A white start
for 2014GAYLORD — Nancy Wind wants to stay at the
“head of the class” when it comes to offering her
students and her fellow teachers up-to-date edu-
cational tools and information.
“I know what’s out there enough to help other
teachers and students have access to it and learn
it,” said Wind, a third-grade teacher at St. Mary Ca-
thedral School.
Wind said St. Mary ramped up the use of com-
puters in the classroom three years ago when she
applied for and received a grant from Archbishop
Bernard Hebda. At the time, Hebda, former bishop
of the Diocese of Gaylord, was awarding two sets
of Netbooks to two schools in the diocese.
“He wanted teachers who had been using tech-
nology and would continue to use it and share
with others,” Wind said.

GAYLORD — Gusty winds snuffed the midnight
launch of sky lanterns, but downtown Gaylord’s
New Year’s Eve party was otherwise a hit for those
who braved the cold to celebrate.
The inaugural event had revelers stopping at six
participating businesses throughout the night to
have their “passports” stamped. Each business had
its own national theme and a fully stamped pass-
port earned its holder a shot at prizes.
Candi Edwards, owner of the Old Spud Ware-
house, was among those who got all six stamps.
“There was a good vibe in all of downtown and
groups of people out enjoying each others’ com-
pany,” she said.
Paul Kogelschatz, a relative newcomer to
Gaylord, also made the rounds with a group of
friends.
“It was a fun way to get out and see what local
establishments had to offer,” he said.

NEW YEAR’S SKIERS found no shortage of snow on the slopes at Treetops Resort. Already about 98 inches of snow has
fallen. The snowy season may annoy area homeowners and motorists but it has had a profound impact on the area’s winter
economy. Ski season is off to a great start at Treetops Resort, where many families have hit the slopes during the holiday weeks.
“It is definitely a fantastic start to the season,” said Kevin McKinley, Treetops director of golf and ski operations. McKinley said
the resort had all of its runs and lifts open Dec. 20, well ahead of typical schedule. Treetops is hoping the momentum carries
over into the rest of season, which this year Treetops is opening its slopes seven days a week. “We want to be a ski resort that
doesn’t shut its doors,” McKinley said. “We want to be open and available.”
GAYLORD — The winner of the Gaylord Herald
Times First Baby of 2014 contest arrived at 10 a.m.
New Year’s Day at Otsego Memorial Hospital, 825
N. Center Ave.
Erin Nicole Hughes weighed 7 pounds, 14
ounces and was 19 3/4 inches in length. She is
the daughter of Kristin Lauer and Alex Hughes of
Gaylord.
Possibly, the most excited member of the family
is Erin’s big brother, George, 6, who is a first-grader
at St. Mary Cathedral School.
“He has been asking for a baby for years,” Kris-
tin said. “Every birthday or Christmas he asked.
When we told him he’d be getting a baby around
Christmas, he said, ‘I must have been a very good
boy.’ Now he’s asking for a puppy.”
