THE SUCCESS CONTINUES: 1990-1999 The Club has earned an enviable record in the standard of administration that has been achieved and maintained by the Management Committee over a considerable period of time. Competent administration enhances the performances of all teams and those responsible for this are to be commended for their loyalty and contribution. 1990 In 1990 the amalgamation of the South Australian Hockey Association and the South Australian Women’s Hockey Association took place. The Club President expressed concern about the increasing amount of money required to administer the activities of the SAHA Board of Directors and The Pines Stadium. As a result of this the participation costs for players was increasing each year. Inaugural South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) scholarships were awarded to Steve Button, Andrew Meredith and John Petruzzelli. Steve Button and Andrew Meredith were also awarded visiting scholarships to the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Perth. Trevor Stockley advised of his unavailability as Club Treasurer for the ensuing season. When he took office in 1983, the Club Balance Sheet showed assets to the value of $64,000. When he stood down at the end of 1990 the Club was in an extremely healthy position, having assets of $505,000 – a very substantial improvement indeed. Staffing of the canteen on a roster basis of all senior teams was introduced this year and proved very successful. An excerpt from the President’s Annual Report stated: ‘The canteen is not only very important from the income which it generates; it continues to enhance the Club’s reputation for the facilities and friendliness it provides to all visiting club members and supporters.’ Club strength was maintained at 20 teams and premierships were won in Divisions 2, 3, 6, Under 17, Under 15 and Under 11 grades in the men’s competition. The allocation of State League matches to club grounds dropped significantly, with Adelaide University allocated 6 matches, Port Adelaide 13 and Woodville 10. 1991 In 1991 the Club won the Men’s Pre-season Foundation Cup Tournament, the State Junior Under 15 Championship and was runners-up in the girls State Junior Under 17 Championship. The major highlight was achieved by the Women’s State League team in reaching the finals for the first time, finishing third, under the coaching of Sandy Pisani, who continued in that capacity for the following three seasons. SASI scholarships were again awarded to Steve Button, Andrew Meredith and John Petruzzelli. Amy and Robyn Hampton were selected in the Women’s SASI squad. Charmaine Simms was selected for a full-time scholarship at the AIS (Perth) and was subsequently selected in the Australian Under 21 Squad that toured Holland and Spain with the AIS team. Andrew Meredith was selected in the Australian Under 21 team and in the AIS team that toured the United Kingdom. He was leading goal scorer for that tour. There was talk of a Quiz Night being promoted and it was suggested that Mark McKenzie be the compere. There was some concern about this as at a recent Friday night draw he was talking a combination of shorthand and left-hand Swahili – any other suggestions!

During this season there were only four State League matches played at the Club, two men and two women, with a similar allocation to both Adelaide University and Woodville grounds. All other State League matches were played at The Pines Stadium. This allocation of matches had a severe impact upon both bar and canteen trade. Premierships were won by the Men’s State League (first since 1983) and Division 2 (sixth in succession) and Division 6 women. The Under 15 boys won the State Junior Championship. Apart from these premierships there were five teams that finished second and four teams that finished third. An excellent result from 10 men’s and 8 women’s teams. A comment from a visitor at a Club social function – ‘You have a lot of animals at this Club!’ He was referring to Horse (Steve Harris), Ox (Geoff Allen), Dogsy (Jack McGrath), Camel (Brett Arriola), Moose (Mark Moore) and Wombat (Bill Drewett). The Arthur Weir Trophy for the Best Club Member was awarded to David McGrath and the Men’s State League team won the Allan Drever Trophy for the Best Team Performance.

1992 1992 could be called Sandy Pisani’s year. As Captain-Coach of the Women’s State League team she won the SAHA Best and Fairest Player Trophy and was appointed as an Australian Selector by the Australian Women’s Hockey Association. She was also selected as Coach of the Year by her fellow senior team Club coaches. The women’s State League team rating was elevated from 7th to 2nd position in two years under her coaching.

Sandy Pisani – SAHA Women’s Best & Fairest 1992

Paul Lewis was at the Australian Institute of Sport in Perth and he gained selection in the 1992 Olympic team. He was strongly supported by the Club during the time he was with the AIS, including a money raising function at the Club. A copy of a letter from him to the Club President, Dennis Meredith, was published in The Magpie, April 1989 stated:

‘Just a short note to thank you for your support and encouragement over the past couple of years. Also thanks to the Club for its support. Now all I have to do is try my hardest to stay there. Hope the Club has a successful year and definitely looking forward to playing for Port when I come back to Adelaide.’

