Good Friday Wasn’t Always Good: A Jewish Perspective

(This article first appeared in the Tennessean on April 4, 2012. I share it with you here because it highlights and celebrates one of the strengths and successes of our congregation.) Good Friday was not always so good for the Jews. In less inclusive times, and in less welcoming circumstances, that day was often a day when virulent anti-semitic acts were sanctioned, and even encouraged, by those who continued to perpetuate horrific myths and stereotypes against the Jewish People.

Given this reality, over the centuries, those who wished to convert to Judaism were often met with a rather sobering question: Do you pledge your loyalty to Judaism, and to the Jewish people, amid all circumstances, and conditions? Without exception, this is the most important question we ask, of every single candidate for conversion, on the evening of their conversion ceremony. It requires an absolutely unwavering determination, and a publicly proclaimed willingness, to stand at the ready in defense of our faith, our people, and our ancestral homeland. What does it take to become a Jew? And why on earth would someone choose that path for themselves...I mean, would you, if you were born to some faith, other than the Jewish faith? This year, here at the Temple, we had nearly one hundred people show up, once again, for a class we call “A Taste of Judaism”. Some come simply to learn more about the Jewish faith, or about the Jewish roots of their own faith. But many come as the first step along the path towards conversion. Over the past year, in that same vein, we’ve had nearly two dozen students continue on that journey, gathering on Sunday mornings to study together, and to share in their collective quest...and questioning, of their desire and readiness to join our people and our faith. When they are ready, we welcome them, through rituals both ancient and modern, into the Jewish faith. In recent weeks, during virtually every Friday night Sabbath worship service, we’ve welcomed (and will continue to welcome) many of these students, into our congregational home and into our communal heart. And so, once again, because of the required commitments to the connections which bind them to our Jewish past and future, to our heritage and our destiny, we actually ask those who come to join our Jewish family, and faith, this very question, right on our pulpit: “ Do you pledge your loyalty to the Jewish faith, despite all circumstances and conditions?” And sometimes, we add these words to their conversion ceremonies as well: “Knowing well the history of martyrdom in years past, this Jew-by-choice has chosen (nonetheless) to join their destiny with ours. And we are prepared to open our hearts to them.” It is a powerful moment, for them, and for us. While we don’t wish to denigrate our own heritage, we are somewhat in awe of their pursuit: we are well acquainted, perhaps too well acquainted, not only with the rewards of being a Jew, but we are also quite familiar with the risks that come along with it. These wonderful souls have chosen Judaism, nonetheless; they have chosen this sacred place as their Jewish home; and they have chosen this sacred assembly of souls as their Jewish family and their Jewish community. They have enriched our lives in countless ways, and we are fortunate to have them accept our embrace even as we fully accept theirs. They are -- each and every one of them-- true blessings that magnify and sanctify our congregational and communal life. On the Friday before Easter, this year, as Jews gathered together to celebrate the first night of Passover, we recalled both the pride and the pain of our heritage. We retold the story that transformed a mere band of slaves into a sacred nation; we remembered the narrative that fashioned a homeless people into a holy people. For many Jews-by-choice, this was their first Passover; for many of them, it was the first time that our story, became theirs...and their stories became part of ours. In that way, it may yet be a good Friday for us, after all.

Get on Board It’s a wonderful time to begin one’s tenure as president of The Temple. Our finances remain strong, members - particularly those under the age of 35 - are joining in record numbers, program offerings continue to increase, and congregant participation is at an all time high. By any measure, we are in a very good place. I am honored to become your president, and I will work hard to continue the tradition of excellence that has defined our congregation. For those who don’t know me, you will learn that I am not a “rear view mirror” kind of guy. I think that it is important to remember the past and to learn from it, but not be burdened by it. I am more of an

optimist than a pessimist and, when problems do arise, I think that we must do our best to turn them into opportunities. This will be my approach as your president. Like my predecessors, I will be proactive. It is important that we anticipate problems before they occur, and craft appropriate solutions. I don’t intend to propose changes strictly for the sake of change; however, as our lay leaders have always done, I will continue to strive for improvement. When important matters arise, you can be assured that I will consult with others before making a recommendation or taking action. We have outstanding clergy, a terrific group of officers, competent and experienced staff, and a wealth of wisdom in our past presidents and members of the Board, and I intend to utilize all of their talents when necessary. I am going to try to do some different things with my articles in the View. In addition to keeping you abreast of Board actions and activities at The Temple, I plan to take a closer look at various issues affecting us all, as well as some things that are important to me. You will learn more about our Temple in the process and, hopefully, it will be interesting for all of us. In the coming months, you will be hearing more about some of my plans, the work of some of our committees, and important issues that will be addressed. Security and our lay leadership structure are high on the list of items to be examined, but there is much more. I understand and appreciate that The Temple cannot do everything for everyone, but what we can do, we need to do well. We must, within reason, be responsive to our members’ needs. In those situations where we cannot accommodate a request, we must articulate our positions clearly. Above all, we must be fair and consistent in our positions. I am fortunate to be working with a great group of officers. Ralph Levy, Martin Sir and Joyce Friedman are all extremely talented and dedicated individuals who bring much to the table. I encourage you to share with us your ideas and suggestions regarding the Temple. We are always looking for fresh perspectives.

