Sissy BlvdLee Lai, Katie Parrish, Merv Heers and Sam WallmanFri 16 Jan – Sun 15 MarFour queer cartoonists smoosh and smear.

Lee Lai, Katie Parrish, Merv Heers and Sam Wallman are queer cartoonists based in Melbourne. Their drawings explore gender, sexuality, class, visibility, and the ways these themes overlap. Using The Substation’s front gallery space and Transit Gallery billboards, this exhibition will examine remnants of gay liberation, reflections on contemporary queer assimilation and resilience, mincing the fine line between subtlety and obviousness.

Time: Opening Thurs 15 Jan, 6pm–8pmSupported by Hobsons Bay City Council. Part of GoWest and Midsumma Festival 2015.

Then get ready to grin as your hosts have you moving, swinging and singing in a special night to remember.

The Girl Who Never Was (by Erik Bünger) meets The Carousel (by Soda_Jerk)Sat 24 Jan Two lecture performances. Coinciding with Trilogies exhibition, the exhibiting artists will present their internationally renowned 60 minute lecture performances, a medium popular since the 1960s that blurs the boundaries between performance art and pedagogy.

The Girl Who Never Was (2013) by Erik Bünger is the final in a trilogy of works that takes us on a winding trip through history. A history where a voice echoes forwards and backwards through time, retroactively changing history and changing the present from the vantage point of the past.

The Carousel (2011) traces an alternative history of film as a burial crypt where we collectively commune with the dead. Within this is a live video essay narration, used to navigate an eclectic matrix of film samples, producing a multi-channel video essay where it makes perfect sense to conjoin media theory, mysticism, deconstruction, kung-fu, vintage sci-fi, zombie flicks and techno horror.

Time: 7.30pm (approximate running time: 120 minutes with a 20 minute interval between lecture performances)Ticket Info: All tickets $15. Bookings online at thesubstation.org.au or at the door (unless sold out). Image: The Third Man, 2010, lecture performance, Erik Bünger. Photography by: Laura Gianetti.

An Auslan interpreter will be provided for this lecture performance.

C.W. StonekingFri 27 FebFollowing on from his wildly successful national tour and the release of his much-lauded new album Gon’ Boogaloo, C.W. Stoneking is all set to bring his tunes to The Substation this February. Released on October 17 2014, it has been a six year wait for the latest taste of C.W.’s inimitable musical stylings.

Gone are the sepia-toned tales of marooned adventures in the tropics of his last release, the ARIA Award winning Jungle Blues, this time replaced with the latest invention in the world of C.W. Stoneking, electricity! C.W. has stashed his afore-favoured vintage National guitar and banjo combo for a shiny gold Fender and an extra-large helping of rock ‘n’ gospel dancehall blues to deliver 12 tracks recorded directly to tape with his full band, his very own hokum wall of sound.

Don’t miss your chance to catch this enigmatic and charismatic performer live!

Time: Doors open at 7.30pm, Show starts at 8pmTicket Info: All tickets $42 (standing tickets only for this event), Meal and show package $70Bookings online at thesubstation.org.au or at the door (unless sold out)
