Article 1 - Scheduled for Globe 05/06/2010 2nd Annual Free Sunshine Benefit Show for Alzheimer's Association

Saturday, June 19, 2010, Sunshine Performance Club will offer its 2nd Annual Musical Variety Show benefiting Alzheimer’s Association of Orange County (AAOC). Performances are scheduled for afternoon (2 p.m.) and evening (7 p.m.) in the Clubhouse 3 auditorium. The Alzheimer’s Association Club of Laguna Woods Village will be presenting the show.

Performances will feature instrumentals, vocal solos, duets, trios, quartets and tap dancing; music will include selections from the great Broadway shows, country songs, opera and old favorites. New to the group are two guitarists, Matt Link and Vern Smith. Matt was trained in classical guitar and has played for many years. He works full-time in the computer field. Vern, a retired mechanical engineer, is also a long-time guitarist. He invented a “hands free” mechanism for harmonicas that allows playing all notes without pushing a button to produce them. This allows him to play the harmonica and guitar simultaneously. Vern has performed classical harmonica pieces with the Laguna Woods Symphony Orchestra and plays with the Village String Band. This Saturday, May 8th, he will be singing and playing along with several other Sunshine performers in the Village String Band show in the Clubhouse 3 auditorium.

Admission to the June 19th musical variety benefit show will be free with ticket. Seating is limited, first come, first served. Tickets for both the 2pm matinee and the 7pm evening show will be available at the Clubhouse 3 box office beginning Thursday, June 3rd.Tickets may also be obtained prior to June 3rd from any member of the Sunshine Performance Club. 2nd Annual Free Sunshine Benefit Show for Alzheimer’s Association Saturday, June 19, 2010, Sunshine Performance Club will offer its 2nd Annual Musical Variety Show benefiting Alzheimer’s Association of Orange County (AAOC). Performances are scheduled for afternoon (2 p.m.) and evening (7 p.m.) in the Clubhouse 3 auditorium. The Alzheimer’s Association Club of Laguna Woods Village will be

presenting the show. The Alzheimer’s Club has just been created in response to the prevalence of the disease in senior communities.

Performances will feature instrumentals, vocal solos, duets, trios, quartets and tap dancing; music will include selections from the great Broadway shows, country songs, opera and old favorites.

The pianists for the event are Beverly Dumas, Marlene Carr and Terri “Sunshine” Lutey. Beverly, a free lance writer and editor, enjoys playing piano and singing. Marlene, who is new to the Sunshine group, is president of the Music Lovers Club and plays the bass viol with the Laguna Woods Symphony Orchestra. She taught music and directed choirs for fifty years in Connecticut where she also provided piano lessons and worked as a church organist. In addition to her piano accompaniment for the Sunshine event, she will sing harmony in several vocal ensembles. Sunshine directs the show and in addition to piano accompaniment, will sing and play the electronic saxophone.

David Hartman will again be the master of ceremonies and will sing solos and participate in vocal ensembles. David is a former New York attorney, having also served as a Special Assistant Attorney General for the state of New York. He acted in Off-Broadway plays and performed on radio and television.

evening (7 p.m.) in the Clubhouse 3 auditorium. The Alzheimer’s Association Club of Laguna Woods Village will be presenting the show. Performances will feature instrumentals, vocal solos, duets, trios, quartets and tap dancing; music will include selections from the great Broadway shows, country songs, opera and old favorites. The “Basses Loaded” group features 5 sailors who will be performing “There Is Nothin’ Like A Dame” from the Broadway musical “South Pacific.” Allan Couzens, David Hartman, Hugh Nestor, Chuck Pereau and Ed Hayes are the “5 Sailors.” Ed Hayes, a long time “Sunshiner” who was on medical leave during the group’s last two benefits is back and is happy to be singing again. Ed is the multiple-voice man who loves doing impersonations of such personalities as Dean Martin, Johnny Cash, and Al Jolson. He is also a member of the “Theatre Guild” and “Old Pros” and acts in plays for both groups. Chuck Pereau will also sing a tenor aria from Puccini’s “Tosca” as well as some old-time favorites and will play ukulele. Chuck also sings with other organizations within and outside the village. Hugh Nestor is a retired physician whose hobby is music. He plays the mandolin, fiddle, ukulele and harmonica and is a vocalist. He plays in a Traditional Music string band for Civil War reenactments and in a classical mandolin group. David Hartman, the group’s MC, will sing and play the harmonica. Allan Couzens will vocalize in several ensembles and will play the saxophone; Allan also plays ukulele. Admission to the June 19th musical variety benefit show will be free with ticket. Saturday, June 19, 2010, Sunshine Performance Club will offer its 2nd Annual Musical Variety Show benefiting Alzheimer’s Association of Orange County (AAOC). Performances are scheduled for afternoon (2 p.m.) and evening (7 p.m.) in the Clubhouse 3 auditorium. The Alzheimer’s Association Club of Laguna Woods Village, a newly formed club, will be presenting the show.

