ACRONYMS AND THEIR MEANING
By Tom Howlin
We often find ourselves using a language unique to Sunflower, without realizing that there are a great many
people in the community who have not been exposed to these abbreviations/acronyms. So, in probably the
shortest article I will ever write, let me try and decipher at least some of them.
ARC – Architectural Review Committee – where submissions for changes to the exterior of your house or
property go for review and consideration.
PRAC – Preservation of Reserve Asset Committee. They monitor the condition of all our fixed assets and help
to maintain the reserve asset study done by ARI.
STF – Strategic (planning) Task Force – a newly formed task force that is charged with plotting the future of
Sunflower one to ten years down the road.
CIF – Community Improvement Fund – Our basket of money, collected from buyers only, with which the
community can make improvements to existing facilities or acquire new fixed assets. Requires a vote of the
community to spend.
RFP – Request For Proposal. This is basically our system for soliciting bids from vendors.
ARI - Arizona Reserves Incorporated. The company contracted to do our annual reserve study.
Reserves – Those monies set aside on a regular basis to replace or repair our fixed assets.
SFTC – Sunflower Technology Club.
PB – Pickleball.
SFC – Sunflower Community (sometimes just SF).
SCA – Sunflower Community Association.
HOA – Homeowners Association.
BOD – Board of Directors.
I’m sure there are some I’m forgetting but we will be putting a permanent list of these up on the
Sunflowerliving.com website so people can refer to it whenever we start speaking that unique language.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
ACTIVITY COMMITTEE
By Vicki Keener
January 31, 2021 seems far away, but something exciting
will happen that afternoon and your Activity Committee
wants you to know what's coming, with the hope that
after this long siege with the pandemic, we can look
forward to the event.
We all want COVID-19 to be over, so we can return to
some type of normalcy, but if it isn't, precautions have
been put in place to protect all those who attend, so we
can enjoy some well-deserved entertainment.
It's the Jerry and Judy Show. They've been here
before and were thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.
They will perform back-to-back performances so we can
limit the number of people who attend each performance.
If it's still necessary, we will require masks and social
distancing. The show will take place in the Fiesta Room.
The first show will be from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. The
second show will start at 3:00 p.m. and end an hour later.
There will be more details as the time approaches.
ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMITTEE
By Jim Conley, Co-Chair
Some hints on how to make submitting a property
improvement request easier on you and ARC. Using
these assures you of quick and easy passage.
Painting your house, look around if you see the color
combination you like, take a picture and submit it with
color numbers and swatches. The same goes with a wall,
patio covering, landscaping ideas, etc. Use a Model
Floor Plan of your home when submitting. They make it
easier to understand the changes. The more supportive
information you give the better the chance of quick
passing.
ARC is currently looking for a new member. If you have
been thinking of getting involved, come to one of our
meetings and see what happens.
FINANCE COMMITTEE
As a self-governing community, we are not trying to
make a profit. Our goal is to operate the HOA in an
efficient manner with the twin objectives of operating
efficiently and maintaining the livable value of both the
community assets and our individual homes. In order to
do this, we have three entities directly
Page 9
Continued from previous page
involved with the financial management of the HOA:
The BOD has the final approval of all income and
expenses, and the annual budget; The Preservation of
Reserve Assets (PRAC) determines when assets must
be repaired or replaced; and The Finance Committee
is the bookkeeper and watchdog of the finances. The
total number of paid professionals on all three groups
is zero.
Members of the community volunteer their time and
expertise to make it work. It works only if enough
members come forward and put in the time. The two
committees (PRAC and Finance) both need more
members right now. No experience is necessary:
The current members learned by joining and doing, so
can you. Signup sheets are available online or at the
front desk so please consider filling one out and
return it to the front desk ASAP. Your help is needed
and greatly appreciated.

PROXIMITY CARD AND POOL
RESERVATIONS
PROXIMITY CARD RULES: Rules and
Regulations, Rev. E. states that Proximity cards are
valid only for the persons to whom they are issued
and cannot be loaned, transferred, or assigned. In
order to use the pool, fitness, or any other areas, a
proximity card must also be processed at the
electronic entry point at each facility.
There have been several incidents in which residents
are scanning their assigned proximity card and then
allowing other residents into the pool. Please ensure
that you are using your individually-assigned
proximity card when you scan in to use the facilities.
Residents must each scan in individually (even if
you are in the same home). Thank you for your
cooperation.
Please do not enter the pool until your reservation
time starts (no early birds) and please exit promptly
when your reservation time is over. If you leave late,
you are delaying the time for the next group of
residents who have reservations. It is also incredibly
important that our maintenance staff has adequate
time to clean and disinfect all areas.

SMOKE DETECTOR TIME
By Del Gustin
Friday, November 6th is the date
scheduled to have your smoke
detector or its batteries replaced if
service is due. Your Sunflower
neighbors who are sponsored by Northwest Fire,
provide this twice-yearly service for those residents
who are unable to maintain their smoke detectors
themselves. Therefore, if your batteries haven’t been
replaced in the last four years or if you wish to
replace all your smoke detectors, please stop at the
front desk to complete a request to change the
batteries (which are provided by the resident) or to
obtain information on purchasing new detectors.
Purchasing identical smoke detectors is required as
team members cannot do new wiring. (We have two
types of specs for detectors used in our homes and
information helping to order new ones at the front
desk. New detectors come with batteries.)
Residents who have completed a request form will be
called prior to November 6th to finalize an
approximate time for service – either morning or
afternoon. Teams will do their best to honor the
requested replacement time.
In providing this service, additional ladder climbers
would be helpful. If interested, please give me a call
at 520-572-0587.