However, on his return to Adelaide he chose to play Club hockey at Grange, a decision that lowered his standing of loyalty to zero. Team numbers were down this year to 10 men and 6 women and premierships were won by men in Division 2 (7th in succession), Division 3 and Under 15. Andrew Meredith was awarded a full-time AIS scholarship in Perth in preparation for the World Junior Cup and Kelly-Gene Young was selected in an Australian Under 16 team. All underage teams performed very well this year with one premiership (Under 15 boys), two runners-up, a third and a fourth, while the Under 17 boys won the State Junior Championship at that level. However, there was some concern about the number of players who were available. Some boys played at two levels to make up the numbers in the Under 13 and Under 15 teams. It was anticipated that the clubs with synthetic turf grounds would receive an equitable number of State League matches on their home grounds during this season. However, this did not eventuate. A total of 19 matches were played at the satellite stadiums – Adelaide University 6, Brighton 2, Port Adelaide 3 and Woodville 8 – with the remainder of games played at The Pines Stadium. This was the last year in which the Australian Men’s Senior Championship was played at the one location –a long-standing event that was hosted by the individual State Associations on a rostered rotation basis, giving each State’s hockey supporters and players the opportunity to witness Australia’s best players in intense competition.

This tournament, which ran for 12 days, was recognised by its standards of play and organisation as one of the best in the world for a National Championship. Many hockey supporters were disappointed when the Championship format was changed to a National Hockey League system.

1993 The 1993 season must be recorded as a further milestone in the already illustrious record of the Club, with both the men’s and women’s State League teams winning a premiership double. This was a first ever for both Port Adelaide and South Australian hockey. Congratulations to coaches Trevor Cibich and Sandy Pisani and to all players and officials of both teams. Premiership success was also gained by the men’s Division 2 and Under 18 teams and the women’s Under 18 team. Andrew Meredith won the SAHA Best and Fairest Player Trophy, as well as being the State League’s top goal scorer. He represented South Australia at senior level as well as captaining the State Under 21 team at the Australian Championship. Kelly-Gene Young was selected in the Australian Under 18 team.

Andrew Meredith – SAHA Men’s Best & Fairest 1993

Club President, Dennis Meredith, reported in the Annual Report:

‘The administration of a Club such as Port Adelaide continues to be a challenge. The efforts of your management committee over the past season have been great. We continue to be envied by other Clubs for our administrative expertise, and all members of management have made great contributions during 1993. The extra responsibilities Terry Victory assumed when he had to take on the role of Secretary of both the men’s and women’s sections of the Club is worthy of special mention. I am pleased to report that following negotiations with the Port Adelaide Council, the loan for the synthetic turf has been re-financed over the next five years. This re-financing will enable the ground to be paid off over 5 years, rather than 10 years. I record my thanks to those officers of the Port Adelaide Council who have facilitated these arrangements.’

And some excerpts from the Senior Coaches in the Annual Report:

‘Finally, to the administration and supporters of the Port Adelaide Hockey Club may I extend my sincere thanks. Coaching is not an easy task but is made much easier due to the expert administration and loyal support from players and members.’ Trevor Cibich ‘Well done team! I would hope that this effort will not stand alone, and that we will continue to be a strength in the Women’s State League.’ Sandy Pisani

On Thursday nights after training meals were provided for players and other members. Steve Jeffery, Pam Searle, Marilyn Young and Lorraine Line were mainly responsible for this popular feature.

1994 The 1994 season was without doubt another vintage year for the Club. It remained the Premier Club of South Australia, winning the men’s Quit and Win Cup and men’s State League premiership for the second year in succession, being runners-up in the women’s State League, winning a further 6 premierships, as well as being runners-up in two other grades. Congratulations to Trevor Cibich and Sandy Pisani for their supreme efforts as State League coaches. Trevor indicated that he was taking a spell from coaching, after 11 of the past 14 years as the senior men’s coach. He had tremendous success during this period, and the Club will be forever grateful for his magnificent contribution. Trevor’s efforts with the Club were recognised by the South Australian Hockey Association with his being awarded a State Award in recognition of outstanding service to hockey in South Australia. During May the Club hosted the State Under 16 Girl’s Championship and the following month several grades of the State Country Championships were also played at Port Adelaide. Sandy Pisani was re-elected as a National Women’s Selector and because of the time involved in that role, together with her role as a Director on the SA Hockey Board she advised the Club that she would not be continuing as coach in the ensuing season. In her four years with the Club, she brought the women’s State League team from virtual obscurity to playing off in the past three grand finals (with one premiership success). In her report as the State League Women’s Coach in the Annual Report she said:

‘Port Adelaide is an exceptional Club, managed professionally and competently – one which has the desire to succeed and the determination to continue to be number one in the State, both in men and women. The necessary ingredients are in place to ensure that those members and players at Port Adelaide will continue to achieve success.’

