The Tallwood Tradition
Greetings Fellow Tallwood Men’s Club Members,
It has been a busy past couple of months. I would
have to say that rain has been the subject of
conversation Way Too Often! Our beloved Tallwood
has been getting hit pretty hard from Mother Nature
this summer. Hopefully we can get some drier days to
get things dried out and allow for repairs to get
attended to.
August had the Social and Tournament committees
working hard and putting on a couple of my favorite
events – Member + Member with the Friday Calcutta
and the 2 Ball Open – AKA the Rib open or BBQ
open. While the Member + Member was cut to 1 day,
yes due to rain, it is still a great event! I would like to
extend kudos and thanks to both Committees on great
events.
Looking ahead we still have plenty of events
remaining. We will continue to send email BLAST
notices to help keep all informed of the Goings On.
The Fall Membership Meeting will be held on
September 24th at Tallwood @ 7:00 pm. It’s an
opportunity to meet with Management, the Pro Shop
and the current board. We will also vote for the 2019
TMC board. Please look for the BLAST with all the
details.

Membership
Please welcome back Returning Member Ryan Nowobilski. Ryan snuck in just under the wire to play
in the Parent – Child with John.
The Board has again approved a proposal to waive the membership fee for the balance of 2018 for new
members who join after the Two-Ball Open. That’s Free Membership! After the Two-Ball Open, the
fee to join the best Men’s Club in the state will be waived (that’s $ 0.00!) or only $30.00 if the New
Member needs to activate a new GHIN account. Many members have friends who have considered
joining or are thinking about “next year”. Why not convince him to join for free for the balance of the
2018 season and come back as a returning member next year? We certainly have a long way to go in
our 2018 schedule of events.
Gentlemen – If you have a friend, relative or colleague, who may be interested in joining the best
Men’s Club in the state, please refer him to the web site to apply for membership or e-mail me at the
address below and I will work with him to complete the application process.

Social
The social calendar is more than half way through seems like yesterday we were planning the Kick Off
event. We have enjoyed great participation this season in all events and record breaking attendance in
Scotch Ball 1. Hopefully when reading this the Two Ball Open will have been completed and Co-Social
Gary “Sandbagger” Greenwald and Dave “Whitey” Wolanin will have defended their title. Hope to see
as many of our fellow club members and guests at our remaining events - Scotch Ball 2, Turkey Classic
and End of Year.

In September at the Fall Meeting we will be voting in the new Men’s Club Board of Directors. Every
position in the Board is up for election. As always we ask for and welcome all new comers to the Board.
Fresh ideas and new perspectives are vital to keeping the club vibrant.
The nomination form is on the board outside the Pro Shop.
I also would like to remind all our members that now is the time to submit nominations for the
Distinguished Service Award (DSA). A nomination form with guidelines is on the home page of our
website and included at the bottom of this newsletter. The board will be considering applications in
September so get those nominations in ASAP.
Greens Committee
In late July the committee had a meeting with Superintendent Larry Barrett, in attendance was Frank
McDermott representing ownership, also Eric and Zac from the pro shop. We were able to ask some
questions we thought would be of concern to our members and the following is a recap of the
discussion.
>Question to Larry: Are their plans for improvement to the traps?
Larry: We are aware the traps need to be addressed, there are no concrete plans to do major
improvements to them, we had hoped to add sand but a deeper issue is to make sure the drainage
underneath is functioning properly.
Frank: We were about to undertake installing some new sand but our loader engine seized and is being
repaired right now.

