camp Steward afternoon adventureScamp steward afternoon adventures is just right for your adventurous camper. whether go-cart racing, moon bouncing, or laser tagging, the possibilities for a good time are endless at camp steward. afternoons are action-packed with off-campus field trips or in-house visits with local celebrities. lunch will be provided.

choose a morning specialty camp and attend camp Steward for an additional $165 for all-day fun! afternoon-only is $200 per week.

Spartacare - afternoonSdo you need childcare after steward summer experience camps? spartacare is here to help! the program is available for campers who are enrolled in a summer experience camp during the week they are registered for spartacare. supervision will be provided as late as 5:30 p.m. steward staff will escort campers to and from classes and camps.

jewelry makingduring this week-long camp, students will learn how to create beautiful hand-made jewelry. this intensive beading class will instruct campers in jewelry-making techniques. students will complete at least three projects, including earrings, bracelets, and necklaces—using pearls, crystals, hand-made paper, and glass beads. students will also learn how to crochet jewelry! after the camp ends, students will have supplies to continue making jewelry. previous students are welcome—you can always learn something new.

glaSS fuSion and claylet’s fuse some fun! this two-week camp integrates two types of media to encourage each participant’s creativity. campers will first learn hand-building skills and clay-work techniques. they will then use their new skills to incorporate glass into their masterpieces. fusing glass is an exciting process that everyone will enjoy.

artS and craftSit’s summer time and that means beach time! campers will create several “beachy” projects during a week of craft camp. students will work each morning on creating wonderful summer gifts and decorations with a seaside, summer theme. students will also have the opportunity to express themselves by creating their own projects from the “crafty” table. the camp will culminate with an art display and reception for parents on friday.

ready, Set, drum! campers join the “luvdrm” man at steward, as they take a musical journey through the world of drums. campers will have the opportunity to explore various types of drumming, beginning with basic snare drum techniques and progress-ing to application on the drum set. areas covered will include drum circle, basic reading skills, and rudiments. with a solid foundation in the basics, campers will then progress to the drum set where they’ll cover grooves such as rock, jazz, blues, and latin. campers will even have the chance to get hands-on experience, as they build their own instrument. students will perform for family and friends at the end of the week. no prior musical experience is necessary.

darkroom photographyusing 35mm cameras, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of black and white photography. the class will first take field trips to photograph areas around the community. they will then return to campus to use the black and white darkroom to print their images. lessons will include camera operation, composition, lighting, subject matter, and other principles to help create interesting photographic art. we provide film, processing, paper, and chemistry. bring your own manual 35mm camera to class or borrow one of ours during class time.

point and Shoot - digital creativity campers will shoot around campus and take field trips to encourage individual expression and creativity. this exciting course will provide students with a comprehensive introduc-tion to the exciting world of digital photography. students will study composition, perspective, light, color, movement, and learn to express their creativity using their digital cameras. students must provide a point and shoot camera or digital single lens reflex camera.

f-Stop, Shoot, and Shutter - digital creativitywant to find out what white balance, resolution, and mega pixels are all about? in this class, you will learn how to use your digital camera more effectively, review the fundamentals of image capture, and camera operation, proper exposure and effective composition. students are expected to provide a digital single lens reflex camera with manual adjustments. please check with instructor to see whether or not your camera qualifies.

adobe photoShopthis class provides a comprehensive introduction to adobe photoshop cs5. in this course, you will learn the basics of image enhancement and how to manipulate your photo-graphs, using both digital capture and scanned sources. basic program operation and management will be emphasized. examples of topics covered are cropping, making selections, retouching, color balance correction, and use of photoshop layers, layer masks, and sharpening.

machine Sewing and faShion camp so many choices, so many patterns, so much fun! welcome to the wonderful world of machine sewing, where yOu design the curriculum. campers will have the opportunity to choose, create, and design one-of-a-kind fashions, adorable stuffed animals, room decorations, quilts, and other fun accessories in the fabrics of their choice. whether you are new to sewing or a seasoned seamstress, our expert staff will work with campers individually and in a group setting to ensure success and growth. Our instructors will patiently teach you how to use a sewing machine (a machine is provided for each camper), read patterns, take measurements, match colors, and help create a sewing kit that we will fill with our favorite tools to take home. Join us as we create a new, fresh, on-trend catalog of patterns (including those from our partner simplicity) that allow campers to choose and create as much as you want!

