NOTICE FOR AGM

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEMy Fellow Members

The other day my good friend Sia Yong congratulated me on an un-eventful Club year. He said that, given the Club’s recent “turbulent” history, a boring year was not nec-essarily a bad thing and we have to be thankful for small mercies: it was cause for celebration. I concurred. As we toasted Mr Walker (Johnny) our good fortune, I told him that it helped that we have a GC which did not take the GC business too seri-ously; and which approached Club issues with perspective and balance; and whose members were content to settle any differences they may have (and there were very few) over a beer.

What awaits the next GC?

We are branded. We are 147 years old; with a rich history and tradi-tion, going back to 1865. We have excellent sporting and recreational facilities and F&B outlets. We own the land on which the main Club-house and the sports centre stands. We have no borrowings. Our bank balances are healthy. We have loyal, hardworking and committed Man-agement and staff members. And, we have a waiting list of about 1,400 people who are prepared to pay $35,000 each to join us.

In FY2010/11, it costs $24.3 mil-lion (including depreciation of $2.4 million) to run the Club. Our op-erating revenue was $21.3 million. The shortfall was $3 million. We de-pended on the $5.6 million entrance fees from new Members and $345k in investment income to achieve a surplus of almost $3 million. Going forward, we will not have anything near $5.6 million in entrance fees as we cannot offer any more Ordinary memberships because of our Rules. Our entrance fee income will only be from instalment payments of Or-dinary membership fees and Term membership fees. We expect oper-ating costs to rise and unless there are new sources of revenue, like an increase in Members’ monthly sub-scriptions and/or a minimum spend levy, we anticipate the shortfall to grow bigger.

Last month, I referred to the “grey-ing” of the Club and the fact that

about 25% of Members (“25%”) do not come to the Club at all. I sus-pect that there may be an overlap in the composition of older Members and the 25%. I think the 25% may be prepared to give up their mem-berships if the Club makes them a reasonable offer. I am confi dent that, with goodwill, imagination and courage, it may be possible to “unlock” the potential of the 25%. In the process of doing so, we would improve the Club’s fi nances, inject new life and vitality to the Club, and at the same time, cater substan-tially to the demands of Singapore-ans to join the Club.

I think one of our major chal-lenges will be to manage our costs of food, of wages and of goods and services essential to our operations, without lowering the quality of the food we serve our Members and at the level of service they are accus-tomed to. And, at the same time, to offer our Members the full range of amenities, activities, recreations and sports, which are the hallmarks of our Club.

As Members are aware, Ms Clara Tan, our Financial Controller has been overseeing the operations of the Club since 9/11/11. This is in addition to her job as FC. She has discharged her additional duties and responsibilities with distinction. Please join me to thank her for her service to the Club.

Mr Roy Higgs will join us on 9/4/12 as our General Manager. He graduated from the University of Singapore and has an MBA from the University of Strathclyde. He was with Westin Hotels, Raffl es Hotel and served as General Manager of Clarke Quay Festival Village. In ad-dition, he has been General Manag-er of Keppel Club and Tanah Merah Country Club.

We are confi dent that Roy’s back-ground and experience will be inval-uable in our Club, and that he will lead, motivate and mentor Manage-ment and staff members to bring our Club to new heights.

At the AGM we will elect a new GC. If you have some spare time, and a wish to serve your Club, I urge you to stand for elections to GC. Let

us elect the best GC possible.

I thank you for the privilege to serve as your President. I have en-joyed the experience.

GENERAL COMMITTEE 2011/12

Page 5: The Tanglin Club Magazine: April 2012

Dear Members

As we gear towards the Annual Gen-eral Meeting, which is scheduled on 30 April, we do not forget to contin-ue to renew your dining and sport-ing experiences at the Club. For a start, remember to join us at the “Around The World” Club Party on 19 May, so prepare to let down your hair and have fun!

Renovation of Main Clubhouse FaçadeFirst and foremost, I would like to thank you for bearing with us throughout the construction period. The inconvenience caused to many of you - with the noise, dust and traf-fi c re-direction – will be rewarded to you when you see the new canopy, which will provide more shelter and shade at the Main Clubhouse en-trance, very soon.

SportsRecently, the Club hosted the Bowls Singapore National Pairs Tourna-ment 2012 on 3, 4, 10 and 11 March. For four days, we had the privilege of witnessing many national play-ers competing and enjoying their games here.

