The Supply Chain Management Award honors companies that have optimized their supply chains consistently or notably. For the 11th time now, the focus is on unique ideas and outstanding supply chain managers. The Supply Chain Management Award 2016 finalists describe, what is possible today when you go the extra mile, pool your talent, and adopt an end-to-end strategy in your supply chain. The presentations by managers and decision- makers from the competing companies in the Finalists Forum offer insights into best practices that truly live up to the name: They have proven to be the best in practice.

We need to network – ideally in all directions. Create crowd solutions, promote disruptive ideas. We must share information – quickly and across cultural and continental divides. Integrate our suppliers, create an atmosphere of mutual trust. And all that in compliance with the clear rules of law and order in Germany in a manner that will stand up in an audit. Every step is documented. Do we risk leaving behind Generation Y – the start-ups and innovators in the supply chain network? What is the right middle course that we supply chainers should pursue?

Do we have any chance of developing sound strategies for a world of such growing complexity if we work alone? Not likely! This insight – though hard to swallow – has been accepted. But do we already have streamlined processes in place to share the information we consider important when interfacing with our partners? Why should we be better equipped to deal with this tomorrow?

A top issue for us as supply chainers und therewith a topic at EXCHAiNGE 2016.

What is the new Silk Road? How does it change the global Supply Chains?Willy LinMember of the Hong Kong Logistics Development Council, Managing Director of Milo’s Knitwear (International) Ltd and Milo’s Manufacturing Co Ltd

In 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping gave a speech in Kazakhstan on the “One Belt, One Road” initiative to establish a modern-day Silk Road. One of China’s objectives with the project is greater partnership with Eurasian countries, says Xi. The effort aims to bring together 65 countries and 4.4 billion people by developing road and rail connections between China and Western Europe and a maritime route with a network of deepwater ports extending from China to East Africa and all the way to the North Sea. Several trains a week already connect Duisburg in Germany to cities in China, for example.

How is the project coming along? What are the goals and challenges? How might this impact global supply chains? These and many more questions will be addressed in the panel discus-sion featuring distinguished scholars, logistics service providers, and industry representatives from China, Hong Kong, and Germany.

We’ve been optimizing the flow of goods and information for decades – at great effort, but with excellent results. So why is the third pillar of supply chain management – managing the flow of capital – still not on the agenda of SCM decision-makers? Why are the billions of euros lying dormant each year in the supply chain not put to better use? How can we leverage potential funding tools and the opportunities they present to our advantage? How can we master the flow of money in the supply chain, today and in the future?
