TELFER SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT The Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa is uniquely positioned to link with and learn from Canada’s leaders.

With some 3,800 students, 200 full and part-time faculty and 25, 000 alumni, the Telfer School of Management is a diverse and vibrant environment which students, faculty, researchers, and alumni can forge rewarding lifelong relationships.

The Telfer School is located in the Desmarais Building – an impressive 12-storey structure that features a variety of cutting edge facilities. Our distinct programs include: Bachelor of Commerce, MBA, Executive MBA, Master of Health Administration and two Msc programs. The Telfer School of Management is accredited by AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS, ranking us among the best business schools in the world.

The Telfer School’s Centre for Executive Leadership, located in Ottawa’s World Exchange Plaza, serves as the premier location for the Telfer Executive MBA Program and Executive Programs. The Centre for Executive Leadership is dedicated to high performance leadership programs and is designed to promote an optimal learning environment.

Located in the heart of Canada’s capital and offering a broad range of outstanding research and teaching programs in both of Canada’s official languages, the University of Ottawa is Canada’s University.

At the Telfer Executive MBA Program, we believe that true acceleration of growth and transformation happens in an environment where interactions are in-person and multi-dimensional − where it is “live”. Our ‘live’ program is deliberately designed for mid-career and senior executive who seek a Global, Practical and Relevant experience while earning a graduate degree.

Our comprehensive, global and real-world curriculum focuses on leadership, teamwork and cross-cultural collaboration. The curriculum is tightly connected through our Signature Series of Six Business Consulting Projects, two of which are global in focus and involve two international business trips. These projects are true accelerators of learning because you will move beyond the classroom and actively engage in work with client organizations to answer their business challenges in real-time. You will be directly applying what you are learning in class by bringing it into the field.

Actively Manage your Career The Telfer Executive MBA Program does not disrupt the momentum of your career. Scheduled class days take place on alternate Fridays and Saturdays in order to minimize your time away from work. This allows for you to continue working full-time while earning your MBA degree. You can learn the strategic integration of business disciplines and leadership models in the classroom today and actively apply them to your job tomorrow.

Our alumni consistently agree that the Telfer Executive MBA Program equipped them with a strong set of business tools and filters, and effectively raised their competency platforms including their self-confidence and their capability to address business challenges and opportunities in a timely manner.

The Program attracts candidates who are ambitious and who have clear objectives for their future as well as a commitment to both their career and personal success. These candidates are looking to further develop their lifework, to grow their network of contacts, and to strengthen their business competencies. Candidates recognize the value of the practical component of the Telfer Executive MBA Program, emphasizing the application of knowledge in real management settings specifically found through the Signature Series of Six Business Consulting Projects.

The Strategic Marketing Consulting Project – Your team will work with a not-for-profit organization within Ottawa with the goal of contributing back to the community, while understanding the marketing challenges facing a not-for-profit organization.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship Consulting Project in Silicon Valley – You will travel to California’s Silicon Valley to complete a team-based consulting assignment on behalf of a Silicon Valley-based start-up company. In addition, you will also visit the world’s leading technology companies, attend private executive briefings with senior Silicon Valley leaders and see first-hand previews of the future of technology and innovation.

The Individual Business Consulting Project – You will personally select the client organization and work with your client to identify the business challenge for the focus of the project. During the summer months you will engage with your client to undertake research and analysis on the topic. At the end of August, you will formally recommend a course of action for them to consider in addressing their business challenge.

The Technology Entrepreneurship Business Consulting Project – Your team will work with local entrepreneurs to present a business plan and investor package to a panel of professional investors who will decide on the fundability of the project. On average, teams secure a second meeting for every one in three presentations – well above the industry average of one in one hundred.

The Business Strategy Project –Your team will conduct a strategic analysis of an organization to identify a potential client organization which is considering doing business in the market selected for the International Consulting Project and Trip. The key element of the Business Strategy Project is to critically assess the fit between the organization, its strategy and the destination selected.

The International Consulting Project & Trip – Your team will work with the client organization to gather intelligence on business opportunities within a selected global market. During the one week business trip to the destination, you will finalize your recommendations by validating market potential, exploring the ecosystem of the business, holding stakeholder interviews, solidifying contacts, and experiencing first-hand the local protocols of business.

Why the Telfer Executive MBA

One of the core components of the Telfer Executive MBA Program is the integration of six business consulting projects within the curriculum. Each project requires you to work as a business consultant with client organizations addressing real business challenges and opportunities in short timelines.

The Telfer Executive MBA places a strong emphasis on teamwork and learning to work within a group environment. Five of six business consulting projects involve working within a team environment. The teamwork component of the program focuses on the reality of the global economy where you are often placed in structured teams. This opportunity allows you to learn how to leverage strengths of others, to understand team dynamics and to appreciate a process for sharing leadership and responsibility with an aim to achieve the deliverables of the Telfer Executive MBA Program.

The Telfer Executive MBA Program extends well beyond visiting organizations within a chosen destination. The Program places a practical consulting focus on your global experience: to create relationships and to identify opportunities and value within the market for a client organization, to gain relevant global business experiences to your career growth, and to provide you with the analytical frameworks relevant to your own organization’s global strategy. Telfer Executive MBA candidates complete two international consulting projects as a part of the curriculum’s Signature Series of Six Business Consulting Projects.

The Global Experience

Identify Potential Global Markets Candidates will be exposed to the broad range of factors that an organization needs to consider when deciding to undertake entry into a new international market. Your class will use a structured process to select the international destination with market potential for Canadian companies for your International Consulting Project and Trip.

Evaluate the Business Strategy as it relates to Globalization The Business Strategy Consulting Project will enable you to identify and analyze the potential fit between the selected international destination and to the client’s business strategy. Based on this analysis and research, your team will identify if the organization will be your client for the International Consulting Project within the chosen destination.

Understand the Global Business Environment You will gain an appreciation of the strategic, legal, operational and organizational issues facing management when engaging in international business. The Multi-National Corporations and Strategies course facilitates the preparation of background research and analysis required for the international consulting trip.

Experience On-The-Ground Client Consulting You will examine the challenges of management within the global economy by conducting a major business consulting project within the selected international destination. Candidates typically develop market entry strategies, channel development strategies or strategic alliances for the organizations they represent abroad.

Connect with Innovative Environments, Organizations & People Candidates gain a full understanding of the importance of Silicon Valley within the global economy. Candidates appreciate the ‘uniqueness’ of Silicon Valley through direct discussions and networking events with executives and entrepreneurs. You will understand why Silicon Valley is attractive to entrepreneurs as well as why Silicon Valley is best positioned to produce ‘game changing’ technology and applications.

Preview Emerging Technologies and Management Practices You will preview new technological advancements and breakthroughs from leading research centres. The rich discussions on active research projects will open your mind to the astonishing future of technology. You will uncover insights into Silicon Valleys’ distinct management practices and a unique culture that promotes learning and new ideas along with fostering broad-based collaboration.

Experience the Silicon Valley Business Culture You will be asked to address a real business challenge facing your client organization in Silicon Valley. Through your respective business consulting project, you will come to appreciate the innovative and entrepreneurial ecosystem that many of the largest technology companies in the world belong to and you will come to understand the challenges and opportunities of doing business in a highly innovative environment.

The Telfer Executive MBA program offers the hands-on experience of working in international markets. The two international trips gave us a chance to apply our knowledge in a real-life global environment.