The Club also hosted the inaugural TANS Games (TANS is an acronym for The Tanglin Club, American Club, National University of Singa-pore Society and Singapore Swim-ming Club). Members from these four clubs competed in sports like Billiards, Bowling, Golf, Table Ten-nis, Tennis and Squash, building a good camaraderie amongst them-selves. New friendships were forged and existing friendships strength-ened. The fi nal Gala Dinner for the presentation of the Challenge Tro-phy was held in the Churchill Room on 31 March for a total of more than 200 Members and guests. I would like to convey my appreciation to the S&R Manager, Christine, and her team of staff for working extra hard in organising and coordinating the Games.

For the month of April, you can expect eventful new activities lined up for you, which include:

• A talk on cleansing and rejuvenat-ing your health on 11 April

• A one-day ride to Pengerang, Johor Bahru, Malaysia on 21 April

• The Annual Tennis Championship

• The John Wilks Snooker Competition

Food & BeverageI have received much positive feed-back on the Irish promotion, which was held at the Tavern between 5 and 18 March. The management will continue to work closely with the F&B Sub-Committee to bring you good food. Don’t forget to try the selection of vegetarian dishes too, introduced since Feb 2012 at the Tavern and Wheelhouse. In April, delight your taste buds with the Raclette and special Swiss pasta during the Club’s Swiss Promotion, which will be made available from 9 to 22 April, and end your gastro-nomic adventure with April’s Cake of the Month – Opera Cake. Two of the Saturday nights in April at the Churchill Room will be set aside for Social Dancing, whereby a buffet will also be served, and all Members are welcome to have your dinner here, whether you join in the dance or not.

JackpotThe Jackpot Room’s operating hours had been changed to 10am to 11pm daily, as part of the compliance with the Singapore Police Force Licenc-ing Division’s Lottery Permit condi-tions. For your added enjoyment, I have made a slight change to the lunch and dinner menus, which I hope will enhance your enjoyment of the food there.

Meanwhile, look forward to two new game machines coming your way within the next couple of months.

StaffThe Star Employee of the Month of February was awarded to Ms Linda Ren of the Housekeep-ing depart-ment. Linda, who hails from Jilin, China, joined The Tanglin Club in December 2010. She has shown great improvement in her spoken

English, and has displayed a very good working attitude during the past year with the Club. Congratu-lations, Linda!

In March 2012, the Club bade fare-well to our former F&B Manager, Mr Ramani Shanmugam. A few elderly staff, with the oldest being 83 year-old Uncle Seng, have also retired. Uncle Seng, a familiar face at the Churchill Room bar, had been work-ing at the Club since 1961. However, do be informed that the Club has of-fered them part-time work with the Club. At this point, I would like to express the management’s heartfelt thanks to the loyalty and dedicated services they have given to Club Members throughout their years of service with the Club.

On 9 April 2012, the Club warmly welcomes Mr Roy Higgs, our new General Manager. Mr Higgs has vast experience with various golf and country clubs, as well as in the hos-pitality industry, and he will lead our management team to excel fur-ther.

Last but not least, I thank the Gen-eral Committee, especially the Presi-dent, Mr Sim, and Honorary Treas-urer, Mr Troy, for their guidance and valuable advice. And I thank all Members for the support and feed-back given to me for the past fi ve months. I shall continue to work closely with the General Commit-tee, Mr Higgs and fellow Heads-of-Department to bring you continued enjoyment.

Best Regards,

Clara TanFinancial Controller

‘Thank You’ Cocktail for the Sub-Committees and Sections19 MarchIt was an evening for old friends to meet again, as well as new friendships being forged, as the Mem-bers of the various Sub-Committees, Sports Sec-tions, and the General Committee celebrated a suc-cessful year of overseeing the various components and activities of the Club, in a cocktail event at the Churchill Room.

The President, Mr Sim Yong Chan, gave a speech, thanking all the Members who volunteered their time and resources to support their individual Sub-Committee and Sections, and commending their passion in keeping the traditions of the Club alive. The guest-of-honour, His Excellency, Dr Anacleto Fe-licani, the Ambassador of Italy to Singapore and an Honorary Member, gave a speech as well, and praised the high standards of service and excellent facilities of the Club. His Excellency had previously presented to the Club several Italian military-themed plaques, which have been installed in the Raffl es Room.