Performances in the June 19th benefit show will feature instrumentals, vocal solos, duets, trios, quartets and tap dancing; music will include selections from the great Broadway shows, country songs, opera and old favorites.

Allan Couzens and Judy Hintgen, who are also vocalists, play the saxophone and clarinet respectively in most of the musical numbers. Allan also performs with the ViIlage String Band and several other groups. Every other week, he plays dance music with the Ragtimers at the Irvine Senior Center. Judy discovered her love for music while performing in her 1st grade Christmas pageant and music still remains the love of her life, along with her husband and family. Judy performs as a clarinetist with the Laguna Community Concert Band. Sunshine (Terri Lutey), the group’s musical director,will play the electronic horn in additional to singing favorite songs both solo and in ensembles. Before re-discovering music and retiring, Sunshine’s career was in computer programming and business systems design.

2nd Annual Free Sunshine Benefit Show for Alzheimer’s Association

Saturday, June 19, 2010, Sunshine Performance Club will offer its 2nd Annual Musical Variety Show benefiting Alzheimer’s Association of Orange County (AAOC). Performances are scheduled for afternoon (2 p.m.) and evening (7 p.m.) in the Clubhouse 3 auditorium. The Alzheimer’s Association Club of Laguna Woods Village will be presenting the show.

Performances will feature instrumentals, vocal solos, duets, trios, quartets and tap dancing; music will include selections from the great Broadway shows, country songs, opera and old favorites.

Frank Buchanan, who celebrated his 98th birthday this year, enjoys playing the drum and singing old time favorites and is thrilled to still be performing; Frank is also noted as a former world class bowler. He has fond memories of helping to start several clubs in the village. Eve Gilys Link, a new “Sunshiner,” is a California native who grew up listening to her father play piano, mandolin, accordion and the melodica. In her early years, Eve studied music and performed in chorus for various organizations. As an adult her career was in computers. She now is studying music again and will use her rhythm talents on various percussion instruments in the upcoming show. Art Yanes, a long-time “Sunshiner,” enjoys music and plays bass guitar and ukulele with several groups; he will play both instruments in the Sunshine show.

2nd Annual Free Sunshine Benefit Show for Alzheimer’s Association Saturday, June 19, 2010, Sunshine Performance Club will offer its 2nd Annual Musical Variety Show benefiting Alzheimer’s Association of Orange County (AAOC). Performances are scheduled for afternoon (2 p.m.) and evening (7 p.m.) in the Clubhouse 3 auditorium. The Alzheimer’s Association Club of Laguna Woods Village will be presenting the show.

Performances will feature instrumentals, vocal solos, duets, trios, quartets and tap dancing; music will include selections from the great Broadway shows, country songs, opera and old favorites.

Four tap dancers from the “Rhapsody In Rhythm,” group will dance in the show. Betty Hutchinsonhas been dancing since age fourteen, (tap, toe, ballet, baton) in addition to studying piano. While she married and raised her family, some of her outside activities waned, but she remained faithful to her tap dancing and piano, continuing her growth as a pianist and as a tap dancer at Irvine Valley and Coastline colleges. Born in Brighton, England, Irene Sellers was hired by Ice Capades where she skated and danced for five years. She arrived in the United States via the Queen Mary in 1958. She subsequently continued to dance at Disneyland. She is passionate about dancing and loves performing in community charity events. Suzanne Wyman, a Laguna Woods Village resident, began dance classes at age three after spontaneously joining a group of dancers on stage. She continued with 15 years of ballet studies, then, taught dance and raised a family. In addition to dancing, she choreographs tap routines. Toni Olivera, a native Californian, began tap dancing at age eight and ballroom dancing at age 12, teaching both types of dance as an adult. For 21 years, she has danced both tap and ballroom at various venues in Irvine, Laguna Woods, Disneyland and the Orange Country Fair. At 70 years young, she says “Dancing keeps one young and healthy.”

2nd Annual Free Sunshine Benefit Show for Alzheimer’s Association

This Saturday, June 19, 2010, Sunshine Performance Club will offer its 2nd Annual Musical Variety Show benefiting Alzheimer’s Association of Orange County (AAOC). Performances are scheduled for afternoon (2 p.m.) and evening (7 p.m.) in the Clubhouse 3 auditorium. The Alzheimer’s Association Club of Laguna Woods Village will be presenting the show. The first meeting of The Alzheimer’s Association Club of Laguna Woods Village will be on June 25th in Clubhouse 3, Dining Room 1 from 10:30am to noon. All village residents with an interest in Alzheimer’s disease and the available help for those afflicted are urged to attend.

Admission to Saturday’s musical variety benefit show will be free with ticket. Seating is limited, first come, first served.