Most of us, as we travel through our lives, are cognizant of the fact that our lives have been blessed and enhanced by those whom we have loved (and lost), or by those who loved us, and whom we remember as well as a blessing in our lives. These memories may hit us on any particular day, despite the passage of the years. Sometimes they remain with us each and every day of our lives, as we struggle to continue on, despite the pain of our loss, or our longing.

We are often referred to as the People of the Book. While we do well to focus on more spontaneous thoughts, reflections and memories of those we loved and cherished, and still do, we also do great honor to our loved ones, to their memories, and in a sense, to ourselves, when we choose to memorialize them in a more formal fashion. We honor our loved ones when we commit their names to paper, and when we share their memorial with the rest of our sacred community.

I encourage you to consider these thoughts, and to consider, as well, the placing of names of your loved ones, who live on in memory, within the pages of our Memorial Book, which we prepare every year for the Day of Atonement. Though the High Holy Day season is still months away, you will soon be receiving an invitation to include their names within the pages of this sacred Book of Memory.

Without question, our loved ones continue to live on in our hearts. But there is something quite powerful about seeing the names of our loved ones in print, on the Day of Atonement, the most sacred of days on the Jewish calendar. To view those names, and the goodness they inspired during their lifetimes, and the goodness they still inspire in us, is no small thing. To share these names with the rest of the congregation, magnifies the meaning of their lives and the centrality of their lives within us. May the memories of our dear ones continue to inspire us to act with goodness, with kindness and with blessing.

His grandparents are Alan and Janice Bussey of Murray, Kentucky, Nikki and David Friedman of Highland Park, Illinois & Phil and Gladys Klinsky of Sarasota, Florida. He is donating books to the Temple Library in memory of Baruch Fum as his mitzvah project. Baruch was a young boy who died during the holocaust and was unable to become a Bar Mitzvah. Spencer is in the seventh grade at Brentwood Middle School. His special interests include swimming, soccer, and hanging out with his friends and brother.

Shayna Juliette Elliot was born on March 22, 1999 in Nashville, Tennessee. Her parents are Loren and Jon Elliot Her grandparents are Sharon and Alan Lipworth & Greta and Michael Elliot all of Scarsdale, New York. She selected as her mitzvah project, Afrika Tikkun, an international organization that provides education, health and social services to children, youth and their families through centers of excellence in South African Townships. Shayna is in the seventh grade at University School of Nashville. Her special interests include basketball, volleyball, tennis, art and architecture, and spending time with family and friends.

Jay Louis Karp was born on February 2, 1999 in Boston, Massachutes. His parents are Lauren and Seth Karp. His grandparents are Alan and Joyce Karp of Melville, New York & Stanley and Evelyn Harris of Richboro, Pennsylvania. He is focusing on raising awareness and funds in addition to giving bar mitzvah donations for Empower African Children as his mitzvah project. Jay would like to fund a student’s tuition, medical expenses, food and clothing for one year. Jay is in the seventh grade at Harding Academy. His special interests are saxophone, drums, karate (brown belt), Cam Encore Coda (Maine), skiing, snowboarding and golf.

Laurel Rottman-Yang was born on June 3, 1999 in Yue Yang, China. Her parents are Jeff Rottman and Elizabeth Yang. Her grandparents are Ruth and T.T. Yang of Columbia, Maryland & Melvin Rottman of Baltimore, Maryland. Laurel is gathering donations for the Shanghai Children’s Home as the focus of her mitzvah project. She is in seventh grade at MLK Magnet School. Her special interests include ice skating, clarinet, singing in the Nashville Children’s Touring Choir, and Chinese language and dance performance.

For his mitzvah project, Ryan worked as a volunteer at and is collecting donations for Saddle Up!, a therapeutic riding stable for children with special needs. Ryan is in the 7th grade at Currey Ingram Academy. His special interests include archery, video games, tennis and hanging out with friends.

Keri Lin Friedman was born on May 10, 1999. Her parents are Ray Friedman & Jen-Jen Lin. Her grandparents are Chiang Hui-Chin Lin of Taipei, Taiwan & the late Chin-yao Lin and the late Sam & Brena Friedman. For her mitzvah project, Keri is volunteering at Saint Bernard Academy’s aftercare program and gathering supplies for Noah’s Ark Society, a group that is a shelter for lost animals. She is in the 7th grade at Saint Bernard Academy and her special interests include guitar, soccer, performing Chinese Lion Dance, reading and talking with friends.