The Annual Staff Dinner & Dance 2012On 20 February 2012, the Grand Ballroom of the Hotel InterContinental was transformed into a scene of a school, with many ‘students’ dressed in school uniform, reliving the ‘good old school days’ when life seemed simpler, especially with little pleasures, such as the familiar colourful paper balls that came with snacks, the game of tikam-tikam (a game of chance), kuti-kuti (a traditional children’s game), the ubiquitous Ding Ding white can-dy, and other very familiar local items.

It was a time to celebrate for all in-house and contract staff, in appreciation of their hard work rendered in the year 2011. It was also a night of recognition and acknowledgement to our loyal staff, who received their long-service awards for continuous service in the Club, ranging from 10 to 40 years!

The opening highlight was a dance perform-ance put up by 10 members of staff of the Dinner & Dance Organising Committee. Their dance brought about much praise for their ‘courage’ and showmanship, since the majority of them were performing in front of a crowd for the fi rst time, and a large crowd at that – 220 of their fellow colleagues and

some Members of the General Committee (GC). Well done to the team for being such good sports about it!

Throughout the night, staff and GC Mem-bers savoured the sumptuous buffet spread of local delights, and they truly let their hair down to engage themselves in a series of fun-fi lled team building games. For the fi rst time in the history of the Staff D&Ds, the staff were so busy participating in games that they only managed to consume 3.5 bar-rels of beer instead of the usual 6 barrels! No doubt many went home satisfi ed, but sober!

A big thank-you goes to our sponsors for their generous contributions towards the An-nual Staff Dinner & Dance party. Each and every member of the staff went home with a lucky draw prize!

Last, but not least, a big thank you also goes to the Organising Committee, comprised of Mr Lincoln Lowe (Security Manager), Mrs Mary Lee (Executive Housekeeper), Ms Tina Supri (Events Manager), Mr Abdul Aziz (Gym Manager), Ms Julie Goh (Executive Secre-tary), Mr Indika Fernando (M&E Executive), Ms Annie Ng (Human Resource Executive), Mrs Savitri Devi (Human Resource Execu-tive), and Mrs Suseela Devi (Culinary Assist-ant), for their time and effort to make this event a great success.

19BOOK & DVDS

DVD ReviewThe Rum Diary starring Johnny Depp and Aaron Eckhart Journalist Paul Kemp (Depp), tired of the noise and madness of New York and the conventions

of late Eisenhower-era America, travels to Puerto Rico to write for a local newspaper. Adopting the rum-soaked life of the island, Paul is soon presented with a choice: to use his words to promote a local corrupt businessman, or to take him down.

11.22.63by Stephen KingWhat if you could go back in time and change the course of history? What if the watershed moment you could change was the JFK assassination? 11.22.63, the date that Kennedy was shot - unless . . . King takes his protagonist Jake Epping, a high- school English teacher from Lisbon Falls, Maine, 2011, on a fascinating journey back to 1958: from a world of mobile

phones and iPods to a new world of Elvis and JFK, of Plymouth Fury cars and Lindy Hopping, of a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald, and a beautiful high school librarian named Sadie Dunhill, who becomes the love of Jake’s life - a life that transgresses all the normal rules of time. With extraordinary imaginative power, King weaves the social, political and popular culture of his baby-boom American generation into a devastating exercise in escalating suspense.

Book Review Money and Power: How Goldman Sachs Came To Rule the World by William D. CohanWhen, in late 2008, the dust finally started to settle on one of the worst financial crises in history, only one Wall Street institution still stood virtually unassailed: - Goldman Sachs. Why did Goldman survive, and even flourish, when so many of its peers were collapsing around them? Were the Goldman professionals simply the ‘smartest guys in the room’, the elite of the elite? Or was there more at work than simply the magic of ‘The Goldman

Way’? In Money and Power William D. Cohan peers behind the curtain to give us the inside story of why Goldman is so profitable, and so powerful. Cohan is the first author to chronicle and to interview the leaders of Goldman Sachs since the 2008 crash, and who has gained unprecedented access to the firm’s inner circle. Every living former chief executive of Goldman Sachs has spoken to him, as well as its current chairman and CEO, Lloyd Blankfein. Money and Power is the most penetrating study yet of these larger-than-life characters and their secretive world: the definitive account of an institution whose public claims of virtue look very much like ruthlessness when exposed to the light of day.