Premierships were also won by the men’s Divisions 2, 3, 7, 8 and Under 14 and by the women’s Under 18 teams. This made a total of seven Premierships for the year, plus the pre-season Quit and Win Cup. A record for the Club! Special mention was made of the efforts of the Men’s Division 2 team, very ably coached by Steve Harris. This team won its 9th successive premiership in this grade – an unbelievable achievement. Adam Jeffery won the Best Player Trophy at the Under 21 Australian Championship and was the top goal scorer in the State League competition. Kelly-Gene Young was selected in the Australian Under 18 team. Strong representation continued in State teams by both men and women at Senior, Under 21, Under 18 and Under 15 levels. In addition, Adam Jeffery, Ryan McGrath and Sean Pearce were selected in the Australian Under 18 train-on squad and Tobi Cibich in the Australian Women’s Senior Development Squad. In 1987 Dennis Meredith gave a commitment to serve as President for three years. Eight years down the track he declared it was now time to step down from that office. The service and commitment which he showed in that period was of inestimable value to the Club. Steve Jeffery, Sam Clohessy, Marilyn Young, Pam Searle, Margaret Bevan and Lorraine Line again combined to provide after-training counter meals on Thursday evenings. The Annual Dinner was again a great success with approximately 130 members attending. It was held at the Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron at Outer Harbor.

1995 A Club is often judged by the performance of its most senior teams and 1995 saw both the men’s (its third in succession) and women’s State League teams win their respective premierships. The Division 3 men were also successful. At the close of the 1994 season Trevor Cibich advised of his intention to ‘have a spell from coaching’. However, his appointment as coach of the State League women’s team for 1995 was warmly applauded and his spell from coaching put on hold. Anthony Haynes was appointed as coach of the men’s State League team. A great result for both coaches, premierships first up for each of them in the men’s and women’s State League. Of the five senior men’s teams all made the finals in their respective grades. The women fielded four teams. Dennis Meredith’s significant contribution to hockey in the State was recognised with Life Membership of the South Australian Hockey Association. Other highlights for the season included – Tobi Cibich and Kelly-Gene Young selected in the Australian Women’s Youth Squad, Kelly-Gene Young captain of the Australian Women’s Under 18 team and State League highest goal scorers were Emma Voigt and Adam Jeffery. Marilyn Young and Neil Pentecost were elected Life Members.

1996 By 1996 the number of teams had decreased significantly since the late 1980’s when in 1988, 1989 and 1990 the Club fielded 20 teams. This year the Club fielded 14 teams. However, there were five underage boys and girls teams, three of which were successful in winning premierships. This was an encouraging sign for the future. The women’s Premier League team won its second consecutive premiership and the men’s Premier League Reserve team was also successful. Unfortunately, 1996 was a poor one as far as the finances of the Club were concerned, and a number of factors contributed to this. It was proposed that restructuring of some areas within the Club’s operation would occur in the ensuing year. The President in the Annual Report emphasised the necessity for all members to honour their commitments to allocated duties in the interests of the Club. There was some improvement in the number of home matches for the Premier League teams this season, - a total of nine matches.

The Premier League fixtures were very controversial to many. After a complete round of matches was played the teams were then graded into two pools, with another two complete rounds being played in each pool. Finals matches were then played in each pool. Fortunately, this system was not used again in the following and subsequent seasons. Premier League coaches were Brian Jordan (men’s team) and Trevor Cibich (women’s team). Tobi Cibich and Kelly-Gene Young were again selected in the Australian Women’s Youth Squad, and the good representation in the various State teams continued. Bill Drewett and Jeff Wait were selected in the Australian Veterans team. Premierships were won by the women’s State League, Under 16 and Under 14 teams and the men’s Under 16 team. The sterling work of Charmain Wait, Jan Victory and Lorraine Line in the canteen continued throughout the season, work for which the Club is very much indebted.