>Question: We noticed the course is missing some drop area signs? Also are there any plans to purchase
cart directional signs to control traffic?
Larry: We had some wood cart signs but they have rotted and have been thrown away, we do need
some cart directional signs in certain spots but I am not aware of any plans to purchase them right now.
Eric: I have purchased some new drop area signs and some ground under repair signs.
>Question to Larry and Frank: Any plans for some cart restriction measures to keep them away from
greens and areas like the right side of the 14th green complex?
Larry: I don’t have any plans to do that kind of work right now.
Frank: I am new to being here all the time but I have observed that this is something that could use
improvement in the future. Carts are definitely being driven in areas where I would not like to see them.
Larry: I would add that push carts can be as damaging as driven carts. It would be better if they stayed
off the teeing areas and green collars. Some traffic control may be helpful for this foot traffic as well as
driven carts.
>Question to Larry: A lot of our members recall when the greens were a lot faster than they are now.
Why are they slower now?
Larry: The speed of the greens changes a lot with the seasons, right now these greens are lush and super
healthy so consequentially they are growing fast and thick. Also all this rain is slowing them down and
at the same time restricting how often I can cut them.
>Question to Larry: What can you do to speed them up?
Larry: If I dry them out I risk burning some areas out. They can be double cut but that would take a
commitment of manpower that I do not have right now.
>Question: Any plans for major improvements on the course?
Larry: I would say that there are areas that are in play that I would like to see improved (like the traps)
before we did any other new projects.
Frank: I agree, the traps would be #1 before anything else.
>Question: If there were new teeing or revamped playing areas could the current sprinkler system be
expanded to cover these new areas?
Larry: The system is old and does require repairs but there is plenty of capacity and we have lots of
water to draw upon, so yes, the system can handle new areas that need to be watered.
>Question: We see a lot of moth damaged trees marked out there, what is going on with that problem?
Frank: This is a major concern and a big project, there are about some 200 trees that are marked. We
are in the process of exploring our options and getting quotes.
Larry: When the work does happen, I would expect it to be done sometime in winter like maybe
January. That way the ground is frozen and we can limit the damage to the course.
In general, this year with all the rain has posed some challenges in course maintenance for Larry and his
crew, but meetings like this one are great to help improve our understanding of how things work around
Tallwood.

What a Great month (well everything but the weather).
I have had the pleasure to help Tallwood grow two amazing junior programs from scratch this summer.
First was our PGA Jr League teams, we had 2 amazing teams that I can’t be proud enough of. I was also
lucky enough to be voted in as our leagues PGA Jr League all-star captain. We took the best players
from our zone and played against the other 14 zones in the state at Lyman Orchards. It is a very similar
set up to Little league baseball. We were lucky enough to make it all the way to the State finals. It came
down to the other team making a 35 footer to top our team for birdie on 17 and our team needing a 2
putt from 40 feet on 18 and not getting it done that lead to a 2nd place finish in the state.

We also had our first Tallwood Jr Summer Club this year. It was a weekly 9-hole tournament for our
juniors to come a play and have a blast with each other throughout the summer. It was concluded with a
Junior Club Championship. On August 15th we had our club championship. It had two divisions, the
Championship division from the Red tees and the Arnold Palmer division from our forward tees.
Our inaugural 2018 champions were;
Luke Stennett - 68
Stephen Crouse – 78

What a fantastic PGA Championship… I was very glad to see Brooks slam the door shut to win his 3
major in 7 tries. It was also great to see the Tiger effect in full swing again. Like him or hate him he
moves the needle.
Speaking of Tiger, the Match is on November 23rd in Las Vegas.
TIGER vs PHIL. Black Friday on PPV. I am not a huge fan of the PPV but it just gives us all an excuse
to spend some time with family or friends and watch two of the modern day icons battling it out for a $9
million purse.
It has been a special summer and I am sad that it is almost over. We have seen this course and this club
grow in more ways than I could have imagined. The forward direction is only a good thing. I am so
excited about the future of Tallwood and the Men’s Club.

Congrats to our 2 Ball Open Champions:
Terry Ruzzo – Tom Brett
Cliff Backes – Rich Harris
It was a great day with Little Mark’s BBQ and the weather stayed kind.
Please sign up for the Match Play 2 in the next week. It was my favorite event as a member and is still
my favorite event to this day. It is an amazing way to play with different player and to meet new ones.