WELLNESS22

Dermatologists and skin aestheticians may not al-ways see eye to eye on what’s best for skin. But they all agree on this: our emotional wellbeing

relates directly to our skin, and how we feel on the inside affects how we look on the outside.

It is a fact that stress can cause acne fl are-ups and worsen chronic skin conditions such as psoriasis. This is because stress increases neuropeptides: the stress chemi-cals released from our nerve endings. Compounding this problem is that people under stress also tend to neglect their skin, lacking the energy or motivation to keep to their skincare routines, or adopting skin unfriendly hab-its such as scratching or picking at their trouble spots.

Then there is a different kind of stress: not one related to worry or a hectic lifestyle. This stress relates to ex-ternal factors, also known as oxidative stress. To put it simply, oxidative stress is the body’s inability to detoxify quickly enough against external factors such as pollu-tion, sunlight and smoke, all of which trigger the pro-duction of free radicals. Oxidative stress causes sagging and wrinkled skin. Over time, increased stress causes col-lagen fi bres to break down, leaving the skin with visible signs of ageing.

As prevention is better than cure, here are ways to over-come stress that causes ageing and other skin problems:

1. Find your own way to de-stress. No single method works for everyone or in every situation, so experiment with different techniques and strategies. Focus on what makes you feel calm and in control.

2. Practise a healthy lifestyle: Exercise regularly, fol-low a healthy diet, avoid addictive behaviour whether it’s checking your Blackberry every minute of the day or needing alcohol or cigarettes to get through the day. Also very important: get enough rest and sleep.

3. Stay away from oxidative stress: Avoid polluted ar-eas, protect yourself against the sun and don’t smoke or expose yourself to smoke.

4. Use the right products for your skin. Some sugges-tions from Spa Botanica are:

• Spa Botanica Nourishing Cream, which has been sci-entifi cally formulated to combat signs of ageing by reju-venating collagen development and protecting the skin against oxidative stress.

• Spa Botanica Everyday Skin Care range, which is free from sulphates, petroleum derivatives, parabens, artifi -cial colouring and synthetic fragrances.

It was a splendid evening of el-egance, good entertainment and glamour at the Bridge Gala Din-

ner on 11th February hosted by the Bridge Section of the Tanglin Club.

The Churchill Room looked stun-ning. The decor, table settings with the beautiful fl oral centre-pieces and lit candles enhanced by the chandeliers, created an ambience of grandeur befi tting a “ Gala Event “

Observing the 117 arrivals for the evening was like watching the “Stars” on the “Red Carpet”. The ladies sparkled in their evening outfi ts and the gentlemen compli-mented them by looking so dapper in their suits. Had there been a “Best Dressed “ competition for the ladies we would have been hard-pressed to select a winner.

Every big event has a Master of Ceremonies and Benedict Goh, a well known personality and veteran in the business did not disappoint. Entertainment was provided by guest artists Lotus Soh and Rob Col-lins accompanied by our resident band the “Face Facts” who seemed all fi red-up playing for them. Judg-ing from the reaction of everyone present, singers and band were very well received.

Rob, the fi rst to sing, aptly start-

ed off his repertoire of songs with “What a wonderful world” a Louis Armstrong classic hit, that has stirred so many people , in thoughts and feelings. For some action and fun, the professional Filipino dance trio, Don Don Meras, Livan and Jack Gayo demonstrated their sassy dance moves to the music and lyr-ics of “Kiss me honey, honey kiss me” and “Heh big spender” to the delight of the ladies.

From the start of cocktails to a de-licious four course set dinner , fol-lowed by entertainment, lucky draw prizes and all that dancing, the evening was a very enjoyable one for all who attended.

Our thanks to our sponsors Chop-ard, Billion Venture , Estee Lauder, Renee L and Salon Le Jardin for their fabulous prizes and generous door gifts.

Special credit and acknowledge-ment have to be given to the de-partments that assisted the Bridge organizing Committee in the plan-ning and execution of this very suc-cessful event. Our sincere thanks to Christine Koh (Sports and Rec-reation ), Letchumi Koolu and Chef Louis Tay (Food and Beverage ), Ad-nan Abdullah (Restaurant Manger) Alvin Teu, (Marketing/Communi-

cations) and their staff for making this, a Gala Dinner at The Tanglin Club, that shall be long remembered by many.