Rabbi Schiftan’s Sabbatical Update:At long last, Rabbi Schiftan will be taking the first part of a delayed three-part sabbatical,

approved by the Board of Trustees several years ago.

He will include this initial phase alongside his summer vacation plans for this year. Rabbi Schiftan will be gone from early June until early August, with the final dates

to be determined in the very near future.

Please note that during his absence, Rabbi Mackler and Cantor Gutcheon will be available for any pastoral and life cycle needs of the congregation.


We are delighted that, once again, we will be joining with the West End Synagogue and Congregation Sherith Israel in the celebration of the Festival of Shavuot. Shavuot celebrates the giving of the Torah at Mt. Sinai.

On Saturday evening, May 26, we will gather at the West End Synagogue for a brief Shavuot service, followed by an evening of Jewish learning. We will provide the congregation with more details as the day approaches.

This year has gone by so quickly. As we head into the summer when we can relax, re-group and look ahead, I hope we can all look back a bit as well. We have seen so much community learning and growing. We have shared our ideas, thoughts and feelings. We have come together in so many ways to better understand and know each other. Our 2nd Year of the Temple Community theme has allowed us to continue to establish ties and connections between our students and our larger congregational

community. In some cases, the groups and connections will continue into the future. I will look forward to those meetings and gatherings. I am grateful to our devoted staff. Their tireless efforts, week after week, have provided our students with many wonderful learning opportunities. I am grateful to

our committed Education Committee for their guidance, great ideas and constant help. I am grateful to our supportive parents who take Jewish education seriously and set a wonderful example to their children through their commitment to Jewish learning. I am grateful to our precious students who arrive each week with big smiles and happy, beautiful faces ready and eager to learn. As I begin to plan for another year, The Year of Honoring Our Fathers and Mothers, may these upcoming

summer months bring you all relaxation and quietness. We will again be sending registration information via email in an attempt to make the process easier and less cumbersome. Let’s keep in touch and certainly if there is anything I can do for you as we approach our upcoming school year, I hope you won’t hesitate to contact me.

Intergenerational Delight A recent feature story on ABC’s Good Morning America highlighted “One Generation,” an unusual Van Nuys, California Daycare Center for preschoolers and their senior “neighbors next door,” as the children call them. In this unique setting, the children’s and the seniors’ programs are in adjoining rooms and the two groups are given the opportunity to interact with one another up to seven times a day. Supervised by trained professionals, they share many fun-filled activities—including singing, dancing, art, and reading. This trend has definitely caught on. Today, there are more than five hundred similar programs nationwide. According to new studies, preschoolers who had regular contact with seniors were eleven months ahead of children from standard day cares in their ability to name emotions, work cooperatively, and participate in social activities. They also had better manners. Programs that provided time for seniors and preschoolers together gave young students the opportunity to learn from their elders, who had already experienced the full gamut of life experiences. The “One Generation” adults that were interviewed on Good Morning America felt that they were not only receiving care, but that they were also giving

back. With these sentiments in mind, the Temple Preschool scheduled one of several get-togethers with the Tuesday Golden Lunch Bunch. We hoped that our children would experience the same benefits as other intergenerational groups from The Temple and the Playschool had experienced in the past. On Tuesday, April 3rd, both of our three year old classes and their teachers, Laura Queyrouze, Alyson Thomas, Edith Valenzuela, and Moon Bishop, and Melissa Sostrin, our Judaica teacher, ascended the spiraling staircase to visit the Golden Lunch Bunch that meets every 1st and 3rd Tuesday at The Temple. They sang “The Afikoman Mambo” and “Banu Choshech.” They also made cards for the adults who attended that day’s luncheon. The Preschool has the 3rd week in June scheduled for our older classrooms to visit the Golden Lunch Bunch, and we hope to visit several times during the coming year. May approaches quickly, and we will once again honor the 2012 graduates from The Temple Preschool on the 23rd of May at 7:00p.m. Nineteen students will entertain us with their talents, and we will be there to provide Kleenex and good wishes to those wonderful students, teachers and families that have been such a part of our lives for the past five years. Congratulations to all of you.

Social Action AllocationsFor the current year, Social Action Allocations in the amount of $15,000 were distributed to twelve agencies (including the Temple Room-in-the-Inn Program which received $3500.00 of this amount). Beginning in July, the Social Action Allocations Subcommittee will be sending

out requests for proposals for 2013 allocations to agencies presently funded, as well as to agencies recommended by congregants. Any agency submitted must have a non-profit designation by the federal government and may NOT be receiving funding from the Boulevard Bolt, the Religious School or any other Temple funding sources. Please email information about agencies (including the agency name, the

contact person at the agency, an email address for the agency and a telephone number for the agency) to Freya Sachs ([email protected]). This information must be sent to her no later than Monday, July 2, 2012.