1997 1997 was again a successful year. However, it could have been much better – of the 14 teams fielded, 12 played in the finals of their respective grades, but only the men’s Premier League and women’s Under 18 teams were successful in winning premierships. Brian Jordan was the men’s Premier League coach, and Trevor Cibich the women’s Premier League coach. Tobi Cibich and Kelly-Gene Young were again selected in the Australian Women’s Senior Youth squad. The Club had four representatives in the women’s National Hockey League team, the Adelaide Suns, namely, Tobi Cibich, Rachel Hampton, Melissa Kenley and Kelly-Gene Young. It also had five players in the men’s National League Team, the Adelaide Hotshots, namely, Troy Clohessy, Adam Jeffery, Sean Pearce, Kris Schiller and Craig Victory. Two men’s NHL fixtures were played at the Club ground during the year, the first NHL fixtures in South Australia to be played away from The Pines Stadium. Adam Jeffery was the leading goal scorer in the men’s Premier League competition, whilst Emma Voigt and Kelly-Gene Young shared that honour in the women’s Premier League. Dennis Meredith was awarded the Official of the Year (Hockey) in the Australian Sports Commission National Officiating Program Awards.

Dennis Meredith receiving the Official of the Year award from Bill Deller, Chairman National Officiating Program.

The Australian Men’s Veterans Hockey Championship were played in South Australia in October and over 80 of the 190 matches programmed for the entire Championship were played at Port Adelaide, the remainder being played at The Pines Stadium. This Championship extended over a period of 13 days and the revenue gained by the canteen and bar was a significant boost to the Club finances. The feedback received from players and spectators involved in this Championship indicated that the quality of service provided by Club members was equal to the high standard set in previous years for such events and was generously acknowledged by all involved. The allocation of Premier League matches to the Club ground was an improvement compared with previous years, with a total of 15 matches being allocated to Port Adelaide. In all seven synthetic turf grounds were available to be used for matches. These grounds were the Pines Stadium, plus six satellite stadiums, namely, Port Adelaide, Woodville, Adelaide University, Seacliff, Adelaide and North East, as well as the Prince Alfred College ground which was used only for PAC home and away matches. With this number of grounds now available, it was unlikely that there would be much, if any, improvement on the number of games allocated to the Club ground in the future.

It was with sorrow that the Club lost another of its great stalwarts with the passing of Jack McGrath. Jack was a vigorous and fearless player for the Club, joining it in 1947 following service in the Royal Australian Navy. In later years he was appointed as the Manager of the South Australian Under 21 team, holding that position from 1974-81. He was elected a Life Member of the Club in 1973. The following obituary was published in the Hockey SA Hockey News in August 1997:

‘Hockey loses one of its colourful characters Jack McGrath, one of the real characters of SA Hockey passed away peacefully at home on 22 July 1997, aged 71. Jack’s hockey career with the Port Adelaide District Hockey Club began in 1946 and continued uninterrupted until the time of his death. His involvement in SA hockey was extensive – a player, coach, administrator, State Team Manager and avid parochial supporter. Jack’s playing career extended from the late 1940’s to the early 60’s. He told the story against himself that his decision to “hang up his boots” was made as a result of a flying missile that hit while playing a home match (the missile in fact being the stiletto head of the shoe of an agitated woman opposition spectator).

As a Club administrator he was President, Treasurer and Management Committee member at various times. He also undertook coaching at the Club, both seniors and juniors as well as at the Largs Bay Primary School.

He wore the State blazer with great pride as Manager of the SA Under 21 Men’s team from 1974-1981 – one of the most successful eras of the Colts team. He was enormously proud of his involvement with these teams, regarding it as the highlight of his hockey career.

It was as a team manager and sideline supporter that Jack gained his reputation as one of the truly great characters of SA club hockey. His passionate and colourful support of the Magpies was legendary. His philosophy of playing hard on the field and enjoying a drink with the opposition afterwards was one of his hallmarks and earned him the many friends he had across the board in SA hockey.

Jack McGrath will be sadly missed and all of hockey extends its deepest sympathy to his family.’

Jack McGrath, son John and grandson Ryan

1998 Apart from its successes on the playing field, the most important event for the Club in 1998 was the final loan payment on the Club’s synthetic ground to the City of Port Adelaide Enfield. During the season the Club successfully co-hosted both the State Junior Championship and the State Country Championship, proving once again the capabilities of the members and supporters in conducting such events in a manner which gains respect and commendation from all who were involved.