My last SayThis is my fi nal article for the Bridge Section. My sole objective almost a year ago, when I signed up for the portfolio of Communications/Mag-azine, was the determination to give the Bridge Section the kind of visi-bility it so rightly deserves. Hopeful-ly, this goal has been achieved. Eve-ry well established and well known club around the world has a high-profi le, active Bridge Section and The Tanglin Club is no exception. I hope that you have enjoyed reading my articles as much as I have en-joyed writing for you and now, it is time to pass on “the baton“.

Happy Bridging All!

For our Section, we continue to attract more new Members, as per our Convenor’s aim to have 100 Section Members by the end of the year.

Janet is one of the new additions, and after some coaching from M.C. Cheong, she found the game very exciting, and now she is always at the Club to practice the new game she has learnt. Last week, to her surprise she landed one of her darts on the bull’s-eye and she was very excited about her achievement: so she immediately requested M.C. to take a photograph of her so that she can show it to her family.

Our Saturday darts competition on 10 March attracted many participants. Eunice, who loves the game, never misses such an opportunity when she is in town, and in fact she came to take part in the competition dressed in her dinner outfi t. Vincent, who has been regularly play-ing darts, was very excited when one of his darts landed on top of another. This is something very unusual. The star of the afternoon was another new player: Denis Hardie, who hails from the United Kingdom. Although he is a new Member, he is not new to the game, as he had played it before. Denis won many prizes during the afternoon, and his best achievement was in the bull’s-eye competition, where he won three prizes.

The Section will be heading northwards to Seremban and Kuala Lumpur in May, and whilst in Seremban we

will be playing a friendly game with the Royal Sungei Ujong Club; and in Kuala Lumpur we will be playing with the Royal Lake Club. Members who are keen to play can contact M. C. Cheong.

The Art of Massage WorkshopWednesday, 18 April, 11.15am to 12.45pm at Studio 2, Gymnasium

Massage is an ancient art and everyone can benefi t from this healing art. It acts to improve circulation and general well being.

The therapeutic effect of mas-sage is greatly enhanced by combining technique, and quality massage oil, with or without the use of heat or cold pads. Different massage move-ments, and pressure when applied to the body during a massage session stimulate the nerves and tone the muscles.

Massage is not only an en-joyable experience, but has become an important com-ponent in enhancing athletic performance.

• Swedish MassageThis massage works to soothe and calm the body and is a delightful experience.

• Signature MassageThis is a form of massage technique uniquely created for the spa, with specifi c ef-fects to the body.

• Balinese MassageTraditionally this massage technique is commonly used for the healing of aches and pain especially after a strenuous exercise.

“That pair of jeans really emphasises her fl at bottom” My wife made this remark the other day when a lady in skinny tight jeans walked passed us. She was right; that lady does not have any glutes development at all. Before you think I am: making a remark on her fashion sense, I am not; the importance of glutes development goes way beyond just looking good in jeans.

Your buttocks muscle (Gluteus) is one of the most pow-erful muscles in your body. It helps you to extend your hips (running and jumping); hip abduction (cutting from side to side); and hip external rotation (swinging and throwing): pretty much all of the athletic activities. Most, if not all athletes playing at a relatively high level will have well-developed glutes, because they rely on them to help generate a tremendous amount of power and force in their chosen sports.

Even if you are not the athletic type of person, it is still important to have glutes development for injury preventative reasons. Whenever the hips do not extend well, we end up substituting that with excessive lumbar spine extension, and subsequently we end up with lower back pain.

The following are some exercise progressions to get you started.

Cook Hip Lift

The cook hip lift is a great exercise to teach the differ-ence between movement from the lumbar spine and the glutes. • In a supine position, with both knees bent about slight-ly less than 90 degree and both feet fl at on the fl oor. • Pull one knee into the chest. From this position, press through the heel of the other foot and extend the hip while keeping the knee close to the chest. You may realise that you are not able to lift up very high initially. This is could be due to having weak glutes or tight hip fl exors. Keep working on it, and it will get bet-ter over time.

Rear Foot Elevated Split Squat

This exercise will stretch your hip fl exors and work your glutes hard!• Get into a split stance position, while positioning the rear foot on the bench.• From this position, keeping your body weight over the heel of the front foot, slowly lower yourself until your front thigh is parallel to the fl oor and your back knee is almost touching the fl oor.• Pause for a second and return to starting position.