Our cheerful staff will engage girls and boys of all ages in a variety of traditional needle-arts skills in a fun and modern way. in this project-based program, campers have the opportunity to learn knitting and crocheting, hand sewing, embroidery, and needle-felting and crafting – all with incredible results. Our days are filled with different techniques, moving from station to station, captivating our campers while they make stuffed animals, room decorations, fashion accessories, clothing, toys, and camper-inspired projects! the result: making creatively cool projects with new friends while having fun! additionally, every camper will take home a “handwork kit,” filled with our favorite supplies so they can practice anytime.

excellent adventures await our youngest campers. whether they are honing their fine motor skills or getting acclimated to the upcoming year of jk or kindergarten, these camps are designed to exercise the young body and mind.

head, ShoulderS, kneeS, and toeSthis camp will focus on strengthening the rising junior kindergartner’s fine and gross motor skills, incorporating music, movement, and multisensory activities using a variety of materials. this is a process-oriented class that will promote essential school readiness skills, which include cutting, gluing, tracing shapes, and much more. this class is limited to eight campers.

rock, SciSSorS, paperget ready for some fun! the focus of this busy two-week program is to strengthen visual, fine-motor, and general school readiness skills. a wide variety of multimedia activities and interactive play will be incorporated daily. this camp is designed for children currently in kindergarten or entering

kindergarten in the fall. the program is staffed by a learning specialist/kindergarten teacher and a registered occupational therapist. rock, scissors, paper is limited to ten students.

we ask that parents of potential campers speak with charlene wilton, director of the center for the advancement of learning, at 804-565-2314 before registering for this camp.

kindergarten play camp here’s a fun way for children entering steward’s kindergarten class to learn about school in a play-oriented environment. the week-long activities will help students feel comfortable in a brand-new setting, while being introduced to the routines of kindergarten. children will explore campus, meet many new classmates, and interact with faculty. this camp serves as a great way to welcome your child into the steward school community.

these camps are designed to help elementary school students channel their energy, discover their potential, and prepare for the year ahead. children have the option of attending a half-day of academic camp or attending a full-day of camp with our roll-over option to camp Steward.

wonderful wordSthis exciting program, led by steward teachers, is designed to immerse children in focused reading and writing activities. this two-week camp addresses the literacy needs of children at all levels of reading and writing ability.

highlights will include opportunities to read books, recipes, craft directions, and poems; reading instruction designed to build decoding skills, fluency, comprehension, and an under-standing of how to choose appropriate reading material (“just right” books); writing instruction focusing on the quality of written story telling and the mechanics of writing; and daily word work to build skills in phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling, and handwriting. this camp specializes in individual, small-group, and whole-group instruction with a low teacher-to-child ratio.

Step up to SucceSSthis two-week math and language camp will help ease your child’s transition from second to third or third to fourth grade. taught by steward third-grade teachers, this camp will present students with the math and language arts concepts that will

help them become better readers, writers, and mathematical thinkers for the new school year.

the program includes practice of addition and subtraction facts or multiplication and division facts through the use of games, manipulatives, and art activities; development of problem-solving and logic strategies that will build your child’s confidence in completing word problems; reading comprehension skills that will be introduced through the use of award-winning literature and nonfiction topics; proofreading and editing skills in conjunction with writing activities.

keyboarding we live in a technological world, and here’s your child’s chance to improve his or her keyboarding skills before school begins! campers will spend the morning learning the keyboard and building skills. a variety of keyboarding software will be used to ensure children have fun while learning. students will practice their skills by creating a story in microsoft word and illustrating the story using kidpix or storybook weaver. campers will also have a chance to enjoy keyboarding games and take a break with other fun, educational software!

middle School language artS this camp, led by middle school english teacher margaret maclin, is designed specifically for middle school students. the session provides five full days of enrichment in reading, writing, vocabulary development, research methods, and study skills. each day, students will enjoy a wide variety of hands-on activities including an internet scavenger hunt, a vocabulary relay race, and the production of a camp newspaper to be published at the end of the session. during the camp, each student will learn the sQ3r method of active reading, complete

a group research assignment with documentation, and finish one of the books required for summer reading. this camp is strongly recommended for students who desire a structured time for daily reading, discussion, and completion of at least one required summer reading book or for students who will be new to steward’s middle school in the fall.