A Past Players Group was established this year and it generated a considerable amount of interest by reintroducing many past members to the Club. The focus of interest was aimed at the Club’s men’s and women’s Premier League teams on five specific Saturdays during the season. These were the only occasions when the men’s and women’s Premier League teams played at home. The response from past members was gratifying to the Organising Committee as 24 of these became financial members of the Club once again. In conjunction with the Past Players Group a Legends Team was selected of former players who represented the Club, the State or Australia during careers of distinction as Port Adelaide players. The Legends Team comprised the following players:

PORT ADELAIDE LEGENDS TEAM – 1934-1998

Sadly, Ross Tapping passed away in August of this year and the Club lost another valuable Life Member. Ross was a member of the Past Players Group Committee at the time of his death. Dennis Meredith was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the South Australian Hockey Association, and his high level management and sports administrative skills were soon evident. It was pleasing to note an increase of two junior teams from the previous year. The senior coaches were Iain Flockhart (men) and Trevor Cibich (women), and they both had the pleasure of seeing their teams being successful in winning the respective Premier League premierships.

In the past eight years the Club has won 11 Premier League titles, six by the men and 5 by the women. Other premierships were won this year by the men’s Division 3 and 5 teams as well as the Under 17 boys. Craig Victory was awarded a full-time scholarship with the Australian Institute of Sport in Perth to commence from January 1999. The trophies for the Premier League Leading Goal scorers were won by Adam Jeffery and Kelly-Gene Young. Iain Flockhart was named Hockey SA’s Most Outstanding Premier League Coach for 1998.

1999

One of the most important considerations by the Management Committee during 1999, the last year of this decade, related to the core of the Club’s playing activities – the synthetic turf pitch. It became evident that some replacement or extensive repair work was required and it was resolved to replace a section at both ends of the pitch from the 25 yard line to the goal line across the full width of the pitch. Officially opened in April 1987, this synthetic turf pitch has served the Club very well and was completely paid off in 1998. This replacement has cost the club $43,500 and has helped to maintain the standard of the best ‘home ground’ hockey facilities in the State.

Social activities were well supported during the year and the efforts of Charmaine Collett and Jo Haynes were commended in the Annual Report. The financial benefit to the Club from these activities was excellent.

During the playing season the Club co-hosted the State Junior Championships (April), the State Country Championships (June) and the 7th Australian Masters Games Hockey Section (September-October). The financial gains from these tournaments were very significant. The efforts of those dedicated members and volunteers who staffed the canteen and bar during these events were of a very high standard. The courtesy, quality and range of catering and service once again upheld the high standards that the Club expects at such events.

The Australian Masters Games was attended by people from overseas and interstate and it is understood that many were impressed by the standards that were provided at Port Adelaide. These Games were last held in Adelaide in 1989 when a Port Adelaide team was successful in winning a Gold Medal. This year some of those players were again successful. The Club fielded two teams in this tournament in the 35+ and the 40+ age groups. Both teams were successful in winning a Gold Medal. There were several players from other Clubs in each team, but the majority was Port Adelaide members.

The Club fielded 15 teams again this year, consisting of five men’s and three women’s senior teams and three boys and three girls under age teams as well as an Under 11 mixed team. The Senior Coaches this year were Anthony Haynes (men) and Trevor Cibich (women). Both were appointed again at the end of the year for the following season. The State League Reserves women’s team won the only senior grade premiership and in the junior grades the Under 17 boys, Under 15 boys and Under 15 girls were all successful. In addition, the Division 1 and Division 2 women each won their section of the SmartPlay Pre Season Tournament. There was an excellent improvement in the Club’s financial position by the end of the year and this was influenced greatly by the good trading figures from the three tournaments played at the Club, the input from social activities and some stringent policy adopted by the Treasurer throughout the year. The Annual Dinner was held literally on the club ‘Home Ground”. A marquee was erected on the playing field adjacent to the Clubrooms and a very successful event was enjoyed by all that attended. A highlight of the evening was the auction of a Port Power Football, generously provided by Rob Clements, which raised a tidy sum for the Club. Another significant part of the program for the evening was the presentation to the Best and Fairest players of the Club men’s and women’s State League teams of the inaugural Magpie Medal. The winners were Sean Pearce and Tobi Cibich. Craig Victory was selected in the Australian team to play against New Zealand in the Oceania Cup during September and his performances in this tournament convinced the National Selectors that he should be included in the Australian team to contest the Champions Trophy played in Brisbane in November. In addition, during the year he played NHL for the Adelaide Hotshots and was a member of the South Australian Under 21 team. As a result of his outstanding year he was selected as the Junior Sports Start in the Advertiser/Channel 7 Sports Start of the Year Awards.