TRX Lunge

This exercise is similar to the above exercise, but with an added element of increased instability: thus, increasing the demand of the hip musculature.• Place one foot in the foot cradle. Centre with an an-chor point, position shoulders over the hips.• Drive suspended knee back. Lower hip till front knee is at 90-degrees.• Drive through mid-foot and heel of front leg and ex-tend hips. There you have it! Give this a try and let us know.

Tour de Singapura’12A Spinning journey

Nothing could stop our Members from spinning their way through February. They climbed, sprinted and powered relentlessly through a series of challenging terrain profi les.

The “Tour de Spinning” held through the month of February brought out the very best from all our riders. Each class was carefully crafted to encourage participants to complete a particular distance and course, taking them through a new physical experience.

Members’ efforts were recorded

daily and our top 3 achievers, Ms Jay Madley, (580.30km) Ms Carolina Caballero (577km) and Ms Saadie Tariq (547km) led the ‘platoon’ to finish in style on Strength Ride, 29th February!

This program explored time, dis-tance and cadence by creating a balance between the resistance applied on the Spinner Bike, and the revolutions per minute, to better elicit a realistic riding ex-perience.

Congratulations to all our Tour de Singapura participants! We look forward to another exciting Spinning programme in the near future.

Fitness Tip of the MonthFat-loss exercise is about being as ineffi cient as you can be, noted strength and conditioning coach Dan John. Why is ineffi ciency a good thing for fat loss? Because being ineffi cient means you use up a lot more energy/calories than you need to.

Just like when most people shop for a car, they want to look for a car that is fuel efficient; a car that can get them the most mileage with the least petrol. In fat-loss training, however, you want the exact oppo-site, so that you burn the maximum amount of calo-ries in a given time.

This also explains part of the reason why a lot peo-ple stop seeing results after a while, because they have been using the same machine/movement over and over again. Their bodies have gotten so used to the movement that they are no longer burning as many calories as when they first started (remember

the first time when you were on the crosstrainer or did a spin class?)

The message to take home is to try something you nev-er tried before:

If you are always running on the treadmill, try Jump rope.

If you are always cycling, try rowing.

If you are always doing interval training on the treadmill, try doing it with a Kettlebell swing.

If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you’ve always gotten.

Suspension Trainer Circuit TrainingEvery Monday (9am to 10am) & Wednesday (10am to 11am) at Studio 2, Gymnasium

Suspension training is a bodyweight form of exer-cise using all three planes of movement: namely fron-tal, sagittal and transverse planes. Posture stability and movement control are the key to getting proper tech-niques and a great work-out. The carry-over of these

physical improvements can be felt greatest in your func-tional movements and one’s core stability and strength. Suspension training can be customised for beginner lev-els to advanced users doing more complex exercises.

Circuit training is a series of exercises done at a fairly constant pace, with minimal rest in-between sets. This results in increased aerobic requirement and also mus-cular endurance.

Combining the two to-gether, you will get an all-rounded exercise, sure to make both beginners and advanced gym goers break more than a sweat!

The Tanglin Club is proud to be hosting the National Pairs Championship which, at the time of writing, had reached the quarter final

stage. Several Tanglin Club pairs are competing in this prestigious tournament and we have high hopes of achieving higher than average success.

The Interclub Pairs League, which is played on the Tanglin Club green, is under way and will run for ten weeks. We hope to repeat our win of last year.

Entries for this year’s Club Singles and Drawn Pairs were of record proportions and both competitions are well under way. Several new young players have entered which has substantially lowered the average age of the participants.

Forthcoming Events

A comprehensive programme has been constructed which should stimulate all competitive bowlers for the rest of the year. Apart from the Open Pairs, there will be triples and pairs competitions played by sets, rather than ends, and we are hoping to introduce a handicap system to encourage those bowlers who may be lacking in experience to enjoy playing against competitors of all standards.

We will travel to Bangkok to fulfi ll our interport com-mitment later in the year, and another overseas tour to Hong Kong is also being planned and fi rm dates for both these will be announced soon.

Our friendly against the Singapore Cricket Club has been fi xed for Sunday 1 July, so please mark your diaries and indicate your interest with the Sports and Recrea-

tion Offi ce as soon as possible. This match will help us adjust to the SCC playing conditions in time for the Pot competition, which is to be played at the SCC rink dur-ing October.

