January  2018

Dear  Community  minded  partner,

I  am  very  pleased  to  announce  another  large  jump  in  assets  this  year.    The  Temiskaming  Foundation  is  boasting  a  total  of  $7,265,063  in  assets  and  very  proud  of  the  $390,555  donated  back  to  the  community  in  2017.

Our  most  important  news  is  our  6  new  funds  established  and  the  move  of  our  office  to  our  downtown  street  level  location  at  61  Whitewood  Ave,  New  Liskeard.    As  you  read  on  in  this  report,  you  will  see  the  details  of  many  generous  donors  and  how  the  community  has  been  enhanced  by  this.

2017  has  been  an  exciting  year  as  Canada  has  celebrated  our  150th  Birthday.    The  Temiskaming  Foundation  has  granted  to  many  celebrations  and  events  in  and  around  our  community  to  enhance  our  culture  and  heritage,  celebrating  our  Canada  150.

Your  donation,  big  or  small  makes  a  positive  impact  within  our  community.

As  I  am  finishing  my  term  as  President,  I  would  like  to  thank  Claire,  the  Board  of  Directors  and  Peter  for  this  opportunity.    I  have  learned  so  much  and  will  continue  to  do  my  best  to  contribute  to  our  Community  that  I  am  proud  to  be  a  part  of.

I  would  like  to  thank  our  dedicated  Board  of  Directors  and  Advisors  for  their  commitment  and  dedication  to  making  the  TTF  what  it  is  today,  and  especially  Claire,  our  Executive  Director  for  continuously  going  beyond  the  call  of  duty  to  make  sure  the  vision  of  the  Foundation  never  looses  momentum.

Thank  you,

Michele  Lamoureux  President  The  Temiskaming  Foundation

N E W F U N DS of 2017

Alexa Corneil Fund

This fund was established in memory of Alexa

who passed away in 2017. She is remembered

as a talented athlete, a dependable friend, a

quiet leader and a very mature, caring and

funny young woman. This donor directed fund

celebrates her life and has already made a

grant to install an AED at the Junction Creek

Climbing facility in London Ontario.

Eileen Ramsay Fund

Established by Peter and in memoriam

donations, this fund honours Eileen’s

dedication to her community. She made

our community stronger through her

teaching, her business activity and her

volunteering. She served 4 years on New

Liskeard Town council, and enjoyed being

on the boards of Temiskaming Art Gallery,

South Temiskaming Community Futures

Development Corp. and the New Liskeard

Library Board.

Jordan Birnie Memorial Fund

In July 2017, Jordan Birnie died

after a courageous lifelong battle

with mental illness. This fund will

build Jordan’s legacy and support

causes that honour his life.

Proceeds will be used to support a

scholarship in Jordan’s name and

promote mental health awareness

initiatives in Northern Ontario.

Linda Cote Memorial Fund

This fund was established in honour of Linda

by the South Temiskaming Futures

Development Corporation. Linda was a long

serving member on both the Board of Directors and the Advisory Board for The

Temiskaming Foundation. The income from

this fund will be split between the Paul Penna

(Cobalt) Library and the Historic Cobalt

Corporation.

Vivian Hylands Hostetler -Community

Fund In honour of Vivian, this fund was established by

her family as a named fund under the

Community Fund. It is hoped that this fund will

grow to become a restricted fund with the

proceeds to be used to further her historical and

literacy interests in Cobalt

Create your own Fund

1. Consider your charitable interests: What are you

passionate about? With a Donor Directed Fund at

The Temiskaming Foundation, you will have the

flexibility to support the causes you care about.

2. Establish your fund: With a donation of $10,000 you

can start a named fund. The capital is endowed

and the income is granted out annually.

3. Grant from your fund: As the fund holder of a Donor Directed Fund you can be involved in the granting process.

Why  do  people  set  up  funds  the  way  they  do?

Here  is  the  answer  for  one  donor:

The  Robert  and  Margaret  Pollock  (Swastika)  Memorial  Fund  This  fund  was  established  by  John  A.  Pollock  in  memory  of  his  parents.    John’s  mother,  Sarah  Margaret  Fawcett  Pollock  was  an  honours  graduate  from  Queen’s  University  in  1923.    Ten  of  Mrs.  Pollock’s  grandchildren  and  several  great  grand  children  have  graduated  from  Queen’s  University.    Mrs.  Pollock  went  on  to  teach  and  in  1923,  she  became  the  first  principal  of  Swastika  Public  School.

John’s  father  Robert  was  one  of  the  pioneers  of  Swastika.    He  prospected  and  worked  around  the  area  from  1910-‐1919.    From  1919-‐1935  he  was  the  Road  Inspector  for  the  Department  of  Northern  Development.    He  served  as  a  member  of  Teck  Township  (Kirkland  Lake  and  Swastika)  council  from  1921-‐1928.    It  was  during  this  time  that  Swastika  was  supplied  with  electricity  and  waterworks.

This  history  set  the  path  for  John.    When  he  established  the  fund,  he  decided  to  divide  the  income  allocation  into  two  scholarships.    The  first,  a  four-‐year  bursary,  to  a  graduate  of  Kirkland  Lake  Collegiate  Vocational  Institute  who  is  studying  Engineering  at  Queen’s  University.      The  other  one  to  a  grade  8  student  from  Swastika  who  writes  the  best  essay  on  “Why  I  am  proud  to  be  Canadian”.

In  2017,  Jakob  Rosko-‐Fong  received  $750,  his  third  year  of  the  four-‐year  award.

Since  the  establishment  of  this  fund  in  1996,  26  students  have  received  awards  from  this  fund.

In  years  that  there  is  no  new  scholarship  recipient,  a  grant  is  forwarded  to  the  Museum  of  Northern  History  in  Kirkland  Lake  –  in  2017,  this  was  a  $750  grant.

This  award  was  established  to  commemorate  the  lives  of  Robert  &  Margaret  Pollock,  two  pioneers  of  Swastika  who  contributed  to  the  growth  of  the  village  of  Swastika  and  the  Township  of  Teck.

TEMISKAMING

In 2017 The Temiskaming Foundation partnered with charities and professionals in the community to participate in a LEAVE A LEGACY ™ project. A series of one page information articles were published in the Temiskaming Speaker during the month of May. Each week highlighted a local example of people making a difference in the lives that follow. LEAVE A LEGACY™ is a national initiative of the Canadian Association of Gift Planners to promote interest in and create public awareness of charitable giving through a will or an estate plan. Its national mission is to encourage all Canadians to have a Will and to consider the personal and financial benefits of making a charitable bequest to the charities of their choice. Our goal is to encourage everyone to "Make a Difference in the Lives that Follow." For more information on this project contact LEAVE A LEGACY™ at 1-800-430-9494 or check out the LEAVE A LEGACY ™ TEMISKAMING website at
