for the opening night - it NEEDS to be a big party!

This month I also paid my fi rst visit to the West Yorkshire Playhouse - I must admit I'm slightly embarrassed I hadn't visited before (my A Level drama teacher would be disappointed!) but I'm making up for it now! I went to see a show called 'Loserville' - basically a geeky version of Greece, written by James Bourne from Busted (stop thinking of Year 3000!) and it was ace! Gareth Gates was in it - which explains why so many mates have spotted him recently, the shows fi nished now but they have some great stuff coming up, Guys & Dolls anyone?!

See ya next month - if you're on twitter, come say hi! @adamoh

GIVE THE

SOME CREDITSt George’s Crypt, in partnership with Leeds City Council and West Yorkshire Police, have launched an innovative scheme designed as a positive way for the public to respond to people begging in Leeds.

LEEDS HOMELESS

'I moved from house to house, then moved onto the streets. Thankfully St Georges took me in they found me a place to call home.'

The Bishop of Ripon and Leeds, The Right Revd John Packer, were some of the speakers at the launch event. The voucher scheme, called “Give Us Some Credit”, has been commissioned by the Crypt from a concept created by Leeds University Graphic Design student Hannah Tisdale. The idea was originally suggested by another Leeds University student Lauren Innes-Hill, who knew of a similar scheme in her home town of Bath. Lauren was concerned about how to respond to people begging in the street and reckoned this was a much better alternative than giving money to beggars. The Bishop of Ripon and Leeds, The Rt Revd John Packer, said: “This is a marvellous opportunity for people from all sectors of our community to contribute to the needs of those who are destitute.” He added: “St George’s Crypt, throughout its ministry to homeless people for 83 years, has always been in the forefront of initiatives to provide practical care and support to destitute and homeless people. This voucher scheme is an example of this continuing ministry.” The Crypt has been supporting an awareness campaign on begging led by Leeds City Council and West Yorkshire Police, and felt that the voucher idea was both constructive and very practical. The vouchers, for sale initially from the Crypt (located at Great George Street) with other outlets soon to be announced, are being sold

in books of five for £5, a price deliberately set to be within the reach of most people. Purchasers will be able to hand the vouchers out to people begging in the streets and they can be redeemed at either the Crypt itself (or one of their three cafes) for a meal, shower and an opportunity to talk to staff about other issues which may be concerning them. Crypt CEO Chris Fields said: “We are pleased that this voucher scheme is now ready for implementation. We hope that the price will encourage a wide range of people: business folk, students, church people to name just a few groups, to buy the vouchers. It is an elegant and practical contribution to a significant problem.” Leeds City Council lead member with responsibility for homelessness, Councillor John Hardy, said: “The voucher scheme is a great idea and gives people the chance to donate to a worthy cause, knowing that their money will go towards either providing a bed for the night or a meal,” Divisional Commander of West Yorkshire Police’s Holbeck Division, Chief Supt Paul Money, said: “It is really positive that the Crypt, the Council and the Police can work together in such a constructive way to address the issue of begging in such a positive manner. We wish the scheme every success and are delighted to endorse it.”’