Other events include the Henton Cup, the annual match against the Staff, the Novices Competition and the usual end-of-year carnival. In addition, we have several visits scheduled from overseas clubs to play The Tanglin Club bowlers. Later in the year, The Singapore Triples League will occur and we hope to retain our title won last year.

Happy bowling. See you on the Green soon.

Page 44: The Tanglin Club Magazine: April 2012

On the weekend of February 24th to 26th , 2012, the Tanglin Club once again showed the Asia-Pacifi c squash community that it is the premier

club for hosting an international event that combines the highest standard of squash competition, with the magnanimous conviviality that defi nes the Club’s squash section.

128 teams began play on Thursday and by Sunday af-ternoon, there was one team left standing, with Timothy Arnold and Aaron Chee once again holding the Presi-dent’s Cup trophy. This was the third championship in a row for the Malaysians and #1 seed in this year’s tour-nament.

In addition to teams from Malaysia, teams from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand made the trip up to see for themselves the legend of the Tanglin Club squash section’s very own beer garden. (Note: the Tanglin Club is the only club in the world known to have a beer garden connected to its squash facility.)

In addition to the teams from those countries, the tour-nament included participants from well over 20 coun-tries. This tournament can truly be considered the most international squash doubles tournament in the world (called “Jumbo Doubles” in Asia, simply called “Squash Doubles” in North America).

The caliber of play continues to expand with the in-ternational reach of this tournament. Top-class play was seen late into the evenings on Thursday, Friday and Sat-urday nights of the tournament. And there was as much activity in and around the beer garden as there was on the court. If the standard on the court was world class, it can be argued that so too was the performance of many of the participants off of the court. It seemed the beer garden was in full swing both morning and night for the

duration of the tournament! By Sunday morning, when the dust had settled on Sat-

urday night’s social activities, repeat winners Timothy Arnold and Aaron Chee prepared to face their fellow Ma-laysians, Ivan Yuen and Elvinn Keo in the Main Draw fi nals. In front of a large and boisterous crowd at midday – which became less boisterous and more impatient as the excellent play by both teams continued to escalate, thereby pushing out lunch further and further, which helped beer sales at the squash courts, but also allowed hunger to take its toll on the spectators – the teams found each other at 14-14 in the fi nal game. The entire cham-pionship came down to one point: 128 teams started the weekend, and here we were: two teams left, one point to go for the championship. Timothy Arnold allowed for only a quick rally before fi nding a forehand volley he could crush into the corner, to roll a nic and clinch the team’s third consecutive Presidents Cup’s trophy.

Page 45: The Tanglin Club Magazine: April 2012

With the match fi nally over, Timo-thy and Aaron were left holding the hardware, and although they had given everything they could to win 15-14 in the fi nal game, it was the gallery, and in particular, the squash section members of the Tanglin Club, that looked the worse for wear. The combination of three nights of heavy and robust ‘hosting’, fol-lowed by a long match with copious amounts of merriment fl owing, left the spectators dragging themselves across Stevens Road at 2:30pm on Sunday in search of lunch.

Following the awards ceremony – and some much-needed sustenance for all – the weekend came to a close (except for squash section member Satyen Desai , who when this article went to print, was seen marching off into the night with little desire to see the weekend’s activities come to a close). Again, this event was a wild success for the Tanglin Club

and the Asia-Pacifi c squash commu-nity. Thank you to all who made this weekend such a resounding success, and we will see you all next year!

The 14th annual Jumbo Doubles will be held at the Tanglin Club from January 24th to 27th, 2013.

The ACS Falcon Swim Team started this year’s Merlion Swim League by hosting the fi rst swim meet of the year at the UWC Dover campus. The Swim League is a series of swim meets jointly organised by The Tanglin

Club, the British Club, ACS Falcon Swim Team, the American Club and the Masden Swim Club.

Our Tanglin Club team, the Tanglin Torpedoes have a great race. Many swimmers fi nish with podium position, and have clocked many personal best times. The Sunday’s swim meet was the fi rst for some of our young swimmers.

Our best swimmer at the meet was six year-old Ema Yap, and this was her fi rst swim meet. She came in fi rst in both the 50m Freestyle and 50m Breast-stroke events. Well done, team!

The next meet will be on 21 April, and this time, the Tanglin Torpedoes will be hosting the swim meet.