BOCCE
By Ed Alsobrooks
It’s with gratitude and fond memories that the
Sunflower Bocce Club will remember our beloved
President, Marty Rice. After a long battle, Marty
passed on August 14th. We all know of his dedication
to our Club. I’m sure he’s at the “Courts of Gold”
organizing a bocce tournament. Rest in Peace, Marty.
At this writing, the Club is still playing at 8:00 a.m.
We’ve had a steady group of 8-10 players all
summer. As we move forward and the temperatures
drop, we will move back to our 1:00 p.m. winter
schedule. Ed Schaefer and I will keep you posted as
to the change.
We hope it will be soon when we begin to see our
snowbird members’ faces around the courts. Let the
chatting, laughing and sharing of summer adventures
begin.
If you’re new to Sunflower or you’ve wondered about
the game of bocce, come on out and see us. We play
on Tuesday and Thursday at 8:00 a.m. in the warmer
months. (1:00 p.m. September to May) We’d love
to meet you. We’ll teach you the game basics in one
session and introduce you to some fun and friendly
folks from your neighborhood. If you decide to join
the Club, dues are a mere $5 a year. Hope to see you
out there.
If, at any time, you have questions about bocce or the
Sunflower Bocce Club, contact either Ed Schaefer
520-668-8630 or Ed Alsobrooks 520-638-5703.

Billiards play by reservations only:

Men’s: Tuesdays and Fridays

SUNFLOWER MEN’S GOLF CLUB
By Don Sanderson
Lots of great golf this summer. We even got to play
some of the resort courses at a reduced price. It
might have gotten a little “toasty,” but if you drank
plenty of water, it was bearable.
We are currently composing our fall/winter schedule.
To view our upcoming events, go to our website at
sunflower.golfclub.net.
Congratulation to Ron Newhouse. Ron aced the 8th
hole at Quarry Pines on September 7th.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with our club,
we play twice a week (Monday & Thursday) at
various golf courses in the area (all the way from
Benson on the east to Tubac on the south to Casa
Grande on the north). If you enjoy the game and are
looking to make some great friends, come join us. I
can be contacted at [email protected] or
520-241-7676.

ACTIVITES & CLUBS
CRAFT CLUB
By Jeanne M Collins
The Craft Club has been on hiatus for the summer
months. We normally would resume meeting in
October, but because of the virus it’s unknon at this
time when we will start up again.
We might be on a break but are always on the lookout
for new craft ideas. If you come across a project that
you think we might enjoy, bring it to our attention.
We welcome everyone interested in learning a new
craft. The Craft Club meets every Monday from
10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. If you wish to join us, the
annual fee is $5.00.
I hope everyone stays safe.
SUNFLOWER GENEALOGY SOCIETY By Arnold Mabile
The Tuesday, October 20th SGS Zoom session will
begin at 2:00 p.m. and feature a presentation by Dr.
Melanie Sturgeon, entitled “Skeletons in the Closet.”
It’s a great topic given that October is Halloween
month. Untold numbers of genealogists may have
struggled with the question of how to handle relatives
they would rather not have in their family tree. This
session will give you hints as to how you might
artfully handle the inclusion of such unsavory family
members in your genealogy work. As, ideally, we
would not want to hold out important information that
enriches our family stories.
Dr. Sturgeon has a Ph.D. in history and has taught
family history classes for a number of years. She
works closely with Arizona State and local
government agencies to identify and preserve their
permanent/historical records. She has been a board
member of the National Association of Government
Archives and Records Administrators and, among
many kudos she has received, she was presented a
lifetime achievement award from the Conference of
Inter-Mountain Archivists in 2015. She is well
prepared to share ideas around opening up
genealogical closets and transforming the skeletons
inside into a valuable contribution to completing your
family story.

BINGO
By Rosie Kubiak
Rosie sends her love, but it appears there will be too
many restrictions in place yet in October to hold a
proper BINGO. We will notify everyone with the
Sunflower Communicator if that changes. We are
looking forward to getting together to roll that cage
once again!

SUNFLOWER SOCIAL CLUB
By Frances Gauthier
In normal times, this is the month that we would be
asking people to consider running for an officer
position for the coming year. We have our annual
Election of Officers in November. However, due to
the current circumstances, we will hold off until we
are able to meet again.
SUNFLOWER COMMUNITY
VETERANS CLUB
By Richard Long
The first Veterans Club monthly meeting since March
was held via Zoom on September 2nd. It was
attended by about 20 members and was well received.

future funding for both the VA and the Department of
Defense. Our October 7th meeting will also be on
Zoom. Nicole Contreras, administrator for Arizona
Veterans Memorial Cemetery, will be our featured
speaker.
Mark your calendars for our Annual Fundraising
BBQ lunch. It will be November 18th and will be a
takeout meal served from the patio. The menu will be
pulled BBQ pork and beef (each $12 ticket will get 2
sandwiches with meat of your choice). Also included
are coleslaw, baked beans, potato chips, and dessert.
Tickets are currently available for purchase online.
You will also be able to buy tickets on the patio later
in October. Those ticket sale dates are yet to be
determined. Checks will be the preferred method of
payment.
To buy BBQ tickets online right now, or to make a
donation to the Veterans Club, go to
sunflowerliving.com, then click on Resident
Information. Scroll down to Clubs/Groups. The list
is alphabetical. Click Veterans Web page. Enter the
amount and then fill out the form. You can pay using
PayPal or credit card.
To buy your tickets early by mail, send check payable
to “Veterans Club” to Carol Taylor. Her address is in
the directory and last month’s newsletter.