Summer writing inStitute Join steward upper school english teacher terri shelton, as she leads our summer writing courses. choose either creative writing or preparing for high school writing and reading. each student will be assessed on his or her writing skills throughout each course. a formal writing assessment will be mailed home at the course’s completion. for steward students, a copy of the assessment will also be given to the student’s english teacher for the following year. preparing for high school writing and reading is strongly recommended for students who will be new to steward’s upper school in the fall.

preparing for high School writing and reading during the preparing for high school writing and reading class, students will focus on academic, formula writing. students will learn about and complete several five-paragraph essays. they will explore and put into practice the writing process, complete multiple drafts of their writing, and learn the skills of editing and revising. basic mechanical, grammatical, and usage rules will be reviewed. this class is intended for beginning writing students, those who need extra help with their writing, or those new to the steward upper school.

tutoringextra support is available during the summer months. the center for the advancement of learning (cal) provides enrichment and support programs to help reinforce classroom activities covered during the year.

students in all grade levels who need extra help will receive personalized instruction from qualified tutors in one-on-one sessions through the steward school’s center for advancement of learning (cal). lower school tutors will work to strengthen the student’s weak areas in the curriculum basics. for middle and upper school students, tutoring is available for each academic subject. development of good study skills is stressed during tutorials. in some cases, small groups may be possible depending upon skill needs, grade level, and schedule. parents will receive a written report from the child’s tutor upon completion of the tutorial. please contact the cal office at the Steward School to arrange tutoring by calling 804-565-2314.

Secret agent labJames bond? macgyver? austin powers? do you think you have what it takes to discover “who done it?” if so, this camp is for you! from secret communications and detective crime science to the inner workings of our cells and cool chemistry, each day we sleuth out the answer to many of life’s mysteries!

innovation expedition Join us on an exciting journey to explore the significance and process of innovation. five full days of activities focused on learning principles of design and build, sustainability, and the process of innovation. the camp will allow each participant to join the “innovation challenge”—creating better or more effective products, processes, services, technologies, or ideas that might be accepted by markets, governments, and society. the innovation challenge will focus on one of three catego-ries: food, landscape, or design. students will participate in a variety of project-based learning activities—digital design, food preparation, landscape design, exploring new technol-ogy—to help them determine where to focus their efforts. the design and layout of the new bryan innovation lab will be an important part of our journey. campers will take field trips to local resources and meet and work with architects, engineers, landscape designers, farmers, chefs, and steward teachers who are working to build the bryan innovation lab.

registration for the summer experience begins on february 1, 2012. camps and class sizes are limited, so be sure to register early to reserve your space. all registration fees must be paid in full at the time of registration. registrations will not be processed without payment.

a confirmation email will be sent to all campers’ parents/guardians upon receipt of registration. an informational letter including drop-off and pick-up locations, supply lists (if necessary), and other pertinent information will be sent to campers along with the confirmation email. please keep your receipt for taxes! for additional or specific information, please contact summer experience staff at the emails listed in our resident expert section.

cancellation of classes

there are minimum class sizes for all camps and programs. the steward school reserves the right to cancel any course, program, or activity as necessary. in such cases, a full refund will be made. tuition is refundable only if the steward school cancels a course or program. no refunds will be made for individuals who are asked to leave a camp or program because of behavior. no refunds are given for academic camps for any reason.

allergies and medications

important notice to parents of campers with allergies: the steward school camps are nOt peanut, wheat, dairy, or allergen free. we make every reasonable accommodation for campers with allergies. if your child is allergic to certain foods, we ask that you provide a snack each day.

if your child is in a camp where cooking or food preparation is part of the curriculum, please discuss your child’s dietary needs with the teacher. children who require the use of an epi-pen for life threatening emergencies will be asked to keep their epi-pen with them at all times (a small back pack or fanny pack works well). Our license from the department of social services does not permit us to distribute medications of any kind.

a registered nurse is on duty during the weeks of camp steward and most camp counselors and coaches are trained in cpr and first aid.

photographs

unless we have a written letter to the contrary, the steward school exercises the right to use any photographs taken of individuals participating in the summer experience in its promotional publications.

payment

fees for all summer experience programs must be paid in full at the time of registration.
